[SOLVED] Help with GPE 5.0 root/S-OFF - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello! I have a strange problem that I'm unable to resolve at the moment. I had GPe (converted with RUU) for quite some time now, and to prevent myself from messing with my phone (ex-flashaholic), I put S-ON back. Now, 5.0 OTA update came, but Sense has been bugging me for some time and I would really love to go back. Now, don't ask me how, but I managed to brick it the first time, now I installed graffixnyc ROM with root. So I have root, I installed Sunshine (which I bought some time ago), but it always says that my device has no root. It has, though, because every other app that needs root to work just works. SuperSU wants to update binary, but it fails - app hangs indefinitely.
I tried older SuperSU versions which helped some people to update binaries, but the phone doesn't boot. I can't delete root because with it just reappears with reboot (rooted ROM). So what can I do in this situation? Did anybody S-OFF 5.0 Android? Or should I just wait for Sunshine update? I would just like to return my device to any kind of offical form (GPe, preferably Sense). I'm really disappointed in myself this time. ^^
So, thank you very much for any suggestions or help!
PS: HTC One M8 unlocked, international version.

Being a flashaholic you should be familiar with flashing SuperSU with your custom recovery if the in app update don't work
I flash SuperSU after flashing every ROM even if it says its rooted

I'm in a similar position. Bought a "converted" M8 gpe. For some reason they put it back on S-ON before they sold it. Sunshine won't S-OFF a gpe device. I'm stuck too.

Sunshine will pull through for all and it's always Worth the cost

this is a twrp backup of MaximusHD 7.0.0 (credits to LlabTooFeR) trimmed down to fit on a GPE system partition.
download the file, extract it (using winrar / unrar / etc.) and place the resulting folder: MaximusHD_M8_7.0.0_minimal
in /ext_sd/TWRP/BACKUPS/<your serial number>/
then go to TWRP restore and restore this backup, boot it up (may take a bit of time), and you'll probably get some FC too, but sunshine worked just fine yesterday with this ROM on a GPE converted phone S-ON (with 2.xx firmware), to achieve S-OFF!!
PS: make a nandroid backup of your current setup, in case you need to restore it
Lemme know how it goes

Wow thanks a lot. I'll have a play with this, this afternoon.

@Joplisan @james3833
can you also let me know which firmware version you are on (from a fastboot getvar all, the hboot and version-main, and date of bootloader), so we can keep track for which [GPE] versions this ROM and sunshine works

Yea, I know, but back when I was flashing like crazy, I had a Nexus, and there was always a way out of the mess. It was very easy.

good to hear
so confirmed working for converted GPE phones, gone back S-ON (never go S-ON once you have S-OFF)
on 2.12.1700.x and 3.11.1700.5
and if you could also edit the main thread title to include [SOLVED] (go to 1st post click EDIT, at the bottom of the edit window click GO ADVANCED, then you can edit the main title), thanks

I have found it's quite finicky too. Last night i just removed the sim card (and put it back) and had to RUU back to stock, from stuck in a boot loop. Reflashed just the firmware but had no Wifi. This thing is frustrating at times
It seems the partition structure is very fragile compared to the M7

Right it all worked. Restored the backup in twrp. Installed sunshine in the new sense ROM, which gave me S-OFF. Now I can flash a lollipop ROM and firmware.
Oh and the getvar details are https://docs.google.com/a/coolsmar...egZawT5bTZOYW0tUzUwd1E/edit?usp=docslist_api

I was part of this experiment, and now I'm happy again with S-OFF

indeed you were the first :good:
then Joplisan also showed up just a few minutes after i posted, though he didnt get any FC by the way.
you also left in a bit of a hurry, before i could tell you the RUU you were using was for a different MID ... so either use an RUU for your MID, or (if they are compatible, edit the android-info.txt file)

How do I remove apps for good?

