Sdcard - ntfs - twrp - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First off happy holidays to all. <br />
Had a sdcard question. <br />
<br />
I was trying to copy a movie to my sdcard and it was telling me it was too large of a file (4.2gb). So I reformatted it to ntfs bc I remembered there is no limit for in that storage format. <br />
<br />
Now I can't view my sdcard in twrp any longer? Is that the reason? Does it need to be formatted back to fat32?<br/>

Android doesn't support ntfs. By rooting and some changes you can have ntfs support. But the easiest way is formating your sd with "exfat" In windows seven and above. It's supported by android and you can have larg files.

External SD CWM backup?

Hi guys,
I have my clockwork mod folder on my external SanDisk 16gb sdhc...does anyone know how to be able to restore this way? Does the backup have to be on internal storage? I don't see a "mount ext sd" option in mounts...
While I'm asking this..
When you move apps to external do they no longer show up in your app drawer...? I'm using go launcher but it seems they disappear when I move them to external sd card.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I927R using xda premium
I would like to know about using the external sd card for cwm instead of internal as well....
by default from what I read CWM uses the internal SD card but I believe I heard some people mentioning on the forums that you can modify something in the kernel or a config file somewhere to change this. Unfortunately I do not know how sorry.

Ive looked through every kernel thread and just about every rom thread and dont see anything about being able to switch it over to using your external sd card for backups....it sux but guess its not possible yet
There is a few posts in the CWM thread that talk about swapping the internal SD for the External SD.

Thanks, but not needed. I swapped my internal/external storage and this recovery now perfectly fits for me - my .android_secure is backed up by backup tool now - that's only why I asked.
How about adding
Code:

/dev/block/mmcblk1p2 /sd-ext ext4 rw
to the fstab ?

Ill have to give it a try, kinda scared too cuz im a noob at that kinda stuff but i appreciate the help!
ok so im using root explorer, opened up the fstab file to edit and am stuck there, not really sure where to add those commands at...i think it would just be easier to leave it on internal storage lol
Yes it would be easier to leave it as it is. Lol. I have modified the fstab in Linux but not on my phone. If it is the same type of file you need to make sure you are opening it as root and there should already be a line with your current file system being mapped and simply replace it with the new line.

Sorry you guys got bit. Cyanogenmod has a built-in routine to manage storage, so this is for stock roms. But what do you mean by soft-brick?
I've added a note to the link's OP warning about cm9. Below you'll see cm9's vold.fstab; it's quite different from a stock Samsung. From the instructions:
If your device's /system/etc/vold.fstab file matches the attached original Galaxy Exhibit fstab file, it may work for you as well.

Your original vold.fstab was saved when the app first runs. You can rename the backup and reboot to recover from any problem.
I tried this and it says that my 32gb sd card is usb storage. Is there a way to make it system memory? When i did this it gave me less system memory and made my usb storage huge. I would rather have more system memory than usb storage.

[Q] Desire Internal memory

Hi Guys
Found this link:

The only thing is the links are old, just wondering if there is a noobs guide somewhere to do a similar job increasing the internal memory of my Desire.
Thanks
Martin
all you need is to partition your sd card properly, use 4ext recovery or gparted, plenty of guides you can search for. also s-off and install the rom on a suitable hboot to use internal space more efficiently.
the partition is your extra internal memory, just need to use it. virtually all custom roms will have an a2sd script built in for more space for apps, check each rom's thread. some may require terminal commands to activate it, or you can search for various a2sd scripts which effectively do the same thing. some scripts won't appear to actually 'increase' your internal memory. but the partition is still being used for apps, which is all you really need.
in other words, you don't really need a guide to increase the internal memory. the main reason for rooting in the first place is more space for apps. pretty much any custom rom has this facility already.

