My previous phone was the galaxy s4 sgh-i337. Thanks to you guy's I was able to root, and install ss. I was under the impression that all ATT phones where boot locked, but I have seen some htc m8 say unlocked.
I am confused. I recently changed over to T-Mobile, due to data overages, and locked boot.
My question is can I buy any of the variants and be safe? or should I stick with a T-Mobile branded version.
All versions of the M8 are bootloader locked (with exception of Developer's Edition), but can be easily unlocked via official means through HTC's website HTCDev.com. Once bootloader unlocked you can flash custom recovery, root, flash custom ROMs, and lots of other things. Not nearly as locked down as recent Samsung devices on AT&T.
If you are on T-Mobile, you should probably get the T-Mobile branded version if you want a phone that is compatible with T-Mobile's bands, out of the box.
You can flash the T-Mob radio to an AT&t version, but S-off is required ($25 via sunshine). Not worth having to mod the phone to get it fully running on T-Mob, if you can just buy the T-Mob version. There really isn't any benefit to getting the AT&T variant.

N6 is a very nice looking phone, and Nexus OS updates is certainly a nice perk. And some reviews compare the front-facing speakers on the N6 as being comparable ("almost" as good) to the impressive BoomSound speakers on the M8.
On the other hand, the N6 is really big, so you might want to make sure you are okay with that before buying. And while still very nice, the N6's back is plastic, so you may want to compare it in hand to the gorgeous metal M8.
The camera on the N6 is described as "average"; although the M8's camera is pretty divisive, as well.
All in all, I don't think you can go wrong either way. Both are excellent phones. Aside from sheer size difference, it comes down to some pretty subtle, and rather preferential differences.

Once again thank you. I will check them out in person. I may still go for the m8. Don't know if I really want to drop 6-700 on a phone.

Yes. The audio libs and ADSP are different than stock BoomSound. If you get S-Off you can convert to H/K and back to BoomSound again, so if you have nice headphones already, the standard model should do. But the H/K headphones are a pretty good deal for the small markup in price.

If you are rooting, then yes you can flash the H/K mod. You will need to be S-Off to do it, and that costs $25 from Sunshine (it's the only way now). It's totally worth it though to pay for. Besides getting the H/K sound, you will always be able to stay on top of the latest firmware. Otherwise to update it you have to flash a stock backup, a stock recovery, take the OTA (when it comes available), then go through the rooting process again. With S-Off, you just flash a firmware.zip and you are done.

I don't recommend getting a Sprint phone if you have T-mobile
So $25 from Sunshine is the only way to fully unlock an HTC now? It seems the more I find out about root, custom roms, and anything else we want to do with our phones is becoming more and more ridiculous to do.
I got off ATT because I was tired of knox, and have been researching that them and Verizon were the ones you didn't want because of the encrypted bootloaders. I got T-Mobile because from what I read they do not encrypt their bootloaders.
I was real excited to be able to customize my phone however I wanted. Im still new to all of this. The only phone I have ever modded was the sgh-i337.
Am I going to have spend 25 bucks every time I want to customize or reload something?

You can root and unlock without s-off. You're just slightly limited to android version, for example. Once htc update to lollipop that particular problem will end. The cost is unfortunate but justified.

Samsung is the one with "locked bootloaders" All the recent HTC Phones have bootloader unlock Via HTCDEV.com you just have to create an account and go through a few steps to unlock. Unlocked Sim is totally different and has nothing to do with htc. All the carriers have some forum of Sim lock so their no advantage of one over the other. Whats important to note is the 2 different Radio technologies used by the different carriers. GSM = T-mobile / AT&T / International / Developer Edition / Rogers / Vodaphone and/or CDMA = Verizon / Sprint / Boost / Virgin Mobile
The Sim Unlocked GSM One is the most desirable. And if Wifi calling is important to you only the T-mobile model will support it out of the box.
As For the S-Off that all depends on how you use the phone. I don't recommend everyone get s-off. But at some point if you need to return the phone to Stock for warranty proposes S-Off will be necessary.
S-Off is only done to a Device One time, their is no need to ever turn it back to s-on
S-Off allows you to change your CID / MID and firmware that you can't normally use / Do
This allows you to say convert your AT&T phone into a GPe or a Developer Edition and receive OTA updates the same as they do. I hope this clears some things up for you.

