[Q] General rooting and ROM questions

Hi guys, I've had a Bell-branded Desire Z (on AT&T's network) for some time now, but I've never gotten around to rooting / flashing a different ROM on it. Since I have some free time this weekend, I figure I'll finally tackle it. Have a few general questions though:
1) Is the method listed in the guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160 still the best method for rooting a desire Z? I've heard bad things about visionary, but every rooting method I've read seem to involve it in some way.
2) with S-OFF, am I free to flash any Desire Z / G2 ROM? or will only certain ROMs work with a Bell Desire Z? Any specific recommendation on ROMs? I'm planning on trying out CM7, then going from there
3) What is the best method for backing up my current image + a few other things (mostly contacts and SMS)? Titaniumbackup gets thrown around a lot, but I only have a handful of apps, and really would rather just redownload them then go through the trouble of backing them up

that is going to be your safest way to root your vision. eventhough this is longer, there is a lot less chance of bricking your phone. the one you listed is very simple to do, but runs a high risk of turning your phone into a paper weight.
when you do have your phone completely s off, you now have every right to flash kernels, roms, and other things. you can find all of the things i just listed over in the development forum on the g2/desire z. download rom manager from the market. that allows you to back up your current rom, flash the latest recovery and so on. it just allows you to not have to manually install everything. it has the popular g2 roms under the "download rom section".
in terms of backing up everything, there are a few different options. every contact to save is linked to your gmail account, so whatever rom you flash and load youll always have those contacts coming with you. thats the beauty of google and gmail on a android device! but with rom manager, you can back up your current rom and image with that app and save it to your sd card. BEFORE YOU FLASH ANY ROM, OR BEGIN TO START TRYING OUT ROMS, BACK UP YOUR STOCK ROM. whenever i got my g2 when it first came out, i made a nandroid backup of my stock rom and i still have it. when i originally backed it up, i just named it "stock" and havent messed with it since. i just know that i have the stock image(it helps me sleep at night). jk, heh. for your text messages and stuff, download sms backup from the market and you can back everything up through that. all of the apps that you download, including the paid ones of course, travel with you between roms, etc.

I actually went ahead and used that method in the guide since upon further research, it seems that visonary was only causing issues when it was use for perm root; temp root, which is what that method uses visionary for seems to work fine.
So did that, reboot into the bootloader, confirmed that I had S-OFF on the first line.
Installed ROM manager from the market
Flashed Clockwork recovery
Booted into recovery and did a system backup to SD card
Rebooted and decided to download the Virtuous ROM from ROM manager
Told it to reboot into recovery and flash that image, wiping all data and settings
Got stuck on an bootup loop (HTC logo + start up sound -> black screen -> HTC logo + startup sound ad infinitum)
Rebooted into recovery, and did a restore from the backup (whew)
Phone seems to be working fine now
Now I'm trying to figure out what went wrong... any ideas?

K, I redownloaded virtuous from XDA, checked the MD5, and tried to flash it again.
Same problem, infinite loop on startup screen.
Do i need to flash the engineering hboot? I was under the impression that that wasn't necessary for using custom ROMs.
Still can't figure out what's wrong.

Have you tried flashing through CWM directly? I really don't like ROM Manager for flashing new ROMs and seems to oversimplify the process to allow green users to get on the flashing wagon.
I would boot into CWM (camera + power i think) and do a complete wipe + flash from in there. I have never had an issue with doing things directly from recovery and I have a Bell DZ as well. It's long since lost it's blue and white colours, but that was it's origin

The question i have here is about my Desire Z ( Bell Cannada ).
A few months ago we received a OTA update. So its currently running on Android 2.2.1 : Build - 1.84.666.2 CL322105, and its SUPER slow! Is it still possible to root this version?
I want to install the Gingerbread version on my phone, but i cant find instructions to root this OS version to be able to do so.
Or should i wait till the Official gingerbread Os to come out for our phones?
Ive been searching every where's for this info and everything i find is all back dated to last yr and nothing up-to-date after the OTA.
I hope this question is not TOO n00bish as i tried to search every where for it, and ether i could not find it or i did not enter the correct word search to get a result i needed.

heh. that actually worked. Flashed directly from CWM recovery and it booted up with no issues.
Guess I know not to flash from ROM manager anymore

You do not need to debrand to flash custom ROMs to the Bell Canada Desire Z.