Hi, first post in a long while.
I've got myself the HTC One M8 on contract with EE (Orange/T Mobile convergence here in the UK), after having it for a few weeks I've really got to the point where I want to mod it, remove apps and the like. So I went through the ballache that is the non root way of backing it up, HTCDev unlocked the bootloader and attempted to root it. Root doesn't stick it seems. I can't get S-off as I get the Whelp error. Sunshine says nope.
I've tried to extract the backups and mod them before restoring and they're either multipart tar archives that 7zip refuses to fully extract or with TWRP, the folders show up as files?!.
Reflashing to ARHD gives me a white screen with red text telling me it's internal software and shouldn't be public.
How do I gain control of my device? I'm fed up with having freaking kid mode on my power menu. I don't want Deezer on my phone.
Please, for the love of any deity that may or may not exist, please help me!
So no one knows how to get rw access on 4.4.3?

I would try to get root working 100% first of all, as it sounds like something isnt right. I know you're not s-off but that should not stop you from unlocking your bootloader (which you appear to have done alright) and having root. Which guide did you follow to get where you are? Have you flashed SuperSU from recovery, did you check with a rootchecker app?
When did you try sunshine? Before you had made any modifications? I would have thought sunshine would have worked ok, it seems it requires a device running stock to run properly though, so I would use it before changing/flashing anything else.

Here's what I've done so far,
I downloaded the toolkit, used that once I had unlocked the bootloader, flashed a recovery (can't remember which one now), made a backup (multipart tars), flashed the root zip, tried to remove apps and realised I don't have RW access even with root, chmod in FX Explorer didn't take with an access denied. Got fed up, attempted to flash ARHD 11.1 as I used it on my old Sensation, didn't work (sat there for 20 minutes with red text telling me it's confidential), investigated to no avail how to extract the tars from the backup, tried Firewater and got several Whelps in a row (screen goes off just before the Whelp, like it wants to reboot but doesn't). Got the nope from firewater twice, reflashed the recovery to TWRP, tried to extract that (got errors on the APK directories, folders showed up as files). Got annoyed again and posted here.
I had ORD from my Sensation for a long time, almost weekly I was trying out new ROMs, but this is just deflatingly humiliating as I don't have the foggiest to get RW access. And what's worse is I don't know who I should complain to, HTC or EE for making it as watertight as a ducks bum.
Hopefuly this should shine some light on what to do next.

Getting your software numbers from the OS will do. But that's only needed now if you are on your original stock rom. Custom roms are usually based on .401 wwe versions so that could lead to wrong info !

Very strange, I can understand firewater not working as its seems to only work on pre-4.4.3 firmware, so sunshine should really work (its the one that costs $25). Its up to the individual whether they want to go down the sunshine route or not, but it seems going fully s-off is the best way to go to make sure you don't have any problems flashing etc. I found this on the Sensation also.
I s-off'd my sensation and the process seemed ridiculously dodgy and involved hooking up to a pc to run a program, whilst using a thin piece of wire on the back of the phone. Essentially it tricked the phone into thinking it was going into a certain service mode so an exploit could be ran to gain s-off.
Sunshine s off:

I never did S-off my Sensation and it did everything I wanted it to do. I had 4EXT on there with some strange flashing mode that seemed to make it work.
I've noticed dumlock on TWRP. Would that work for flashing the SU zip?
Your firmware definitely supports the latest roms. Try some custom roms. Easiest way to get it working. Maxumus HD is also a "stock" rom. Maybe that's worth a shot. And with the stock recovery it also works to get s-off via sunshine.

When I tried ARHD, all I got was a white screen and some red text like it was refusing to boot. What do I do if it happens? Dumlock? I always do a cache/dalvik wipe so it's not that.
When you install a custom rom you always need to perform a full wipe before installing it !

It could be that, it's been months since I've played with ROMS as I stuck with CM on the Sensation since the release of the M8 as I knew I was going to upgrade to it.

