I have read around and im completely lost now. I have the ls980 and i have read i can use the perm sim unlock and i read somewhere that i can just flash a cloudy rom and choose the tmobile variant. Sorry if im being a burden im just trying to be safe.
While the info is out there, even with searching it can be tough to find the specific info one needs to get this stuff done - it's one of the biggest complaints I've always had about forums online (that's not a jab at XDA directly, it's just how it is everywhere).
Having said that the process is fairly simple if you want to use your Sprint G2 with T-Mobile which is what I do. I've had mine about 2 weeks now and the first time I went through the whole process of just trying to get it working properly on the stock Sprint ROM (ZVD build, hadn't updated to ZVE when I first got the G2) I finally got pissed at how convoluted the process is to just do the SIM unlock for GSM operation. That was about the time I found a post that made it quite clear as the "easiest" way to use the Sprint G2 with T-Mobile and that's just flash CloudyG3 and pop in a SIM card and you're pretty much good to go because Cloudfyfa (creator of the ROM) had done all the footwork for us.
So, that's what I eventually did and it's been working since that first time. The process, as stated, is a simple one (at least how I do it). Here's what you need:
- you need the G2 running a stock Sprint ROM, either ZVC, ZVD, or even ZVE at this point. I doubt yours will be running anything older (like ZV8) so whatever, just get a current stock Sprint ROM on it and you're ready to roll - use the .tot method or whatever, it's up to you
- once you're pure stock, you need to root it and the tool I prefer to use for that purpose is ioroot. A lot of people favor towelroot which works just the same overall and can be done just installing the towelroot apk which you can grab from the website it's hosted at (you can find that yourself)
- after you're rooted, you can either go to the Play Market and download AutoRec by Cloudyfa or find it here in the dedicated thread at XDA - install the APK, run it, accept the risk by clicking OK, then let it install recovery (hence the name, AutoRec(overy). It does everything for you, basically
- once recovery is installed, my suggestion is to boot into recovery at least one time to verify it's installed and working - after that, boot back into the stock ROM, attach the G2 to a computer and copy over the CloudyG3 ROM archive to the G2's internal storage (I put mine in the Download folder, sometimes stuff doesn't appear or work correctly if it's in the root directory but that's my personal way of doing things), either v2.0 or v2.1, it's your choice. I'm still using v2.0 because it just works and I have zero issues with it so far, no sense breaking something for no good reason, but that's just me
- once the ROM archive is copied to the internal storage, reboot into recovery, MAKE A BACKUP OF THE STOCK ROM AT THIS POINT - DO NOT INSTALL CLOUDYG3 TILL YOU'VE DONE A FULL BACKUP OF THE STOCK ROM - seriously, take heed of this advice or else you might find yourself stuck in a situation where you'll have to go all the way back to stock again with a clean flash, then root, then install recovery, etc. It's easier just to do the stock ROM backup right then and there at that point before proceeding
- now, after all that is done and the backup is complete, go back to "home" in recovery and then tap Wipe, slide the slider where it says "Swipe to Factory Reset) and wait the few seconds it takes to do that, when done hit the Home icon again, then tap Install, find the CloudyG3 zip archive, select it, get it started
- after a few moments the Aroma installer will come up, choose to continue, scroll down just a bit to select the LS980 (please make sure you get the right one as you could trash the G2 if you don't) then step through the app choices you want or don't want. If you install v2.1 it will ask you if you want the ROM odexed or deodexed, that's your choice there and it gives you a little tip on what each type does best, so make the choice and then finish the install
- when it's complete reboot and you should be good to go
After all that you can choose to install a custom kernel and I'll go ahead and say right now that installing Dorimanx's kernel for the LS980. I currently use the (now) older 8.7 version with great success, but it's up to 8.9 as of today so, experiment if you want, it's your call.
That should get you going, good luck.
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH BRO. It worked on the first try but how should i go about putting apns in? I know the most im probably getting is 2g-3g
Depending on what's available in your area, and the age of the SIM card, you should already have APNs listed for T-Mobile (at least when you put a T-Mobile SIM card in). Use the *#*#4636#*#* menu to change the preferred network type to either WCDMA only (which is what I use for HSPA+) or LTE/GSM/WCDMA and see what happens. On that same screen wait for it to connect and show you what network type you're accessing with.
Once you do have the network type "locked in," then go into the Mobile networks menu (under Settings- Tethering & networks), hit APNs and you should see several listed. Mine shows MetroPCS LTE (since T-Mobile now owns MetroPCS), the old T-Mobile standard one (epc.tmobile.com), the newer fast one (fast.t-mobile.com and note the hyphen there, it's required if you're putting it in manually), then I have the IPv6 one as well followed by one for Simple mobile and StraightTalk T-Mobile too (pic relevant I guess and speaks for itself).
I use WDCMA only since here in Las Vegas the blanketed HSPA+ coverage is pretty awesome and the LTE coverage just... well, it just ain't so great to me, especially inside buildings.
Hope this helps...
ps
There are some people that report they can't or don't get the LTE working properly with this method and CloudyG3, there is or was some kind of fix available where iirc you delete some simple config file that's related to LTE settings and then restart the G2 and it'll kick in and work - I cannot say for sure what the fix is but if you do more searching you'll probably find it, that is if you need or plan to use LTE mode with T-Mobile. I get close to the theoretical 42Mbps using HSPA+ and I'm very happy with that so that's all I care to bother with.