Interesting, I've flashed many ROMs from ROM Manager on my Bell Canada DZ, and never had an issue. That said, flashing from recovery is really not any harder, so if it works, it works.

Yeah, I assumed that flashing from ROM manager just meant that it rebooted to recovery and flashed it from there. I guess there is a difference.
Either way, been playing with Virtuous 1.0.2 for a few days now, really like this ROM, but I'm itching to try out something different now. Man, I can see this is going to develop into a time consuming hobby.
Plus, I'm going to need a bigger SD card to store all of these ROMs + backup =X
Oh, another noob question; I've come across a few zip files that included a system folder and an META-INF folder. How exactly do I install these?

G2 only works with at&t
alright here it is my t-mobile G2 won't connect to the t-mobile network at all, I've went through 3 SIM cards because this thing use to kill the SIM card from working on other t-mobile phones and it works perfectly fine on at&t network. so I've unlocked so it will work on at&t just to see if it would work. so i gave p and bought a MT 4G, but i still want to know if the G2 is fixable because I'm just about ready to throw in the towel this is what I've tried to resolve the problem called t-mobile they ended up saying just return the phone but i can't since i didn't buy it from them. Called them again got the unlock code. I've flashed the radio a few times. I've also just got the leaked 2.3.3 update and nothing has worked. It find t-mobile network but says your SIM card isn't allowed to connect to this network then after trying again it says unable to connect to network please try again later.
Just so frustrating i don't know what to do just about to say forget it. this thread is my last resort.

i used this method on my G2 just yesterday and put on CM7.0.3. the only issues i came across were because i restored everything (should have just done apps and app data) using Titanium, which put me in a boot loop. I'm dumb, so i did it twice before i figured out what was the problem. the thread has a comment about how Visionary is dangerous, but the OP responded that since it is only used to gain temp root, there should be no problems.

How to: Stop Sprint V9 update notification from nagging you

So I've been relatively happy with my rooted (but not unlocked) OG running V8 and see no need to upgrade to V9 right now. When JB is released, that will be a different story but for now, I don't have the time to do all the proper research on how to unlock (I understand though that its relatively simple with FreeGee), download a stock rooted V9, install, then reload all my apps and settings (only to do it all again in another month or two when JB is hopefully released). Yes, I know that I can simply do a Titanium Backup and restore from that but I always like to do clean installs of all my apps and settings after a ROM upgrade. It just makes for a more stable phone in the long run has been my experience. And so it feels like V9 has been nagging me every 10 seconds to update but due to the fact that I would lose root and the ability to unlock, I did not want to tell it ok to update. So I tried the method that I have used to prevent my Nexus 7 from also nagging me to update and after 24 hours, it seems to have also worked on the OG. The steps are below and of course, you do this at your own risk as I will not be responsible if it has unintended consequences for your phone.
- Install Autostarts app from Google Play (this is a pay app and there may be other free apps that do the same thing but this is what I used)
- Go to "After Startup" (it may take a minute or two to load everything and you may get a message that the app is not responding. Just tell the popup dialog to continue waiting.)
- Scroll down until you see "Google Services Framework"
- There should be several of them. For me it was the third one. Tap it and read the bottom of the popup to find out. It will say "Receiver com.google.android.gsf.update.SystemUpdateService. .."..
- Disable it, exit out of the app, and reboot.
Its been 24 hours and so far, no more V9 update notifications from Sprint. Of course, if you ever want to update your phone via the standard OTA method, you will need to re-enable the service you disabled above. Hope this helps.

Seems to work for me also, although it's only been an hour or so..I was getting really tired of that notification every time I turned the thing on.

will try this but with a diff app.. currently using "Autorun Manager" and no Google service framework found

I used Autostart manager (free) for anyone doesn't want to pay $1.50.. I found the serviceupdate and disabled it.will let you know how it is after a day.

this can aslo be done with any root browser / explorer and for free
all you need to do is find the bulid.prop and open in text edidtor and change all zv8 to zv9 save changes and re-boot done deal no more update. Of course every time you flash a rom you will need to redo this until zv9 is hacked and able to flashed as a new firmware from source.
This was tought to me by Adrielvelazquez while using his lifeless rom based off zv9

All I can tell you is that it will definitely work with the pay Autostarts app I referenced in the first post. I cannot vouch for the one that you tried.

