Can't Mount /system! during backup - Desire 816 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all.
I have a new issue. I'm close to restoring my htc 816 desire, but when I do a CWM backup it gets stuck:
Checking MD5 sums....
Erasing boot before restore....
Restoring boot image....
Restoring system....
Can't mount /system!
Does anyone know a way to get around not being able to mount /system.

Flash stock recovery, wipe /system there. Then reflash cwm.

Hey foxy, thanks for the advice.
I'm not sure if I can find the stock recovery though. Are you sure it needs to be stock? Can I just have any cwm recovery and format the /system in it?
Edit: Alternately, would the stock recovery be the one inside the cwm backup?

Does anyone know whether I need the stock recovery to format /system? Even with CWM Recovery it should just wipe the OS no? And there's no OS on there currently so it shouldn't affect my ability to boot into cwm or fastboot?

Well before performing a restore you should wipe all partitions. But I had assumed you already tried that. So if that doesnt work, you need to flash the stock recovery, which can be found here. Wipe /system there.
If you don't know how to flash a recovery, google it.
And no the stock recovery isn't inside the backup.

Pardon my ignorance, still learning it all. When you say wipe all partitions, are you saying wipe /data, /cache, /radio and so on? The previous time I tried to recover it was getting stuck at checking md5 sums which I solved by wiping the cache.
EDIT: NEVERMIND, googled my partition question. All good

Okay, how do i wipe any partitions in stock recovery? All I get is a phone symbol with a red triangle and excalamation mark on it.

Thanks, I couldn't find that you needed to hold down the volume up button and tap power to get the blue menu thing. Only found it on HTC One forums :S.

It seems like whenever I can mount /system, my recovery will crash after a few actions are performed . And it doesn't crash when I can't mount /system. I've tried wiping the partitions, not sure what else I can do unless changing to TWRP would fix anything, don't know if it would though.
Anyone got an idea of how I can get around /system being a pain? I'm almost out of ideas. I don't get it, the internal sd card isn't broken because I can push files to it, but I can't mount /system even after formatting it
Also: Stock recovery only gave me the option of wiping data and cache, not system.

Hey bud, I might need your help a bit further
1: I don't think the cwm restore I was using is the correct one because /system won't mount at all when I try to install it.
2: I tried installing this instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2712315 . I flashed the boot.img that comes in the rom download, not the seperate boot.img listed because I can't download it from that chinese site, and then installed the rom and it installs fully but boots back into HTC logo and doesn't progress.
3: Could I fix my issues with an OTA update? I now know how to install them using stock recovery, but I don't have the OTA update on my phones internal memory. Is there a manual download?

816x dual sim international version. As far as I can tell, it's /system causing problems. If it mounts, my recovery crashes after I select a few things, when I can't mount it the recovery won't crash. If I flash twrp or Philz recovery it crashes after i select one thing :/. I'm confused as to whether it's a fixable software issue or a hardware issue, because right now I cannot boot into any rom.

I took a look at the log file when installing the following rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2712315, the concerning things I found are:

Is this normal since I have no OS currently, or should it be setting permissions in the system files it should have written?
Interestingly the end of the log ends: "Installer Sucessfull (Status 0)", so I thought that would mean it's all okay.
The only other thing that is probably holding me back from booting into the rom after it's "succesfully installed" is that I can't download the damn boot.img from this link: http://pan.baidu.com/s/1sj0LRRZ , but I'm still concerned about the /system playing up.

DHD Not taking large roms

Help !
I’m having strange issues with my DHD – Every time I try loading Android Rev. 6.1.5 or LeeDroid v4.0 my phone just hangs at the White HTC Screen…
I tried loading both Roms with Rom Manager and 4EXT – But seems to make no difference…
Even stranger if I load a small rom such as Miui or CM7 they both install ok!
Before you ask if the file is corrupt i did MD5 checks on both Andoird Rev. and LeeDroid after download and they pass!
Looking through my SD card I found the recovery log from trying to install Adriod Rev. Not being used to this Op sys. I was hoping someone could shed some light on these errors for me ?

[Q] copy build.prop failed: out of memory

in Terminal emulator I am trying:
su
mount -o rw,remount /system
cp /mnt/sdcard/build.prop /system/
but I get: cp: can't create '/system/build.prop': Out of memory
any help is GREATLY appreciated. Currently build.prop is MISSING in /system/ (i've searched xda and google for the past 2 hours...)
EDIT: I get the same error from adb:
adb remount
adb push build.prop /system/
failed to copy 'build.prop' to '/system//build.prop': Out of memory
side question: what happens when build.prop is missing, and phone reboots...?
try it in recovery
or much simply just reflash the rom..no wipe is necessary.

anyone knows what happens if it reboots with empty (or missing) build.prop?