I have an evo 4g, and I would like to root the phone, simply to run force roam, so that I can roam to verizon in weak sprint areas, instead of the phone constantly trying to flip back and forth and killing my battery.
I don't want to run a custom rom, I just want to keep the stock rom. The phone is on 2.2, with the latest update applied.
I found these instructions on the web: [ for some reason I can't post the link, anyway, it is the evo 4g root instructions on android central]
-------
1. Download this file (PC36IMG.zip). Move it to the root (as in top level) of the Evo's storage card.
2. Turn the phone off. Once it is, hold down the volume button and the power button until you get a white screen and some text. You're now in the bootloader. It should automatically start checking the PC36IMG.zip file you put on the card.
3. Once it's done, it'll list all the images on the card and ask if you want to flash. (This is your last chance to back out.) Say yes, and we're on our way. It'll look like this as it's going:
4. After it's done, it'll ask if you want to reboot. Surely.
That's it. You have a rooted ROM. You'll want to rename (or delete) the PC36IMG.zip image file that you put on the card, so that next time you enter the bootloader it won't try to automatically update again. You can do that by plugging in the phone, choosing "HTC Sync" and going to your favorite command line prompt and typing:
adb shell mv /sdcard/PC36IMG.zip /sdcard/root-PC36IMG.zip
Leave the phone plugged in if you want to go on to the next section and load the custom recovery. (After the break, for cleanliness.) Otherwise, you're done.
-------------
Can I still run those instructions with the latest update applied, and will that allow me to simply run programs that need root and keep my current rom as is?
Thank You
If unrevoked works on the newest OTA that's your best bet. It also flashes a custom recovery and sets S-off. that way if an OTA takes your root away it can always be undone.
I thought all I wanted was roam and a week after using unrevoked a new update for froyo appears. I'd already removed a bunch of sprint crap so my phone wouldn't take the update. I just flashed a stock rooted version of the update along with the new radio and pri. Joeykrim had a rooted version up the same day the update came out.
I was scared of flashing myself but, it's really not a big deal.
BTW MrGregs roam control works great.
I have an Epic 4G (rooted), and I want to do the same thing, but I also want to keep a stock ROM. I don't really want to change much at all, I just want to be able to force my phone to roam onto Verizon.
I am pretty sure there is an app on the market that allows you to force roam. I think it is like 4 or 5$ though.
personally, I have rooted my evo (toast method) and use CyanogenMod 6.0 to force roam (it has a built in feature)
Thanks for the replies. I am actually coming from a Nexus One and a G1 before that, where I ran CM most of the time, so I am not opposed or afraid of rooting the device and running custom roms. It is just that I am still in my 30 day evaluation period on Sprint, so I don't want to go too far, but I was looking to possibly root if it was something simple that I could revert if needed. At this time, All I want to do is run the force roaming app from the market that was mentioned, but it does require root access.

If ur rooted mrgreggs app will do the job for you. I think it's 3 or 4 bucks, email him first and check if your phone is compatible.