If you want to PM me I can walk you through everything. All you have to do is click two buttons in an app and restart to get unlocked, and recovery. Then you can flash mine, adriel, or b-reezy's versions of the ZV9 rom, which shouldnt erase anything from ZV8, but can also mess up.

Saved me, crap was driving me insane. Almost just updated so i wouldnt have to deal with it anymore

Worked as advertised.
I used the alternative method with the other app but didn't work for me

As mentioned somewhere else here. Editing the build.prop helps. Theres 3 line with ZV8, change them all with ZV9. That works for me.

Even months down the road this is still a useful post. Of course were on ZVC now, but I stick to some custom ZVB ROMs because of speed tweaks and stability. ZVC custom roms have been having some issues such as switching from WiFi to data.
I used this trick to stop the ZVC update harassment. Besides, if I'm not mistaking, accepting the update can brick you.

Theres always that, but certain roms such as AdriVelazquez' Lifeless rom and Stock Deodexed are on ZVB, while the latest is ZVC. I use his Lifeless rom (14) which has some nice tweaks packed in the Aroma installer. 100% stable IMO. ZVC stock BASED roms like the OpTimuS 4.6 have some issues like problems when switching between wifi and data. Also the battery life can get pretty inaccurate when it reaches 15%.
Which leads me to stick to the ZVB roms by AdriVelazquez.

I'm just starting to learn the LG aspects of the OS,which is totally different from HTC,Acer and Casio,hahahaha,in which i'm just learning Casio also.

LG is pretty simple. No crazy UI twists, no crazy hocus pocus bricks, and not a hard one to root. Most LG's just require the LGPwn app, and some such as the LG Optimus G can have an unlocked BL thru FreeGee, making the entire process computer free! HTC's I hate because of the whole S-On/S-Off thing. Last week or so I got lucky in getting an HTC One S already S-Off. Yesterday I went back to the past and gote another HTC Evo 4G LTE and its S-On. there's a simple software to get it S-Off but it requires internet, and I depend on my phones so much that I have sold my laptops and got stuck with an old "internet-less" one. As for Casio, Ive seen one or two of their geared up looking phones but no recent ones. In terms of rooting and bootloaders, Samsungs are pretty easy, Asus are pretty easy, Kindles are pretty easy NOW etc.

Indeed it can, softbrick but a brick nonetheless. I was on ZVB rooted but with a LOCKED bootloader, and the OTA for ZVC softbricked me. I had to lgnpst back.

[Q] Synergy Rom Help

Hi guys, I have some noobish questions for you. After reading around and searching, I just cant seem to find an answer.
I installed Synergy Rom with Ktoonsez kernel yesterday and while the Rom and kernel have been one of the best set ups I have ever used on my GS3 (Tmobile) I have two issues.
1. I have very little data. It comes, it goes. If any, the signal is extremely weak. Am I supposed to flash a radio, is this safe, I have never done this before so i'm not sure.
2. When installing the rom, I opted to use the stock android messenger vs the touchwiz one. I am having some issues sending MMS messages and was wondering if there was a fix for this somewhere or if it required a reflash.
I posted in here because I figured it is not a rom related issue, yet just me not knowing how to address these problems.
Any help is appreciated!

Edit: I believe I may have just figured something out. I realized I had a sprint recovery on my phone, so when installing the rom I believe that the installer thinks my phone is the sprint variant. Would this have anything to do with signal issues or MMS issues for that matter. Before reinstalling everything I wanted to see if anybody knew if it would fix the problem. Like I said before, I do get signal, its just not extremely strong.

