Does the enable Amazon updates toggle check mark in the settings of this app fully disable updates if I uncheck it. I recently did this instead of typing the adb command and it seems to be staying off but is this permanent?

Yes, it's permanent. If you like, you can confirm this from the shell with the command pm list packages -d
Thanks that's what I thought. It just hit me after I gave a couple to friends that it might not be the case wanted to make sure it wouldn't unroot once it leaves my anti Amazon wifi.

If you want extra protection install rbox's ATV compile of Clockwork Mod Recovery. Then you're pretty much iron-clad.
I have that on there but does this mean that the fire TV cannot update itself period?

My understanding is yes. All updates must be done via CWM since stock recovery is no longer present.
The feature to disable Amazon updates requires root, correct?

The main reason I ask this is because after every firmware update the root/su access disappears. I just wonder if there's some way to make it easier to quickly root again after these updates. I'm not saying having to go into adb to root is a major pain, it just gets tedious to have to do it after every simple update the Ouya gets. I was hoping an internal method of rooting would have been discovered or developed by now.
I would think OTA RootKeeper would work:

Probably the easy thing to do is wait for custom rom's to be developed. Currently the one I'm working on has OTA updates redirected to a server in my control, what this would do is stop OTA updates from OUYA and allow us to keep root as long as the ROM supports it.
No, they can't if you keep posting questions in the developer section.

No, it wont. OTA rootkeepers work by either setting the immutable bit for the su file so not even root is allowed to modify/delete it from the filesystem, or they leave another suid binary on the filesystem so if su gets borked, their backup one is still there. All the Ouya updates format the /system partition. Neither a file with the immutable bit set or a backup suid binary would survive if they were on the /system partition.
gianptune,
Ah, I see.
Well, it was a thought anyway.
pitcherj
You could make an update zip that only flashes the su binary that you want.
Could always write a quick batch file or script that would automatically do the steps. Probably someone that knows more than I do that would have a better way of doing it, but that was my thought after seeing the update come down today.
If i put something together & anyone is interested i'll post it just so it will be a quick file to run after each update (I have my OUYA right next to my computer so it's always connected via USB).
I'm working on an all-in-one su/recovery/wifi adb/backup program right now.

Same here. I've already done a little script for wired and wireless sideloading, now im trying to add rooting into it.
Although by the time i figure out how to implement the adb shell su commands into a batch script, theyll be releasing OUYA2.

Does anyone know a way to remove the su app from showing in the leanback launcher. Can't find it in the settings anywhere.
Pardon my ignorance, but what does this do exactly? ...aside from the obvious "gives you root"...I mean how, what does it do to the system?

Do you just download to phone or PC and put the extraction on the Nexus Player to gain root?

Are you referring to the launcher settings or SuperSU settings there should be an option in SuperSU settings to set the SuperSU icon to invisible.
I just happened to check my system today and had the OTA update from LRX21M to LRX21V waiting. I tried installing it but Recovery stopped halfway through the install with an Error. I got back into Android with a power-cycle, so things are fine, but it's still on 21M.
I'm guessing this was due to having rooted the device. Is there a proper way to remove SuperSU to allow for a system update? I see there are 3 different options for cleaning up; does it particularly matter which one I choose? I could just pick one and try it but I'm kind of curious what the differences are between the options. Anybody know?
Update: I tried the second and third cleanup options (new superuser app and full unroot) and neither got me into a state where the OTA was successful. So I just downloaded the factory image and flashed the system.img from it, then reapplied the original root process.

probably a full unroot and flashing the stock boot.img would fully unroot, I wonder when LRX22C (5.0.1) will hit the nexus player
The root is fundamental in all devices for many things, and thanks to Chainfire and others independent developers we can consider Android a semi-open platform. (semi-open because not all is open source)
We don't want Android like the Apple walled garden, but we are not even against the sale of the software, we just want a common garden in which the user can choose and is not obliged.
For example with the root, it was easier to start this project:
Nexus Player with a Full Version of Android Lollipop https://plus.google.com/103019026671039069038/posts/V5XaLxK3vN8
This is just the base rom with all hardware components working, on this base that is very usable, i want add many other options. like external usb webcam and mic, improving the audio part that have fixed volume and many other things useful for the use in TV.
Nexus Player is not just Android TV, but is the first Nexus device with an intel cpu. Is a milestone in the evolution of Android.
This is just the start and I am very open to sharing and collaboration on this project.
Thanks Chainfire for the root and for your "How-To SU" guidelines.
Out of interest will rooting prevent OTA updates from installing in the future?

