[Q] Desire Internal memory - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys
Found this link:

The only thing is the links are old, just wondering if there is a noobs guide somewhere to do a similar job increasing the internal memory of my Desire.
Thanks
Martin

all you need is to partition your sd card properly, use 4ext recovery or gparted, plenty of guides you can search for. also s-off and install the rom on a suitable hboot to use internal space more efficiently.
the partition is your extra internal memory, just need to use it. virtually all custom roms will have an a2sd script built in for more space for apps, check each rom's thread. some may require terminal commands to activate it, or you can search for various a2sd scripts which effectively do the same thing. some scripts won't appear to actually 'increase' your internal memory. but the partition is still being used for apps, which is all you really need.
in other words, you don't really need a guide to increase the internal memory. the main reason for rooting in the first place is more space for apps. pretty much any custom rom has this facility already.

I followed your guide, thanks, seemed to work fine. The only problem is it has removed my Playstore, any ideas?

Download another play store apk and install it.

Hi, Iam trying to make more space on my desire...i create ext4 partition and try to make it work with mount2sd and link2sd but what ever I do cant move apps. I am rooted stock room. Is there any way to make it work on stock rom?

Apps move themselves. In mounts2sd, move app and dalvik.

I try mount2sd and try ext4 ext3 partition but app cant recognise ext partition. I try everything. Link2sd recognise ext3 partition but doesnt work well...link apps but dont move all data or any thing. I do same thing on my girlfriend alcatel ot 990 and works like charm(its new functional phone couse before that phone have like 80mb int. mem.)
Please any halp...tutorial or something,I read all posts but I cant finde solution. Maybe Mount2sd cant work on desire stock rom or something?

Are you s-off? If not, you cannot use a2sd.

Yes ...s-off,rooted with stock gingerbread rom...I just root my phone and whant to make more storage. Install busy box...and do all that is writen.
Would I try to delete some files...maybe something block mount2sd...but I do factory reset and try,and nothing.

A2SD will work fine on s-on, just need correctly partitioned sd card, and kernel / Rom which supports init.d script afaik
@OP, how did you create the ext4 partition, follow abaaaabbbb's guide in his sig
Check you have no other a2sd script in system/etc/init.d
Then reboot after you've created new scripts. Check you are using partitions using another app like diskusage

i'm merely saying that it shouldnt matter it you're s-on or s-off, A2SD should work regardless.
you don't need swap partition, ignore it.
I realise now, that if you merely s-off and rooted stock the rom, A2SD may not work because it won't support init.d scripts, i think but not sure.
you can check if it supports A2SD by using a root file explorer, search the market for something like ES file explorer. enable root access and browse to see if there is a folder called system/etc/init.d
if you don't have this folder, you will need a custom rom to use A2SD. you can stick with pre-rooted stock rom with init.d support here. or you can pick a different rom altogether, some have A2SD built in, so you won't have to flash anything else, check each OP.
if you stick with the pre-rooted stock rom i linked, instead of flashing the A2SD script in the OP, you can then use mount2sd OR link2sd, not both. what they do is create a new script in init.d folder to move the apps automatically to partition.
do not use an additional app like the one you posted to move apps to sd. that will move apps to the FAT32 partition of the sd card, not the ext4 partition. you shouldn't have to manually move anything, keep them on 'internal', flashing the scripts automatically tricks them to sd-ext. like i said, use diskusage once everything else is setup to browse your partitions. you won't see your internal memory increasing (so it won't be 147MB + ext4 partition), but the ext4 partition will still be in use.
you'll have to full wipe, so backup everything first before trying any of this.
EDIT: sorry just found this. it adds init.d support to your existing stock rooted rom, should work for any device apparently. can hopefully get A2SD working without having to switch rom.
try:
- nandroid backup (essential)
- flash the init.d mod
- reboot
- install mount2sd OR link2sd, you pick
- reboot
- install diskusage to see if it worked...

Ok,I see I can do this with instaling rom like in first link...but are you shore this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1912504

like i said, should work for any device. i just read the last few posts to find out. i've not tried it myself, which is why i strongly recommend nandroid backup just in case.
if it doesn't work, just use the other link i posted to stock rooted rom, already with init.d support.