Where is the option in CyanogenMod to force roaming?
Hi guys, I've had a Bell-branded Desire Z (on AT&T's network) for some time now, but I've never gotten around to rooting / flashing a different ROM on it. Since I have some free time this weekend, I figure I'll finally tackle it. Have a few general questions though:
1) Is the method listed in the guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160 still the best method for rooting a desire Z? I've heard bad things about visionary, but every rooting method I've read seem to involve it in some way.
2) with S-OFF, am I free to flash any Desire Z / G2 ROM? or will only certain ROMs work with a Bell Desire Z? Any specific recommendation on ROMs? I'm planning on trying out CM7, then going from there
3) What is the best method for backing up my current image + a few other things (mostly contacts and SMS)? Titaniumbackup gets thrown around a lot, but I only have a handful of apps, and really would rather just redownload them then go through the trouble of backing them up
Thanks
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=TMobile_G2:_Rooting
that is going to be your safest way to root your vision. eventhough this is longer, there is a lot less chance of bricking your phone. the one you listed is very simple to do, but runs a high risk of turning your phone into a paper weight.
when you do have your phone completely s off, you now have every right to flash kernels, roms, and other things. you can find all of the things i just listed over in the development forum on the g2/desire z. download rom manager from the market. that allows you to back up your current rom, flash the latest recovery and so on. it just allows you to not have to manually install everything. it has the popular g2 roms under the "download rom section".
in terms of backing up everything, there are a few different options. every contact to save is linked to your gmail account, so whatever rom you flash and load youll always have those contacts coming with you. thats the beauty of google and gmail on a android device! but with rom manager, you can back up your current rom and image with that app and save it to your sd card. BEFORE YOU FLASH ANY ROM, OR BEGIN TO START TRYING OUT ROMS, BACK UP YOUR STOCK ROM. whenever i got my g2 when it first came out, i made a nandroid backup of my stock rom and i still have it. when i originally backed it up, i just named it "stock" and havent messed with it since. i just know that i have the stock image(it helps me sleep at night). jk, heh. for your text messages and stuff, download sms backup from the market and you can back everything up through that. all of the apps that you download, including the paid ones of course, travel with you between roms, etc.
i hope i helped ya out, and i wish you luck. if you have any other questions, just shoot me a private message!
Thanks for that;
I actually went ahead and used that method in the guide since upon further research, it seems that visonary was only causing issues when it was use for perm root; temp root, which is what that method uses visionary for seems to work fine.
So did that, reboot into the bootloader, confirmed that I had S-OFF on the first line.
Installed ROM manager from the market
Flashed Clockwork recovery
Booted into recovery and did a system backup to SD card
Rebooted and decided to download the Virtuous ROM from ROM manager
Told it to reboot into recovery and flash that image, wiping all data and settings
Got stuck on an bootup loop (HTC logo + start up sound -> black screen -> HTC logo + startup sound ad infinitum)
Rebooted into recovery, and did a restore from the backup (whew)
Phone seems to be working fine now
Now I'm trying to figure out what went wrong... any ideas?
K, I redownloaded virtuous from XDA, checked the MD5, and tried to flash it again.
Same problem, infinite loop on startup screen.
Do i need to flash the engineering hboot? I was under the impression that that wasn't necessary for using custom ROMs.
Still can't figure out what's wrong.
did you debrand? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835777
Have you tried flashing through CWM directly? I really don't like ROM Manager for flashing new ROMs and seems to oversimplify the process to allow green users to get on the flashing wagon.
I would boot into CWM (camera + power i think) and do a complete wipe + flash from in there. I have never had an issue with doing things directly from recovery and I have a Bell DZ as well. It's long since lost it's blue and white colours, but that was it's origin
Have fun!
Im new to this stuff here, and i DO want to learn about it as this stuff is very interesting to me! Technology is something i learn very quickly if im directed in the correct direction
The question i have here is about my Desire Z ( Bell Cannada ).
A few months ago we received a OTA update. So its currently running on Android 2.2.1 : Build - 1.84.666.2 CL322105, and its SUPER slow! Is it still possible to root this version?
I want to install the Gingerbread version on my phone, but i cant find instructions to root this OS version to be able to do so.
Or should i wait till the Official gingerbread Os to come out for our phones?
Ive been searching every where's for this info and everything i find is all back dated to last yr and nothing up-to-date after the OTA.
I hope this question is not TOO n00bish as i tried to search every where for it, and ether i could not find it or i did not enter the correct word search to get a result i needed.
Thanks in advance!
Andrew
Edit: NVM my question here.... i have finally found an update post within the wiki ( April 1 2011 )
Sorry for a useless post!
Thank you all for your efforts in posting in this forum! Very informative!

heh. that actually worked. Flashed directly from CWM recovery and it booted up with no issues.
Guess I know not to flash from ROM manager anymore
Thanks.

You do not need to debrand to flash custom ROMs to the Bell Canada Desire Z.

Interesting, I've flashed many ROMs from ROM Manager on my Bell Canada DZ, and never had an issue. That said, flashing from recovery is really not any harder, so if it works, it works.

