Verizon Edge - Note 4 Newbie - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Greetings and Merry Xmas! Quick question for those familiar with the Verizon Edge program - I recently took advantage of the Note 4 deal for $149. Since I've been a Verizon customer for years and never plan on changing (unless North Korea hacks them and ruins the service), I went with the Edge deal, paying $29/month.
Coming from an iPhone 5S, I'm noticing that there were some things I really took for granted, which I'm unable to do on the Note (e.g. One-handed texting, dialing, etc) I know this is possible with some settings adjustments, but the larger size makes it cumbersome. Don't get me wrong, as a tech lover, this thing is awesome. Definitely one of the best phones out there overall.
That aside, if I decide I need to switch back to my iPhone or another (smaller) Android device - is it possible to re-active my old phone to my line without any penalty? Also, if I'm able to do this, doesn't that also mean that I could technically sell my Note 4 on the private market for several hundred beans without any impact to my monthly billing?
Thanks in advance!

I love my Note 4 coming from an S3 but my wife's IPhone 6 plus is no slouch.

Have you tried activating one handed mode? It's amazing when coupled with swype.

Have you tried going to settings, one-handed input? You can shrink the screen and also push your dialer, calculator, keyboard, etc., over to one side. There's even a setting for on-screen buttons that you can move around, so you don't have to move your finger all the way to the bottom of the screen.
As for your other questions, you're going to have to ask Verizon. I have no idea how Verizon Edge works, as I've never used it.

I'll give the setting a try, thanks guys!

Glad my first post was a helpful one!
If you haven't already done so, it's a great idea to go through all of the available settings of every kind for a new phone to see what you might want to try out.

That's why Notes are the best phablets around: they offer the best features for big screens. Want to do several things at once, using your big screen? No problem. Want a smaller screen at times to use with one hand? Samsung has you covered. Want to be able to have access to your buttons without reaching to the bottom of the phone? There's a setting for that.
Anyway, Merry Christmas to you, and I'm glad we could help.

This is why ANDROID is the best because it gives you options...iOS will give you one MAYBE 2 ways of doing something...if you don't like it you're stuck....I have an iPad Mini and while I like the apps and look of the OS...just doing simple tasks you have to find some sort of work around....I think both OS's have their place & some people are better off with one over the other....

U can sell the note 4 with no problems. But u will lose the discount for having a edge device on a 10gb or more plan. And u won't be able to edge up that line unless u pay the edge agreement off or give them the note 4 back

but you will still get the edge discount, because technically you're still in an edge agreement, only thing is you'll be paying for the phone still as well, might not be worth selling.
Honestly I'd keep it, won't get an upgrade for two years either

If you are within your 14 days just pay the 35$ restocking fee and return it. If not, call verizon and see what they can do for you. If the size is your problem they might be able to offer an alternate replacement. It will be a hit or miss but its worth the try. I hope this helps

Really want to get one of these...but hardware problems scare me

Ok so I'm sick and tired of dealing with sprint's pathetic excuse for "3g" speeds. And using 3 year old phone technology (lg optimus).
I've been a part of the android club since the G1 and my biggest gripe has always been the lack of hardware acceleration. Finally I thought, a phone that does this! But everyone is saying there are screen problems...and it's not as snappy as they wish it were.
Are the issues really as bad as some make it out to be? Or are these just people who like to complain for the sake of complaining? If I do order one what should I make sure to check...and how long do you have to send it back?
Really want to click the "order" button on google play...someone convince me!! I was waiting to see what the SGIII was going to be priced at...but I know it'll be way way more. I don't really like the idea of spending more than $400 on a phone.
Nobody can decide for you. If it doesn't work out, return it. You also have a 1-yr warranty for showstopping issues.
Every electronic device has potential issues. Mine has been flawless for months...and I'm not alone.
Regardless of what phone you order there is always the possibility of recieving a device with faulty hardware. In that case you can return it for a new one.
I can't really convince you either way. I love my Nexus, and haven't really had any issues with it. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who asks. SGS3 could turn out to be great, but if you are looking to spend a little less and want something now I'd go for it.

I do want it! Not looking for someone to decide for me...just hoping the issues aren't as widespread as some say. Seems like almost every experience I've read people have had to send the phone back 2-3 times to get a good one.
Kinda crazy for something that's been in production for 6 months now no?
I like mine. You could go to a Verizon store and check the screen out. The biggest gripe people have is on a grey background on low brightness there can be a grainy appearance. Meh. Don't get it if you care but honestly I don't
I haven't had any other hardware issues.

