While not able to obtain s- off at the moment because I'm on 4.4.4 if I root is it possible to remove unwanted apps? I have been using the stock Rom and just changing a few things using xposed and that's all I need to do. But rather not root if I cannot remove apps of my choosing. Also I read somewhere that just unlocking the boot loader and rooting some people are having problems keeping root. Anyone know about this also? Thanks

Don't use a toolkit, and root manually. It'll stick. Then you can go right ahead and remove any app you want. Just don't remove the wrong ones. And of course, make backups through the steps

I do not believe this in itself will work. System is write protected, even with root. You can delete the bloat apps, but when you reboot, they will return.

I missed the stock ROM part.
I know I've removed google apps recently from a custom, (play services because of FCs) and it screwed stuff up. But now thinking back, I'm not sure I did a reboot. I never intended to keep it off, and flashed the ROM back to reinstall PS and fix the FCs.
I think I did a reboot first, but I may not have. From what you say, I probably didn't. Unless it is just the stock bloatware that has read only.

I do recall reading something about doing the opposite, temporarily unrooting in order for the OTA to install properly then enabling root again, but I can't for the life of me remember where or how it was done. It was just a tap of a button is all I can remember. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Actually I was trying to remember OTA Rootkeeper, but it's nice to know of this method too. Once you install OTA Rootkeeper it allows you to temporarily unroot.
Clear and safe temporary rooting?
I have no need for custom ROMs etc, just want to make complete backup, perhaps remove some apps and for curiosity try to run some game data analyzers. Can I do this with temporary rooting and is there some clear and safe howto for the S3 (currently seems to have JB 4.1.2) ?
What I want is to temp-root the phone, do some magic and then after restart use the original rom without root.
(Little OT, but if I do a permanent root and then unroot the phone, will I lose some data? They talk about "wipeout" and it sounds like a permanent lose of data.)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Ari

There is no such thing as "temporary root". You either have it, or you don't. You have the option (through root access) to remove root when you are finished with it.
You will not lose any data. Anyone who says otherwise is wrong.
I didn't answer the how to question because the answers are in the stickies.

Just rooting doesn't prevent updates. You just lose root and have to reapply after update.
Custom recovery means you probably need to download the update file and apply it via the recovery instead of the automatic updater.
Changing or removing system files will almost definitely prevent updates being applied.

hi sfhub, do I need to do
fastboot oem unlock
before doing
fastboot boot twrp.img ?
I've been rooted since day one and gotten ota updates fine.
I use twrp and just make sure to flash supersu each time and call it good. Not a single problem on my end.
Even still if you bork it just flash factory image. It's pretty simple to get out of a pinch. But rooting and ota should work fine as long as you keep stock image. Just reflash supersu each time and you're good to go.

If you aren't already unlocked then, yes.
Most people will already be unlocked though if they are rooted.
fastboot oem unlock process will force a factory reset for security purposes so backup anything important.

There are some backup apps that don't need root, but probably need to restore.
You can also try adb backup, but it may not backup 100% of your stuff.
I'm not the best person to ask on the backup as I always unlock before I do most of the software installs just so I can avoid losing customizations later on.

Yes, very simple, just type
fastboot oem lock
I would advise against doing so unless you plan to return the unit though, as if you ever need to do stuff to your system (even factory restore) then you'd need to unlock again, which would factory reset again.

This mod removes the red text from HBOOT with custom kernels.
It is a simple binary replacement of the text that would normally display with a long string of 0x20 (The character for spaces).
WARNING: THIS IS DANGEROUS, if your phone powers off while you are writing to the hboot, you CAN brick.
S-off, root, and busybox are required
Download:
http://www.cheatersedge.org/android/m8/hboot-no-red-text.img
SHA1: 8619b74b5f22459753498d89de38f47b23518f78
Installation (This can be done in normal boot mode, but booted to TWRP is a MUCH safer bet):
Code:
adb push hboot-no-red-text.img /sdcard/
adb shell
su
dd if=/sdcard/hboot-no-red-text.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p11
reboot

it would take an even more insane dev to make such a zip. I don't think I ever saw one. except maybe one time when one of the phones I was using needed firmware update to be compatible with the new android version, and the new roms included it. though it'd be safer to have it as a separate zip.
For some reason, it's giving me an error
Code:
/sbin/sh: su: not found
while booted into twrp recovery. It has no issue finding it while booted though. Don't want to mess around flashing this hboot without being in recovery. Any ideas?

Tell HTC (Experience Log) is software that runs in the background on your HTC phone, tablet or device (your "Device") that allows HTC Corporation and its affiliates ("HTC") to collect specific data from your Device about how you use your Device ("Usage Data" as described in further detail at "What data does HTC want to collect from your Device?" below). Yes, if you change/remove anything from the system OTA update will fail.
Best way to get around that if you want to run stock is to keep unmodified system backup on your laptop. When you'll receive ota and update fail, just restore system and boot (don't restore data) in recovery. Reboot back to system, flash stock recovery and install ota.

It's the for inflight text.
Did you get a notification on your phone about update or an announcement on t mobile's website? I haven't seen any posts about update nor customer service has any knowledge of it.
I just got an OTA for the update. you can always use LG's update tool to upgrade your software version. I was actually presented with another update this morning. I have no idea what it is. it does however bring the software from swv10q to KVT49L. It is still android 4.4.2 FYI
Is the update rootable (required for SD fix)?
Is there anyway to force this update? I'm on 10M stock

purpledrake is blocked.. not sure if root will stick thru OTA or if manual updating will be required.
bootloader has been updated with the same changes the other G3 "pre-L" updates had (nothing noticeable to end users).

Taking the OTA while already being rooted may allow root to stick through the update process... I cannot confirm that yet and we will need to wait for other users to report back. Your other options are not taking the OTA at all and instead using TWRP to manually update to 10R partition by partition (flashing modem, boot and system).. OR downgrading back to 10C/10M and continue using that. There most likely will not be an updated LG root in the immediate future... no reason to waste a bug when downgrading is still possible... every single G3 and other flagship LG device has root with some firmware version. Perhaps we'll see a new android-wide 4.4.x bug that would work for all.
As for bootloader... no we don't need bump.. we have an unlocked device. Update is not related to a lock.

Taking the OTA while already being rooted may allow root to stick through the update process... I cannot confirm that yet and we will need to wait for other users to report back. Your other options are not taking the OTA at all and instead using TWRP to manually update to 10R partition by partition (flashing modem, boot and system).. OR downgrading back to 10C/10M and continue using that. not that I know of. easiest way will be to just dump the 10R kdz when it comes out and flash the partitions manually in TWRP. I'll probably make a secure flashable bootloader update zip.. and I'll have have the boot, modem and all the other partitions (minus system), as always, up on my codefire folder. Someone else will have to upload/mirror system for the masses.

We can't flash the files in twrp right? I want to flash at least the modem of the new build. What else is important to flash?

I see they are .IMG files so most likely you'll have to use adb...I know its a generic response but the best way to find out how on that is to google "push modem .img using adb" and it should have a link directing you back here to XDA. I'm not at my PC right now....I have all the commands saved in note pad on the pc
