[Q] Having trouble flashing new recovery - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Really hope that I am in the right section.
I have been running the blisspop rom for a little while now. Wanted to give a new rom a shot. Went into recovery and wiped as usual and went to flash and got a "this package supports bootloader....." Realized that the new rom recommenced TWRP or Clockwork. So I went into fastboot and tried flashing both Clockwork and TWRP and after flashing and rebooting it hangs on the boot screen with "entering recovery" at the top.
Suggestions? Help?

Are you flashing the right recovery that's made specifically for your device?

Here download this one: Click Here
Boot your phone into bootloader,
Choose Fastboot and hook it up to the computer
Wait until it says Fastboot-USB
Open CMD in the window where you downloaded the file and copy this without the quotation marks: "fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.8.3.0-m8.img"
Wait until it finishes, then just try going back into recovery

Yep same thing...just hangs on the white HTC boot screen with Entering Recovery at the top. The weird thing is even though it hangs there I still get a message on my computer that says the phone is connected through USB

hmm.. Odd. Have you ever tried RUU back to stock and retrying all over again?

Try this:
fastboot erase cache
Then flash again twrp recovery
Fastboot flash recovery twrp_recovery_name.img
Send with my M8 from Tuttoandroid

That didn't work either. Has anyone else tried to go from the philz recovery back to the other ones and had any issues?

Still trying to figure this out...maybe someone else has a suggestion. I can't RUU since I don't have S-Off, but there should't be an issue flashing a new recovery, I've never had this issue before.

Okay. Let's start over from the beginning.
Go here and download this. on your PC.
rename it to "recovery.img" (no quotes) and put it into your fastboot folder on your PC. (either fastboot or platform-tools depending on the ADB version you have)
Hook up to ADB/fastboot and enter the command fastboot flash recovery recovery.img.
The img you are trying to flash has to be in your fastboot folder.
Also, make sure you have the proper drivers installed. You can confirm this by going to Device Manager on you PC (enter device manager into the search box in your start menu. If you see a yellow exclamation point over "My HTC" or "Android" you don't have the proper drivers).
If you get the yellow "!", and don't have the drivers, then you can get them by clicking this link.
Also, make sure that HTC Sync Manager is uninstalled from your computer. It does not play nice with ADB.

I appreciate the detailed instructions, and I went through and did it exactly like you suggested and I ended up with the same issue. I am able to flash the recovery, the issue is afterwards when I reboot the bootloader then try to go into the recovery it freezes on the htc logo screen with "entering recovery" at the top of the screen. I have been able to flash roms and everything with no issue, just for some reason I can't switch recoveries.

[Q] Incredible boot loops at white screen, tried many things

I have an Incredible that has Cyanogenmod 7 on it. A couple weeks ago it stopped working in that it would just reboot after the white HTC incredible screen. I can get it to go to Hboot, but if I try to go into Recovery it just reboots immediately.
I flashed a new Hboot successfully, but once it reboots I get stuck in the loop again.
Both Clear Storage and Factory Reset start the boot loop as well.
Anyone have an idea of what I can do or does this sound like a hardware issue? My computer recognizes it, but I'm not sure what good that does me since I can't get it to boot or go into Recovery.
Here's the info from Hboot in case it's helps

I would flash an ruu thru hboot and then do a factory rest from hboot. Then if it boots fine flash cwm recovery thru hboot and then the su binaty thru recovery to regain root. Once you have recovery working again then flash back to cm7 or another rom of your choice thru recovery.
Or you could try to just reflash cwm recovery thru hboot, and then if you can access recovery wipe everything in mounts and storage except sdcard and emmc, and then restore a nandroid or flash a new rom.