Yes, you can still use Sunshine to unlock and s-off if that's what you choose. but not needed to just flash roms

You will also be able to flash the newest versions of firmware way before your carrier updates, and therefore run the newest versions of ROMs without worrying a out not getting wifi and connection issues.

another question. I was looking at the E8, and noticed they are very similar except the E8 has a way better camera. Would I be able to use it, or am I barking up the wrong tree?
Also I like the look and feel of the gun grey m8, could I buy an m8 body casing and just switch it out? or is it to much trouble and not worth my time?
I'd get the AT&T branded M8 as it has more bands and should support T-Mobile LTE in your area (atleast mine does).
The extra bands may be beneficial if you switch carriers down the road.

Well the phone works on Indian GSM network, but this is a Verizon HTC One. Can I still flash WWE HTC One ROMs or am I screwed in that department?

well the vzw one definitely works fine on the indian gsm networks. if you want more options in terms of custom roms, yeah ask him for a return. it might be worth more hassle than it's worth though.
If you asked for an att phone then get what you want. Why settle for something you didn't ask for

You can run ViperOne on any HTC One, so i wouldn't worry about it. Plus Philz CWM Touch is available for m7vzw, and some great custom kernels.
Of course, you did ask for something and got something else, so in all rights you could ask for the correct one you ordered. I love my m7vzw though.
Edit - btw, "unlocked" htc ones are not exactly hard to come by. You can unlock any HTC One with Rumrunner as long as you do it before updating firmware. Takes a couple minutes, and you do not need to really know anything except how to install correct drivers on your pc and read.

Thanks, I'm thinking of keeping it since sending it back and forth would probably take a couple of weeks. Currently running a debloated stock Verizon KitKat with ElementalX kernel and it's working really well (of course, s-off'd and unlocked). This wasn't hard to come by on eBay, but it was the cheapest from a reputed seller, so I bought it as an upgrade from my N4.
PS: I really need to remove the stupid "x attempts remain before your data is deleted" security feature, this will be a gold mine for my friends if they see this. Any ideas on how I can do this without changing ROMs?

Just so you know, the Verizon One doesn't support 3G UMTS/HSPA+, as far as we know anyway, and is limited to a few 2G GSM bands. It's designed specifically for Verizon's CDMA + LTE network with a couple international bands thrown in for roaming purposes - not the best model to use all the time in another country. You really want the AT&T model for proper band support, unless you don't mind poor coverage in areas where your carrier uses other frequencies.
Yeah the one is capable of making global calls but not handling global data.

I am potentially new to the LG brand having spent most of the last several years with HTC devices and wondered if the longtime LG folks could help with a couple of questions:
Does LG only release carrier branded devices or do they release GSM unlocked versions as well in the US? I'll be changing to T-Mobile but I am vehemently opposed to carrier branded/locked devices and prefer to purchase direct w/o carrier specific junk.
While I know folks probably don't know about the G4 just yet but how has unlocking the bootloader worked in the past with LG. Can it be unlocked, can you buy unlocked versions, etc?
With many devices (coming from HTC) hotspot is able to be modified so that it can be used fairly easily without carrier interference. Not trying to start a debate on the value of this or if it is stealing from the carrier, etc. For me I've looked at it as I am paying for a specific amount of data, how I choose to use it should be up to me. Has it been accomplished in the past with LG devices to fairly easily use hotspot without carrier headaches?
Again thanks, just trying to nail down some details for my own knowledge to decide if this will be the best device for me. I watched the launch this morning and I am very positive coming out of that but wanted to get some feedback on some specific items that are important to me.

1. They have versions for specific US carriers, and an International version of the G3 that works internationally (Obviously) but yes, you can get unlocked international versions of the G3, or versions specific to your US carrier. You can also get version specific for countries.
2. Bootloader hasn't been unlocked for the G3. LG is ridiculously strict about this, so because the bootloader is locked, with the G3 we've had to "Bump" the custom ROMs (Sign them with legit tags) so that the bootloader will actually boot the phone with a custom ROM.
3. As for the hotspot, I've never used it on my phone so I couldn't tell you about that.
The G2 and G3 have had modded hotspot for those of us with unlimited data plans. Some models you can simply modify a file while others require a flashable ZIP. I'm hoping we get custom recovery and root for this, we've gotten it for the G2 and G3 so far.
It sounds like LG isn't as developer friendly as HTC but IMO is making a superior device. Nice thing about HTC is they sell unlocked and developer edition devices that work with either AT&T or T-Mobile and are sim unlocked and the dev ed comes with bootloader unlocked as well.
I am sure the dev community can make it functional root, etc. Hope so because I really don't want to buy an M9 and the G4 checks off so many boxes on my list of needs...

yeah I've been waiting for the perfect replacement for my ATT S3. so, rootable, removable back/battery, solid dev community, etc. this one looks just about perfect, only the root status for the ATT model is the unknown. so, let the real waiting begin. i guess the M9 is an ok option, but there's just a few things i can't love about the M9 like the camera.

yeah I have the M8 and the camera is horrid. The design was great in March of 2014 but HTC really lost me with the fact that this years design offers almost nothing new and the so called camera improvements are still not good.
I am really hoping this works out well for LG because there is so much I like about the device.

