Note II - Laggy and jerky?

I went to try out the Note II in store today - and couldn't believe how laggy it was... I have the Original Note, which feels much faster in comparison.
I noticed lag on
Home Screen - jerky movement
App Drawer - jerky again
Gallery - Took 10 seconds to open, very jerky scroll
Home Button - 3 or 4 seconds to return to home
My note doesn't lag on any of these, even with the new 3D Gallery app.
This was in the UK, O2 store. I even tried it on two display models and they were just as bad
I reminded me of the horrible lag I used to get on the old Galaxy S with 2.2
Anyone else noticed this?

I have 245 apps installed on my Note 2 and it screams.
I showed to one of my coworkers, who has the S3, and he was commenting on how much faster it was than his phone.
So I'm not sure what the problem is there. Some sort of horrible bloatware?

I hate lag & hope the reviews are correct that the Note2 is a game changer for Android sans the dreaded lag but did notice some YouTube Videos on ways to address stock device lag:

maybe it had all those app runing in the background since most ppl never close them

Mods please close this thread. The Note 2 is the smoothest phone I have ever held. A pure joy to use.

But again in stores everyone mess around with a phone and God knows what they do it.

I agree, some people take things a little to close to heart. But anyway in reply to the OP, I think that it was most likely because of everyone that uses the phone that goes through the store. I guarantee that thing has so many apps running in the background. If you go again, I say try to reboot it, and if you can't do that, try and close out as many apps as possible.

Obvious troll thread imo or the OP is a typical iPhone user in wich case he is not to blame as iPhones prevent you from using your brain

In defense of the OP I would say that I have noticed a very occasional lag once or twice when something has been running. For example running the premium version of printer share caused a massive drain on resources including battery and caused my device to hiccup. Also, I have noticed slowdowns with s-planner and netflix - both have frozen on me forcing at the least a force-close of the app and once a force reboot.
So, before too many people start jumping on the 'It's a troll, run for the hills' bandwagon, perhaps take a minute to realise that the stock device, while being simply awesome, fast, smooth and generally amazing is not completely bug free.
Just a thought.

My point exactly...

I had the same experience in the Vodafone store, the note 2 on display almost came to a halt. I tried holding down the home button to see if there were many apps running but it wouldn't even bring up the task manager. Now I KNOW the note 2 is a beast but an 'average' consumer might have been put off by it.
I still can't make my mind up between this and the S3 LTE version that also comes with 2GB RAM.

Oh come on guys, these in store demo unist are left on for days and days and days without reboot, people mess around with them all day, they are a prime example of a phone at its worse, ram usage will be high, apps won't have been closed properly or at all etc etc.

I use my phone most of the time with power saving mode, I have about 100 apps and my free ram is about 100Mo and I'm yet to experience any lag at all.

[Q] It cannot be that slow

Hello there, first time i write here but been reading a lot!
First, you need to know I own a galaxy s2 s3 s4 (all rooted) and my good friend has a note 3.
Also played a lot with nexus10 and the first galaxy note 10.1
I waited so long to buy the "perfect" tablet. Ipad is out of question even tho we know they are awesome tablet, i am a system administrator and i need Android.
So when i heard about the new note 10.1 2014, i was very existed because i REALLY like my s4 and my friend's note 3.
And i thought the s pen was awesome for a tablet (seeing my kid having fun drawing on their own picture is a +).
Well i convicted my girlfriend we need this, i started reading a lot of reviews and decided to buy because reviews are all saying the tablet was the best to compete vs the ipad.
I bought it brand new on eBay because there was no place i can buy it in Canada.
As soon as i received it, i found it run so damn slow. .. WAY slower than my s4.
I can live with the short battery life, that's not a big deal even tho the 2x quad core was supposed to help that (running on 1.3 while on hold to save battery).
Looks like it is always running on that 1.3ghz cpu now.
I did a factory default reset. .. Then a hard reset, nothing helped.
Runs great Sometimes, but sometimes I am note even able to browse picture on the default gallery. Still no apps installed! !!
My friend with the note 3 came here last night and was amazed to see how the screen has a bad responds to finger but very good with the pen. Also how it freezes and lags.
Now... is it only MY galaxy note ?
Should i send it to Samsung and hope it is going to be OK when i receive it back ?
Is it normal and should be all fixed with kit kat update ?
Or normal... They missed it so i should just throw it away ? If so... What else should i get ?
I very like the aspect. The home/menu/back buttons, the o/s (touch wiz), the nexus 10 was not that great even with kit kat, but runs so much faster.
I don't know what to do, i want a tablet with the s pen, but the hold note 3 is running smoother than my 2014 edition! !!
I guess i need help here !
And as i bought the item from usa eBay, I'll have to pay for the shipping to Samsung if i send them my tablet for repair !