[Q] Wiped /sdcard and /system - only have CWM now. How can I proceed?

I had an older custom ROM and CWM 6.0.10 and I wanted to update to a newer 4.4 ROM (Omni) so I booted into recovery and proceeded to do a factory reset along with a format of /sdcard and /system. Now when I reboot, I enter recovery automatically.
I managed to push the ROM .zip to the phone using "adb push ROM.zip /sdcard/ROM.zip". The problem is that when I try to install from zip (withing CWM) the install fails with this message:
SymlinkingApplyParsedPerms: removexattr of /system/addon.d/50-hosts.sh to 0 failed: Operation not supported on transport endpoint
script aborted: set_metadata_recursive: some changes failed
set_metadata_recursive: some changes failed
E:Error in /sdcard/omni-4.4.4-20140825-maguro-FML.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted
I'm stuck here and I'm guessing that I shouldn't have formatted /sdcard and /system as the directory "/0" that the error message refers to isn't on /sdcard anymore (it used to be). Not sure what to do at this point.
I've tried flashing TWRP, but fastboot waits forever with a "<waiting for device>". I thought TWRP might let me sideload the ROM (I was thinking that this manner of installing might create some default partitions on the SD card, as needed.
I welcome any suggestions. BTW, this is all on a Galaxy Nexus GSM

[Nexus Player Root][LMY47D][5.1.0] root-boot - 03|26|2015

I am not responsible for whatever may happen to you or your device when using this, Run this at your own risk!!
Requires unlocked bootloader!
Based on SuperSU - v4.46 (the binary updates from within the app later on)
I put together root installer script that comes with SU-binary/App with a insecure boot.img, everything is done over adb shell since we don't have a recovery right now but i will be working on it and already booted CWM
For current firmware:
LMY47D - root-boot
For past firmware:
LRX21V - root-boot
For past firmware:
LRX21M - root-boot
crappy video but simple demonstration :good:How to install:
Download the zip depending on your Nexus Player's firmware than extract & run root-boot.bat (Other operating system support coming soon for the installer script) Made on windows 7
Follow and read the on screen instruction carefully

SU app and binarys gets installed to /system/* directory's, The insecure boot.img gets installed to be able to access root adb shell and install those binarys
The root-boot boot.img is temporarily booted once during this process on the first boot of installation, it does not flash the boot.img
The previous boot.img before the installation is restored after SU is installed

Troubleshooting:
Check to make sure your device gets picked up in adb before running the script - - - ADB Drivers
This tool uses an unlocked bootloader and i have not unlocked mine yet, does unlocking the bootloader wipe the device? - - - Yes unlocking the bootloader will wipe the device
After fastboot flashed the boot.img than rebooted to the home screen i continued the the script like the installation steps said but it returned "device not found" - - - As long as it shows transferring files a few seconds after than its fine, adb restarts at that moment which will than return "device not found" than it reconnects and transfers. if fastboot flashed than rebooted fine than adb shouldn't have an issue
Help! Something went wrong and im bootlooping but i dont want to loose all my saved data - - - Everything is fine, Download the factory zip from here for your android version than extract the zip and retrieve the system.img and copy it into a folder that contains adb/fastboot and boot your device into fastboot mode and do "fastboot flash system system.img" doing it this way wont wipe your "/data" partition leaving everything intact but will restore the system back to its defaults
(If you were to run the factory zip as an update than it would format everything)
I installed SU with this method but cant use adb commands on my device - - - Go into "Settings>About" and click on "Build" 7 times very fast and it will enable "Developer options" in the settings menu, Go back to the settings menu and open developer options (You may need to reboot if it doesnt show up immediately) and enable the "USB debugging" option
Ill be updating this as new version of lollipop get released
support for both firmwares are up, any issues let me know i tested them both though and everything looked okay
Reuploading, had a minor issue
Edit: LRX21M link back up, let me know if there's any issues

Since running the script everything seems all good except for using voice search. Anybody else having issues where voice search just closes?
Update: Erased and manually flashed the V firmware as I was on M and now it appears to be working correctly, not sure if this is going to be a problem with people stuck on M for now but you may want to think of upgrading your fimware.

Alright so I just got around to running the script, and none of the commands work after booting back up. There's a failure for every rmdir and mkdir command that's used, so the device doesn't get rooted. I tried doing a adb remount, but the device isn't allowing that.

The first time around I got into the bootloop so I had to start over. Second time and it worked now it seems that I can't get apps to install through the adb install command. I'm mainly trying to get es file explorer and stick mount so I can use an external flash drive. Is it possible that the root method somehow nuked this functionality? I've already restarted the adb server numerous times, rebooted the player, turned debugging off and back on, etc. Even after all that it just sits after displaying the transfer rate and never finishes.
Edit: Nevermind. Looks like this issue also goes back to having to do adb root and adb remount. Gotta do it for everything apparently

Weird, windows 8?

