All,
My Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 2 phone is rooted and is running Android 4.1.2, build MA7 and I would like to enable WiFI tethering. I know that at some point in the past I was able to do this. Now, no matter what I try, I cannot get it to work. For example, I just downloaded and installed PdaNet (using the link for Sprint customers - aren't we lucky ).
When I ran the program, the following message was displayed:
Hotspot/Tethering Error
Unable to connect to data network; turning off Hotspot/Tethering. You may not be subscribed to the Hotspot service; please contact your phone company.
I have seen this same error message when trying several other similar programs.
What should I do to get WiFi hot-spot functionality working?

I hope I am posting this correctly. If not please forgive me in advance. My Evo (3.7 update) is rooted with Unrevoked and all Superuser permissions are intact. All my "root required" apps work correctly. My problem is that tethering will not stay connected, wired or wirelessly. I can connect and have internet access for about 5 minutes, then I lose internet connectivity although the phone shows still app running. I did not flash any specific roms, only rooted the phone because I'm okay with everything else on the phone. I have tried pdanet, easy tether, barnacle wi fi tether, and plain wifi tether. I have tried tethering different devices and still can stay connected for no more than 5 minutes. I then have to close the tethering app and restart to get another 5 minutes. Did Sprint enable something in 3.7 update that's causing this? I never had this issue on my rooted Hero. And finally, I am not in a 4g area so I'm doing this all 3g. Can anyone please assist me. I was almost tempted to pay the 30 bucks until I came to my senses!
I recently upgraded to Jellybean and rooted my phone via root66 method. Now when I turn on my native hotspot app, it switches itself off instantly. It doesn't give any error message or anything. Before the upgrade I was able to use the native hotspot app just fine. I am oversea right now so I am not using T-Mobile's network. Is there something in the Jellybean image that is causing this?
Hi guys, I have the older classic unlimited plan with tmobile and this was before they gave free 2.5 gb of data with their unlimited plan. I am not allowed to switch to the new plans till may of this year, no matter how much I asked.
anyways, I really need to use wifi tether for use with a windows 8.1 tablet. before rooting, I tried foxfi and it would connect, but then I would receive the tmobile block asking me to upgrade. I tried user agent switcher to many different ones and I would still receive the block.
Then I rooted and installed the google wireless tether app, first time with an experimental one , then with the latest stable one. once broadcasting, my device would see the network but would not connect and just gives an error instead. sometimes it would not even come up in the list of wifi networks.
What else should I try? or is it truly blocked by tmobile?
thanks in advance
I have a T-Mobile Note 3, still using the stock rom but I have rooted it. My question is there any way to wifi tether that does not "verify" tethering status with T-Mobile?
When starting up the built in hot-spot or FoxFi a popup comes up and tethering is verified with T-Mobile.
I know, I know, T-Mobile comes with X amount of free tethering. I have 2.5 gigs of free tethering and I never go over it. However, I'm going to Mexico for two weeks and T-Mobile has unlimited free international data but no tethering. I assume the "verify" step is going to stop me from tethering.
What rooted app will allow wifi tethering for the Note 3 that does no verification with T-Mobile? I've already tried 10 wifi tether apps from the market place and none of them work on the Note 3.
Bumping as I have a similar question. With Jellybean I just froze the provisioning apk and this worked. In Kitkat doing this causes force closes.
I have a Tasker task that turns on the hotspot when my radio connects to my phone via Bluetooth. This works fine if the screen is on, but the point is to have this happen automatically. If I have to take my phone out of my pocket and make sure the screen stays on, I might as well just turn on tethering manually. The task does run as I have verified that the other parts of the task run while the screen is off.
I'm pretty sure that all the info to address this is in a thread that I just bumped a minute or 5 ago.
I figured it out. At least for my situation. I have tethering and I wasn't trying to bypass any limits. I just wanted to enable tethering without the screen being on. I modified the framework-res APK to not call the provisioning APK and froze the Tethering*.apk files.
I tried to attach the file but it is not working. I will try again later.
framework-res.apk
I also added Bluetooth tethering option.
Can you give us the link daneurysm ? Thanks!

Thanks a lot.
Hope this is in the correct forum.
99.834% of the time, I resolve my issues through exhausting the plethora of threads here or through google. So before attempt further options..........
Couple days ago, I just purchased a SIM card and the BYOD $60 unlimited plan with MetroPCS.
It was my intention to USB tether into my router and share phone data.
I tested both a T-mobile S3 and a Ting(sprint) S3 prior to walking into the Metro store.
At home I connect the new Metro service via the S3, router detects phone and connects, turn on phone USB tether function, but I get no internet through my network, however phone able to browse with no issues.
Wi-Fi tether works fine. Countless hours later of router updates, app installation, app troubleshooting, retest other phones, APN adjustments, etc.
I really did not want to do it, but I drove back to the MetroPCS store today and had a very helpful employee, explore my troubles.
I brought my laptop and USB cable.
He tried my phone, his phone and a second employees metro service phone with no luck, he called corporate tech line.
MetroPCS Corporate states that company wide, they do not offer or support USB capability tethering? only hotspot tethering.
No one in the store was aware of this and could not help me. What??? really? I find this hard to believe.
As my intention is to connect to a router, apps such as Foxfi, pdanet, etc that need a corresponding app installed of the client are not viable.
I am contemplating apk decompiling to adjust the 'tetheringprovision' file, but wanted to ask the question here.
Anyone able to USB tether their MetroPCS data? Is Metro now blocking USB tether?
Some background.
The phone as a T-mobile S3 T999L, stock rooted 4.1.2 with TWRP.
I also tried USB tethering to a Win8.1 laptop - still same issue, everything connects with no errors, just no internet.
What I can do:
If Wi-Fi internet is available from a secondary source, the phone will USB tether this internet connection.
I also installed a T-mobile sim into this phone just to be certain it was not a phone issue - the T-mobile SIM tethered with internet fine into my router.
Any thoughts?
Upgrade
ok, left to my own devices.......
Reading multiple threads on similar tether problems experienced by others, I kept reading recommendations to install cyanogenmod, as it had native tether functions without restriction.
As most deviations from stock always seem so convoluted, I was hesitant.
WOW, that was easy, except for a small stumble on clearing the cache prior, a factory reset, then copying a zip file, it installed flawless.
Now running 4.4.4.
ALL the T-mobile CRAP is 100% gone, and the best of it all, I got USB tether, woohoo.
Interestingly - the baseband remained the same, but signal improved, another +.
AND....no bloatware. Gotta love it.
XDA forums are the Sh*t !