It all seams to be random. .. Now the gallery works perfectly.
Really looks to be a problem switching from a cpu to the other and stays on the 1.3
Right now, while typing this, i got an error saying the gallery has stopped working! !
Any idea which benchmark i should use ?

See attached is the print screen of a benchmark. .. Perfect score, exactly what i was expecting from this tablet.
But it definitively does not feel like it!

I have no problems with the gallery app. Before I bought the Note, I had the Xperia Tablet Z for a short time and it was much slower in the Gallery app. My JPEGs usually are about 10 MByte each and browsing hundreds of them works very well on the Note.

You are on MK1 which is the latest in US as far as I'm aware.

You have the current firmware, so that is not the issue. It is possible that you have a corrupted file somewhere that is causing a problem for an app.
To check this:
- Do have an SD card installed? If so, do the problems go away if you remove the card? I've seen cases (although, on earlier galaxy devices, not this one) where a corrupt jpeg file causes the gallery app to run constantly, slowing everything else down.
- You said it is always running at 1.3ghz. That could indicate a problem with an app running all the time in the background and slowing things down. When you are not using it for a while (e.g., at night) the CPU should slow down to deep sleep. If that is not happening and you want to figure which app running and keeping it at 1.3, trying downloading an app called BetterBatteryStats. It will show (after a bit of a learning curve) the CPU time for all your running apps.

No sd card yet and i do not think i will need any. I have enough on my s4
I found the system slow so i did a factory reset from the menus.
It was still slow after so i did a hard reset.
If it is a corrupted file. .. That file is in the core files because the hard reset would have wipe it !
But it makes sense tho since the problem is random.
But every thing should be as smooth as the s4 and the note 3 ?
Not because it had a bigger screen. ..i should feel a little lag switching from photos to photos (or windows to windows) ?

The bigger display area will make a difference. The N3 has a PPI of 386 and a 5.7" display. The N10.1-14 has a PPI of 299 and a 10.1" display. I'm too lazy to compute the actual display area but the N10.1-14's CPU/GPU is pushing at least 40% more pixels to the display.
I should feel a little lag switching from photos to photos (or windows to windows) ?

The N3's much faster at transitions and app opening/closing than the N10.1-14. If you pinch-zoom to display all your home pages on the N3 it's fast; on the N10.1-14 not so much. I find that within apps the N10.1-14's fine and its performance reflects the high-end h/w. It'll stutter occasionally during a transition or in opening/closing apps but it's still plenty fast; at least to me. Hopefully performance will improve when we get 4.4/M-UX because the CES display units were impressively fast at pinch zooming and transitions.
Samsung's Gallery app has always had occasional indexing problems; especially with large numbers of photos and when cloud services are displayed in the Gallery. The next time it happens turn off Wi-Fi. It should instantly start responding normally. Once the indexing service has caught up the Gallery should be fine (until it indexes again).

True, the N3 is a war machine !
But compared to my S4 then, it should at least be as fast !
I really like my S4, decent speed, never crashes.
Only holding the screen between 2 photos is lagging on the 10.1-14 !
But this is not my concern, the real problem is when it decides to run slower then my hold S2 !
And compared to the first gen 10.1, beside the interface which is way better on the 10.1-14, the speed seams faster on the old one and the touch screen works better with fingers too !