This may be kinda long but please read, I really need some actual help. I can offer a little amount of cash (Paypal) for someone to really help me to get what I want and need.
A few days ago I upgraded from a dumb flip phone that I've used for years. So the logical choice would be the new LG G4, the best phone out there as of now. So I've had it for a few days and I've noticed a few things that are really annoying me, but I'd like to focus on my main issue.
The main issue I've had is, bloatware. Now I am a computer person that if I buy a new PC / laptop, etc. I don't even use it until I reinstall Windows. I HATE bloatware more than anything, and I knew that the phone would have some bloatware that I figured I could uninstall and such. I know nothing about phones so I've been reading up and I came across the Debloater program that disables apps, which is nice but not what I want. What I want is 100% no bloat, I want the OS and drivers for the phone on the main features such as Camera, Messener+, Keyboard, etc. I don't want any extra space or ram or even the battery being used by anything besides my
regular apps.
I've tried task managers and such but even having them auto kill apps it seems that it eats my battery just as much if not worse.
I found out about rooting and ROMs in my research and from what I can tell. I need to install a custom ROM, and I believe the one that will give me what I want is CyanogenMod? I'm told its the Android OS and NOTHING more. This is what I want, but I wanna be able to still install Android updates from my phone and not having to reinstall the new version of the ROM, so I'm not sure how updating works.
I'm not sure if my phone needs to be unlocked and / or rooted to install a custom ROM? If I need to be I need someone to help me through these also.
So is there anyway that someone could lead me step by step in installing CyanogenMod? I've saw some tutorials and such but since the G4 is new everything I find on it seems kinda sketchy or really confusing, so if anyone is willing to help me on FB Chat, Team Viewer, Steam, any other messenger, PLEASE PM me ASAP. I rather not try and follow a tutorial on something this pricy, I can't buy another phone. And they never work for me it seems. Plus live person to ask questions to is something I'll need.
NOTE: I have the VS98611a model of the G4, and I have Verison right now, but I'm going to switch to Cricket since Verison removed my features like FM Radio, Themes, etc. Not way to get those back?

I believe cyanogen is on their final 5.1 build. As in no more updates or nightly revisions for stability. Unless I'm mistaken.
I haven't heard of an aosp Rom direct from Google being offered on anything aside from the nexus line, but I could be mistaken.

I'm ready to leave Verizon now so when I leave them it will be unlocked. So then that will take care of that, right? I really wanna get this done...
Either way there is a way to unlock them without having that model, yes? I've heard of people unlocking phones for years.

Your boot loader is locked. You can root the phone and remove most bloat. That is all you can do at this time.
There is no way to unlock the boot loader on your model.
Until a workaround is found, you have no other options. Enjoy the phone as is. It's a great phone

Whats the difference between the models and which is better anyways? I think I'm going to buy the unlocked version from offline.

How do I check if its unlocked? Because I was just told that it IS INFACT unlocked. HOW DO I CHECK? Thanks.
Verizon will not care at all. They will not unlock the bootloader.
Carrier unlock is completely different.
The 815 Euro model only can be unlocked from LG. T mobile does not lock their bootloaders

How do I get my disabled features back? The FM Radio, Themes, etc. Guess Verizon got rid of them. If I leave Verison will I get them back? Or since it's a Verison phone... I don't get them?

The International H815 can be unlocked and will work on GSM carriers such as ATT or T-mobile only. Basically, if your carrier uses a SIM card, it should work.

I want all my features, no bloat, unlocked, and works with Verizon and Cricket.

You can change the Network mode on the Phone, from Global, to LTE/CDMA to LTE/GSM/UMTS, so as long as the H815 has those same options, you should be able to use it with ANY carrier, Cricket, Verizon, ATT, etc. Right? Just tell me what model I need to get what my first line asks.
H815 does not work at all with CDMA, (aka Verizon/Cricket/Sprint/Boost) You're best bet is going to be rooting your phone or waiting for a bootloader unlock. (bootloader unlock might or might not ever happen) Rooting your phone will allow you to remove most of the bloatware.
Honestly, you're freaking out over nothing.
Disable any apps you don't want to see, and they'll go away forever. At this point in time, bloat is only a concern for power users who want to fine tune their phones, as a first time smart phone user you should focus only on the great new features your phone will have.