Yeah, I assumed that flashing from ROM manager just meant that it rebooted to recovery and flashed it from there. I guess there is a difference.
Either way, been playing with Virtuous 1.0.2 for a few days now, really like this ROM, but I'm itching to try out something different now. Man, I can see this is going to develop into a time consuming hobby.
Plus, I'm going to need a bigger SD card to store all of these ROMs + backup =X
Oh, another noob question; I've come across a few zip files that included a system folder and an META-INF folder. How exactly do I install these?
G2 only works with at&t
alright here it is my t-mobile G2 won't connect to the t-mobile network at all, I've went through 3 SIM cards because this thing use to kill the SIM card from working on other t-mobile phones and it works perfectly fine on at&t network. so I've unlocked so it will work on at&t just to see if it would work. so i gave p and bought a MT 4G, but i still want to know if the G2 is fixable because I'm just about ready to throw in the towel this is what I've tried to resolve the problem called t-mobile they ended up saying just return the phone but i can't since i didn't buy it from them. Called them again got the unlock code. I've flashed the radio a few times. I've also just got the leaked 2.3.3 update and nothing has worked. It find t-mobile network but says your SIM card isn't allowed to connect to this network then after trying again it says unable to connect to network please try again later.
Just so frustrating i don't know what to do just about to say forget it. this thread is my last resort.
also i still have S-OFF
i used this method on my G2 just yesterday and put on CM7.0.3. the only issues i came across were because i restored everything (should have just done apps and app data) using Titanium, which put me in a boot loop. I'm dumb, so i did it twice before i figured out what was the problem. the thread has a comment about how Visionary is dangerous, but the OP responded that since it is only used to gain temp root, there should be no problems.
Hello all,
Introduction:
My name is Dev, and I have purchased a phone from Craigslist about a year ago. I used to use Windows Mobile phones. I had no problems with them. I have used the T-mobile MDA, Wing, and Touch Pro 2. They have been good phones for me, until recently. I have always wanted a faster phone and the Touch Pro 2 seemed to be quick enough for me. Nope. It slowed down just like the others. My brother is younger than me, and he has been attracted to the Android market since the T-mobile G1. I never got an opportunity to enter this operating system market. I am very tech savvy however, and it has merely been a case of me not wanting to "change." However, I am past that and I want to contribute to the Android community. My first Android phone is the T-mobile myTouch 3G Slide. (I like sliding phones in case you haven't noticed. I must have the physical keyboard. I text a lot.) I bought it used from Craigslist, and it seemed to work fine then. The previous owner was nice enough to clear all the data off of it, and give it to me fresh. I have been using it since.
Leading into my problem/question:
Lately, however, it has been slowing down too. I want to reset it to a clean slate. I know how to do it. It is in the menus. However, I do not like how this phone has been modified. Why would you modify a phone? I have never had to do this with my Windows phones. There has never been a need to flash any roms or anything. They had updates which were simple to use. Plug the USB into the computer and follow the simple steps. Make sure it doesn't shut off during flash. Simple. I've done this plenty of times with printers, motherboards, CD-ROMs, and all other flashable devices. I understand how big of a risk this is. If the flash doesn't complete (or is the wrong rom), then the device will not work again. Unless, you J-TAG the device and flash it again correctly. But, that requires a lot of work, and a wiring schematic to figure out where the J-TAG ports are. I have learned this information from back in the day when I used to do dish testing. You would flash roms to satellite TV boxes and experiment with new encryption technologies for satellite TV. That being said, I am terrified of flashing phones, because I would have no idea where to look for J-TAG ports for phones, if I mess something up. So, in conclusion, my experience in flashing has been for testing purposes only.
Problem/Question:
How do I figure out what the status of my phone is? It says Cyanogen Mod on start up. My brother tells me this is a very good rom. Who decided that though? Is it a bad idea to go back to stock T-mobile rom? I've always had this thought nagging me to try it and see why people go through all this headache of S-OFF and rooting phones. However, if I go back to the stock rom, will I be able to gain access to the phone's internal memory again? I don't like the idea of losing the S-OFF and rooting privileges the previous owner worked so hard to do. I would like to flash the latest T-mobile rom to the device, but how do I know if it will mess up everything and clash with some code leftover from the modified rom of Cyanogen Mod? Also, how do I backup all my stuff? I want to keep all my setting for the programs I have downloaded from the Google Market. I want to keep my contacts and notes. I want to keep my text messages and MMS messages. I am one of those idiots who keeps all his text messages and MMS messages archived. I go back through the messages from time to time for retrieval of important information I may have spoken about with someone in the past. I know this is a loaded post. I am sorry. If anyone is willing or able to help me, then please pick any point in this post and we'll go from there. This was just an outline of everything so you guys can help me find a starting point.
What I Know About the Phone:
T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide
Android 2.3.3
Baseband 47.63.35.21U_7.15.35.16
Kernel 2.6.32.17-cyanogenmod-g501281a [email protected] #1
CPU ARMv6-compatible process rev 5 (c6l)
Mod CyanogenMod-7.0.0-Slide
Build GRI40
I believe it is S-OFF and it is rooted. I would like a procedure to verify though. Please.
Memory Card:
Memory card has a lot of folders and stuff on it from which I have no idea. Some of it says nervous stuff like ".android_secure" "clockworkmod" "2111.zip" "signed_Froyo_Slide_Radio.zip" "gapps-gb-20110120-signed.zip" "update.zip" "update-cm-7.0.0-Slide-signed" and "Android" I like it when my memory card is clean with nothing but a few folders like "Pictures" "Videos" "Movies" "Data" "Programs" "Software" "Music" and other general stuff like that. I like this so I can use the memory card elsewhere and know where everything is. Basically, I want to know if I can delete everything without shooting myself in the foot. How do I find out what each .apk is for? Will a stock T-mobile rom come with all the stock backgrounds, contact pictures, and all the other stock goodies? I feel like some of those were on the SD card too.
Things I like:
Speed. I like things to be fast. Utilitarian. I don't want any fancy effects, typically. I like everything simple. For example, my desktops are all using the Classic Windows Theme, and all fade in / fade out have been disabled. I want my phone to be the same way. Nothing I don't need. Minimalistic. I don't like to keep many programs running at once. This was something I liked about the Windows phones. I could click in the upper right hand corner and it would present a list of running programs. I could close specific ones that I did not want to run in the background. Android doesn't seem to have a feature like this, but it does seem like they close if they are not being displayed on the screen.
WIFI
How do I fix the WIFI in this phone? It seems like the radio drivers are wrong are outdated. It keeps dropping the connection immediately after the phone connects to a wireless network. I noticed a thread, but I cannot post to it. I wanted to ask how I would apply this patch to my phone without having a rom or anything. I thought maybe I could boot the phone into the recovery mode, and install the radio drivers maybe? I don't know what I am doing though, and want some guidance.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1177650
And, why does the GPS take so long to get a fix?
Moderators/Thanks
I am very sorry to anyone and everyone whom I may offend in this post. If all my questions are answered somewhere else, please direct me to the correct area. I have been searching and researching for so long and I don't seem to be getting anywhere. I gave up about two months ago, and now I am back again trying to fix this phone. Please do not be mad at me for pestering you guys with annoying questions from new users like me. I know you guys are tired of answering these questions over and over again. Please. Just give me a little guidance. Thank you so much for any and all help. I really truly appreciate this. Android seems to be a very good operating system, and I am looking forward to all your posts.
P.S.
Sorry about the length of this post. It is my first time.