[Fixed] FireTV Stick 2nd Gen (tank) stuck on logo. Potentially broken file system/partitions. (Unlocked + TWRP available)

Hey folks! I unlocked my FireTV stick and was able to install TWRP following the amazing guide by @k4y0z (https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/unlock-root-twrp-unbrick-fire-tv-stick-2nd-gen-tank.3907002/).
I can boot into TWRP just OK.
I am using adb shell to issue TWRP commands. (I don't have an OTG cable with power input).
I began by flashing stock ROMs by @0815hoffi from here (https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...-7-ota-zip-launcher-replacement-root.4155489/).
Then I tried installing pre-rooted images by @rbox (https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/fire-tv-stick-2-tank-prerooted-stock-images-5-2-7-3_r1.3912271/) along with magisk.
Here are the general steps I followed while flashing these images :
1. wiping everything. I suspect my first issue here :
Code:

4. `adb shell reboot`
They all install just OK. But in all cases, every time I do `reboot` in `adb shell` after `adb install` commands, it boots and gets stuck on 'fireTV Stick' logo.
At first I thought maybe it takes time to boot for first time, but I let it go for as long as half an hour and still no good.
I tried wiping cache and dalvik before rebooting too, no avail (had same could not mount /cache prompt).
I am pretty sure I am doing something stupid, I'd really appreciate any help. I'll be happy if I get it back to a working state, I do not really need root. This all started because the stick went into bootloop outta nowhere. My initial finding pointed at a failed update, see :

Maybe try with 5.2.7.7
ftvs2k-5.2.7.7
MediaFire is a simple to use free service that lets you put all your photos, documents, music, and video in a single place so you can access them anywhere and share them everywhere.

Thanks @0815hoffi , that's actually the very first image I tried with from your thread.
Looking back, I think there's something wrong with my partitions.
If I see logs of other people from these threads, it says
script succeeded: result was [ALL DONE][amonet] Install boot patch...

Whereas for me, it says

This may mean that my flash is not successful, right? It's same everytime I flash.
I wonder, is there a way to bring everything to a clean state?
Given your expertise in amonet, @k4y0z from the thread and this comment, do you have a suspicion of what could be going wrong?
It looks like like it indeed were messed up partitions. My initial plan was to flash GPT fix in DL mode (by @k4y0z : link). But I thought might as well play with few things if am anyway going to re-do everything.
I started by going deleting directories manually (e.g. `rm -rf /system`). My plan was to manually flash each partition through fastboot.
Before that I attempted
Code:
fastboot format all
and received a bunch of errors, specifically
Code:
Formatting is not supported for file system with type ''.
Though format didn't work, I decided to wipe anyway
Code:
fastboot -w
It finished with few errors, but looked like it created those directories which I deleted earlier. So I rebooted to TWRP and did
Code:
twrp wipe data
Re-flashed @0815hoffi 's image and luckily it booted into "Optimising storage" screen. Post boot-up it appears to be working OK so far. Had an issue with wifi, but restart fixed it.
tl;dr
Code:
rm -rf /cache
rm -rf /data/dalvik
rm -rf /system
fastboot format userdata # errors
fastboot -w # completed but some errors
twrp wipe data
twrp install <img.zip>
reboot
EDIT : Looks like @Sus_i and @racega went through a similar journey and ended up with a similar fix. Good to know the fix is reproducible. Here's their posts : https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...ck-2nd-gen-tank.3907002/page-61#post-83031003

Usually when this corrupted partitions happen you may try the command:
fastboot format userdata
followed by :
adb shell
(to call twrp#)
Then :
twrp wipe data
twrp wipe system
twrp wipe cache
twrp wipe dalvik
Then adb push the rom, gapps/magisk to /sdcard
twrp install nameofyourrom.zip
twrp install gappsxx.zip
Let it boot once and go back and update magisk via recovery.
(adb reboot recovery once permissions set or use powermenu little vic apk for quickness)
Another method I found which works good with fireos is :
When faced with corrupted/encrypted partition issues and/or unable to mount/format data issues
goto advanced wipe
select change file system
change it to EXT2
it will format data and data should appear become mount
hit back and change to EXT4 Filesystem again.
Then push rom and any other zips etc to /sdcard and install in usual way.
Good you got it working

Thank you for writing this down @Bertonumber1, I am sure it'll be very helpful to people who will encounter such situation in future.

I sincerely wish I could have done this. But I don't have an OTG with power input and deliveries are closed due to the pandemic. I was issuing TWRP commands through adb. I'll keep this in mind for future!
Thanks!

Ah I see, I'm sure the twrp can be commanded to repair change file systems. However, you are correct it is much easier via otg mouse or keyboard.
