Just now, first time reading about this Knox bit. I just this morning purchased from Best Buy a Galaxy Tab S 8.4" tablet. Going to old habits, I immediately look to a rooting method, and what some of the more popular ROMs are. But just curious on feedback, should I be worried about this Knox bit? If I ever have to return to stuck for a warranty claim, are they immediately able to tell that bit has been flipped? Does flipping the bit really lead to potential overheating and other issues?

Well.. Someone claimed that they got warrenty repaired even if knox was tripped. And it was a power button defect. And someone else said that they still had to pay since they tripped knox.
So its a 50/50 chance that samsung will repair your tab s if knox is tripped. I too was worried. Rooted and tripped knox and had no hardbricks so far. Twrp and odin saves me from softbricks but odin can fail sometimes.
To answer your question: knox being tripped doesnt do anything it just trips an efuse and say that knox is tripped. It doesnt overheat or nothing. If you return it for warrenty claim they can tell if it was tripped. Some may not check some do. Hope this helps!

2) It's not clear to me if it's tripped on whatever rooting changes (guessing so), or if it's when ROMs are loaded. Assuming it's rooting (which must typically bring new kernel?), does anything thing there's a chance that if we hold out that someone will find a rooting method that won't trip it. I stumbled across the Galaxy Tab Pro section and I see they claim to have a rooting method that doesn't trip the bit. So wondering if I suffer without root for a while if we might see such a thin here? Mind you, I know no one is a fortune teller.

1. If they check you tripped knox and denied your warranty claim, I belive they will ask you the option to pay for the fix. Though I cant be sure as thats what I heard but im pretty sure.
2. Well cfautoroot flashes root and reverts your recovery back to stock. Um.. With the towelroot method of not tripping knox... For the tab pro you downgrade your kernel/build. Though no one has tried downgrading their kernel to like a build before towelroot was patched for the tab s.. I dont know if it will work for the tab s.
I dont even know if we will see a universal root like towelroot. Geohotz is working for google and isnt updating towelroot for newer devices. But there is a huge bounty for rooting the note4 or something like that. But the chances of it working for other devices are pretty low. Hope this helps!

I'm not sure if anyone tried kingroot but it works on KitKat for the Tab S. You can try it on the firmware your on now but if it doesn't work, you may need to find the oldest kitkat firmware then try again.

If you trip Knox, warranty may be void and Samsung may refuse to service it for defective units. But some say they got it services even if it was tripped. 50/50 chance

2) Sprint stores do not, in my experience, care is you have tripped Knox. If you need to have a warranty repair, use Odin to restore stock (which is in the instructions above) and they will honor the warranty.
There are numerous articles, including here on XDA, on how rooting does NOT void your warranty. I have sold rooted phones back to Sprint. Of course I wiped and restored back to stock because I was not going to share my private data (which is just common sense.)
But to your question, yes you can root and there are some really good ROMs. Renegade is the slickest out now. You lose Samsung Pay (and Android pay if you stay rooted) but you have a great phone.

I have Verizon now and they don't have any way to unlock the boot loader yet. thinking about switching before my 14 days are up.
Hi all I've tried to do my research here first before asking but their is a vast amount of choice. I'm wanting to have root access for my Samsung Tab s 8.4 SM-T705 tablet. Its running stock android version 6.0.1 at the moment. I read some methods root the device but trip knox? Its a second hand device so Samsungs Warranty is long gone but the shop I bought it from does give it a 2 year warranty so would be nice if their is a way to root but not trip knox. If its too difficult then not too fussed about tripping it as its just a tablet I'm using to pair controllers to and mess around with to try things out.
What would be the best or most successful method or guide to follow for my tablet?

If you downgrade to lollipop you can use Kingroot.
I asked in one of the root threads and didn't get a reply. From looking through the existing threads I understand that you lose samsung pay and the hidden folder feature. I can live with those but is there any other features lost when unlocking the bootloader?
1.) Once knox is tripped will features be lost forever or start working again once tablet is returned to stock?
2.) Still shows as widevine L1? Any loss in resolution from an streaming apps (youtube, netflix, amazon prime, youtube tv)?
3.) Any other apps or features not working?
1. I rooted my Note 4 phone and Note Pro 12.2 tablet some years ago. Back then, I did this installing a custom recovery called TWRP. This blows an e-fuse on the main board, which prohibits Knox from working forever. Flashing back to stock recovery can't "unblow" a fuse.

3. In my experience, rooting broke only those apps that relied on Knox. But I suppose these days more apps are likely to detect if they're running on a rooted device and refuse to run. That would account for the popularity of tools like Magisk that try to hide the root state from apps.
After I moved away from those devices (S7 Edge and Tab S3 were next in my history), I abandoned the rooting game. Not sure the value is worth the cost anymore.
EDIT: There are apparently ways to root without flashing a custom recovery -- this was news to me, and shows how long I've not been playing the rooting game, heh.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I have rooted my samsung devices in the past as well but I believe the last one I did was my note 4 as well but I don't remember widevine being a thing back then or at least I didn't care. Of all the features I am concerned about that. Don't really care about the other samsung features save for maybe dex but I don't think that is affected. Can anyone rooted confirm if they still have widevine? Is any legit premium video app like netflix or youtube tv affected? My oneplus 7 pro had widevine downgraded I believe when the bootloader unlocked which was annoying.

That's not quite true these days.
Using Magisk to root doesn't "blow the e fuse".
Rooting without installing TWRP will keep the warranty status 0x0 which is valid.
BTW: Netflix ect. Works just fine.
It's nice to see old Note 4 guyz around. I was very active in the sprint Note 4 forums years ago. IMO that was the very best phone samsung ever made. @tx_dbs_tx was a mad man of a developer for that device.

Confirmed that unlocking the boot loader and rooting with modified firmware does trip Knox. Magisk can try to conceal this bypass some security checks, but not always successfully.

100% agree. Once upon a time a Galaxy Note was not just a Galaxy S with a stylus. Alas, it appears Samsung is diligently heading away from what made the Note a distinctive device.

I thought the knox tripped when you unlock the bootloader, don't you need to do this even if you root your device without installing twrp?

Yes you do need to unlock the bootloader to root your device... But that doesn't trip knox.
Rooting with magisk will definitely trip knox, even without TWRP.

You lose L1 once the BL is unlocked though. So kiss goodbye HD on netflix and such on the ts7+ which is beneficial.

Did you see the picture in the post that was quoted?
It shows as rooted and knox efuse intact. So the warranty would still be good as long as it doesn't trip the efuse.
Look at the picture before telling me a generic answer. I already know that when the excuse is blown the warranty is lost. How do they have root without tripping the efuse?

unlpcking bootloader alone doesnt trip knox but as soon as u flash any custom firmware i.e. disabled vbmeta, twrp, magisk etc. then it will trip knox.
theres thousands of threads on xda alone about tripped knox and what works n doesnt work so id go n look for urself before anything..
and usually it will break ota updates but can depend on device etc. but ull likely have to update via odin

dunno what L1 is but unlocking by itself doesnt trio knox, its custom firmware that trips it.. basically anything u do after unlocking lol
and netflix can still work.. its trivial for netflix