First, I recommend TWRP Recovery. You can obtain this by installing goo manager from the Play Store. To install, open goo manager, hit the menu key, select 'Install OpenRecoveryScript'. This will install TWRP recovery. Go into your recovery and make a NAND backup. Then wipe data/delvik/cache/system. Now, install Synergy and select Tmobile. Next, what I did, was did a full installation. Yes, this installs everything but you can use root browser (or some other root file manager) and fine tweak the ROM with what you do not want. I had a similar issue but I had NO data/signal/service...nothing. Hope this helps. Just in case, make sure you know how to flash back to stock, should something go wrong. Good luck!

I appreciate the help but I can not seem to get my phone to be recognized as a tmobile device. I do not see an option to select tmobile anywhere when flashing.

For anybody else having this issue, I just found my problem...
I installed twrp to my device yet was still having the same issue. I realized that while I was installing twrp, the device was still reading as a sprint variant because I was on the flashed rom that detected my device that way in the first place. I flashed a recovery via odin specifically for my tmobile s3 and got right to where I needed to be. All issues fixed and rom is running perfectly! :good:

I had the same problem with my d2tmo with Slim and Syn. Both use a single rom for both AT&T and T-Mobile since the devices are very similar. I had to use Build.Prop Editor to change the values in the build.prop file to change from AT&T to T-Mobile values. However doing so will cancel out OTA updates and will have to update manually. I ended up going back to CM 10.1 nightly builds (slim/syn is based off cm anyways) and changed my LCD density in the build.prop and added a majority of the mods Slim/Syn uses.

Trying to use tmobile sim

I have read around and im completely lost now. I have the ls980 and i have read i can use the perm sim unlock and i read somewhere that i can just flash a cloudy rom and choose the tmobile variant. Sorry if im being a burden im just trying to be safe.

While the info is out there, even with searching it can be tough to find the specific info one needs to get this stuff done - it's one of the biggest complaints I've always had about forums online (that's not a jab at XDA directly, it's just how it is everywhere).
Having said that the process is fairly simple if you want to use your Sprint G2 with T-Mobile which is what I do. I've had mine about 2 weeks now and the first time I went through the whole process of just trying to get it working properly on the stock Sprint ROM (ZVD build, hadn't updated to ZVE when I first got the G2) I finally got pissed at how convoluted the process is to just do the SIM unlock for GSM operation. That was about the time I found a post that made it quite clear as the "easiest" way to use the Sprint G2 with T-Mobile and that's just flash CloudyG3 and pop in a SIM card and you're pretty much good to go because Cloudfyfa (creator of the ROM) had done all the footwork for us.
So, that's what I eventually did and it's been working since that first time. The process, as stated, is a simple one (at least how I do it). Here's what you need:
- you need the G2 running a stock Sprint ROM, either ZVC, ZVD, or even ZVE at this point. I doubt yours will be running anything older (like ZV8) so whatever, just get a current stock Sprint ROM on it and you're ready to roll - use the .tot method or whatever, it's up to you
- once you're pure stock, you need to root it and the tool I prefer to use for that purpose is ioroot. A lot of people favor towelroot which works just the same overall and can be done just installing the towelroot apk which you can grab from the website it's hosted at (you can find that yourself)
- after you're rooted, you can either go to the Play Market and download AutoRec by Cloudyfa or find it here in the dedicated thread at XDA - install the APK, run it, accept the risk by clicking OK, then let it install recovery (hence the name, AutoRec(overy). It does everything for you, basically
- once recovery is installed, my suggestion is to boot into recovery at least one time to verify it's installed and working - after that, boot back into the stock ROM, attach the G2 to a computer and copy over the CloudyG3 ROM archive to the G2's internal storage (I put mine in the Download folder, sometimes stuff doesn't appear or work correctly if it's in the root directory but that's my personal way of doing things), either v2.0 or v2.1, it's your choice. I'm still using v2.0 because it just works and I have zero issues with it so far, no sense breaking something for no good reason, but that's just me
- once the ROM archive is copied to the internal storage, reboot into recovery, MAKE A BACKUP OF THE STOCK ROM AT THIS POINT - DO NOT INSTALL CLOUDYG3 TILL YOU'VE DONE A FULL BACKUP OF THE STOCK ROM - seriously, take heed of this advice or else you might find yourself stuck in a situation where you'll have to go all the way back to stock again with a clean flash, then root, then install recovery, etc. It's easier just to do the stock ROM backup right then and there at that point before proceeding
- now, after all that is done and the backup is complete, go back to "home" in recovery and then tap Wipe, slide the slider where it says "Swipe to Factory Reset) and wait the few seconds it takes to do that, when done hit the Home icon again, then tap Install, find the CloudyG3 zip archive, select it, get it started
- after a few moments the Aroma installer will come up, choose to continue, scroll down just a bit to select the LS980 (please make sure you get the right one as you could trash the G2 if you don't) then step through the app choices you want or don't want. If you install v2.1 it will ask you if you want the ROM odexed or deodexed, that's your choice there and it gives you a little tip on what each type does best, so make the choice and then finish the install
- when it's complete reboot and you should be good to go
After all that you can choose to install a custom kernel and I'll go ahead and say right now that installing Dorimanx's kernel for the LS980. I currently use the (now) older 8.7 version with great success, but it's up to 8.9 as of today so, experiment if you want, it's your call.