I highly doubt the Galaxy Nexus has any more or less hardware variability or faults than any other phone. People just like to complain, and the minority with issues are ALWAYS more vocal than the people who are happy.

So what's the process for using this phone with tmobile's $30/month plan? I order it online and then take it into any walmart?
Yes, every phone does have it's faults, but the Galaxy Nexus' screen issues is very prominent in so many of these devices that it's ridiculous. And I can tell you firsthand that it is not just for the sake of complaining, a lot of these screens are terrible. I'm waiting on my 3rd Nexus to come in on Wednesday and hopefully there is nothing wrong with it. But I've read countless stories about how many people had to exchange their Nexus 7 or 8 times before they got 1 without problems. But I'm just informing from experience / reading.
Aside from the faulty screens I've gotten, I LOVE this phone. It's amazing and I would definitely recommend you to order this. If you do get 1 with a faulty screen simply exchange it. Everything about this phone is great and for me the Nexus line is the only way to go now.
Not even every phone but almost EVERY device that is made whether it is a radio, television, mouse, speakers, etc. There is a chance of defect. What matters the most is whether or not they will send you a replacement in a timely fashion without question.

Buy this: http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-phone/T-Mobile-Prepaid-SIM-Activation-Kit
When it arrives, activate it here: http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-activate
Put it in your phone.
DON'T go into a store. Its an "online only" plan. Call customer service if you need to port a number.
I strongly suggest that you read the Prepaid thread and specific $30 month thread before trying it out. There are some asterisks and fine print when it comes to prepaid. I personally am running this plan and love it. I just recommend you know what you're getting into before signing up.

Remember the cdma version seems to have the problems while the GSM version really doesn't. So if you're going for T-Mobile then you don't have too much to worry about.

You don't get roaming, you don't get good customer service, you don't get free nights/weekends/mobile to mobile minutes, your service shuts off on the 30th day of your service if you don't refill. Things like that.
That being said its still the best deal in wireless if you don't need many minutes. I mean I still use it . The pros heavily outweigh the cons.

Congrats, you won't regret it, awesome device I'm one of the people that likes this phone. Best damn device I ever held in my hands, once you root it and start flashing (If you're into that), you'll see that the experience will be even better. Enjoy.
If you want you can also try getting the SIM at your local T-Mobile store, to avoid waiting for shipping(I'm sure you'll get the Gnex quicker), rep should give you one. I would anyway..
Thanks everyone. Do you guys use a case/screen protector on yours? Or just never let it out of your hands?
It has curved glass so do screen protectors work as well?

Personal preference really, there's a bunch of threads around with in depth info regarding SP's and Cases.
Wet apps will always have the best edge cover, but usually might have a minimal orange peel (not all cases). Dry apps on a good quality SP will be crystal clear but might not adhere all the way on edges. My 2cents with personal experience...

I use a zagg screen protector and that's it. I feel the cases take away from it design too much. I bought my GSM gnex back in November from the UK (had it shipped international to the US) and I cannot complain about one thing. Screen has been perfect . This is absolutely the best android phone ive ever used by far. You will not regret your purchase in the least bit. Have fun with it, and welcome to the family!

Does anyone have a comparison of the HTC one and the note 3? I would love to know as I might be switching. It won't be my first Samsung I had the s2, s3, note2. The only thing I did not like about the note 2 was the screen resolution but since this is a 1080p display it should look awesome.

I was deciding between this and the LG g2, went with g2. Both phones are very good however. I'm coming from the note 2.

You can see in my signature I had the S4, Htc One and the LG G2, as far as the latter two devices ask me anything you want. The only two things I loved about the One was the look and feel of it and I liked the Sense UI with Blinkfeed. The G2 was a really cool phone, the knock knock feature is sorely missed after getting used to it for 2 weeks. The rear buttons are not too bad but it really is simpler and easier to have them where Samsung puts them, btw the One power button is a pain in the butt and there being only two buttons instead of 3 down below was just stupid.
So I really liked the G2 but in the end I had to return it because when wearing my polarized sunglasses the screen was impossible to see, also in certain ligt and angles I could see a grid of dots all along the screen. Lastly there was too much lag both playing games and simply scrolling around in settings. SO I revise my list to the Note 3 is number one, the Htc One number 2 and the G2 would be my 3rd choice, now if the Sony Z Ultra were out it would most likely be 2nd choice since it has no flash and if the One Max were available then it might just be first but its not.
Lastly G2 will likely see updates a year after the Note 3 and development will be much slower but most of its problems for most users can't be addressed by development, either you like the button placment or not, either you like on screen navigation controls or you don't and either you wear polarized sunglasses and use your phone while doing so at certain angles or you don't lol.
Me I like to use a phone with stock launchers and the features that the maker put on it otherwise might as well just buy the Nexus device of the year or Google editions, if a phone needs a replacement launcher and an ASOP rom just to be tolerable then whats the point?