It is what it is my friend. You're running the latest U.S. s/w so unless you're having a h/w issue (doubtful) than the performance you're getting is the performance you're going to get. At least until updates hopefully speed of fluidity. The Tab/Note|Pro's running 4.4/M-UX appear significantly faster than the N10.1-14 and use the exact same h/w so the occasional lag we're seeing is curable with s/w.

Is there any software I can install to see which CPU is running ?
Because when it runs great, I m happy with the little lag... not a big problem
But when it decides to stop, them everything is slow.
I see no updates running, if I empty the ram, it is still using 2.05 out of 3 ! ( I have 2 users)
Even switching from users to the other is slower then what I see on youtube (People showing that fonctionnality).
and WAAAY slower that the old nexus 10 I used.
Maybe the switching from 1 processor to the other is not perfect and gives problem a lot ...

Root and freeze or install all the bloat ware Inc my magazine. Download greenify and hibernate running apps, in developer options turn the animations to 0.5. Or try nova launcher too

Not sure i understood it all. . But I'll try to decrypt.
I don't want to root it right now as I'm not sure i will keep it !!!
I know Nova launcher and was about to give it a try when i figured out the problem was not only the home screen. ..
Is it normal to be running almost all the time at 2.3gb out of 3 ?
I close all the apps on the 2 users, clear the ram and still running at 2.3-2.4gb
I only saw it once at 1.7!

Yeah that sounds about right. You can go to settings > apps. >all. And click on the apps u don't use or u think could be running in the background and disable them. Also the less screen pages and widgets you have running the better. I'd recommend an app called clean master. It will clean your device. Before I rooted my ram was that hight but after rooting it can as low as 1.2. Generally on 1.5. And rarely goes over 2. Hope this helps

Se this morning it was at 1.9 Gb used out of 3 ! (2,71 in fact)
I have 3 apps opened now (facebook messenger, VLC et My Magazine) and I m using 2.54 ..... I think it s weird !
I only have 5 apps installed on it.
Also, I use swype to type text (slide my fingers through the keyboard) and sometimes it just doesn't work. I start sliding and it's like it cannot see my finger anymore. Works better with the pen again. Like I said previously, like it the screen has hard time to detect my finger on the screen.
Again, sometimes .. not always !
I think I m gonna see how much it will cost me to send it back to samsung and have it repaired .. I don't think all this is normal.
A lot of people say they bought tablets for 150$ and they works perfectly.
Yes mine does multi user, but at 150 I could have bought 4 of 'em + a lot of accessories !

Don't confuse "apps" with "processes" and "services." Because of all Samsung's "stuff" (EG: Multi View, S Pen) there are a gazillion open processes running in the background anticipating being needed. If you go in to Task Manager and "clear RAM" you'll see 40-50 processes being closed. You really needn't worry about it because Android dynamically manages memory and if something in the foreground needs memory it'll prioritize what to close in the background. Also, Mali reserves probably 500MB for itself at all times so you never really had 3GB of RAM truly available. Samsung, not being a benevolent company, included 3GB of RAM in the N3 and N10.1-14 for a reason.
In other words, if you're having some type of performance issue it's highly doubtful it's being caused by RAM starvation.

Of course the ram is not the problem... even if there is only 300 mo free, that s enough to manage the program I run.
But I really hate when I cannot swipe to type, when the gallery is so buggy that I cannot browse my pictures ( 10 photos max... not linked with Dropbox or facebook), when I have to wait for the next page in the apps page, when I try to slide the page and it just doesn't t work.. have to do it twice or trice ... When I want to slide down the notifications but I have to try 3-5-6 or 7 times...
Switching pages in the S note take times...sometimes lag but that is not a problem for me... All the others tho really makes me feel like either that tablet is a crap or mine has a problem .
I would sincerely prefere the second