I flashed the PB31IMG from here (wasn't the newest): http://pvillecomp.com/?page_id=22
The flash seemed to work, but once it rebooted it went into the loop again. All the options in Hboot just throw it into the same white-screen loop, including Factory Reset and Recovery.
The only thing I see different in Hboot is my radio is now 2.15.10.07.07

Try flashing the recovery and then see if you can access it.
If you have adb setup and have fastboot, you can try to erase the recovery partition by typing " fastboot erase recovery " without quotes into a cmd prompt on your pc. And then flash the recovery from above. Sounds like something is either messed up with your boot or recovery partition or img.
You can also try to use fastboot to erase the boot partition " fastboot erase boot " and then try an ruu again.
I tried both Clockwork 5 and Stock HTC from here: http://pvillecomp.com/?page_id=28
They both boot-looped after flashing.
When I try to go into Recovery now, I get the white screen then a quick flash of a phone image with a red triangle on top.

That red triangle is the stock recovery, try to do a factory reset now or try the sugestions i added to the post above.
Factory reset doesn't work. It shows me a phone with a green circle then goes into the boot loop.
I'll try the ADB stuff later today when I'm back from work. I've never used it before. Thanks so much for helping.
How do I connect to the phone via ADB when it's in Hboot? I just get "error: device not found" Every tutorial I found requires the phone to be booted to use ADB.

Adb will not work in hboot but fastboot will. You can use adb in recovery though, not just booted to the os. The error device not found is probably because you were trying adb from hboot, or because you dont have the correct drivers on your pc. Adb and fastboot are 2 different programs, fastboot is not an adb command. If you need the fastboot.exe file or the drivers you can get them here. http://dinc.does-it.net/ADB/ADB-Fastboot-USB-Drivers_v4_(x86)(x64).zip
I ran "fastboot erase boot" and it said "erasing 'boot'...FAILED (remote: not allowed)". Can I try running or flashing something else?
If I run "fastboot devices" it shows my device ID with fastboot next to it so I know it's connecting.
Thanks for putting up with this, can't imagine what caused this.
Hmm not sure, seems it may be some sort of hardware issue or disk failure. If you cant get it to boot after an ruu, and you cant factory reset or access a custom recovery or get fastboot to erase or flash, im not sure what else you could do. My only other sugestion would be to try the ruu.exe that you do from your pc with the phone connected. Flash the stock recovery PB31IMG.zip first before doing so as i believe its required for the ruu.exe. It may work and it may not im not exactly sure how the ruu.exe works as i have never used one, but i believe you just boot into hboot and then run the exe on your pc.
I haven't flashed through Fastboot because I don't know how. I tried flashing a few of the stock images, but I get errors everytime like "whoops: didn't find expected signature" or "archive does not contain android-info.txt".
Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Take a PB31IMG.zip ruu ( http://pvillecomp.com/?page_id=22 ) and rename it update.zip
Put the update.zip file on your pc in the same folder as the fastboot.exe file. (Where adb is installed)
Boot into hboot with the phone pluged in to the pc. Make sure it says fastboot in red at the top of the hboot screen.
Open a cmd prompt to the directory where fastboot.exe is (eg C:\ADB\)
Type without quotes " fastboot update update.zip " and hit enter.
Here is some good info on fastboot.
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Fastboot
Should I be able to open the zip on my computer? All the ones I download from that site are invalid according to Windows. This is the one I tried (3rd link on that page): http://pvillecomp.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/Images/Gingerbread-Stock_PB31IMG.zip
I did exactly what you said and got a similar result to before.

Use 7-zip, winzip and winrar dont work the best for android files.
Think I'm just going to give up on this one since the flashing doesn't work...what a hassle. I wish there was some diagnostics tool that would just tell me if the phone is physically broken.

help with twrp

I just got my htc one last night,I have s off and it says it unlocked.my problem is when i go command prompt to install open recovery it shows that it wrote twrp then i click recovery it shows its booting into recovery but then it just restarts to the splash screen,Ive tried many times to get into recovery and just brings me back to htc screen phone boots fine.Ive tried to use goo manger to get into recovery which also shows entering recovery mode then it just starts up normal. So im not sure what the heck is going on.So info would be greatly apprecitaded.or should i use philz recovery does one work better then the other.I am also running 4.2.2 not sure if that matters or not
I'm also having this problem. I'm running android 4.3. I've tried TWRP and Clockwork Mod. I achieved S-Off and an unlocked bootloader with firewater.