Well, for starters, welcome to the myTouch 3G Slide fora, second, yes, your brother is right, you are running the best ROM available at the moment, but your running an older version of itif you like, i can link you to an updated version of the ROM or i can point you to the "Android Development" section of the forum for the myTouch Slide and you can pick one your self, if you need any help with your device, feel free to PM me or reply to this thread at any time, seeing as how iI am one of the last people who actually still support this device for ROMs, i would reccomend my "TeamFreedom LeWaOS" ROM, but im still working out some kinks in it, for now, i will give you the opportunity to update to the latest version of "CyanogenMOD 7.2":
Download the ROM (has fix for WiFi i believe): http://download.cyanogenmod.com/get/RC/update-cm-7.2.0-RC2-espresso-signed.zip
Download for the latest 2.3.3 GAPPS: http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip
Also, here is how to FLASH these ROMs:
Pre-requsite: PLACE "update-cm-7.2.0-RC2-espresso-signed.zip" and "gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip" on the root of your sdcard
1: Hold the power button on your phone
2: Tap "Reboot"
3: Tap "Recovery"
4: when in "Recovery" use the Volume +/- keys to move and the trackpad to select "Wipe data/factory reset" then select "yes" if necessary
4a: select "Install zip from sdcard"
5: then select "choose zip from sdcard"
6: select "update-cm-7.2.0-RC2-espresso-signed.zip"
7: When finished select "reboot system now"
8: again, reboot into recovery
9: flash "gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip"
10: reboot system, and enjoy your updated phone, this process overall is the same for all android phones, and for all ROMs
Thank You
Thanks. I will try the new CyanogenMod rom.
Dealing with the performance of your phone, how many SMS/MMS msgs do you have currently? I noticed you said you dont like deleting them. Thing is, if you have a lot of msgs it can significantly impact your phones performance. Obviously it impacts the messaging app but in my experience it can affect the whole system. This may not be the case on CM ROMS but i have noticed it on stock. (i dont use CM much, prefer Sense).
Also u can try overclocking. I like NoFrills app from market. Its free and allows u to select your i/o scheduler and governor.
For backups, hands down Titanium Backup is the best if u ask me (and many others).
Hope this helps a little.

Update on CM7
Hey, guys.
So, I've updated to CM 7.2.0. Since then, I've been having problems with the touch screen and the phone app. If I use the directional pad, I can highlight the phone app, but when I click on it, it crashes. Also, the touch screen is unresponsive all the time. Sometimes, I will get lucky and when I reboot it, I will get access to the touch screen again. I am wondering if maybe I didn't update the drivers for the touch screen or the phone radio or something. I have a hunch that the phone app is crashing and lagging the whole system, so the touch screen isn't working because of that. When the touch screen does work, the phone app is also working. I am thinking of just flashing the phone with HTC's stock rom and then rooting and s-off it all over again, because I think the previous owner didn't do something right. I want to know if I can just flash the stock rom without any consequences. And, also will I be able to get it rooted and s-offed again? I'm hoping that by flashing the stock rom, I can test my touch screen and phone app with confidence. Maybe the phone app is sending commands for a newer firmware revision, and mine isn't updated to that version yet. Not sure how this works really. Anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Suggestion. Re-flash the rom, but in recovery go into advanced, wipe dalvik cache. Hit back, now in mounts and storage. Wipe the following, boot, system, hit back wipe/factory reset, wipe cache. Flash rom, then gapps. Reboot. You should be good to go. Hope this helps.