Depending on what's available in your area, and the age of the SIM card, you should already have APNs listed for T-Mobile (at least when you put a T-Mobile SIM card in). Use the *#*#4636#*#* menu to change the preferred network type to either WCDMA only (which is what I use for HSPA+) or LTE/GSM/WCDMA and see what happens. On that same screen wait for it to connect and show you what network type you're accessing with.
Once you do have the network type "locked in," then go into the Mobile networks menu (under Settings- Tethering & networks), hit APNs and you should see several listed. Mine shows MetroPCS LTE (since T-Mobile now owns MetroPCS), the old T-Mobile standard one (epc.tmobile.com), the newer fast one (fast.t-mobile.com and note the hyphen there, it's required if you're putting it in manually), then I have the IPv6 one as well followed by one for Simple mobile and StraightTalk T-Mobile too (pic relevant I guess and speaks for itself).
I use WDCMA only since here in Las Vegas the blanketed HSPA+ coverage is pretty awesome and the LTE coverage just... well, it just ain't so great to me, especially inside buildings.

There are some people that report they can't or don't get the LTE working properly with this method and CloudyG3, there is or was some kind of fix available where iirc you delete some simple config file that's related to LTE settings and then restart the G2 and it'll kick in and work - I cannot say for sure what the fix is but if you do more searching you'll probably find it, that is if you need or plan to use LTE mode with T-Mobile. I get close to the theoretical 42Mbps using HSPA+ and I'm very happy with that so that's all I care to bother with.

LG G3 from FreedomPop, marshmallow or rom?

So i bought a FreedomPop LG G3 on sale and i ended up activating it to FreedomPop and i rooted it, and im wondering if i can install Marshmallow or cygn on it, my concern is.. before i bought the LG G3 i had a first Gen MOTO G from TextNow with there own unique ROM and when i installed lollipop on it, since the phone has no sim card the phone lost connection to TextNow and was basically useless outside the house so i had to ask TextNow to send me their unique Rom which they did and after installing it everything came back to normal.
now my lg g3 has a sim card slot, and came with sprint apps on it and showing sprint on lockscreen and everything. calls can be made from the android call app but texts messages are only available through FreedomPop text app.
i asked FreedomPop to unlock my phone and they said no problem doing it for me but i ended up not doing it since i do want to stay with them but then i want a different ROM.
so my questions are:
1.is there a way to backup an stock rom that came with the device so i can restore it just like i did on my TextNow incase i lose connection like before?
2.is there a way to backup FreedomPop like apps and restore it after changing the rom? will they work after installing them?
3.should i install a different rom?
4.anyone had an experience with such "locked" phones or even FreedomPop phone and can tell me how did it work for him?