I get the red text stratight after rebooting it Power and volume to do a battery disconnect. It seems to flash okay, sometimes it crashes and turns offafter exiting AROMA, other times it takes me back to TWRP. I just tried to reflash with Dumlock, no difference.
Turn off screen timeout option in the recovery. You got a pic from the bootloader and the red text

I don't have a 2nd phone to take a picture on. I doubt the screen timeout will do much as I can unlock it and when it comes back to recovery it works fine. But I'll try both of those suggestions when I get home in 5ish hours.
Thank you for your help so far, both of you. Much appreciated

Rooted, ROM'd, and wondering!

I've just finished rooting and installed a custom ROM on my device, but now I'm looking into S-Off. My question is, how?
I did this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2706391
and now I don't have Wi-Fi, which apparently means that my firmware needs to be updated.
How, exactly, does one do that when you're no longer on the service provider it was on?
I'm on T-Mobile now, it was on AT&T. The phone is an AT&T HTC One M8.
I've got the files for Firewater, but I'm not 100% sure how to go about it, other than following tutorials I've found. Anyway, if someone could assist me in this search, it would be greatly appreciated.
Chances are firewater is not going to work, you'll need to use Sunshine S-off (pay 25$), S-off jas nothing to do with carrier
Sunshine: http://theroot.ninja
Firewater instructions: http://firewater-soff.com/instructions/
If I try Firewater, is there a chance to royally mess up my work? I.E. brick me, or will it error out beforehand?
firewater does NOT work. and will never work again. You can own the files but they won't work as it has has to establish a connection to the s-off server which is offline. sunshine is the one and only way. you can read that in the s-off thread here on xda and on their website !
and also questions belong in the Q&A section so please use that board the next time instead of the general subforum.
good luck with sunshine

that will let you flash some roms here, not all
You'll have to relock your bootloader to flash it - fastboot oem lock -
and when your finished updateing unlock the bootloader and flash TWRP and root

Ah, see, this is the info that I couldn't find at all. I had no idea it was server-related, so it wouldn't work. I thought all the files were local, that's why I was investigating. Well, as long as Sunshine will work and not mess anything up, I guess that's what I'm going to have to do. Even though there's another ROM on my phone, I should still be able to use Sunshine and get the firmware updated without any issues, yeah? I would just like to get confirmation from someone who knows my exact situation and not search the forums to a situation "Similar" to mine and eff up my phone.

S-OFF means do as you like, change firmwares, convert to GPE and back to sense. S-OFF is freedom
Okay, here's where I'm at, if anyone would inform me in the direction I should take...
I've unlocked the bootloader, flashed a ROM, and rooted. Wi-Fi doesn't work because I need the newer firmware on the device.
In order to get the newer firmware, I need to have S-Off. I don't. Sunshine doesn't work because the ROM I have flashed is a 5.0.1 version.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2706391 If it helps.
Can I go digging to find a KitKat-based ROM and see if Sunshine will work then, or do I need to go through the BS to flash stock everything on my phone and THEN run Sunshine? I'd really like some advice before I royally mess something up.
Thanks in advance!
Edit: I found this and it looks like something that might work. Flash InsertCoin, download and pay for Sunshine, S-Off, flash firmware, go back to SkyDragon?

Forgive me for asking, but I've searched... Where is this rooted stock one you're talking about?
All right, I've flashed back to as stock as I can find, but it's still not allowing Sunshine to be installed.
However, I've stumbled upon something saying that if the Recovery is fastboot booted, it acts as though the device is S-Off? If I run the recovery in such a manner, could I possibly flash a new Firmware on there like that?

I flashed that ROM you showed me, Alex, and then used Sunshine to S-Off my M8. That worked. I paid for it, all is well.
Flashed the Viper ROM, but didn't have Wi-Fi. So, I went back to SkyDragon, same thing.
I flashed firmware 4.28.401.9 (I think. I did typed that from memory..) but I still have no Wi-Fi.
I'm going to try to flash the GPE firmware now. I'll edit once I get it up and running!
Thanks so much guys! I really appreciate your help!

