Ok, so I was hoping the screen off while charging would be fixed or implemented, depends on how you look at it, in 5.0 but it hasn't been. Debugging is enabled and screen off is set but still doesnt' do anything. I found that if you double click the button it will enable theatre mode which does turn off the screen when its charging....for about a minute then the backlight turns back on. Sure, its a black screen but its still on. I really don't need 8 hours of useless wear and tear on my watch when I'm sleeping.
Has someone found a great workaround or something so get it to stay off completely while charging?
Press thr button three times when docked ..... Will switch to theater mode and turn screen off

I've been doing this. The back light turns back on but no image on the screen.
Just double tap the side button when it's charging. Not three times. It will go pitch black.

Same here.
Even in theatre mode while charging, after a minute or so, the backlight turns on with a complete black screen. Its more evident in a complete dark room. We should report this in bug report to fix. Like u said, is useless and charging battery all night not sounds good for me and the battery life too...
The worst thing is, if you put off the watch from the charger just after backlight turning on, its continue on! Draining your battery like hell until you see and turn on the screen one time at least...dawn bug!
Just double press the side button
Yes double press not three times ....butbthis is only if theatre mode is disabled ....if its enabled 1 touch does it

I tested your solution. unfortunately it does not work for me. Even when I switched to airplane mode the screen keeps on staying back lighted black. I my opinion the screen should be off.
My android wear version is the LWX48T (5.0.1)
When the watch reaches 100%, backlight simply back on again!wtf?

OMG. I can't believe some of these people. We know what Theatre Mode is and how to enable it, that isn't the problem. After about one minute the BACKLIGHT COMES BACK ON with a black screen. It's obviously a bug, @johnomaz and I suggest we take this up in the Google support forums. People here barely read past the thread title before they think they have the answer.

Click 7 times on build in about. Then in developer settings set awake when charging to enabled - this is bug bit svreen is automatically off during charging. 100% working.
The easiest way to turn the screen off when charging is make sure the watch is still connected to your phone via blue tooth. When it is on the charger. Go into android wear on your phone. Go to settings. Click "AMBIENT MODE ON" wait till the screen dims. Then turn "AMBIENT MODE OFF" the watch screen will then turn off!!!

i think the problem is - that some users don't want to make interactions with the smartphone to get the display off while charging - like me
i tried a lot with the developer options but i didn't get it to work.
sometimes the display turns off completetly, sometimes not ...
now i use slumber again ... i hope motorola will fix this asap
Here is what I do .. works EVERY TIME I do this .. which is every night.
1) Put watch in Theater Mode
2) Put watch on charger
3) Press side button
Watch stays off until I take it off the charger, press the side button to turn the screen on, and then I turn theater mode back off for the day. Has worked every time for me since I got my watch.
There is a Free app in the Google Play app store called "slumber" that turns the face off while charging.

Hi guys,
What I need is a app to turn off and turn on (without PIN code) my cell phone on specific time.
I mean, schedule my phone to turn off at 2am and turn on at 8am, this way I would save battery during night.
Some of you may say, why don't you turn it yourself? A: Cuz this way I would schedule my phone to turn on before I wake up, in case someone calls it would wake me up.. Or in case I forget to turn it off!

Use airplane mode, buddy. It's don't drain your battery, and there's a lot of apps to schedule it for example: Timeriffic.
Airplane mode turns off all radio connectivity, so if someone calls you it will act, like your devices is turned off.

May be a dumb question, but any concerned with screen burn-in from charging? Under normal use the screen isn't lit up long enough, but while charging the screen stays lit (dimmed, yes but still lit) and with a static blue ring around the edge. Just seems odd that some kind of daydream mode isn't employed.

The screen is LCD not OLED so burn in isn't an issue.
I had it on the charger for about 2 hours last night and can clearly see the ring and the "moto" and "100%" text, especially on the gray background of the settings menu.