Ran into a wall
Alright, guys.
So, I ran into a wall. It is now completely unresponsive to the touch screen. I had recently flashed it, and I am trying to do what you had suggested, Dvarl. The problem is that I cannot touch the android logo so I can continue onto the Rom Manager where I can flash and reboot into recovery. If I try to go into the recovery by holding the down arrow and power button, then clicking on "Recovery," I get the red triangle logo. It has always been this way. Lastly, my phone is not s-offed. Thanks for helping me out with that. lol Any ideas on how to flash without the Rom Manager recovery flash?
Edit: I think I have found the problem. I think my digitizer is going out. I am going to maybe purchase a new one and see if it fixes the touching problem. I'll keep you guys posted. Thanks for all your help thus far!
I was able to snag this elusive Boost Mobile branded G2 today at a Boost store. The phone comes with 4.4.2 and build number is ZVE with model number being LS980 just like Sprint. I'm not even sure if I was supposed to be able to do any of this or not because there's no no forums or information of any kind really anywhere on the Internet. This phone is a ghost, not even in Boost site lol. but I successfully rooted with stump root using brute force (?). Root checker shows rooted and I got twrp installed with autorec. Now what I'm wondering is if anybody here has any info on if and what roms may work with the Boost G2? I'm gonna stick stock until information becomes clearer.
You need to upgrade your recovery, Autorec only gets you half way there. It installs TWRP 2.7.0.0, the latest is 2.8.3.0. Oh, and I managed to snag one from boost last week, and your right, any web search resulted in nothing being found, not even on boost website. Not all boost stores even have the phone. So consider yourself lucky. Most sprint roms should work. Go here for latest TWRP, and flash through recovery and wipe cache/dalvik when done. I lost tap to wake, I'm going to hidden menu and test phone to see if I get the fuction back. 5689#*980#

Threw a little reading I noticed I needed to upgrade TWRP. So I did that. Just really hesitant to flash a rom yet because I'm on ZVE which it doesn't seem a lot of roms are compatible with without flashing specific radios. I lost knock on to..
If I remember right boost is owned or subsidized by sprint. So any sprint ROM should work. Zve upgrade didn't do much but I believe add HD voice on calling. Maybe something else. Zvd had knock code. Which was kernel based. Zvc was definite radio.
Auto-rec applies a kernel that works but doesn't support knock on. Use simple kernel or dorimax. Cloudyfa kernel from his ROM works also

I tried to install the latest CM nightly but it never started and I got a bootloop. The version of TWRP I installed is actually 2.8.3.1 and instead of flashing the zip I just extracted the img file and used one of those img flasher apps in the play store. This have anything to do with the bootloop of CM? Also without stepping on toes can anybody suggest a good rom? The G3 one sounded interesting but I can't seem to find it.
I downloaded DorimanX's app that automatically downloads the right kernal, before I started flashing anything, also Flashify to backup my stock recovery and boot.img. I used DorimanX and it restored tap-to-wake. I just used the unbrick application to set my phone back to stock, and I'm keeping it rooted on stock until Lollipop update, and when I do finally flash a custom recovery it will be Philz. I don't think I will be flashing any custom roms, but I will be tasting Cyanogen when a stable build is out, that's without question. I read somewhere that you need to flash a radio for that build to get it to boot, but don't quote me on that. You need to find out if it's ZV7,8 ZVA,C,D,E and flash the radio for whatever build your flashing. A freakin headache. Enjoy New Years, and happy flashing.
All AOSP and cm builds require you to be on zv8 boot loader and radio. If you rooted and take the ota, you will brick.
Auto-rec will drop your boot loader and install twrp. Update twrp. Install radio. Found in g2 general or sprint g2 general.
As for the g3 rom, that will be in g2 android development.

Yeah ive tried a nighlty and snapshot release of CM. Just got that bootloop. Tried the G3 rom and it was great except couldn't get data to work even with the fix posted in that thread. Affliction had a ton of force closes. Im on stock for now with some xposed. Good enough i guess.
EDIT : I was bored and did the whole flashing the ZV8 modem thing and got CM11 and Pacman to boot but data wont work for the life of it. It Shows the correct signal bars but never actually turns on no matter how much i tinker with mobile settings or apns. Same with ZV7 radio. This phone is tough. Sucks because every thing else seems to work great including video recording which i thought i seen didnt work on CM for this phone. It seems my radios are a little wonky even on stock ZVE though too. Sometimes data will turn completely off and then reconnect a little while later for no reason. It doesn't seem to transition from 3G to LTE smoothly. Odd because $50 phones on Boost do that smoothly lol.
So do you flash the modem first or the rom

