I need some more information about rooting a phone. Yes, used to have my HTC One X rooted and I was able to customize everything but what are some of the distavantages of rooting my phone. For example, releasing the warranty...
Thanks,
Do you have the retail model or developer edition?

I once came across an app that would not even boot because it had detected that my phone had been rooted, when I had my DROID RAZR MAXX (XT-912). I just Googled it, though and found an APK file that was the same app, but hacked to avoid root checking. That's really the only disadvantage I can think of to rooting.

Honestly, that's one of them. Some apps will not work on rooted phones.

Just root and flash a custom ROM from here. I have never heard that you can NOT root a carrier specific device. I bought a T-Mobile version of P-605 from Germany and I unlocked it by rooting and flashing a custom ROM.

The bootloader is locked. The current CF auto root methods do not work. Odin fails. At least they didn't before. If I am wrong please let me know.

Have you tried all methods? If nothing works then maybe you need to wait until someone cracks it? I have always been able to un-brand carrier specific devices.

No go on Kingo...did some reading up on it too...its not recommended as it may be trying to install some malware.

lol I genuinely appreciate your reckless testing. I'm not familiar enough with the process to be hopeful or hopeless about the future for dev on vzw bootloader shenanigans. I willingly let vroot attempt to get access on my vzw note 3, fail, then asked kingo to violate the sanctuary before getting it right. There's many people who know a LOT more than me who will swear up and down about risks being benign but I think it's undeniable the entire process is more than unsanitary.
I wouldn't sell my soul to the devil for root/vstrap on this device but then again... he has yet to make an offer.

Well rooting is really easy if you want to use vroot. Just search for vroot or iroot (an .apk that runs on your phone without connecting to a PC.) After you're rooted, just search through twrp threads on how to flash a recovery and unlocking your bootloader. If your bootloader is locked, you will end up bricking your device so be careful and do your homework first. Good luck

when i get to twrp after running sunshine for s-off, it has option to keep read only or swipe to allow modification. which do i choose for wiping data?
Does this work for Verizon devices? Also, if the phone is encrypted should we decrypt prior?

So...just to clarify...Verizon users cannot: unlock bootloader, flash custom recovery/SU, or anything without using the mail-in method at the current time...is this correct?

yes that is correct. you could just buy the unlocked developer edition and then unlock root and s-off then flash the Verizon RUU and have a Verizon edition that is unlocked and awesome. or mail your phone to Jcase and he will unlock the bootloader and s-off for you. either way

Haha, well...too late for buying the unlocked version...but, if we cannot come up with a backup device to mail-in our current...from what I gather...jcase is pretty certain Sunshine will be available for the Verizon users in the future?

yeah the problem is that Jcase is having trouble coming up with a good way to package the exploit he is using on the HTC 10 verizon so that it can be done in the SunShine app. Thats the hold up at this point.

If you want to use it on Verizon you likely will be stuck on custom roms and Verizon firmware anyways ....without firmware from vzw it won't work and without a rom that has vzw advanced call features built in you will be missing out on stuff.

Thanks for this Tom,
But could explain why you need S-off? What are the benefits of having s-off or s-on?
If anyone can help or point me in the right direction would be appreciated because I think my phone is broke. I have an unlocked HTC 10 (non-carrier), unlocked bootloader, s-off(via sunshine), twrp 3.0.1-0-pme. The phone was rooted but ater a factory reset (s-on during that time) to try to get xposed to work data no longer works. I've done the following at least 3 time each with no change in results: format data, factory reset, flash SuperSU-v2.72-forceencrypt, flash SuperSU-v2.72, restore back up from twrp, re-flashed twrp. Can anyone tell me if I'm missing a step or is my phone useless. Thank you in advance!

yeah this does happen at times you need to restore a stock system image and boot image in twrp then wipe encryption to get your DATA working again.

We don't even have root access, let alone an unlocked bootloader to flash anything. Someone might be working on it in the eventuality of an unlocked bootloader? But probably not.

Those must be the Exnos variants, all SD versions are currently bootloader locked. With a locked bootloader we have no access to flashing custom recoveries and with that no ROMs, root or mods

Look in the S8 plus forum for ROMs for the Partcyborg ROM. You should be able to flash that because it is a bootloader version 2 ROM.