If your wifi isn't working with ViperOne, then the firmware didn't flash correctly. Go to your bootloader/hboot and check the readout there. What it says under OS is your firmware version. If it is blank it is because of your recovery. TWRP 2.8.0.3 is recommended. You can also tell by the hboot number. 3.19 = 4.4.4 firmware

That's awesome to know. I literally just flashed the GPE firmware, and I think I partitioned properly. (no errors while installing) It's currently doing the first boot.
Flashing that GPE firmware was nerve-racking. It went sooo slow. Here's hoping it goes through! UPDATES TO COME! I'm excited.
UPDATE:
HOLY HNNNNNNNNNNNNNG IT WORKED.
Good LORD I CAN FINALLY DOWNLOAD MY UPDATES.
Please excuse the caps, I'm effing excited right now. THANKS SO MUCH EVERYONE.
Nice that you have it working.. Don't forget.. If you want to go back to sense you need the sense firmware.. As the partitions are a bit different.. Btw I'm very happy ? with gpe 5

Right at this point, I don't care to go back to Sense firmware. I'm spoiled by the bright look of SkyDragon, so this is where I'm staying!

On demo mode - need stock TWRP backup

hi together.
i got my m9 rooted and deleted all demo.apk but im unable to enter security settings or perform a factory reset from system.. and there are many demo contacts and entries in calendar :silly:
can anyone share his (rooted/non rooted) twrp backup with me? im on 1.32.401.6 CID HTC_002
thanx for helping..
Copy and paste job......
I get demo devices through my employer, every single HTC ROM out there inclues demoflow, the device it's self is essentialy a generic unit with an alternate CID, the demo installation and launch is triggered by CID HTC_002, the most effective way to get rid of demoflo and make the device 100% generic, is to S-Off and supercid! (11111111)
Once you are supercid you can flash any ruu and you will still have a 100% generic device, OTA updates and all... Demo won't even install.
The alternative method would be to simply remove /system/etc/.demoflo and /system/priv-app/DemoFlowInstaller
This will break ota and carrying the 002 cid will bring demoflo back when you flash any HTC ruu.
My M9 came as a demo unit, I modified the supersu installer to do the work for me as S-off isn't yet available... Htc dev unlock - twrp & flash the modified supersu zip.. once again breaking ota but I have an ruu on standby..
Feel free to shout if you need assistance.
Thanks
Lee
if you have removed demo the locks will still be in place, you will need to full wipe from TWRP.

[SOLVED] T-Mobile M8 Stuck In Recovery With ReLocked Bootloader and No ROM!

The title basically says it all but I'll describe what I did so hopefully you guys can help.
Today I got tired of the ROM I was running and I figured I'd update my firmware before I flashed a new one just cause I hadn't done it in months. So I went and followed this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2696282
I used this firmware: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=32788
My CID is T-MOB010 just like the firmware's and I thought it would be a pretty simple thing, so I got to work.
First I rebooted to fastboot USB and did fastboot getvar all to make sure everything lined up, then I relocked the bootloader and did fastboot oem rebootRUU, all successfully.
Then I flashed the firmware and it all went great but I forgot to flash it a second time. I'm not sure if it's required, but anyway...
After it flashed successfully I did a fastboot reboot and my phone tried to reboot but it stalled on the white HTC splash screen, then went black, then the splash screen returned, then black, then it went into the stock recovery.
The stock recovery functions just fine and I attempted to just clear the cache and reboot but it did the exact same thing.
I don't currently have a stock Nandroid or RUU on my phone and I'm not even sure I have a way to get one on there besides using someone else's phone to put one on my SD.
Can anyone help me out? Is it even possible to get out of this? My bootloader is relocked and my phone can't get S-OFF (tried awhile ago multiple times). As of now I am all out of ideas/experience so I'm hoping you guys can help me. Thank you!!
UPDATE: I got myself into the HBOOT so I think I should be good now but I'll keep this around just in case.
Update: Once I got into hboot all was well, I just flashed TWRP again and got it going. Thanks everyone for the help!
Did you get it going again?