That's my concern. I thought that LCD wasn't impervious just because it wasn't OLED and it is still susceptible to damage.

I honestly can't figure this thing out, lol
It would appear that the last update keeps the screen on (although dim) while charging. Another change is that putting a turned off watch in the charger turns it on.
Well that solves my question. First charge was off, 2nd and current 3rd charge is staying dim. Thanks!
If you want it off when you charge, go into "Settings-->About" and tap on build number, repeatedly until it displays "You are now a developer". Then go back to "Settings-->Developer Options" and the first option is "Stay awake when charging". You can touch it to toggle between enabled and disabled.

Once we get root we'll be able to change this option in the build.prop file:
Code:
ro.ambient.force_when_docked=true
To turn off the screen while charging:
1. Open the Android Wear app
2. Turn on "Always On" (if it's not already)
3. Wait for the screen on the watch to dim
4. Uncheck "Always On" in the Android App
The screen will turn off until it's taken off the charger, screen is tapped, or button is pushed.

This worked for the LG G Watch as well. But you have to substitute "always on" with "ambient screen" with the update to 4.4w1.

Whoops. Forgot about the verbage difference in the Moto360.
Found this on reddit, looks like it answers my question. Curious to see if they had the screen left fully lit while charging.
http://www.reddit.com/r/moto360/comments/2gir11/charging_screen_image_burnin/
Tasker task I create to toggle the screen off automatically.
I've had it since Monday. Charging every night (~8 hours). Developer mode on, but no settings changed. No burn in. I think it's a defect.
I live in Toronto, and bought a Moto 360 off of Kijiji a few days ago. It's in perfect condition and everything works fine, however the watch won't seem to go into Ambient Mode.
If Ambient Mode is turned on, and I sit at any screen (let's say the homescreen), after a few seconds, the screen dims, and then 1 second later the screen goes completely off. It won't stay on, and it won't stay dimmed. It goes completely off no matter what I do.
If I turn Ambient Mode off, it waits a few seconds, then the screen turns off (without dimming for 1 second). Seems normal.
No matter what mode I'm in, if I lift my wrist or move the watch, I am unable to get the screen to turn on. The only way the screen will turn on is by tapping the screen, or pressing the button on the right side.
The movement sensor isn't broken, as it detects my steps all day just fine.
The brightness sensor isn't broken. I've set it to Auto, and it's definitely adjusting the brightness properly.
The Software version is 4.4W.1.
I called Motorola, but of course because I bought it off Kijiji in Canada, they can't help me. And of course I can't get ahold of the person who sold it to me.
I think I got screwed. Anything I can do to fix/solve it?
Got one off of Kijiji too but my ambient mode seems to work fine.
It does turn off when my arm is down or the face is tilted on its side. When the watch face is facing up, ambient mode turns on. Once its facing me, it comes fully on. Any other position and its off. I can occasionally confuse it but doing a standard viewing gesture gets it back to normal.
If you think its a defect, then I would first try doing a full reset on the thing and trying again. I wouldn't think its a hardware fault since the necessary hardware is all working. It seems like software only so a reset may help.
If all else fails, just wait until it comes out in Canada to see if warranty servicing opens up. Should be the 31st of this month.
the same problem here
---------- Post added at 02:03 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:22 PM ----------
have you solve that?
+1 with this issue.
So after messing around with a few suggestions of people who did this accidentally. I have been able to repeat it every night.
1. Put the phone on the charger with ambient mode on or off doesn't matter.
2. Go into android wear app on your phone.
3. When the watch face has dimmed on the charger switch ambient mode on,(using the phone) the screen with go bright again then it will dim. Once it has dimmed wait 5 seconds and turn ambient mode to off. The screen should now turn off on the watch.
4. If you put it on the charger with ambient mode enabled wait for it to dim, wait 5 seconds then switch ambient mode off. If the face doesn't turn off you are now able to start at step 3 so that's why it didn't matter how you started.
This is the first time I've had something to contribute, so let me know how it works for you. I'll post a video when I get home, unless someone beats me to it. My build is KGW42R if that makes a difference.
This was posted before, but thanks for the contribution.
I'm hoping they eventually put an option in the settings to auto disable display while charging.