Hi guys I just bought my Tab S 10.5 (T800) a couple of days ago, however I'm finding some annoyances, that are giving me a headache when using it and are making me think, to return it
1) When i'm scrolling a website or flipboard in my usual way/speed the text/images appears to jump a tinny bit like if it's stuttering, instead of smooth transitions.
2) When the keyboard "launches" it doesn't matter if I turn off the animations or put them at .5 or 1x, when on the browser I'm trying to type something on a search bar there is a white tail before and after the keyboard launch, this tail makes the content on the bottom of the keyboard to appears like a flash. However this doesn't happen when trying to type an url, This is better noticed on a dark background for example go to this site mary-black.net (or whatever site which has an embedded search and uses a dark background) and launch the keyboard trying to type something on the search bar and then hide the keyboard.
The keyboard "white tail" doesn't happen on my sero 7 pro running an AOSP rom, however it has some stuttering while browsing, but I though it was because some kind of underpower, because my S4 running a touchwiz rom it doesn't stutter at all it's like butter on every single scrolling page/app/etc but it has also that "white tail" sometimes but it's so quick and is not my main browsing device, so I was trying to replace my main tablet an ipad 2 (7.1.2) which it browse like a champ exactly as my S4 and is way better than this Tab S
yeah I have tried a lot of browsers, maxthon, chrome, firefox,opera, dolphin, boat, and the less worst is the stock one
Oh and also it seems to not hold webpages on ram, because when I go to a link and then go back, instead of showing me the content right away, it shows a blank page and suddenly the content, however this a problem because if i was on a search or something it brings me to the top of the page again, and also typing something on a search is laggy, the letter don't go with the keystroke.
BTW: I don't use touchwiz launcher, I'm using nova/apex.
I have enabled also Force GPU Rendering and Turn off/on hardware overlays. nothing seems to fix it.
Also have found that the performance is not consistent at all, sometimes the apps load very fast, browse very fast and it's a pleasure, but sometimes it lags, yeah not like a minute or so, but the overall experience using it, is not something I was expecting, I was expecting at least the same behavior of my S4 and S2 and way better than my old ipad 2, and unfortunately none of those are met

You need to do a video to prove it, that's how it goes around here.

1) same here. I is only slight stuttering and only when scrolling intensively, but it is noticeable. I tried all the browsers, but best in this regard is stock browser, followed by chrome browser (which I currently use). Some of the other browsers have even more severe problems regarding scrolling and also impose certain lag registering scroll gesture.
2) I am using TouchPal and not seeing any keyboard "white tail".
3) Webpage caching: yes, it does not keep pages in RAM and requires a reload. Particularly annoying when on a mobile connection. I've not yet come across any browser that does a proper RAM caching of pages. Also the OS seems to grab the RAM. E.g., when you have multiple tabs open and switch between Apps it does reload all the tabs. Ridiculous. At 3GB the Tab S should have plenty of RAM.
Overall the Tab S hardware is capable enough to provide a smooth user experience even with the above issues. But still I am hoping for some fix.
Probably some tweak of the memory management could help? Also investigation of background load. Seemingly there are to many services that do indexing, report back to Google or Samsung, check updates etc. Probably also the Mali-T628 GPU has some premature driver implementation? Or maybe the Samsung color enhancement for AMOLED is the culprit?

Here is one showing the reloading on going back. which btw it also shows how with only one finger touching the screen it sometimes act as 2 (pinch to zoom) this little problem is very rare but it's not the first time has happen, and you can see the lag on the keyboard before launching also, there is that "white" then the keyboard.

The ipad also has a bit stuttering, but not as much as the S, which IMO this should not be happening, the S has way more power/ram than the old ipad 2
I hope yours is not acting like this, could you please provide a video if yours is working at it supposed to be..

Yeah the more you start using the tablet, the more stuttering it appears, and also when trying to open the recent apps, sometimes there is also a lot of lag until everything appear. The problem with this is they are not predictable.
I tried that keyboard and is doing me exactly the same (white tale), I think this is because instead of launching the keyboard and the placeholder at the same time, they are launched a different time, and I have just confirmed this enabling Layout boundaries under developer options. :/

My 8.4 works exactly as yours. That's how it is.
white tale seems to be some re-rendering issue of the app, not the keyboard.
One might check with Cyanogenmod whether it persists there too. Pretty sure it is some SW issue, HW should be plenty capable.

I bet it's software issues, launching the placeholder for the keyboard before and after the keyboard. But to be honest I don't want to install Cyanogen or aosp to this tablet, because that will break sidesync, multi window, s planner and s finder. if I would need to flash those roms to be able to enjoy the hardware then I would go with a boring but trusty ipad or wait to see what is announced on september at the IFA.