Note 3.
The G Pro compares better against the Note 2 not the 3, aside from having a higher pixel count and same resolution it is inferior in every other way. Every edge it had on the Note 2 it no longer has on the 3 and the new Note only compounds its advantage with newer internals, higher specs, looks, camera, etc.

You can have it credited to the account and thus, not have a bill till it is all used up or have it credited towards the price of the phone and lowering your monthly payment for the phone. That is what I intend to do and in a couple of months pay off the balance on the phone and go back to my TMobile $30.00/month prepaid plans that gives me 100 talk mins, unlimited texts and 5.0gb of data.

i dont kno, $730 for a phone is still too steep. i think ill wait december when the note 3's price drops to im hoping $500.. i remember when the S3 was selling for $630 last yr when it came out.. 2 months later, the price fell and i got one used for $450.

I'm a note 1, 2, and 3 user. This phone (even unrooted) just blows me away everyday. I'm very much looking forward to root and know it will happen soon. BUT, in my alcohol enhanced state, I just wanted to give some love to an amazing piece of technology. Samsung. You did well.

I second this, but with slightly less alcohol.....
Seriously though, this is Samsungs best phone so fare. I'm a long time iPhone junkie and do love my 6, but this Note 4 is quickly becoming my go to device for all media consumption
Agreed. I'm pretty much like running stock. With root I would like to increase head phone and speaker volume just a little. Plus kill some bloat. Otherwise quite happier than I was on previous devices.

Is there a way to improve the clarity when rooted? On speaker, mine is much louder than even my tweaked note 3 and pretty much the same or better than my old note 2 (God rest it's soul). If I crank it to much with headsets, it distorts.
This phone doesn't have root guys and, quite frankly, functions incredibly well right out of the box. It's the first Android I have had that has not given me an overwhelming desire to tweak. If root comes.. Cool. If not, equally cool.

I consider the notes a premium device...I mean I've been a note lover since the 2.
but.....
my note 4 is sitting on my desk collecting dust. I have a one plus one, and I LOVE it. I gave it (the one plus) a week to try things out, and just...damn its a good phone. Not to mention there is NO sweat in rooting it. I cant really even run root with my email apps, and the MDM app that is also necessary, but its so easy to root - install my apps, adaway, etc, and then unroot it and we're all good w/ MDM..
I cant believe I'm paying monthly for this thing and it's just sitting here. Not to mention in preference for a phone at less than half the cost.
I looked at the one plus, but got the Note 4 free so I took it. BEST decision I could ever make, even without root. I love this phone. I have all 4 Notes, and an S5, it's rooted, stock, but rooted. The 4 is by far the best one yet. There is but one reason I want root, SD writing, but LolliPop is said to fix that soo...

Me and you must be opposites lol. I literally JUST sold my oneplus one on ebay after buying a Note Edge (pretty much a note 4)
I definitely agree the oneplus was crazy easy to root and customize.... hell I never even flashed a rom because with root stock you had so much control (I'm usually a Crack flasher).
And yeah the note 4 its locked down But hey... now I have something to look forward to... in the future I'm sure someone will find a loophole in the ATT note 4/edge bootloader security.

I agree, phones are a peculiar beast. I too have not yet re-rommed it yet because I'm satisfied with CM11.
When I got my note 4, I considered an Edge. I had my mind set on it....but when I got to the store and started looking around I buckled and got the standard 4. Of course, they didnt have them in stock either, so that helped lol. Now in the days of tempered glass screen protectors, a phone that doesnt have/cant have one, is a big gap for me.

Paid for it with ATT Next....so I'm paying for it for like 24 months.
It's not a low supply phone like the nexus 6 I had for a short period. I bought that on Next, didnt like it, sold it for cash and paid off Next. I lost a net of $5 between the phone, tax, case, and screen protector. I did OK.
If I sold my note on craislist or swappa, id get what...MAYBE 6-700 bucks...so I'm losing a few hundred, plus tax, and likely not get reimbursed for the cases and screen protector.
I think people should have root access, but I agree with the OP. This is a great phone. I've rooted almost every device and have no urge to root my N4.

I tend to agree...I rooted my OPO and then unrooted it after installing adaway. I have email and MDM and my company will reject my device if its rooted.
However, with the note 4, along with adaway, I want wanamxposed and xposed as well. I HATE the carrier bit in the status bar. With touchwiz and the crappy DPI, you barely have any notification bar real estate as it is......add in the stupid AT&T or AT&T MICROCELL, and I lose the whole thing. Wanam helps clean that junk up. After that, I can nix the root.