Use Clock Work Mod. TWRP has been having issues with so many devices.
Did you do " fastboot erase cache " before flashing the recovery. I have used twrp since day one with out any issues. I hate cwm because of the super slow backups. Twrp finishes in 1/4 the time. Also twrp looks much better.

i havent tried that will give it a shot .I deleted sdk and trying to reinstall it but for some reason its not loading the page to dl it.So if anyone has a file for that would be cool, where is the fastboot erase cache at im not seeing it any were.back in the day when i had the thunderbolt I never had this much problems
fastboot erase cache is a command you enter in fastboot mode. Just like when you flash the recovery with fastboot flash recovery name_of_recovery_file.img
You dont need the whole sdk. I assume the drivers are still installed? All you need is this https://www.dropbox.com/s/ipa8tsjdmcacxul/miniadb.zip. Just extract the files to a folder named adb. Then put your recovery .img file in the adb folder too. Then open your cmd prompt to that folder and do the commands.

Did you use the VZW version of TWRP from here? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2416431
No issues like mentioned before. I've heard philz works well but haven't tried it. You can even use an app called flashify to flash either. Fastboot is better and less risky, but I've used flashify and it works.

so i still have know idea what is going on with this.I dl the miniadb from drop box [thanks for that by the way] extracted to new folder called adb dropped and dragged file openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-m7 to the adb folder, held down shift and got into cmd typed in fastboot erase cache and hit enter it shows that it wrote it ,then I typed fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-m7 add the .img to the end hit enter and says every thing went ok.so I unplug cable hit power button went into recovery hit power button again.it shows that it is going into recovery then just goes to splash screen and boots normal.I have usb debug checked,S is off and says unlocked. So im stumped hopefully you will see what im doing wrong with my procedure..thanks again for the info you have have given me so far.
are their suppous to be spaces between fastboot flash recovery
That is the wrong recovery for this phone. Use this one http://flyhalf205.com/getdownload.php?file=recoveries/openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.4-m7vzw.img from the post above by brholt6. Also make sure you do the fastboot erase cache command before flashing the recovery. And yes there should be spaces.

fastboot erase cache
Then
Code:
fastboot flash recovery name_of_recovery.img

Dude you rock!!!! I know when i was using my s4 that the twrp worked best for that phone.Cant belive thats all it was.so just to make sure,I need to flash su then I should do backup of stock image just in case something goes wrong. So my next questions is do i nedd to do anything elese to flash kitkat rom on phone like flash differnt radio or anything?again thank you for your time and all the info you have provided.
Yes, flash su and then do a backup. If you use a kk rom you should flash kk 3.11.605.1 firmware.
perfect got it goin think its starting to come back to me doing the htc...lets hope

[Q] i may have semi bricked my phone please help

hello android geniuses first of sorry about this once my phone is working again i will not mess with it anymore
okay so i was feeling cool and rooted my htc one m7 from verizon then i turned s-off and unlocked bootloader
then i flashed a custom rom it was paranoid android everything worked except i wasnt getting any service on the phone so i was told to flash a verizon htc one rom so i went and flashed viper 6.2 but the phone got stuck in a bootloop so for some reason i thought that doing a factory reset/wipe from the recovery would fix it....it didnt and now i cant reflash the rom either....i tried to sideload but adb wont recognize my device while fastboot recognizes the phone adb wont
what am i to do?
Well im not sure of any other methods to try but i had loads of problems myself pushing files to the SDcard threw twrp and cwm recoveries, so the way I went about it was doing a decrypted RUU to return the phone to stock then once it loaded up in Android I pushed the Rom to the SDcard card then rebooted and started over.
Goto this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=46506621&postcount=2
All the way at the bottom you should see some links for RUU's, I used the one labeled "1.10.605.15 Decrypted RUU" You will flash this the same way as you would a firmware update, if you dont know how thats done that post will explain it all. After you flash the RUU reboot and it should be back to the day you got it, but you will still be s-off, at that point just put a custom recovery back on and flash away, however that RUU will downgrade your firmware so you might wanna update your firmware after you get the phone booted up and your rom placed back on the sdcard