- Similar hardware used on phones with 1080p screen to drive 1600p screen, which is almost twice as many pixels to render. The GPU is working extra hard but should still cope.
- TouchWiz makes this much worse and through past discussions, this is mostly the cause of the lags and stutters. If you use some other popular launcher, lags and stutters would almost be non-existent.
- iOS on iPads and iPhones are smooth because Apple only need to focus on optimising on their own hardware. Android on the other hand has to work on so many combinations of hardware out there, it's much more difficult to make things buttery smooth like iOS.
I see these issues as well on my 8.4, but not enough to get bothered by it, but would welcome any improvement through OTAs.

Replacing the launcher has zero effect on anything except launching an app!
There might be some touchwiz related code behind the scenes, but to replace that you need a revised ROM.

I'm using Nova or Apex, yeah those don't have lag on the major of transitions, but sometimes they stutter just a bit, yeah not a breaking deal. But the stuttering while browsing/reading and the keyboard issue is making me have headaches, and that will not be solved using another launcher.
I understand that point regarding iOS, but trust me, my S4 is running on a touchwiz rom and it doesn't act like this tab S, geez even my old S2 never acted like this.

Regarding three Samsung bloatware, there are replacements for each of them, if you really need that. I personally think, most of it is just premature and unnecessary. Multi window for example. What do you do with that? I just have GMD gesture control with some user defined gesture to switch between the last apps.

I run excel spreadsheets while browsing for making quotes, compare values and stuff like that, need to compare spreadsheets with word documents, to give you an idea I use 3 monitors for my desktop.
So actually multiwindow is a very usefull "gadget" for me, and that's what got my attention, the 3gb of ram I though well this will handle my workload with out a problem, 10.5" screen good space for multi window, and well the exynos ? I would prefer a snapdragon version, but I don't need LTE on my tablet as always I can theter from my S4, and none local store have one with snapdragon in case I need to return it or something.
And yeah GMD Gestures is a must for a tablet.

I now own two of these devices, a 10.5 and an 8.4. I use Nova Launcher. Even running stock OTA I have never experienced any scrolling lag or stutter using the stock browser. My only complaints were some keyboard lag which I believe disabling DVFS improved and using a firewall hack to speed up embedded video steaming. Other than that and the typical pageload lag JavaScript causes I have had zero lag or stutter issues with either tablet.
As setup currently both of these tabs are completely smooth.

OK I see your problem. The fade animation is working properly when you select the address bar but not when you select a text box on the actual website. I think this is just the website re rendering as the keyboard closes since you were interacting with it. You only really notice it because the background of your website is dark.
I believe this is a stock browser thing as it does not do this using Dolphin.

Yeah that kinda of fade is what I'm not getting, it only does that fade when i'm typing on the address bar, but when i'm typing on something inside a webpage that trail appears. In what build are you ? Mine is NFB, hope anybody else can confirm if they have it or not and what mods are running.
I did factory reset but didn't solve it.
EDIT: Well this happen on white pages also, "covering" what is on screen. I did that on a dark background because is more apparent. If I enable layout bounds on developer options it shows that the placeholder is triggering before the actual keyboard. Tomorrow i will make a video with the layouts enabled.
And mine is doing it with every browser i have tested.

I changed my original post. I think you missed it. Yes I am getting same thing in stock browser. This does not occur using Dolphin. Not a Tab S issue. A stock browser issue. The dark background of your website makes it more noticeable.
Update. Does it in Chrome browser too. If that bothers you try Dolphin browser.

I got the same white tail issue also in chrome browser.
Dolphin doesn't do that, gives a bit better re-rendering. But Dolphin mini also struggles. Weird.
Both are slightly more sluggish in scrolling, that's most important, so I sorted them out.
Also that nonsens gesture implementation (requires to press a button first) did not win me.