Application Space

I have the HTC Desire on Telus.
I have Apps2SD installed, as well as Android 2.2. Currently I am unrooted but was rooted before and the same issue.
I can move some applications to the SD card, but not all of them. Also its only part of the application. I am still running out of space all the time.
Am I missing something, how do you install and run an application from the SD card?
Root. Youre using stock a2sd which doesnt fully move the app to the sd so it still uses storage space. Root and a2sd+ is what youre after
Sent from my HTC Desire
As I said in my post, I was Rooted before, still didn't install the full application and cache and everything to sd.
Well if you rooted but didn't partition your SD card for A2SD+, then you did nothing extra.
Root > partition SD card > reinstall ROM
Link to the instructions on how to do it exactly, make sure I do it correct this time around.
Thanks.
So I did that, you can only partition the SD card as 512MB, which is clearly the same as internal memory. Also, the applications still only move some of itself over to the sd card.......
I can't use Gparted for reasons, is there another program that does the same that works with windows?
Anyone....really......come on....
MiniTool Partition Wizard (google it) works under Windows and can create ext3 partition SD Cards. It's the only one i found that actually works, and it's free.
As an alternative, you can instal ROM Manager on your phone and use it to create ext3 partition, although it's limited to 512MB.
Thanks for that application.
So I formatted my SDcard, reinstalled the rom and I still have only 114MB free, and 2GB missing from my SDCard now...WTF
Yeah, but data will be stored on ext3 partition so you will be able to install more apps. I now have 200mb of apps, and still have 40% free in internal memory.
The new Adobe Flash update increases the already ludicrous amount of space this app takes up on your phone. Was 10.96MB, now 11.29MB.
No Froyo move to SD.
Can someone please give me instructions from start to finish on how to do this because clearly I'm doing it wrong, I have 114MB internal free with fresh install.
Just install applications, you'll see they now take way less space in phone memory. You won't see that partition as available space.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Would still be nice to have instructions for next time.
And so your telling me there is no point to making a 2GB extra partition, since you can't move the apps fully over, that's what I thought, and this was a waste of time.
Instructions can be found all over the xda forums...seriously its not that hard to find..u need a rooted phone, a ROM that supports A2SD and an ext2 or ext3 partition on ur sd-card.

Yea, these forums are bloated with topics and new posts every 5 seconds, its hard to find anything. And I found a tutorial or 2, obviously I did it wrong.
So a direct link, or a new step by step would be great. Everyone is acting like its easy, so shouldnt be hard to write a quick step by step or give a link..lol

Okay....what ROM are you using? Stock 2.2 only supports Google's way of moving Apps (i.e. moving some of it and leaving the rest behind). Even with rooting, the stock ROM WILL NOT move everything to SD. So you need a new ROM which will support the A2SD feature.....so selecting a new ROM (even a modified version of the stock one) would be your first step. Make sure this ROM has support for A2SD or A2SD+....
Edit: If you do decide to make the "full" switch, it is recommended to S-OFF if possible.... I am fairly confident that you are following the right steps but the ROM isn't supporting it.
I am currently running your ROM, the Oxygen v2.0-RC6 Gingerbread ROM. And i dont know what S-OFF is. I am assuming a way to power off.

Have you also got a custom recovery? like ClockworkMod (can be found on the Market) or AmonRa (i don't use this).... you will need one of them if you want to enable A2SD with Oxygen ROM. This is because the oxygen ROM, by default, writes app data into the internal memory rather than into any external partitions.
Basically once you create your ext3, you have to boot into the custom recovery and flash this:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2263716/dalv...2SD-signed.zip
and reboot..and that should do the trick.
That's the general summary of the steps. Read the link for more details on partitioning:
Link on SD card partitioning: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=910290
EDIT: Put simply, S-OFF (security off) allows you to install custom HBOOT image (such as the one I have..) which give you more space in you internal memory. Alpharev Oxygen HBOOT for example (HBOOT is the bootloader) gives around 337MB as internal space for your apps....which kinda makes EXT3 partitions unnecessary...
You have to be a bit careful with S-OFFing as newer Desire models have new security feature which makes it unsuitable to flash a new HBOOT. Read more about this here:

[Q] Enable Link2SD or A2SD?

Anyone know how to enable and install Link2SD or DT's A2SD on a stock rom? I know Darkshado's method, when you need to flash simpligio without the modem. But is there a way without flashing another rom? I'm also aware of enabling of enabling A2SD for the Galaxy Ace but if I try this on my Gio, will it be safe??? Please help. Thanks for your time!
Hi,
I'm using stock froyo 2.2.1 (S5660DXKC3), rooted and using link2sd.
It very easy to install the link2sd. i suggest using class 10 microsd. Here is the step:
1. Using a PC/laptop, create 2 partition in microsd, 1st is fat32, 2nd is ext2. Set both are primary partition. i use the partition wizard home edition (is free)
2. Set the 2nd partition size not more than 1 Gb, i heard that it will cause an error if more than 1 Gb. Mine are set to 0.8 Gb.
3. Root your phone, i'm using super one click
4. Install link2sd from market
5. Insert your microsd to your phone
6. Start link2sd, it will ask for the 2nd partition. pick the ext2
7. Reboot/restart your phone
If you want to use A2sd on stock rom, use must use modified boot.img. A2sd can't work on standard boot.img (CMIIW)
And use custom kernel

To enable link2SD or a2SD on 2.2 it is very easy.but on gingerbread, you need to flash a custom kernel(such as phiexz's kernel),because of the kernel doesn't support init.d script.

