Sdcard edit problems - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Why can't I edit my micro sdcard with apps such as esfile manager? I even get problems deleting songs from folders using my music player. Do I need to enable something?

Are you rooted? Stock 4.4.4 does not allow 3rd party apps to write to/modify files on External SD.

Only the DE...with unlocked bootloader can be rooted right now. Only way for SD card fix that I know of is with root.

Now I wish I would have just went with the note 3

Is this why the 64gb sdcard I pulled from my gs4 active is having write issues in my note 4?

It is a bit annoying, but you learn to live with it. And anyway, this will be fixed when we get Lollipop. With Lollipop, we'll be able to set which apps have access to what folders on our SD card. So, we'll be able to set apps to have access to the entire SD Card, simply one folder, and/or everything in between. It's just one more reason to be excited about Android 5.0.

Thanks for the workaround, sure wish ES and BTsync app were allowed!

You can, but only on system apps and apps that have been updated to Lollipop's method of saving to the SD card.

This sd card crap is rediculous. I didn't have any problems with "security" on my note 3 and it was perfect. If i would have known about this BS I would have stuck with the note 3. I don't care what their reasoning was, it was stupid and they f'ed up royally. IDIOTS!
Had my note 3 rooted, all my music, vids, pics on my 64GB sdcard and organized. Had all the apps that download or save those files saving them to the download folder on my sd then I would put in the correct place. Now its basically unusable. I save stuff to it with the my files system file explore and some of the files will just dissappear after a while. Such BS!

Move all your applications into SD card with non-rooted device

Most of the android apps can be moved into the SD card , but some of the apps can not be moved. They use up the internal storage.
To move all apps into the SD card ,we just need to install an app call App Installer ,which allow you to move all apps into the SD card . And most important is that this application doesn't need root .
Procedure:
1. Download App Installer from the link
https://www.dropbox.com/s/64go1if08o389hx/AppInstaller.apk?dl=0
2. Put it into your SD card and install it on your phone.
3. After finishing installation ,open App Installer.
4. Wait for it to"check files".
Warning : Do NOT exit the app until it completes checking files.

5. Close App Installer
6. Go to settings >applications >preferred location
7. Choose removable SD card
Now it is finished. You can move all the apps from the internal storage into the SD card .You can move it in settings >applications >manage applications and move the apps to the SD card .
*This application also allows you to install apk files in your phone.

This is just App2SD with different interface. Only apps that support "Move to SD" option can be moved to SD Card. Apps like facebook/Twitter can't be moved to SD card.
Link2SD rules in all situations though it requires root, it is worth it.

You get more performance and more enjoyment out of your device whilst having root.

Thankyou for the lesson, but this only works for your model or version. my phone doesn't have them options. it is however a useful app. I can export the app(s) installer on to my external storage.
Works on LG Optimus NET (P690)
I followed the directions and it worked. The only hitch was that after moving facebook to the SD card it would always report a network connection error. Moving it back to internal memory allowed it to work again.
I un-installed it and re-installed it (defaulted to SD now) and now it's working.

I figured flashing it would make more of the 16 GB available but it didnt. I wiped everything and all the bloatware is gone. Why does it still show less than 2 GB?

I was using the stock Rom and it said 1.2 gb free of internal storage, I flashed the cyanogenmod mod nightly and wiped everything and it still shows 1.17 gb free.
As you can see nothing is using the memory.
I'm confused as to whether the 9 gb of available memory is a permanent thing, I thought it was a thing from the stock Rom with the bloatware.
I deleted a clockwork mod folder and it cleared 7gb.
I'm not sure why it took up that much space. But I'm still wondering why it only gives 9gb and not 16 on cyanogenmod

I know exactly what took up all that space, it was your many backups of your rom which you made in Rom Manager or in

Samsung's partition which is used for the rom is shared by the user memory.
You can access all of the phone including the rom partition once your phone is
rooted and you install a root capable file manager like root explorer.
There are many different ones at the play store to choose from.
But I think Root Explorer is by far the best and easiest to use.

CM10.x rom is a lot smaller than the stock rom. They are between 300MB to 400MB including GAPPS.
Stock roms are at least 1.6BGB and custom roms can range from 900MB to 1.2GB.
If you have root access which I don't know if you do, use a file manager like root explorer
and navigate to "/" which is the ROOT directory of the phone.
There you will see a 4-5 screenfulls of of folders and a lot of files in the / root directory
Most of those folders and files are various different parts of the rom on the root of the phone.
Some of the folders are simply shortcuts and virtual locations to the /sdcard and external sdcard.
To be able see all those protected root locations with the folders and files the phone must be rooted.

See the other thread you're already posting in about this. I've answered you there.
Edit: to further clarify, loading a different ROM doesn't change the partitions (unless noted). You'll still have the same partition size for apps on one ROM as you will another. Debloating won't shift the 'free' space from one partition to another.
First off the phone doesn't really have 16 GB storage, regardless of all the bloatware Samsung has, the phone has no more than 12 GB internal storage, and 2+ gigs is taken by the system partition. The only way to reclaim that would be if someone made a tool to re-partition the system size like they did for the HTC HD2 but I doubt it's going to be a easy task. So until then, even installing Cyanogenmod doesn't reclaim the space at all.

If you are doing only for the Gallery application, yes it's very safe. All you will loose are the settings and the thumbnails gallery app generated for your quick viewing.
Any apps data/cache is limited to what it creates, the images and videos are your own it won't touch them

It appears to be broken either way... it has found my backups but when I try to restore, it just hangs there forever.
Downloading now can't wait to try. I've heard a lot of people talk about the titanium backup bug, I've been running the shiny ota-like 4.3 build and haven't had any trouble using titanium backup.

How are you testing this? Are you being prompted at all for root or is it automatically denying root? Root does work differently in 4.3 then it has worked in the past so some rooted apps may act differently as well. The real question is are you getting prompted for root access when you open these apps and do you have a root shell in ADB?

Well, then perhaps TricksterMod needs updating. It reports that the phone is not rooted, and then closes.
And that goes for Fast Charge (a toggle app), too. What root apps are confirmed to be WORKING?

Interesting... I just downloaded trickster and I did get a root prompt. Check your settings under "superuser" and see if it is allowed for apps. Also, did you download any third party SU app?
I am currently compiling a new rom now to see if that might help you...