1. Verizon got rid of some of my features I'd like to use. I won't EVER be able to get this back since it's a Verizon phone.
2. I need to move to Cricket since Verizon did the above and cost more.
I'm told I can switch, but I won't know until I cancel and go to Cricket. So I wanna know what version to get and go straight to Cricket.
Just because it's my first phone doesn't mean anything. I fine tune my PC like crazy and it runs amazing. I've turned everything off on this phone and yet it's down 11% not being used while I slept. That's bad.
Seems like the G4 sucks a little because only 1 is unlocked?

Cricket is NOT CDMA anymore. Hasn't been for almost a year since AT&T bought them and converted to GSM.
OP, get the H815. It will work on cricket bands and the bootloader is unlocked. It's exactly what I will be doing soon since I'm officially sick of Samsung (Sammy fangirl here, or used to be) and them turning their phones into crapple. I have cricket service as well. Good luck.

I'd be interested in what you wind up with. What do you mean many variants? If I pick one up, I want to make sure I get the correct one (sim unlocked as well as manufacturer unlockable bootloader) that is compatible with cricket. TIA.
I've been running on an M9 for the past two years, and with the HTC11 coming around the corner, pricing on the 10 becomes very tempting. But I might be switching carriers from AT&T to Verizon, so I need to know if there's any difference now between the phones, or if they're all 'multi-carrier' at this point. IOW, do I need to look for a specific Verizon-variant or AT&T-variant, or is there no difference anymore?

Verizon one is a CDMA variant, it supports most but not all of the Unlocked version LTE bands. Also you're at the mercy of VZW for software updates (they haven't even updated to Nougat yet).
On the other hand, the Verizon variant works with all their network features (e.g advanced calling) out of the box. To get the Unlocked version working on the VZW network, you'd have have s-off first and flash new radios. This isn't difficult to do, but beware of the added cost of having to S-off.

Yes but the GSM one (referred to as U.S Unlocked) is not make specifically or only for AT&T, if that's what you mean. It's sold by HTC for use on any gsm network.
I believe there is also a version from Sprint that is a CDMA variant.

Hardware wise all models are the same. With S-OFF you can convert your model to any other.

So what you're saying is that the radio can operate on all bands, and I could theoretically buy a 'Verizon' model, re-flash the radio, and it becomes a fully functional AT&T model?
I'm asking, because back in the day, the radio hardware was different. Ive flashed ROM and radio combinations for my Inspire/Desire and M7. My present M9 is a bit of a disappointment, only because I'll never again buy a phone with a camera that lacks OIS. Hence my interest in the M10.
Unless, of course, the purported HTC11 us a world-beater, but truthfully, I'm not confident.

yes. You see lots of verizon users converting their unlocked to verizon or the other way round.
You just flash the HTC US Unlocked RUU, not just the radio. Supercid and set the mid to US unlocked.
You need s-off though..additionally it needs to be on Marshmallow. temp root on vzw nougat got patched and sunshine s-off won't work anymore.

Got it. I did Sunshine for my M9, and it was great. I'll wait to see what HTC does with the upcoming 11, and unless it's incredible - and worth $400 more than a NIB 10, I'll probably go with the 10 to save money and get a camera I can live with. It's hard to imagine what not having OIS can do to your pictures.

Because I'm getting closer to making a purchase, I'd like to touch on this one last time.
Since AT&T didn't carry the M10, I'm forced to look for a Verizon, Sprint or Tmobile variant. I prefer something New In Box, but it seems they're hard to come by, the best condition (and most adorable) being from Sprint.
But if I can't unlock and flash an RUU that would enable the phone to be fully functional on AT&T, it would wind up being an expensive paperweight.
So, any last assurances that this will work out no matter which variant I buy would really put my mind at ease.

I was in your situation and finally pulled the plug on Verizon variant. It came with an OS that is patched by Verizon blocking Sunshine S-OFF/Unlock. But browsing around XDA & google search, I found the steps and spent some $ to S-OFF/Unlock. Long story short, finally I ended up with HTC 10 Verizon variant converted to Developer Edition.
1) Will Verizon variant work with AT&T out of box? Yes, but LTE didn't work for me. I set bands to Global to get 4G. One thing I observed was unable to do OS update. I didn't invest much time on OS update because I was prepared to convert phone to unlocked well before purchase.
2) Which variant of HTC 10 is best? Unlocked if you can get good condition phone within budget. Else, refer point #1.