There is one thing the stock browser by far does the best of any browser I have tried. Play embedded video clips. Dolphin? You may as well not bother. Expect 10+ second load times. Using a little firewall hack I'm getting almost instant video loads in stock with no buffering lag.
The little white flash when closing the keyboard is a non issue for me, especially when using a website with a white background. Don't even notice it.

maybe try to debloat the ROM and then go into developer options to change the animations to .5 or disable them entire(I disable them in all android devices I own)

Well I don't know what happen, I did some factory reset like 3 in a row, then the first thing I did was, go straight to update chrome to 36.0.1985.131 and now it's working at it should. Yeah with some occasional stutter, mostly when launching an app. But not like was doing it before. The white tale is still there but not as heavy like it was before.

Issues with Note 4

I've had my note 4 for a couple weeks now, and I have to say that the phone is not as powerful as I expected. Whenever I run a resource heavy app, the phone experiences severe lag after exiting the app. For instance, the Caustic app, which is a music mixing app, runs descent on my note 4 but after exiting the app the launcher becomes very stuttery and laggy. I loaded the phone up with Nova launcher prime, and it does work better, yet still lags. I have clean master installed, and I've gotton notifications from it a couple times telling me the RAM is above 80% and the CPU is hot.. I've always been under the impression that clearing processes from RAM on Android is a no no, but as a last ditch effort, I went ahead and did it anyway. Over all, I'm not happy with the phone performance. My 2013 nexus 7 performes better, and this is supposed to be a beefier device as far as hardware is concerned.. Should I take the phone back to AT&T?

As I have not used caustic I cannot say if it does the same.
Is that app caustic 3?

Yes, the app that's causing me the lag is caustic 3. The only other app that had caused the same stutter is Fit Brains Trainer by roseta stone.. Are you having problems too?

So I tried caustic not sure how long but it does lag the launcher after exiting. (nova launcher)
Also after reboot every thing is running smoothly again and started caustic again and it does not lag after exiting ~5mins of running (maybe I didn't leave it running as long or what not I'm not sure but that's all I can observe so far)

This is exactly why we need the ability to flash custom roms on Samsung devices. The out-of-the-box experience sucks. The phone performs night and day on a custom rom.

Thank you for the feedback, I really appreciate it. My girlfriend has an AT&T Note 4 as well. I loaded hers up with the caustic app, and had the same laggy results. Yea, sometimes after exiting the app, the lag is so bad I have to reboot, other times a simple screen lock and unlock takes care of it, and other times there is no lag at all. When I was using the touch wiz launcher it caused lag everytime.. Nova launcher is working much better, but still not satisfactory..IMO, if I have what is considered to be one of, if not the most powerful smartphone currently, I shouldn't be dealing with this at all.. I think after this phone I'll stick with nexus devices.. Even though I said the same thing after my Galaxy S4, and somehow got sucked into the hype on this phone..

I think it's probably just Samsung bloatware interfering with phone function.
Personally I don't think it is a deal breaker just keep an eye out for those apps it may not be 100% compatible with our phones.

You may want to report the issue to the developer of Caustic. It could just be a software glitch isolated to this phone.
I personally haven't had the chance to see this phone lag at all and I definitely use it very heavily.

Do you use a cleaner app? I use clean master, and about once or twice a day I get a notification from clean master telling me the phone is preforming poorly, and ram is over %80. This usually occurs when I have a few apps open, and I usually do experience minor lag leading up to this. I allow clean master to wipe the ram, then reboot the phone and all is well for a while. This is very discouraging..

While a bit counterintuitive to what we have been seeing on windows etc.
This phone is designed to use all of its ram.
It should not lag while doing it and apps that causes it to lag is probably dev error so make note of those apps and keep an eye out for it.
Ram is not being used unnecessarily android purposely stores cached in ram to allow it to load faster.

It is not the app's fault. I made a thread about this same exact behavior a couple weeks ago but not a single person responded. Jittery, laggy performance after exiting a game or other graphics intensive app. Only thing that would get rid of it was a reboot.
I got a PM from Samsung Support about it though which surprised me. I think they may be aware of some type of issue.
It happened for me after two different apps closing so it's not your app. And it doesn't happen after every closing either. The jittery behavior is not limited to the launcher either. Next time it happens open another app and scroll, like the browser. It was terribly choppy.
The good news is Samsung reached out to me which is always a positive sign for fixes.