Just use the official RUU.exe which runs from a PC (with phone connected), not from the phone.
http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8-t-mobile/news/
RUU will also update your firmware.
Also, the firmware you linked is not the latest. Its the Android 4.4.4 firmware. The 5.0 (Lollipop) firmware would be 4.20.531.4

Its not what your top post says, so its not clear whether you were trying to put the RUU.exe on the phone (which is incorrect), unsuccessful in putting on the phone or running an RUU.zip, or did the latter in addition to trying to run the RUU.exe from the PC (which was not originally mentioned). If the last one didn't work, it would help to have more details on failure mode, error messages, etc.

Not everyone does it, but its certainly good to do, and still done from time to time. Its helpful so folks don't click on a link, intending to help someone that doesn't need the help anymore.
Same kinda problem.
I'm stuck in bootloader.
Any key I just brings me back to this again.
Even in HBOOT selecting Recovery or Factory reset does nothing other than bring up this screen.
Powering down and then on again has the same result.
I was trying to get back to stock. Typed in fastboot oem lock and after that... the problem started!!
Any ideas??

This is intentional. When you relock the bootloader, it renders the phone unbootable and expects the RUU to be run.

You shouldn't be assuming what RUU to run. What is your CID and hboot number? What RUU did you try to run?
HBOOT is 3.19.0.0000 CID, can't find.
RUU is M8_4.16.401.10_Europe.exe

The OS number (3.32.206.9) shown on your hboot screen (pic in your top post) indicates that is not the right RUU. The number in the x.xx.206.x is carrier specific, and seems to indicate that your phone is the O2 UK version. Running an RUU with version x.xx.401.x won't work. The number in the "401" spot would need to "206" for it to be the right RUU.
Not sure, but I don't think your CID has RUUs. If that is the case, your best bet it to unlock the bootloader again, flash TWRP back to the phone, and restore a nandroid with your software number (3.32.206.9) if you can find it. Then flash stock recovery back to the phone. That is as close to "stock" as you will get, if there is no RUU for your CID version.

Thanks redpoint73. Looks like that's the only way to go!!
By looking at the radio, you need the Euro Version RUU. Looks like we gotta be detectives sometimes, lol.
Ok, I've unlocked the bootloader and am back to where it was.
It's running 5.0.1, Sense 6.0 and Android Revolution HD 34.6 by mike1986
I would like to clear that off and get back to stock with OTT updates.
Revolution HD 34.6 seems to use an awful lot of data. My other M8 has stock on-board, has identical apps etc and doesn't use nearly as much data as this one!!
Any further ideas??

I would appreciate ANY help on getting back to as near as normal as possible.
Thank you.
I should add, the RUU messages are from trying post #16.

I found a nandroid backup with the same s/w number as mine, downloaded it from MEGA (it seemed to d/l ok).
When I ran it through TWRP I got signature verification failed.
This phone could end up in the depths of the river Tyne

What hack14u neglected to mention, is that to run another version's RUU, you need s-off ($25 by sunshine), and then you need to change your MID and CID.
Relocking the bootloader (to run RUU) renders the phone with no OS, this is by design.

Hang in there, modding phones can often be an exercise in frustration. But the phone is quite recoverable, as long as you perform the correct steps.
A nandroid is not a flashable zip (such as a ROM). It needs to be restored in a very different way, its described in Post 3 of the stock nandroid thread (assuming that is where you go it from) under Question & Answers.
To summarize, you need to:
1) Unpack the zipk, which is a number of folders
2) Move the folders to the proper location on the phone's internal storage (removable SD is also possible, if you setup TWRP to back and restore to that location)
The exact location if very important (its described in Post 3 of the stock nandroid thread), since when restoring a nandroid, TWRP will not see the file to restore if you have it wrong. This is in direct contrast to installing a ROM zip, in which TWRP allows you to browse anywhere on the storage to find the file to flash.
3) Choose the menu option to RESTORE, not INSTALL

Can't update firmware to Oreo.