I did this, despite the warning it gave me. Now although I still get permission dialogs etc, I can not run the main program to delete apps etc from SU access. Is there anyway to go back to the main screen? I went to the apps sections of the NP and unlike other apps it didnt have an open command.
To get it back do I need to uninstall and then re-CFroot?
Thanks. I should pay better attention to dialog boxes but its not a huge deal.
Just as the title dictates. I am trying to walk a friend through installing google play on his rooted fire tv, I emailed him all the necessary files and he installed via es file explorer which apprently did not work as it just gives him a white screen. Is this only able to function if it is installed via adb?
Did you guide him through the xposed framework installation as well?
Yes
danknasty, maybe have your friend read the guide. Why would you not use Adb? and you have to install the xposed framework along with the module for google play to function. And to top it off to make it work perfectly fine, you need to use market helper 2.0 beta.

Yea it's an older person so i was trying to make it as "friendly" as possible. You mentioned Rooted. i have a solution for you. Get him to install quicksupport and start it up. Then use teamviewer on your home pc and connect to it using the number quick support generates. Note: the first time the person will have to accept access to root privs. From that point on you'll have full control of his firetv from your PC. I do that all the time for my parents who live remotely.
I also connect to their PC so I have their PC and their firetv and can do adb install or what ever I need. Hope it helps.

Yeah,. and if he is rooted and has google play which he dosen't as thats what you are trying to install. Then you could install it for him automatically through google any app he needs. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.
One other thing to note is that if he gets the prompt for root grant, you know there is a timer of 15 seconds and he has to accept it in that time. I know i have a hard time explaining that too to my parents.
Thanks I think I lucked out and they hit the permanent root grant option on the unit.

Is there a permanent root option with the newer firmwares? I didn't know. At least not with supersu. The permanent option used to exist in the older rooted firmwares. The new ones' have to select grant everytime root is requested.

If you select the permanent option when you first root I believe it transfers over. When you update it. That was my understanding correct me if I'm wrong.

I've done so many roots and have never seen that option. The older firmwares with towelroot had it that way. but when you upgrade from those rooted versions to the new one, you have to constantly grant.
Are you talking about units you've hardware rooted? I just did one not so long ago and in the supersu program there is a choice that says grant always. After upgrade to the latest firmware it still remains.

On an unrooted device (I assume your device is not modified at all):
- Go to "settings" and look for "Applications'' / "manage applications", select "all", to see every app installed...
- Disable the "Quick Start" app

Does anyone know if there is a run down of all the pre-installed Fire Apps, what they do, and if they're safe to disable?

Hi.
In the past few month, I have used my AFTV to watch KODI streams.
Now, I have decided to root it ( for USB inputs enablement ).
Problem now, The streams cut off after 20-25 minutes.
one post told me to remove KINGROOT.
I tried to follow youtube regular tutorials, with no help.
I have connected a USB mouse in order to have "free hand" - kingroot options are still don't seems to work.

What version of Kingroot have you used? Removal is under settings (top right hand corner):
V4.1
1. Open KingUser and enter "Settings" menu ( top right of home screen)
2. Enter "Root authorization setting " (second one)
3. You can find "Remove Root permission" option (fourth one)
4. Click it, and KingUser will be removed automatically
V4.8
1. Open KingUser and enter "Sittings" menu ( top right of home screen)
2. You can find "Uninstall" option.
3. Click it, and KingUser will be removed automatically

Agreed. I didn't know they were bricking, sorry. I would guess they use a similar strategy to delete Kingroot. So it would probably end the same way. If a recovery is in the works I'd wait.

Ok so using 4.8.1 if you didn't enable the protect root optimize feature this works.
If you did the optimize under 4.8.1 I'm not seeing a way to relaunch the app to remove it. It only says Force Stop, Clear Cache, and Clear Data under Kingroot for Applications.
Any ideas?

Nope root is gone after the disable. The uninstall is just clean up. But remember you've already disabled amazon updates so you can always kingroot again if desired.