Thank you! worked Perfectly! Now The big question is what roms are out there for the G2 (boost Variant )
I joined this forum just so I could chime in on this. I never posted on here because I just take my time and read as much information that I can find before I open my mouth. I hope we draw the attention of some Devs for this version of the G2. I been modding phones, tablets, pc's and mp3 players since the prevail days. My experience with this phone been kinda hair pulling. I already knew that a lot of the mods for the sprint version would work for the boost so i took the plunge. Like yall, I could find nothing of use on the net. I rooted, installed custom recovery, debloated and tried a few mods thru trial and error. My main problem was that I couldnt receive calls. I read in another post where a guy had to put his mobile network settings on cdma to receive calls. To my amazement and fustration thats the only way I can receive calls. Outgoing calls and messages always worked fine. I called boost and went thru the process of resetting and all the other crap they inform you to do(that most of us already know and do) and I forgot to back-up all the system apks I deleted. No big deal but I just cant change my lockscreen wallpaper for some reason. My plug and pop app fc now(from deleting lg setup wizard). I havent tried any roms because i just dont see any thats stable enough for my needs(dd). I havent turned it into a $300 paper weight so i wont complain. It still works. I want to downgrade it and start from scratch but Im unsure if that method works for our boost version. Love the phone(even though I was pissed when I got home and realized it didnt have a sd card slot). Any help would be greatly appreciated and rewarded. Hopefully we receive some support fellas. Im not giving up.
Hope this helps
Go here for the tools, and you can find the tot files they're all over the web. I've bricked a bunch of times, this tool has saved me a lot of headache. Im on Boost also, and any rom should work, it just has to be for LS980. Let me know how things go, maybe I could recommend some roms. Oh, and get your hands on the ZV8 modem aka radio, most of the roms use jelly bean base, so you'll need to flash that with the roms, in TWRP, add another zip.

This may be a bit off topic but I'm on a sprint CM12 rom and found a way to switch to lte with the least glitches. go into the settings and switch to "CDMA/EvDo auto" and once 3g pops up switch to global and immediately reboot. this works about 90% to switch to lte.
CM11/CM12 Network Config to Boost
After using lg flash tools to downgrade to zv8, I was able to root using ioroot and get cwm using freegee (using twrp on zv8 gave me 2.7.0.0 then after flashing the 2.8.5.0 update, it wouldn't get past loading screen). Now with zv8, root, and cwm, I was able to flash cm12 latest nightly and worked great (same with cm11 latest snapshot), much smoother than kitkat; but of course the problem was data wasn't working. This is because the phone doesn't get configured to boost mobile network settings as it does when activating the phone out of the box. I tried copying boostzone from stock into cm12 system to see if it would help config the network as it does on stock, but instead it converts itself to sprintzone and nothing improves. Someone posted a thread in cyanogenmod forum asking if anyone knows how to configure the apn settings after flashing cm. So my guess is our best bet is to figure out how to configure these network settings, maybe having something to do with msl codes and etc, kinda like how people are able to flash the sprint lg g3 onto boost mobile and get 3g. I will try to attempt something these days after studying this more, but if anyone else has any suggestions, please help us boost mobile users out, lol.

Exciting news, after a few days of studying, here it is:

Well I can say for anyone on the boost mobile version of the g2 the APN zip worked for me. I have late and MMS working with stock messenger. I'm on the latest nightly 3/19 if that Helps
Is there a way to make the Sprint G2 work with Boost? I'd rather not have to pay full price for the Boost version when the Sprint version is so much cheaper, or paying someone $50 on eBay to make it work, and only being at 3G?
I am a current Boost customer if that helps.

I bought a new Sprint LG G2 at BestBuy for $199.99 + tax and activated it on Boost in place of a Galaxy S III. It works as expected. I'm still stock and not rooted. The phone came with ZDC out of the box and updated a couple of times to ZVE.
So i bought a FreedomPop LG G3 on sale and i ended up activating it to FreedomPop and i rooted it, and im wondering if i can install Marshmallow or cygn on it, my concern is.. before i bought the LG G3 i had a first Gen MOTO G from TextNow with there own unique ROM and when i installed lollipop on it, since the phone has no sim card the phone lost connection to TextNow and was basically useless outside the house so i had to ask TextNow to send me their unique Rom which they did and after installing it everything came back to normal.
now my lg g3 has a sim card slot, and came with sprint apps on it and showing sprint on lockscreen and everything. calls can be made from the android call app but texts messages are only available through FreedomPop text app.
i asked FreedomPop to unlock my phone and they said no problem doing it for me but i ended up not doing it since i do want to stay with them but then i want a different ROM.
so my questions are:
1.is there a way to backup an stock rom that came with the device so i can restore it just like i did on my TextNow incase i lose connection like before?
2.is there a way to backup FreedomPop like apps and restore it after changing the rom? will they work after installing them?
3.should i install a different rom?
4.anyone had an experience with such "locked" phones or even FreedomPop phone and can tell me how did it work for him?

