lost root
i lost root
I lost root too. TowelRoot's root no longer works. CWM's ROM Manager app won't "Reboot into Recovery", and CWM Recovery flashed with Odin didn't work, but instead Android bootloader appeared. No simple way to recover my Nandroid backup from just before update.

Hi - I installed an OTA update that forced me to restart during the initial setup. Once I rebooted, a prompt for a second update came up. Since then, I've already rooted my device without downloading the second OTA. Will I lose root or TWRP if I download the OTA?
I didn't. It just booted to TWRP and then I rebooted into system and still had root.
I'm at a loss as to what is wrong. I flashed a prerooted stock version of KitKat and I think root was working. But now for some reason it doesn't work. I flashed the supersu zip (v1.80) via TWRP recovery but after rebooting, the SuperSU app doesn't even show up on my device. When I install manually from thr Play Store it's as if I'm not rooted. I've flashed the zip multiple times and I do not want to factory reset and delete all my data (especially since I really can't backup without root atm). Any ideas?
Edit: sorry about the post title typo. *flashing
My sister has a Sprint GS3, SPH-L710 and recently installed the 4.4.2 OTA (L710VPUDND8) not realizing that her apps will no longer be allowed to write/backup to her External SD card after the OTA (thanks google ). Anyway, I told her I could probably fix that problem by rooting it and making a few tweaks to restore the ability to write to the external SD card. Does rooting this phone require unlocking the bootloader (can you even unlock the bootloader anymore?) or can I get root without unlocking the bootloader? If so, what is the best/simplest method to use? She doesn't plan to be installing any custom ROMs, won't need a custom recovery and I'd like to root it without wiping her phone if possible. Thanks
This phone doesn't have a locked bootloader, to root just odin the tar for Philz recovery, boot directly into the recovery (uncheck auto reboot in odin, pull battery then boot to recovery) then flash the su.zip in recovery... Then boot the phone and you're rooted... Easy as pie

Thank you. Sry for my ignorance, obviously I'm not very familiar with the GS3. Can you direct me to step by step instructions? And will I be able to root her phone without wiping it? I want to keep this a simple as possible and not have to mess with restoring everything on her phone.
I found this on another thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52610162&postcount=2. Will this procedure work?
Thanks again
It's worked for some people.
Sent from my Sprint Samsung Galaxy SIII with M.O.A.R. v9.0, dkp kernel dated 3/20/2014 and TWRP v2.7.0.0.
I can verify that the method in post #3 above did work. However, after reboot, SuperSU sent a message that it had stopped working. I checked and it was installed. I went and updated SuperSU to the latest version (v1.94) via the market. I then went to SuperSU settings and installed it into the system. I now had root access and SuperSU was running properly. I then installed NextApp SDFix from the market and enabled writing to the external sd card. All is good now, her phone has root access and her apps can now write to the external SD Card. Thanks to all for your help.
I want to unroot the phone in order to update (as I haven't for a very long time), already flashed the stock recovery back but when opening SuperSu and using the full unroot option (which seems to work) till rebooted and SuperSu returns as does root access preventing me from doing the updates. I have unchecked superuser in the settings then full unroot etc, even tried deleting busybox / su from bin and xbin then superuser.apk via guides and still root returns the moment it's restarted. Any ideas how to get rid?
In most cases for this device, you can NOT unroot in order to OTA update. You need a stock never rooted ROM. Either restore the stock ROM (TWRP backup) you made before you rooted (and you should always make a TWRP backup before root, custom ROM, etc.); or otherwise restore a stock TWRP backup from the collection, following the instructions here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/tutorial-how-to-stock-stock-twrp-t3086860
Most guides here are about rooting with SuperSU. Last month I decided to go with Magisk instead, since development of SuperSU came to an end. I did a complete wipe, installed Stock (8.1.0, patch level June 2018) and Magisk, then restored my Apps with Titanium Backup. Happy ever after.
Now the July update is available and the tablet offers an OTA.
With SuperSU all OTAs ended in bricks, loops, whatever.
I'm curious what the prerequisites are for a successful OTA. Do I need to uninstall Magisk?
None.
Boot into TWRP
Sideload the OTA
Reboot to finalize update
Rebootinto TWRP
Install Magisk.zip to restore root
reboot
