Yes, use the latest SuperSU 1.55. Versions prior to that had an issue that would block OTAs from completing successfully.

I'm still a rookie with this nexus but I would need to unlock the bootloader then root right?

Is this true even if you loaded a custom recovery such as TWRP or CVM? My (probably faulty) understanding is that the custom recoveries were missing "something" that kept them from doing an automatic OTA update. Is that still correct?

There is potential for custom recovery to be missing something as they sometimes use custom kernels which sometimes aren't built the exact same way as google/asus, so to be safest stick with stock recovery. I've had this problem on past platforms. On LG, the custom recovery would be able to flash everything except the Phone's radio, because the sequence for that was done in a proprietary manner. That left you with the new rom but the old phone radio, which basically wouldn't boot.
As it stands right now, TWRP 2.6.0.0 includes the stock kernel and has been verified to work for OTA updates. TWRP 2.6.1.0 includes a custom built kernel by the TWRP developers, so it hasn't been tested.
My advice is, stick with stock recovery, then wait it out for someone else to test out OTA updates on the particular custom recovery you are interested in, and then if that is successful, you can consider using that in the future.
What I can say is Google tests their OTA updates using stock recovery, so that is the safest to use, but other recoveries can also work especially if they include a stock kernel (but the chances for issues increases the more they deviate from stock)
Probably just me, but it seems like it is. albeit minor, step backwards going to the stock recovery...
The easiest way would be, if you just boot in the custom recovery to root you device.
fastboot boot name_of_the_recovery.img
Then make a nandroid-backup, so you could easy go back to stock.
(Also choose to backup the recovery)
And after it you could flash the superuser.zip in the recovery.

Appreciate the answers but I just rooted n flashed Clean ROM lol

For starters, I am using an SGH-i747, that shipped with 4.3.
Now, I am not new to rooting/modding my phone. My previous phone, the Samsung Infuse 4G, was very easy to root, install recoveries/ flash ROMs, and unroot. I could go from stock 2.2 to 4.4 in 30 minutes. And I did, a lot. But reading up for the past few days on this phone is making me feel like I have no idea what I'm doing. Plus, there are very mixed results with rooting the GS3 on 4.3 successfully.
''Read the rooting tutorials'', I have, they are from 2012/ early 2013. It is 2014, thing have changed. One, there's apparently this ''KNOX'' thing that triggers when you flash anything that's not from Odin, and there's no back-to-stock 4.3 or any previous Android version because the bootloader has changed. I'm not really worried about Knox ending my warranty forever, I'm worried about the event that I somehow brick my phone, there's no going back to stock.
Looking at the CF-auto root by Chainfire, the amount of bad votes HERE for the SAMSUNG SGH-I747 is disheartening. Also, that the post hasn't been edited since Nov. 2012...
Unless someone has a surefire way to get root (and maybe a custom recovery) I would like advice on if THIS video looks legit.. If it is, then after I gain root, should I be able to download a recovery from ROM Manager or something similar? (I'm asking because that's how easy it was on my Infuse)
I feel very weird posting in the QA section, as I have only done so maybe 4 times...but any help would be greatly appreciated. If I need to clear anything up, for some reason, feel free to tell me. I'll probably be hovering over this thread like a vulture.
You should not need root to install a custom recovery. You can install a custom recovery from Odin which will trip the Knox counter.

But the things I want to install from the recovery will require root. Would using the custom recovery to flash a superuser.apk give me root access?
Edit; thought after posting, would flashing a ROM with superuser work with just having a custom recovery?
I prefer installing a custom recovery via Odin rather than ROM manager. Most ROMs are pre-rooted. If it's not, you can download SupeUS or Superuser and flash in recovery.
In my opinion, the safest root method is from Method 2 in this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47747640&postcount=1
If you can flash TWRP in step 2, then I would immediately make a full backup, before moving to step 3. If step 2 fails, then your operating system is not affected. Just your counters and maybe your recovery. And if step 2 succeeds, then an immediate backup of your operating system before removing anything or adding any root might save you a lot of headaches latter on if something goes wrong.

Oh boy, I hope you're right.
Edit 1; ok, backing up now, this works.
Edit 2; after a successful backup and pressing reboot, TWRP prompted me that I hadn't yet installed SU, which it then allowed me to install. Reboot and open the app drawer, it was there, but had to update from the play store. Voila, rooted with a custom recovery, thank you to both for assistance! It was easier than I thought it was going to be.
No problem.
Don't know if you are aware you can flash 4.3 via S3Rx in the development section it is pre rooted you can use the MJ2 bootloader and you can flash back and forth as you please. Just don't use the MJB bootloader you should be fine.
Good luck and Happy flashing.

I guess since I already have a thread opened, I'll ask this, too;
What's the difference between the Android Development and the Original android Development? The forum for my previous phone only had 1 development section, so most of the layout of this entire forum is new to me.