A2SD will work fine on s-on, just need correctly partitioned sd card, and kernel / Rom which supports init.d script afaik
@OP, how did you create the ext4 partition, follow abaaaabbbb's guide in his sig
Check you have no other a2sd script in system/etc/init.d
Then reboot after you've created new scripts. Check you are using partitions using another app like diskusage

i'm merely saying that it shouldnt matter it you're s-on or s-off, A2SD should work regardless.
you don't need swap partition, ignore it.
I realise now, that if you merely s-off and rooted stock the rom, A2SD may not work because it won't support init.d scripts, i think but not sure.
you can check if it supports A2SD by using a root file explorer, search the market for something like ES file explorer. enable root access and browse to see if there is a folder called system/etc/init.d
if you don't have this folder, you will need a custom rom to use A2SD. you can stick with pre-rooted stock rom with init.d support here. or you can pick a different rom altogether, some have A2SD built in, so you won't have to flash anything else, check each OP.
if you stick with the pre-rooted stock rom i linked, instead of flashing the A2SD script in the OP, you can then use mount2sd OR link2sd, not both. what they do is create a new script in init.d folder to move the apps automatically to partition.
do not use an additional app like the one you posted to move apps to sd. that will move apps to the FAT32 partition of the sd card, not the ext4 partition. you shouldn't have to manually move anything, keep them on 'internal', flashing the scripts automatically tricks them to sd-ext. like i said, use diskusage once everything else is setup to browse your partitions. you won't see your internal memory increasing (so it won't be 147MB + ext4 partition), but the ext4 partition will still be in use.
you'll have to full wipe, so backup everything first before trying any of this.
EDIT: sorry just found this. it adds init.d support to your existing stock rooted rom, should work for any device apparently. can hopefully get A2SD working without having to switch rom.
try:
- nandroid backup (essential)
- flash the init.d mod
- reboot
- install mount2sd OR link2sd, you pick
- reboot
- install diskusage to see if it worked...

like i said, should work for any device. i just read the last few posts to find out. i've not tried it myself, which is why i strongly recommend nandroid backup just in case.
if it doesn't work, just use the other link i posted to stock rooted rom, already with init.d support.

I personally use the Nokia 5233
connect your phone to PC,enable mass storage, install mini tool partition wizard on PC and open it and there you'll see your hdd and sdcard partitions, then delete sdext partition and extend the fat32 partiton of sdcard with the free space that has left after deleting sdext partition

Can't find internal storage in TWRP once external SD card is merged with internal

I used the Marshmallow feature to merge the external SD card with the internal memory.
I decided to flash SuperSU but when I rebooted into TWRP I could only see the root directory and I'm not sure how to get to the internal storage. Looking at it in Solid Explorer it appears that the internal storage should be at:
/storage/emulated/0
but the storage folder doesn't seem to be in the root directory when I look at it in TWRP.
Any ideas?
Internal storage is mounted under /DATA and /SDCARD in TWRP.

Tested this on Marshmallow with the external sdcard mounted as internal storage, but it isn't mounted there.
Same here.
How to mount Internal storage or SDCard formatted as Internal storage in TWRP ?
it may have something to do with the new way of handling sd cards in marshmallow
(I know this thread is old but have seen the question asked many times but not solved).
Have been using sideload for the last month - thought there must be an easier way. There is!!
Access /data via a file manager (as root) and copy the zip to /data . You can then access it via recovery.

Don't mean to be a jackass... But, what zip file should I move to /data?
---------- Post added at 03:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:22 PM ----------
Wait, you mean whatever I wanna flash?
Yes, the CM rom zip, supersu zip or whatever it is you want to flash. Just remember to delete it after you've flashed it (or before you copy the next update there) so you don't fill up that partition.
Hey. If there is someone who can reply to this thread?
It seems there isn't any workaround yet to solve this problem
moving to /data works! thanks!
Wondering if TWRP will solve this file reading problem in the future. Also are there other folders that can be read in TWRP besides /data? Just wondering. Thanks.
hi guys,
i figured out this problem
1. reboot to your recovery (twrp)
2. click mount
3. enable mtp and click on usb (which is at the down left corner)
4. connect your device to your pc with a usb cable and load the files which you wanna flash .

To fix this I simply re formatted the sd card as external, unfortunately losing the data on the sd card.

What you described is normal.
When you activate adoptable storage the internal and external storage become combined. There is no separate external sd card as it's all treated as internal.
In recovery internal would have also been external storage.

Ummm, if I had root there would be no need to flash supersu. And without root, I can't flash SuperSU. Wonderful.
@ahmed rashid, thanks for pointing out that the device can be mounted via MTP when in recovery! That saved the day.
If u have rooted device & Su then the path of internal storage in recovery must have, Select data/media/get into internal storage files & folder