Seems the best price on FleaBay is about $430 with no warranty, but HTC has them for $499 brand new direct, probably because the Ocean is to be released in about three weeks.
I wonder if it makes sense to wait for the price to drop further, or buy now with a direct purchase in the hope of getting price protection and/or a warranty.
Does HTC include any warranty when buying from them?

be aware that it will just work on the verizon variant, when it is running marshmallow. temp root is patched on verizon when it is running nougat, means only way to s-off would be a javacard/mail in service handled by @jcase for example.

Yes. The WWE version supports LTE. All M8 versions support it afaik
I'm struggling with this. Tried researching it. I know the M8's all have LTE capabilities...the problem is AT&T in the US doesn't cover the same bands or frequencies to support 4G LTE that they do in Europe. So my international version doesn't get LTE. The most I get is HSPA+. I also couldn't find any info on HD Voice which I'm guessing is the same thing as VoLTE or LTE. Which is what is going to be required in order for the phone to work in any fashion on the AT&T network. Or any network for that matter when they decide to drop 3G. I know for a FACT that the US version of the M8 is on the list of phones that WILL work when they make the change. It shows the M8 on the list but it doesn't distinguish between domestic or international versions.

What does it say in your bootloader menu?
Locked or unlocked?
Security on or off?
MID/Modelid?
CID?
You may be able to flash the latest AT&T RUU to get AT&T firmware on your phone.
I can tell you with that information, and give you a link to the RUU and instructions on how to flash it.
I've never accessed the boot loader menu. Never had a reason to. Thought about flashing phones before but didn't want to risk bricking it. And never really needed to change stock version for my needs.
That being said I imagine it's locked with security on. The numbers you're asking for should be standard for international version so I don't think they are relevant. I have a prepaid account through AT&T for at least 10 years. Just been flipping sim card to newer unlocked phones. Got this through Amazon. Previously had US version but after time had battery issues. But I already have access to the AT&T network. And it wouldn't matter if I switched networks. None of the US companies use the bands and frequencies that Europe does for LTE.
. My understanding of it from my research is that it's not firmware that decides that but the hardware and antenna capabilities. The phone literally won't look for those bands or frequencies. At least that's my understanding.

You bought it second hand? It might be S-Off. Bootloader might be locked, but with S-Off (security off) it shouldn't matter.
As far as firmware not deciding the bands, that's not entirely true. Changing the MID to AT&T's and changing the CID to either that or SuperCID would fix it. That would be a part of flashing the RUU. You'll need the AT&T or SuperCID to flash it in the first place, but the MID changes after the RUU flash iirc.
As far as getting S-Off, you can get that for $25. If you want that I can walk you through everything. I don't mind giving FULL instructions although I try to let users do a little searching of their own.
Feel free to PM me if you want to try. Flashing the RUU itself is super easy. Changing CID/MID will take you using fastboot commands from your PC

Yep. 7yrs ago one of the best phones came out. I loved my M8. It's bricked now though. The screen got screwed and charging was taking forever and I tried taking it apart to fix it and I failed. lol. Doing hardware repairs isn't in my nature. No patience for that. Too small and fragile. But I still use my HTC 10 during weekdays for an mp3 player at work
Yup...Boomsound! Can't beat it. Otherwise I wouldn't have this dilemma in the first place. Thought about changing my old battery but realized how complicated it was and no guarantee it would work. And paying to get it fixed...may as well apply those funds to a new phone. Expensive! Tried to get the HTC 10 new. Wound up with the international version (Amazon...lol)with problems from the start. Had to return it before I could even hear how good it sounded. I wanted to cry. Now I'm stuck trying to find high quality sound on a reasonably priced phone that still has the damn headphone jack. Ugh.

That's why I'm still rocking the 10 although I have a Pixel 2XL and Pixel 5 in full working order. 3.5mm jack AND premium audio AND expandable storage to boot.

I was thinking about checking out the pixels. I heard they have decent sound. I'm going to try and get my US version M8 battery replaced for $75 and hope that's the only problem with it. On top of looking for a new phone. Just can't seem to let it go...lol. Should have done this a year ago. It will give me more time and ultimately be a music player for my car.
But I'm really contacting you about the international version. I found something and would like your opinion. It's about changing the bands.
You'll need to watch it on YouTube or rather read the description or instructions the video gives below it. The video is hard to follow. And I don't know if I need special software to do it this way.