Nobody ever found a way to crack the s5, or Note 3, so the Note 4 won't be an exception. Especially now since Hascode is gone.

I had read on here a while back that he wasn't doing any more development for recoveries or bootloaders. Maybe I'm wrong?

Bummer. I hope you're wrong, but I have no evidence to suggest that to be the case. I've been in the HTC world for a little while...

How many considering returning it back to Verizon?

We know that Verizon has gimped this device. We know Verizon has sold app space on our device storage to the highest bidder. Yes we could disable apps and get around a lot of things. But Verizon has literally treated as FOOLS. Is it all worth it?
We have a 14 day return policy. In my case I have 90 days thru Costco (I believe).
How many if you are seriously considering returning it?
I have until Friday Sept 2nd for my 14 days.
It's amazing how much I had enjoyed the OP3. Now I'm seriously considering throwing the phone back in Verizon's face (figuratively of course).
How many of you are considering returning?
Why return when you can Odin TMO or AT&T firmware since the hardware is the same for all carriers? The only feature I wanted was Samsung cloud and that is now doable and working for me. BThe rest of the features disabled are minimal IMHO.

I bought the device thru Verizon at Costco. If I terminate the line with Verizon I have to give the device back or pay it off.

Understood. Was just trying to provide an option otherwise. [emoji4]

Will it work on Verizon if I flash tmo or sprint thru Odin?

No, they don't support the same bands I believe. Unless someone finds a way to enable them, you could always go with the N930U when it comes out.
TBH I always consider returning anything. Then the 14 days comes and goes...
Look, it's only been a week and there's already root. Even if it's a pain in the arse to do, you have it. That may be close to a record.
Compared to the Note 5 which hasn't been touched. Look how long the Note 4 took to get somewhere.
We could only hope for a way to unlock the bootloader.
But until then, at least there is a way to root the device and it's actually a bonafide root. None of this temporary stuff.
I'm sure this cross flashing stuff will get patched in a future release.
But it's always a challenge at first.
I liked the hardware and options when the S7E came out. Then as I used the phone it started pissing me off. That one I regretted keeping past the return. When I got my GearVR (finally got it in June!) I broke out my Note 5 and used it with that. Then I realized how much I missed the Note 5 and started using it again and put the S7E in a drawer.
Now that the Note 7 is here I'm finding it has the features I like in the Note 5 with the features of the S7E minus its shortcomings. (especially the over sensitive screen and edge panels!). I do wish they stuck with the 16MP sensor. HOWEVER, the camera software on the Note 7, particularly in professional mode, is superior to any Samsung device prior. Being able to adjust shutter speed while shooting video rocks!

Or flash the U firmware on the VZW when it's released like many did on the S7E.

I agree. This phone improves upon the S7E. Like you, I always buy with the intention of returning but the Note is a keeper and will be my daily driver. I'll attempt root tomorrow and see how it goes. I like the fact we can always Odin back to stock and maybe I'll try the TMO firmware since I have a TMO sim.

What were your reasons for returning?

Never.. I love this thing.. I really didn't think I would.. But even with them messing with things(i consider them like 5 year old kids that can't leave anything alone), I still like the device. And at this point, I blame Samsung.. They either don't care(which it honestly seems to me to be the case), or simply have no guts..
Either way, there are ways around most of the carrier foolishness.. And it honestly makes me laugh. This is by far the fastest root to have been achieved on a note that I can remember, and I've had all but the 5. The moor they try and lock things down, the better our developers get.. And hire all they want, as it shows, there are plenty in the waking that each generation, are better and more determined than the last.. So I say, to Verizon, who really cares about your bloat and messing.. It will be worked around anyhow..
But no, I wouldn't trade this thing for the world
from note 7
I'm debating on it because I for some reason dont get any better battery life than I do with my 6P. I did a hard reset last night and downloaded the apps manually that I use in a day and gonna try that out today and see how it works. If its still garbage it more than likely will go back

1. The software settings options Verizon had received. I thought it was funny when one of the threads mentioned the removal of ram and battery options. Some people were pissed cause it was gone and the other side was largely berating them because "programmers were better know and knew what was best to optimize the phone."
I feel that flies in the face of what so many android users want and the xda forum stands for. If I buy a phone, it's my phone, to do with as I damn well please, for better or worse.
2. My job puts my phone in some very tough and tumble situations. Quite frankly, I don't feel there's a case/screen protector combo that will keep it safe. I've previously sworn by iblaison cases, and I'm willing to bet they have survived more abuse than many of you put your phones through.
When they get the case/screen/body protector thing figured out, maybe I'll be back.
Guys... in light of the recall today AND the other issues that I've talked about.. I have returned by Galaxy Note 7. It was fun while it lasted, but the last thing I want is the phone exploding or catching fire (small chance.. but still good enough for samsung to issue a recall and stop the sales).
I returned it back to Costco and got the Moto Z Droid instead. So long guys..