If it has sprint apps it is probably an ls990; check in "about phone" settings to make sure. So basically follow the ls990 thread(s) to see how to get recovery on it... http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-lg-g3 . Since you have root already installing a recovery should be a simple process via flashify or autorec apps - but you need to absolutely make sure you install the correct recovery file with the bump exploit or you may softbrick and have to restore with a PC. (bump is an lg g3 exploit needed for our device as we don't have a true bootloader unlock)
Re #1: if/when you put TWRP recovery on your phone you can make a backup of your freedompop stock ROM so you can restore it if you need to.
Re #2: since you're rooted you can backup all of your apps and their data with titanium or something similar. I use titanium pro because it allows you to make a zip file you can flash in TWRP while flashing your ROM, gapps, etc. & it restores your app data too; super convenient time saver. As far as will the freedompop apps work on a different ROM - they should; trying to restore them and see if they work might be the best way to go there. As long as you have a ROM backup you can restore - why not give em a try?
Re #3: that's subjective and up to you. Some people prefer stock features(especially the camera) and some xposed mods to get some extra tweaks, some people prefer custom ROMs with tons of features and the newest Android version. Again, that's on you to decide. BTW, if you do go custom ROM there are decent camera ports available that come close to stock quality.
Re #4: I have not, but I'm guessing you may need to take note of your APN settings before you change ROMs as they may be unique to freedompop & could mess up your data/text if they are not set right. That seems to be the biggest issue with people using different carriers.

Q#2.i dont care much about camera features and also not looking for a lot of tweaks all i look for is to keep my ram and cpu power low and there for available at all time so basically having the phone act and react as fast as possible. can i achieve that with one of the different roms or having stock marshmallow installed?

Hey...sorry I missed the notification that you responded...my bad.
Recovery - TWRP recovery which allows you to backup your current ROM, wipe your device, and install ROMs. You have to have it installed if you want to run any custom ROMs. It is imperative that you use the correct file or you may bork all your software, softbrick, and re-flash on a PC. If you are unsure on how to install TWRP then read, read & ask questions in the appropriate forums - & watch youtube videos if you need guidance on how to install it.
The link I posted was for your device. You can search in the threads for anything from ROMs, TWRP, root, kernels, and troubleshooting if you get stuck.
Stock marshmallow is pretty quick & there are some pure AOSP or basic CM builds available that may suit your needs...just have to sample for yourself to see what's best.
APN settings: settings, cellular networks, access point names; if you see a feedompop apn(or anything that isn't sprint) write down the fields, or take a screenshot and email it to yourself for reference.
Having TWRP recovery saves you from your mistakes. Once you get it installed you can make backups that you can always restore if you experiment with new ROMs or tweaks, etc. It is the backbone of flashing and modifying your phone.

So i went with liquid smooth rom and after having some issues with titanium backup restoring apps i tried a few things and ended up having all system apps crashing on boot (dialer etc...) so i restored back to stock rom and everything works fine but now when i wanted to go back to liquid smooth TWRP says i cant and that the install files might be incomplete, actually it says that way about gapps too.. why is that? also having the problems i just mentioned with the rom, does that mean the rom is not stable.. or it is something i did? should i even try going back to that rom? i mean i kind of liked it in the 2 hours i got to test it before everything crashed. i went throught the link you sent me and eventually figured out that there is a rom section on top of the page where i can actually see the roms which i didnt realize that before, seems like restoring function on TWRP works great but i wish there was a way to just know which rom would work best for my phone in terms of performance which is what im looking for.

ended up having all system apps crashing on boot
My guess is maybe you included system apps in your titanium backup? They are the ones listed in red; you don't want to include any system apps in your app restore/update.zip because they may be incompatible with the ROM you are flashing. So unless you read in the liquid smooth thread of other users having issues, I would doubt the ROM itself caused things to crash.
As far as the TWRP error about incomplete files...I'm not quite sure what that means. But you can take a screenshot while in TWRP(vol down + power) and post it up here to better explain the issue.
If you want to try liquid again try a fresh download of the ROM and fresh download of gapps(make sure you're downloading the correct gapps - LP & MM use different ones). If you run into problems with crashes again, try and flash just the ROM by itself to help determine if the errors are caused by the ROM or the gapps you're using.
I like liquid smooth...used to use it on my galaxy nexus back in the day. There are lots of good ones out there, itjust depends what you like. I usually use Tesla(aosp), but aokp and turbo are both really nice too. If you prefer CM based ROMs there are a ton of them too. Pick your poison.
So to clarify: it sounds like you did everything right - except don't restore system apps with titanium, make sure your gapps are compatible with your ROM, and have fun flashing