What he said. Good post dude.
When you enabled adb sideload, what command did you use? Because you don't push files that way. You type "adb sideload Rom.zip", then it will send the file and after it sends immediately start the install. So you will need to wipe in recovery first to make sure it's clean.
Sent from my Lunar Ecliptic One.
i followed your steps i got to the part where fastboot asks to flush the zip again i typed "fastboot flash zip firmware.zip" and it said waiting for device and that never went away so i rebooted into bootloader and now fastboot wont recognize the device however if i go to device manager it says my htc is plugged but has a little yellow icon...the drivers are up to date this is driving me nuts i just want my phone to work
Ruu
sound like you may need to ruu back to total stock there are instruction on doing it here and I do not want to give you the wrong steps. found this but make sure you have the decrypted ruu
1. Download VZW RUU.zip from the following thread 1. Download VZW RUU.zip from the following thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2428276)
2. Rename to "ruu.zip"
3. Enter fastboot mode
4. enter "fastboot oem rebootRUU" - You should not see a silver HTC logo on your device.
5. enter "fastboot flash zip ruu.zip" - The first time you execute this command, it only prepares the flash
6. As soon as the flash is done preparing, enter the same exact command again "fastboot flash zip ruu.zip"
7. Now you'll see a little green progress bar on your phone. This does not need to reach 100%. As soon as your command window is finished, you can just "fastboot reboot".
8. You should be set back to fully stock HTC One.

I also use cut and paste when doing this as it stops my crappy spelling from getting in the way

You could always use a USB-OTG, place a rom on a flash drive and try to install that way. There may be a simpler way, but that's all i can think of for now.
i guess i have to order an otg cable....oh well...ill have to live without a phone a bit longer until cable shows up haha XD w

I don't know if this will help, but I had an issue of my devices not being found so I followed this guy's guide: http://zacktutorials.blogspot.com/2013/04/adb-is-not-recognized-as-internal-or.html
and was able to get my device recognized. Also which recovery are you using? I don't know if it's still an issue but when I was on viper I got stuck in a bootloop with TWRP so I switched to Philz.
If you're able to get into fastboot, follow post #4 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2677015 and basically start from the beginning.
Make sure you have the latest recovery, the latest firmware (radios and such), and the correct ROM..
good luck

sound like you may need to ruu back to total stock there are instruction on doing it here and I do not want to give you the wrong steps. found this but make sure you have the decrypted ruu

Hi All,
Do you know is RUU 4.4 has surfaced? please help

I think I may have ruined my phone

Hey there
I want to start off by saying I have very little experience with rooting, but am very familiar with jailbreaking apple devices so I figured i could manage.
I have a htc one m8 on rogers network locked. I rooted it and had super user and all that jazz, then flashed AOKP. Then I thought i actually liked the stock HTC sense better, so I tried to "get things back to normal"...lol.
Now im at the point where if i turn my phone on it goes straight to the fastboot screen(?) with all the "fast boot, recovery, factory reset, etc". Since I'm super new to all of this is there anybody that can write some instructions on how to get my phone back to stock? I would really appreciate it after panicking over this for 3 days.
Edit: In the fastboot screen at the top it says ***Tampered*** ***Relocked*** ***security warning**
also when i try to press recovery it shows the htc screen for 1 second then back to the same menu
i found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2710735 but i cannot even get into recovery

While being an expert with rooting and flashing custom recoveries on Samsung devices, I am also new to the world of HTC. Out of curiosity, what happens when you hit factory reset?
Unlock the boot loader again then install twrp recovery then head over to the stock backup thread and flash one of the nandroids for your cid.