for me, after i do this, screen turns off... but eventually in the night, the watch turns back on, i think when my phone does some kinda of check or gets a notification, the watch turns back on... so for me its useless..
Even if the screen is off all night is it safe to leave it on charge all night, especially as it is fully charged after 2 hrs? I've only had my watch since Monday so still figuring out the best practice but I've been charging it for a bit in the evening before heading off to sleep, completely turning it off and then in the morning while getting ready just putting it on the charger to a) turn on and b) charge fully.
I know in the manual it says that it has smart technology to protect it against overcharging but does it not stay hot all night on the cradle?
I would not recommend putting it on charge overnight with the back getting hot and the plastic back being crack prone

Non-issue. The back barely gets hot and even if it does just don't pull on the strap to the point that it causes pressure. Or simply take it off the charger for a minute before putting it on. It's not like its getting hot enough to melt the plastic. You can most definitely charge it overnight without a problem.
I've been doing this since I got the watch but last night after I installed the update the trick won't work. I go through the entire process and all goes like normal, but about 10 seconds after the screen shuts off, the backlight turns on. Anyone else having this issue?

I noticed that i dont have to be accurate and time 5-10 seconds after screen fades. It works anytime after the screen faded.

I actually am having this issue. I usually turn off bluetooth on my phone right away, but the watch seems to continue to turn back on with the black screen only, which happened to drain my battery and make the watch really hot. Kinda strange.
This works for me without any issue, even after the last update from yesterday.
I just put the watch on the charger, then from the phone I set the Ambient Mode to ON, then to OFF and the screen turns off.
But here is the trick that I have noticed: you MUST have no light in the room, or cover the watch screen while doing the procedure. If there is light in the room, it won't work ! I accidentally discovered this.
There is also a build.prop edit in the development forum that allows you to change a line and when the watch is put on the charger, it does it automatically.
If you don't want to root your watch and you have a rooted phone, I made an app that does the button pressing for you
So the option to turn off the Display on Charger (Developer Menu) is not fixed?
Not to my knowledge.

The app that will do the same actions
With the latest update, this method doesn't work anymore. The screen will always turn on with a black screen after a couple of seconds. I don't think I will be charging it overnight anymore and just wait to charge it in the morning while getting ready.
Wish moto would give us an option to use nightstand mode or not. Even when dimmed it's still bright while sleeping.
Can't find another question like this one... so here goes:
Just got a Moto 360 for 149.99 USD and its great so far.
Did that force update to 5.1.1, this one worked for me: https://www.reddit.com/r/moto360/comments/3ahj1l/a_surefire_way_to_force_the_511_update/
Now I look into turning off the screen when its charging, only to run into a very strange issue...
In the developer options, which you can enable using 10 taps on the build number in about, there are two options:
1) stay awake while charging
2) burn-in protection
Burn-in protection will NOT save the check when your restart, so in essence, is useless.
However I found that using stay awake while charging DOES indeed turn off the screen, but here's the catch: you have to set it to ENABLED.
Don't believe I have ever seen a setting on android that required it to be on, to be off...
But hey, it does work, on mine at least.
Also the whole "just hit the button to make the screen go off" ONLY works in Theater Mode! And I personally dont like pushing a button to check the time.
If Theater Mode is off, it will just brighten the screen for around 2 seconds, then dim again.
Here's my question, what does that burn-in protection do anyways? Just pixel shift over time? Why can't it be enabled?
Hope this helps some people!
that setting does nothing for me
the screen stays awake regardless of ENABLED or DISABLED
funny how motorola hasn't fixed this yet
just put watch in "Theater mode" before charging
and it would switch the screen off on charger too