Ok, so here is my issue. For the sake of time, i want to make this question as simple as possible.
I've been putting it off, but now that kit kat is here, i need to get the ball rolling with twrp and my phone. Basically, i am on zv7, rooted stock. I have not been able to install twrp on my phone, and I need someone who would be merciful enough to help me out, to explain to me how to install it on stock zv7, and get kit kat, as i dont want to unroot. I have yet to find instructions online that would be able to help me with my particular situation... Any help would be appreciated.... Thank you for your time guys.

You can update with stock rooted. Why are you not on at least ZVA? You don't need a custom recovery to be rooted. You can be rooted and have stock recovery, but any time you take an OTA update you lose the root and have to rerun ioroot.

My point exactly. I don't want to lose root, and i don't want to reroot. Even if i took the OTA on stock rooted, i'm pretty sure it would break several things I have now as i use alot of apps that require root privilegedes, e.g titanium backup. I realize you don't need to have twrp to be rooted (as i am rooted), but i do need it to safely flash an updated 4.4 zip that would preserve my root privileges, and upgrade me to kitkat...
P. S, i am not on ZVA because when i soft bricked earlier this year, i had to go back to full unrooted stock, and in my rush to reroot, forgot to upgrade to zva before rooting, which is why im on zv7...

If you follow this method you will not lose root. But, 4.4.2 can be rooted with ioroot25 anyway, and it's easy.
The only way to enter custom recovery will be through a terminal emulator command (see post #2). If you take the OTA, you will lose custom recovery altogether.

It sounds like it would be easier for me to just take the OTA and reroot then go through this process of getting a custom recovery... Can i take the OTA on stock rooted zv7 without any serious reprocussions?

If I'm not mistaken when you check for updates, you will have to update to zv8, then zva, then it will offer zvc. Check in your updater what it says is available. I don't expect you'll have any issues as long as you haven't modified files/removed system files.

No. You will have to unfreeze those apps and completely remove xposed. You might want to flash Youdug's odexed stock rom if you continue to run into snags.
Also: If you are taking the OTA on your phone, you should probably unroot.
Ok, so here is what i did. I updated all the way to zva, but now im not seeing the kitkat update. How do i go about getting kitkat since the update broke root completely?
Just a note for those who want to preserve root while doing an OTA, supersu and superuser have a "survival mode" for people who want to preserve root. I had to factory reset so i couldn't do it, but just something to keep in mind.

If you're not seeing the update you have a few options. Some say clearing Google services framework data and hitting check for updates repeatedly works. You can install it using the method above, or you can flash autoprime's .tot file using LG flash tool.
You can always re-root with ioroot25 if you need to.
Just want to say thanks to everyone here who took the time to help me out. For those of you who want to know, i decided to root from zva. I used the freegee app to download and install recovery (super easy) and am about to flash cm11 for stock kitkat.
RUU GPE Conversion: Will I lose root if I do an OTA?
If so, how would I get root back without flashing a custom recovery so I can continue to get further OTA's?
You could just extract the recovery from the ruu zip file and flash it back after. Apparently, some have gotten this phone to boot custom recovery without flashing but I never could though, flashing custom then flashing back the stock doesn't hurt anything.
Though, if I remember correctly, there is both a prerooted and uprooted version of the ruu zip.

You could always try it and see. Worse case scenario you flash them back. Save what you flash, make nandroids/titanium backups when you make changes. That's what I do. Any issues arise, makes for a quick fix and restore of apps.

Last question for you: I changed my soft keys using the application Softkeyz. If I flash an OTA, will I lose the changed soft keys?
I relocked the bootloader, flashed the stock recovery, and I get a message that something was wrong with chromewithbrowser and the install couldn't continue.
Any ideas?
Also, what is even in the recent OTA anyway? Anything of worth?
I added init.d support to the stock kernel. Would that cause the issue?

Use a stock kernel and a stock recovery with your proper nandroid and do the OTA. You can do a reset of the device than do the OTA
chromewithbrowser isnt changed by the kernel. you need :
100% stock ROM
kernel
recovery
then you can update.
Ok. That's where I'm going wrong then, because I added init.d support to the stock kernel. Thanks. I'll try it again tomorrow.

If you're totally on stock than you should be using the stock kernel already unless you flashed a custom kernel?
I modified the kernel by adding init.d support to it. I'm supposing that in itself made the kernel non stock. I flashed the stock recovery and even locked the bootloader, but it still wouldn't let me install the OTA.
Stock recovery reported some kind of error involving ChromewithBrowser, so that didn't really make sense to me.

what you must do is backup what you need. go to the general section and check for the collection of stock backups. download the appropriate matching backup and restore it (it has the stock kernel and modules in it) then flash back the stock recovery and update the phone.

Not sure how to go about making the phone accept an OTA now though without the possibility of going back to stock, and I definitely don't want to do that.
I do have the stock recovery ready to go, just can't seem to find the stock kernel to accompany it. Maybe with both, it'll allow it to go through.
Although, if the update isn't really anything helpful or important, I can just stop worrying about it altogether. I plan on snagging the M9 when it's out, so the need for an OTA goes out the window if this one isn't necessary and the Lollipop one is due around the same time of the next flagship release.