Do fastboot devices ... adb commands itself won't work in bootloader, it has to be fastboot commands.
now you have a locked bootloader which means you cant do anything.. so your first step is to unlock it again then flash a custom recovery (TWRP) after that flash the stock rom+ boot.img ( to be safe) make sure it boots. RELOCK the bootloader then flash your firmware.zip.. hope it helps

If it's in bootloader it should show in command prompt when you type fastboot devices after connecting it to PC. If it doesn't then there is a driver problem perhaps. Check to make sure you have HTC drivers installed, or reinstall them. Might as well make sure adb is up to date as well, can do that through the Android SDK Manager. Another possibility might be that the usb cable isn't working correctly, try another cable. Fact of the matter though is, if it's in bootloader and you connect it to the PC adb/fastboot SHOULD pick it up.
So check and fix those things. Also make sure you use the correct commands, in bootloader mode, it'll be fastboot commands, not "adb devices" but "fastboot devices" ... "fastboot reboot" etc etc. Also make sure you're running the commands from within the adb/fastboot folder path(just for in case yeah...)

You didn't read any of my posts about that, did you? lol
I already stated adb commands like "adb devices" "adb reboot" etc will NOT work in bootloader, it'll work in the system and yes, it'll work in recovery for sideloading etc, but NOT in bootloader. For bootloader you HAVE to use fastboot commands, "fastboot devices" "fastboot reboot" "fastboot oem lock" "fastboot oem get_identifier_token" "fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin" etc etc

So I need to put the rom on my internal storage then go into recovery and install the zip using TWRP..but when I plug my phone into the computer the internal storage wont show up.
I do have sync manager installed also, and it wont show up in that either

With that adb devices command again in bootloader? Did you flash TWRP yet? If so, Got to Advanced >>> ADB Sideload >>> Swipe to start sideload.
Place the ROM.zip file in your adb folder then:
Connect phone to PC, while still in recovery mode type adb devices to make sure your device gets picked up, should show you the serial number for device AS WELL as "sideload" next to it, if so then you are hooked up right. Next type adb sideload name_of_zip.zip wait until fully finished.
If sideload fails for one or other reason you can also try to push it. Reboot to recovery again, type adb devices to make sure device gets picked up, type adb push name_of_zip.zip /data/media/0/ or adb push name_of_zip.zip /sdcard/ flash as per usual then.
Yet somehow I don't think you even need to go to these steps

I made a small mistake with the sideload though, it actually installs automatically as such you don't have to go back into recovery to flash, as it did it already, sorry. Edited post to fix.
Well as long as you can get into phone now to copy the nandroid backup to the phone all should be in order, can flash back stock from the nandroid then.
Glad it worked out then.:good:

Hello BerndM14, thank you for this baby steps. Mine m8 is a gpe version, it's 4.4.2 google rom, rooted, cwm recovery, s-on. I was trying to flash the full google 4.4.3 zip rom under recovery, however, after that, my m8 automaticlly enter recovery everytime reboot. And I can manually enter the bootloader, my pc can find the m8 both in recovery and bootloader. I searched this post, and do it accordingly, I download the gpe stock backup KOT49H.H16 - 1.16.1700.16 - CWM Philz touch and use adb sideload gpe3.zip to the cell phone sucessfully, then the recovery automaticlly starts installing rom, then, I got below message:
-- Erasing & formatting /system as ext4 (Unmounted system)
system partition formatted!
-- Mounting system partition for writing
Writing rom system to system partition
Rom system written successfully!
@symlinking and permissions
--Creating toolbox symlinks
--creating additional symlinks
Symlinks Set!
--installing busybox
Set_perm: some changes failed
E:Error in /tmp/update.zip
(status 7)
installation aborted.
Install from sideload complete.
then, I reboot it manually. problem still there, still enter the recovery automaticlly.
do you have any comments on this? please.
thanks,