Yea, definitely not the apps fault. I've confirmed this by installing the same app on my Nexus 7 and Galaxy S4; the app runs fine on those two devices without any lag as a result. It may be compatability issues with the newer qualcom chip, or possibly all of the bloatware on the phone weighing things down. These ideas are all speculation on my part. It's good to hear that Samsung is aware of the issue. Please keep us posted on anything new in regards to the issue. Just an FYI, I've replaced Nova Launcher with the Google now launcher, and for the last 3 days the phone has been running remarkably smoother. Hopefully lollipop will fix these issues.. Root would definitely be nice.

If I get any updates I'll make sure to inform you all. I'm using Nova and it seems pretty fast. Were you having issues with it that made you switch to Google? Or is Google Launcher just that much better?

I was having some minor issues with Nova Launcher. I was getting random crashes, where Nova itself was actually crashing, which was a first for me. I was also getting some lag while scrolling, opening and closing apps. When I use Nova Launcher, I tweak allot of the settings, so that may have had something to do with it, but I've used Nova Launcher for the last year and a half on my Galaxy S4 w/o any problems.. Google now launcher doesn't have any options for customization of any kind, but it has been very smooth and effective.

Do I have a defective note 4?

Ok so I'm trying to find out if maybe I just have a defective note 4
Ive been a phone guy for over 12 years now and I know when a phone is laggy
I came from the iPhone 5s to the note 4 by the way
I notice lag on opening app transitions, on the messaging app when I send a text the bubble should come out nice and fluid with the processor this phone has
On the browser it just does not feel fluid
I am really wanting to go to an iPhone 6 but they have been sold out since launch

You probably don't have a defective Note 4. Here are a couple of things you can try:
--Do a Factory Reset. This will wipe your phone clean, to include whatever apps you have downloaded, but it will give your phone a fresh start. This would be the last option I did.
--Try a different launcher. Apex, Nova etc. There are many good launcher replacements on the Play Store. This is a free version of each launcher and a paid version which gives you more flexibility and ability to adjust settings. Most launchers enable you to adjust animation and in most cases you can turn animations off all together. I use Nova and love it.
--Enable Developer Option on your phone (menu>settings>about phone and tap on model about seven times). This will option Developers Options and then you can go into Developer Options and adjust other settings what might eliminate the lag. However, I would try the different launcher option before this one also.

Might be defective, if a factory reset doesn't help then I'd exchange it. Reducing the animation scale in developer options will speed up animations but changing the launcher won't help you with browser performance. Again I've had a note 4 since day one and don't have any of those problems, and from the sound of it you really want an iphone, with that being said that's the case you're not gonna be 100% satisfied until u get the device you want. Hope that helps.

I have a defective note 4. And I've been noticing a bunch of them don't have the same performance.
I ran antutu benchmarks on my first note 4 and got around 47k which is normal.
On my new one(which I will be exchanging) I consistently get 43-44k.
I recently ran the same test on two note 4 edge and they consistently got 44k.
They are suppose to get 47k or better.
I'm not sure what the deal is.

My device was laggy right off the bat. I let the device settle, installed the apps I needed, uninstalled/turned off apps I'm not going to use, installed Nova, and now there's virtually no lag. I also changed the display setting so there wasn't such a burgundy tint. It appears to be running pretty good now - better than my Note 3 ever did.

i've noticed a lag on mine at random times in no particular app or browser. the phone is still working but the touchscreen is unresponsive. if i'm playing a game or watching a video, the game or video plays seemlessly but i can't do anything with the phone for about 3-4 seconds.
can't figure it out.

There is some phones that are lag filled and it is a defective unit.
My first was one, even Samsung called it a lemon and said to replace it, so my second has been perfect.
Mine was a touch lag
- I could type 2 wards before the keys animated or words showed
- same with Spen
- same lag touching the screen with a long delay between touch and reaction

I discovered my retail one had faulty cores. Between cpu-z and antutu scores really low. It was easy to discover.. Also turn off HDR mode on your camera.. In the settings that helps with camera lag who has issues there.