If it has sprint apps it is probably an ls990; check in "about phone" settings to make sure. So basically follow the ls990 thread(s) to see how to get recovery on it... http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-lg-g3 . Since you have root already installing a recovery should be a simple process via flashify or autorec apps - but you need to absolutely make sure you install the correct recovery file with the bump exploit or you may softbrick and have to restore with a PC. (bump is an lg g3 exploit needed for our device as we don't have a true bootloader unlock)
Re #1: if/when you put TWRP recovery on your phone you can make a backup of your freedompop stock ROM so you can restore it if you need to.
Re #2: since you're rooted you can backup all of your apps and their data with titanium or something similar. I use titanium pro because it allows you to make a zip file you can flash in TWRP while flashing your ROM, gapps, etc. & it restores your app data too; super convenient time saver. As far as will the freedompop apps work on a different ROM - they should; trying to restore them and see if they work might be the best way to go there. As long as you have a ROM backup you can restore - why not give em a try?
Re #3: that's subjective and up to you. Some people prefer stock features(especially the camera) and some xposed mods to get some extra tweaks, some people prefer custom ROMs with tons of features and the newest Android version. Again, that's on you to decide. BTW, if you do go custom ROM there are decent camera ports available that come close to stock quality.
Re #4: I have not, but I'm guessing you may need to take note of your APN settings before you change ROMs as they may be unique to freedompop & could mess up your data/text if they are not set right. That seems to be the biggest issue with people using different carriers.
Good luck & hope you enjoy your G3
LS990ZVC
Hey and thanks for your reply, yes my phone is the ls990ZVC (by the way on phone settings under brand it says "sprint" and not FreedomPop)
Q1.what do you mean by get recovery? you mean a costume recovery program on the devices main boot in-case of a problem that will replace the original recovering stock program?
Q#1. the thread you posted is for unlocking the phone? what benefits do i get from it? will i lose the 4G LTE speed like it says on the thread if i do it?
Q#2.i dont care much about camera features and also not looking for a lot of tweaks all i look for is to keep my ram and cpu power low and there for available at all time so basically having the phone act and react as fast as possible. can i achieve that with one of the different roms or having stock marshmallow installed?
Q#3. where do i get my APN settings?
Q#4. I think i know the answer to this but ill ask anyway, having TWRP recovery can save my device from softbrick right?

Hey...sorry I missed the notification that you responded...my bad.
Recovery - TWRP recovery which allows you to backup your current ROM, wipe your device, and install ROMs. You have to have it installed if you want to run any custom ROMs. It is imperative that you use the correct file or you may bork all your software, softbrick, and re-flash on a PC. If you are unsure on how to install TWRP then read, read & ask questions in the appropriate forums - & watch youtube videos if you need guidance on how to install it.
The link I posted was for your device. You can search in the threads for anything from ROMs, TWRP, root, kernels, and troubleshooting if you get stuck.
Stock marshmallow is pretty quick & there are some pure AOSP or basic CM builds available that may suit your needs...just have to sample for yourself to see what's best.
APN settings: settings, cellular networks, access point names; if you see a feedompop apn(or anything that isn't sprint) write down the fields, or take a screenshot and email it to yourself for reference.
Having TWRP recovery saves you from your mistakes. Once you get it installed you can make backups that you can always restore if you experiment with new ROMs or tweaks, etc. It is the backbone of flashing and modifying your phone.
Again, sorry for leaving you hanging. I'll pay closer attention to my notifications in the future

So i went with liquid smooth rom and after having some issues with titanium backup restoring apps i tried a few things and ended up having all system apps crashing on boot (dialer etc...) so i restored back to stock rom and everything works fine but now when i wanted to go back to liquid smooth TWRP says i cant and that the install files might be incomplete, actually it says that way about gapps too.. why is that? also having the problems i just mentioned with the rom, does that mean the rom is not stable.. or it is something i did? should i even try going back to that rom? i mean i kind of liked it in the 2 hours i got to test it before everything crashed. i went throught the link you sent me and eventually figured out that there is a rom section on top of the page where i can actually see the roms which i didnt realize that before, seems like restoring function on TWRP works great but i wish there was a way to just know which rom would work best for my phone in terms of performance which is what im looking for.

ended up having all system apps crashing on boot
My guess is maybe you included system apps in your titanium backup? They are the ones listed in red; you don't want to include any system apps in your app restore/update.zip because they may be incompatible with the ROM you are flashing. So unless you read in the liquid smooth thread of other users having issues, I would doubt the ROM itself caused things to crash.
As far as the TWRP error about incomplete files...I'm not quite sure what that means. But you can take a screenshot while in TWRP(vol down + power) and post it up here to better explain the issue.
If you want to try liquid again try a fresh download of the ROM and fresh download of gapps(make sure you're downloading the correct gapps - LP & MM use different ones). If you run into problems with crashes again, try and flash just the ROM by itself to help determine if the errors are caused by the ROM or the gapps you're using.
I like liquid smooth...used to use it on my galaxy nexus back in the day. There are lots of good ones out there, itjust depends what you like. I usually use Tesla(aosp), but aokp and turbo are both really nice too. If you prefer CM based ROMs there are a ton of them too. Pick your poison.
So to clarify: it sounds like you did everything right - except don't restore system apps with titanium, make sure your gapps are compatible with your ROM, and have fun flashing