True 'replacement' phone for the Note 7...

And the winner is…
The Note 9. I mean Mate 9.
http://playfuldroid.com/alleged-huawei-mate-9-and-mate-9-pro-renders-had-been-leaked/
People should have waited, instead of "rushing in". Patience is a virtue.
This phone looks identical to the Note 7.
Makes you wonder, doesn't it?
I am raving about this phone specifically because we all know the Note 7 was "the most beautiful phone that ever was". Well now, we have a possible identical "replica", yet some of the specs simply blow away all competition bar none! Insane price tag of $1300 to prove it.
(The website I linked was used to give us an impression of what to expect. By all means check out some of the more established sites, such as gsmarena for more substantial information)
To be revealed on November 3rd.
I want it! Who's with me?
Who are we? Huawei.
(World's 3rd largest Cellphone Manufacturer. Who knew, right?)
It is nice but it is not blue . Plus I have read the premium version will only be available in China.

What's wrong with Lavender?
Somewhere I read (cliche statement right there) there will be a multitude of colors to choose.
China only? Then why give us the 1300 figure in Dollars? Please why China? I am moving to China. You coming MateFreak?
LO. Sure if they waterproof it for me. After 1300 USD I will have to swim back home
Downright stupid not to make the pro version available in Europe, I'll rather wait for the note 8 then
Dudes. Please don't do the silly thing all tech websites do, like "hey! best note 7 replacements" and then show phones WITHOUT STYLUS... Each time I am forced to take the bait and realize that's its yet another big screen phone with the exact same specs as any other flagship phone. A phone without a Stylus can't replace the Note 7.
Yet no one says "no stylus no dice" and rushes out to get the V20, Pixel, iPhone, etc, etc.
This is a Note 7esque Phone, and we are on the Note 7 forum. I mean sure, go for the Note Pro 12.2, even a S7 Edge, but to think otherwise?

I totally understand this. To be honest, I am still trying to figure out why so many people got the Note7, but admit the stylus wasn't important or a thing they used. Why didn't they upgrade to the S7 Edge six months earlier. To me, the point of the Note series was the stylus once the other phones got big screens, too. There is no other phone that makes taking hours of notes easy to do and easy to reference.
I am stuck in a horrible limbo without a true replacement phone. I keep hoping someone is going to post a "I found a replacement" link that has a stylus.

Premium build, Better looking form factor, larger screen, latest tech. etc. I use my stylus, just not as much as people think you're supposed to, that's like saying "why do you have a waterproof phone if you don't go swimming?" waterproof or not, my phone will never see water. If the S8 was an exact clone of the Note 7 minus the s-pen, I'm all over it. But if it comes out looking like another rounded, pebble-shaped, bubbly piece of glass like the S7 I'll once again pass and wait for the Note 8 that i hope has the sharper corners and better overall aesthetics . I work professionally as a graphic designer and freelance digital illustrator, and STILL maybe only pull the stylus out once a week to jot down a grocery list or idea, unless you're someones personal assistant or something like that, I really don't see the s-pen never leaving your hand.
The Note isn't and hasn't ever been just about the s-pen.

The s7 edge has "sharper" edges on the screen the Note 7 are more subtle making it easier to use. The always on display on the Note 7 is MUCH more useful. These are the two biggest and most important differences to me between the Note 7 and s7 edge. I don't use the S-pen all that often but there are some situations where it's unbelievably useful.

I thought so as well but My Wife's didn't. Third party apps still do not show up on her AOD. I have cleared cache and it did not help.

My wife's AOD in her s7 edge is practically useless. Basically just a clock.
My hope is that the note 5 gets the AOD when it gets the Nougat update. I just purchased a note 5 to use till the next note comes out.
I'm considering Pixel XL with Project FI. It's a downgrade for sure, but It's a fastest android phone and from Google. And Project FI is only available on Google phones - basically, unlimited text/talk plus some data, best coverage in the US and possibly the world for only $25 a month.
What do you think?

Its no way as useful even with the update.
It won't show you calendar appointments and tasks like it does on Note 7. Other SPen related features like pinning hand written notes on the AOD screen are amazing useful and convenient. These could never come to the S7 Edge.