Hey, I'm having a bit (or a **** ton) of trouble updating my firmware from Marshmallow to Oreo, and it's getting really frustrating.
I was on RR before, so I never really updated the firmware, but since Xposed for Oreo is out, I decided to update to LeeDroid. The problem is that, since LeeDroid requires the latest Oreo firmware, I had to update it (or try to), and no matter any method I've tried, it won't work. And the problem is, it doesn't even allow me to update for Nougat either.
At first I thought it was some issue with the CID (maybe I downloaded the wrong RUU), so I downloaded firmware for my CID and tried to update via both fastboot and download mode's SD card thing and neither worked. When using fastboot, it would give me "9 RU_SECURITY_FAIL" and when using SD card, it would give me "14 RU_ZIP_INFO_ERROR android-info missing or malformed" even though I checked the zip I was flashing, and the android-info text file was there (and this is Nougat firmware). Nothing is helping and it's becoming extremely frustrating.
I also tried using stock Marshmallow (which I was able to get via TWRP backup since that was the only way I could get pure stock) and tried just doing an OTA from there, but it didn't work, no update showed up.
Phone's info:
CID: HTC__J15 (which I believe is GCC).
MID: 2PS620000
Current Firmware: 1.95.401.4
S-ON
Bootloader unlocked (obviously).
I'm using Pure Fusion temporarily.
Update: I managed to go S-OFF but I still can't flash any RUUs. I can flash firmware files, but any RUU zip I've downloaded just causes some kind of error. I tried flashing some kind of stock recovery to apply an update (if that would even work) but I keep getting an error screen (the one with a phone and a red sign on its screen).
Phone's info (as of update):
CID: 11111111 (SuperCID).
MID: 2PS620000
Current Firmware: 1.95.401.4
S-OFF
Bootloader unlocked (obviously).
Update 2: Nevermind, I killed the phone and paid $25 for nothing. Yay.
You cannot just update the firmware if s-on... Thats first issue... You will need to revert to current build, flash stock recovery and take the ota's in sequence...As far as no notifications... It would be instant may take a bit

The S-ON thing I get, but with current build, I sat there with stock MM and hit check for updates like a million times and nothing came up. Aside from that, I still don't know how to go S-OFF without having to pay that $25, because that much money just seems absurd to pay.
That 25 bucks is really good investment. Trust me. Makes your life with htc 10 much easier.

Hmmmmm, well I do have the money for it, but just a question: is it safe if I know what I'm doing, flash wise? Like my phone won't get screwed up for no reason?
In my case, S-OFF app did everything itself. If you know, what you are you doing with your phone, it shoulnt get screwed.
Do some reading about S-OFF and firmware updates and so on.
Honestly, i did some reading, but Im not 100% sure what Im doing. Fortunately, my phone is still alive...

Okay, what the hell? I decided to go with S-OFF and installed the SunShine APK, then did all the tests and whatnot and paid for the license. Then the phone rebooted, but when I went into the bootloader to check, it still said "S-ON."
Try run it againg or check some thread related to Sunshine. I can remember i installed app, paid, run it, i took some time, phone rebooted couple of times... Last thing was question, what i want. S-OFF locked, S-OFF unlocked...

Try changing to Super CID, then you can flash any RUU made for the 10. You could also try an SD card-version of an RUU, "2PS6IMG.zip".
Just Google for:

You must be flashing the RUU wrong. You never needed to go S OFF and you don't need supercid either. Here is the RUU you need
https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=817550096634797504
Rename to 2PS6IMG.zip
Place on ex SD card
Boot to download mode
Press vol up to flash.
RUU will erase everything. once the RUU has flashed turn you phone back on and take the OTA.
