For a 4.3 ROM, you need to install 4.3 bootloaders. Are there any drawbacks?

I'm considering upgrading to a 4.3 rom from 4.1.2 and I've learned that a stock image of 4.3 must be flashed first (thorugh Odin?) to update the bootloader to 4.3.
Is there any drawback to upgrading? Will I still be able to flash 4.1.2 roms using the 4.3 bootloader? Will I be able to downgrade to the 4.1.2 bootloader (should the need arise)?
Side question: is Odin the only way to update the bootloader? Can it be flashed through TWRP?

You'll have Knox. (Stock) which locks u down cause u can't downgrade and by rooting, you're going for a un-reset-able Knox Warranty Void trigger. Downgrading bootloader is impossible as of now, but flashing ROMs should be possible. (Should, not damn sure)
Side Answer: don't think so. Just flash stock 4.3 through TWRP and u should be good to go.
Smack that thanks button If I helped!

I'm running 4.3 JediMasterX2 with old bootloader and devil kernel and everything seems to be running fine. There was a very informative post made recently they gave a clean and simple explication of pros and cons to bootloader update. I'll try to locate and post a link but long story short, it's in your best interest not to update bootloader if you don't have to.

Please don't do the official update and get yourself locked down like many of us have. I have flashed many 4.3 roms and they worked fine. Got a new phone and did the official update and now I cannot send this device in for warranty because of the KNOX flash counter.

[Q] I747M still on Rogers 4.1

Hi,
I just noticed that my wife's Galaxy S III still has original 4.1 stock ROM. I tried to do a OTA update (Rogers) but the system is saying that there is no update available. The phone is rooted.
Do I need to unroot the phone to get the update?
Thx,

Just download 4.3 Rogers and you now have the latest firmware with root. Good Luck

If you load 4.3 with an updated bootloader, you won't be able to downgrade the OS.

Yeah that is true but if you don't want 4.3 then you can always download the 4.1.2 or 4.1 instead.

Update in pc

I am on 4.1.2 Jelly bean rooted and unlocked with mako bootloader, my pc tells me that there is a new update for my phone. If I install it, is there any chance that I can brick my phone? Can somebody tell me what will happen if I update it? Please, thank you!

Yes, you gonna brick it. Don't do OTA if you're bootloader unlocked. You should flash the firmware update manually. I got my n7 bricked long time ago after updating ota.

[Q] Downgrade 4.4.2 to 4.1.1 to unlock

Is it possible to downgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.1.1 to unlock the device?
You just flash the 4.1.1 then probably have to flash your bootloader if it doesn't boot and then flash the jl2 radio
Hi, I have a custom rom, the galaxy project 4.4.2. What I need to do to unlock the phone?
Can I downgrade to a custom 4.1.2 via recovery, and apply the unlock tutorial?
Correct me if I'm wrong, It's the bootloader that has to be downgraded in order to unlock using the hidden menu. But with devices that took OTA updates 4.3 or later, downgrading bootloader will brick the phone. I'm also looking for an unlock option but no luck so far because my Note 2 has OTA 4.4.2. Does anyone have better information about this?

Can i Downgrade my AT&T running stock 4.4.2 rom to 4.1.1 ?

Can i downgrade urooted I747 from 4.4.2 to 4.1.1 using odin without bricking my phone?
My build number is KOT49H.I747UCUFNJ1
And also can i update that to 4.4.2 OTA again?
Please reply soon.
You can downgrade the ROM but not the bootloader. Attempts to downgrade the bootloader will probably brick the phone.

Im sort for noob question. But whats a bootloader and how can I downgrade to 4.1.1 without flashing bootloader?
Are you trying to downgrade to 4.1.1 to sim unlock the phone using the free method? If you are, this will not work because the 4.1.1 modem will not work on a 4.4.2 bootloader. You will need to obtain an unlock code.

MY phone is already sim unlocked I am just trying to fresh install stock Rom on my phone which is on 4.4.2. Can you help me with links please. AND THANKS for the quick reply
You will not be able to downgrade the rom to 4.1.1 while keeping the bootloader at 4.4.2 because the modem will not work on a 4.4.2 bootloader which means you probably can't run ota updates.
To downgrade without touching the bootloader and modem, you need to use mobile Odin. Also, you will have to find a source for the 4.1.1 stock rom since att pulled it from sammobile.com.

Willl this work If i flash with mobile odin?
sammobile,com/firmwares/database/SGH-I747/
You may be able to flash 4.1.1 with mobile Odin but ota updates probably won't work due to a mismatch between the bootloader and rom. Also, the ota updates normally get applied in order: first, 4.3, then 4.4.2.
So in Theory If we flashed back and was a success...
Then we can do the unlock and flash back to 4.2.2 then rom it again ?

Nope, can't unlock using the free method if the phone is running a 4.3 or newer bootloader. Even if you downgrade the rom to 4.1.1.

Any chance their emails are ending up in a spam/advertising folder and not making it to your inbox?
I've had no problems with AT&T unlocking phones in past. As long as you're "eligible" (I assume that means off contract) they email the codes and instructions, no fuss.