Soft bricked OPO3, Fastboot with no recovery

Hi guys,
Rooted Oneplus 3 is soft bricked. Please help me!!! :crying:
:crying:Quick desription: Fastboot formatted it. My PC detects it.
Tried to Fastboot flash latest TWRP ("twrp-3.0.2-0-oneplus3.img") via CMD Prompt.
After that I get a message saying that the processed was "finished" (within 0.802s!).
Now I reboot+volume down and bootloop continues. Phone starts, I see the normal warnings I used to get after rooting it. Then I see the Oneplus logo for a fraction of a second and then it boots again and the process repeats itself.
I think it may be worth mentioning that the reason all this happened is an encryption problem that occurred while I was flashing a rom update with TWRP: After the flashing finished, got an error saying "unable to mount storage". Wiped cache+dalvik and then restarted. Got a black screen that did not display any signs of life after several minutes. Then turned it off and on by long press on the power button. Then I got an error saying that the encyption process was disrupted and that I have to wipe my phone (strange given that I did not select any encryption button in TWRP). Anyhow, then I fastboot formatted the phone and that's it.
Thank so much for anyone who can help!!!
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (I recommend blu_spark's TWRP) reboot to recovery, if it doesn't work, try:
fastboot boot recovery recovery.img
See if you boot to recovery and then try flashing a custom ROM.
Hi Fobos, thanks for responding quickly.
I tried using fastboot boot command (with twrp-3.0.2-0-oneplus3.img). No luck with that.
Also, didn't find a downloadable blu_spark *.img version for twrp recovery. would you be so kind to add a link?
Thank you.
Now I think it's hard bricked ( Help!!!
Phone just stopped responding. Mostly doesn't respond. Occasionaly turns on for a nano second, flashes the +1 logo and turns off. Most of the time it doesnt even do that any more when I press (long / short press) the power button!
Somebody help, please!!

Keep calm and breath in. I was in the same situation.
Take a breath.
So, you have 2 ways depending on what you want. You can either go back to full stock with a flashing tool or you can install a custom recovery and then installing a custom rom (or stock one). I suggest the flashing tool.
Just follow the steps here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3t/how-to/unbrick-unbrick-tutorial-oneplus-3t-t3515306 and if you have any question come back here and ask them.
Good luck.

First format recovery by using command
fastboot format recovery
then flash recovery using
fastboot flash recovery "recovery.img"

Hey Keyembe, thanks for the reply...
Tried to follow the instructions you posted. Did everything to allow unsigned drivers to be installed. Disabled it on from the advanced boot settings, and - when that didn't work, also running on test mode. Neither options work:
In the device manager I right click the android device (currently in fastboot mode), which is installed with Google drivers. I try to update the driver software to the unsigned driver and I get an error saying it's not compatible with my system (Win10 Pro) and that I should make sure it is compatible with an x64 based system.
What now?

Hi Anup!
Thanks for the link to the Blu_Spark version of TWRP.
On CMD Prompt, tried to format recovery, console stopped responding. "Fastboot format recovery"...Just stops responding
Also tried "Fastboot delete recovery". I get a message saying "deleting recovery..." then also stops responding. Nothing happens from there.
I tried to use the OPO3 Root Toolkit. It does detect the fastboot device, but when I try to flash or boot or do anything else other than detection, it is unable to find the device. Says operation failed.
What now? :crying:

Check your cable (try another one), even reinstall your adb drivers on your machine (if Windows).
Let the device charge for 30 minutes at least then retry (charge with new cable too).

Firstly, plug your phone on your computer in recovery mode or fastboot mode.
When you go in cmd and you type "adb devices" do you get anything?
If that works and you still can access recovery, you can install stock rom available on the OnePlus site. Here's a link : http://downloads.oneplus.net/oneplus-3t/oneplus_3t_oxygenos_4.1.3/
Boot into recovery, then install from adb.

Thanks mate, followed the instructions on this post. I never get the device to be detected as Qualcomm. All I get is "Android Phone". I did install the Qualcomm drivers despite the warning I got for installing unsigned drivers. Installation went OK. When I go to the device manager again I still identifies the device as android phone. Also when I click "Have Disk" and select the qualcomm drivers I get an error saying they are incompatible with the device or with an x64 based system (regardless of them being signed or not).
Any ideas?
thanks again..

Strange. Are you sure you turned off Driver Signature Enforcement?
When you hold the power button 10 seconds and plug the phone in, it should not be on. The screen should stay black. (looks like its off)
So make sure it's not trying to boot, because then it probably shows up as Android Phonee again.

Go to Fastboot type 'fastboot erase userdata' (you have to reflash OOS tho.. Make sure you are on the latest TWRP. I'm not a fan of Bluspark but his TWRP is currently more up 2 date.