Use a SD card reader!! Not from your phone!! Also you need custom kernel.
Ok first partition your SD card. Use the program call MiniTool Partition Wizard. This is on your PC. There are guides all over the web for this but I'll sum it up for youse. Make a SD-EXT with the options > Primary > Ext4 > 4Kb Cluster size
Download Darktremor's A2SD and put in the root of your SDcard. Once done plug SD back to phone. Make sure phone is off. Enter recovery and find the a2sd zip and flash. Reboot the phone and it will bootloop for maybe 2 times. Then it should have installed a2sd correctly!!
Hope this helps
merci! I DO indeed have a custom kernel (ArpegGioMod ftw) but I bit the bullet and installed Link2SD, and it seems to be performing okay.. slightly sluggish fps with Mupen64, but nothing a little OC can't fix. lol
Just for your information, you don't need to have a custom kernel for Link2SD.
I'm using it with 2 primary fat partitions on (rooted) stock 2.3.4.
And It's working like a charm.
Has anyone noticed that on a reboot link2sd starts to relink apps and sometimes some apps are removed from the phone. I have always experienced this and I have reinstalled link2sd many times, but the problem still persists.

you need to partition your sd-card with an EXT3 or EXT4 partition besides your fat32
yeah, i already did that. what now?
It should simply work.
Can you check it in titanium or so?
heh, it dont work. do i need to install terminal emulator or something and insert some codes?
i'm no expert in this but I mostly check space usage in Titanium Backup.

when you say it doesn't work, what does titanium output say when you open it?
if it lists a2sd storage, and free space is less than total, then A2SD is working just fine as it should and already applied. no need for extra commands. keep apps on 'internal', don't manually 'move to sd', and they will continue to use the partition.
i find 'diskusage' a really good app to show how each partition is being used.
one other thing to check, are you s-off with cm7r2 hboot? this will give you a lot more space.
if you upgrade to a more recent version of the ROM, apps and dalvik cache are stored on the ext partition by default, thus giving you even more space. if you want to stick with your current version, there should be zips posted in the thread to move dalvik to sd as well.
The easiest thing to do is installing "s2e" from Google Play Store. Search the tread for more info.
If that's not enough, you should considering flashing "data2sd" - it gives you almost unlimited storage on your phone (google it ) I do think it's supported on your rom... not 100 % sure

Why would you flash INT2EXT4 on any ROM that you flash? By the way, do you delete the already existing a2sd scripts from the ROM before flashing INT2EXT4?

try flashing the rom without flashing INT2EXT4. Most roms have built in a2sd scripts, which allow you to move apps to an sd ext partition.
Also, how did you create the partition, best done with 4ext recovery or gparted.
512MB is also quite small, might want to consider 1-1.5GB.
As above, just flash Rom without another a2sd script as most have them built in or activate with terminal commands, check each thread. Which Rom are you using?

making the partition using cwm may have been your problem. Use this guide to remake the partition. Im assuming you want to use VJ's CM10.1 ROM. If this is the case, there is no need to use INT2EXT4. Instead use the preinstalled a2sd script.
After flashing the rom, you can activate a2sd by doing the following:
Open terminal emulator provided in the rom.
Type the following commands
su
a2sd install
Y

In 4ext, there is an option to "Remove all partitions and start from scratch". Im guessing that deletes/wipes your fat32 partition as well, so back your files up.
If you want to delete it without the fat32 being formated too, you can use gparted. But thats a bit time consuming and a hassle.

Help: Can't make my partition to work properly!

So, I partitioned my card using 4ext recovery method, as shown here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2125513(ext4), but, I can't make it work. After trying to use link2sd(I choose ext4), I get some error(mount in use or something like that), and after that, I can't run any app(not even system apps) and I have to force close them. After I reboot everything works fine but i still don't have access to my ext partition. So, what should I DO?
What ROM are you using? It may already have an a2sd script itself that interferes with link2sd.

I checked sdext with antuk file explorer and i can see files there. But why i dont see any info about it in storage menu? 4ext recognises it and diskinfo recognises it( i attached screenshots). And why is the file system ext2 when i had chosen ext4 when i partitioned?

You wont' necessarily see your total storage = internal + sd-ext, that's just not the way it works.
Don't know why you can't see sd-ext space as a separate partition on that app. Try something like 'diskusage' or titanium backup, you should be able to see it.
As long as you created the partition correctly (one FAT32 partition and one ext4 partition, no swap) you don't need any other apps to make it this rom use the partition. As long as your partition is filling up it is being used.
However, you can use your space more efficiently by changing your hboot. Have a look at your /system partition. You are only using 94MB out of 250MB, with 155MB free which is completely wasted
Since you are already s-off, it is easy to change hboot at least. You can change hboot to something like oxygenR2 with 100MB system size, you'll waste only 6MB and rest gets converted to extra internal memory (332MB instead of 147MB )
- Nandroid backup
- Follow instructions on alpharev.nl to change hboot to OxygenR2 hboot (recommend to use fastboot, guide here)
- Reboot to recovery
- Full wipe and restore nandroid.
Ok, tnx for the help, i probably won't change hboot since volume buttons dont work really well so it would be a struggle... one more q: so now, apps that i keep on phone memory are actually saved in sd-ext?
