ATT NOTE 4 phantom touches and screen dead spots - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 4

I have had this happen a few times, especially after texting. The lower part of he screen becomes no responsive. Other times I will open an app and another will open before it and that app is no where near each other.
Just wondering if anyone else has seen this. Probably going to factory reset and try again, and see if these issues come back.
I've had to pull the battery out several times to get the screen to respond.

[Q] Dead spot at top of screen

Right around the "Clear" for notifications, panning left to right, I cannot touch.
For about a month and a week or so, my touch screen has been acting really weird, and hasn't been responding to touches, locking up, phantom clicking, and spazzing out. More recently, about the last 2 weeks its gotten really bad and makes the phone unusable for a bit. Usually the issue clears if I turn off the screen but a couple days ago two areas came up where I couldn't touch at all. One of them went away but the other is about 1/4" inch tall, going from left to right across the screen about 1/3" down that I can no touch (like to clear notifications).
I've tried flashing new ROMs, rebooting, nand back ups, battery pulls, etc. It's a hardware issue I'm guessing related to the screen separation issue. My screen separation isn't very much, but when I touch the bottom left edge of the glass, I get phantom clicks around the lower middle part of my screen, and that some times locks up the screen.
I know that it's related to hardware, but I was wondering if anyone else has this issue, or knows some type of solution besides returning it or repairing the screen? Or if you know a good way to approach getting a new phone, that'd be welcome.
Why can't you return it under warranty? Clearly that sounds like a hardware issue thats easy to reproduce at the store.

Oh yeah, very easy to reproduce, but my dad when he got our phones didn't feel the need to get any type of warranty or anything...

Your phone comes with a 1 year hardware warranty. Take it in and show them the problem.
Does it now? I didn't know that, thanks. I can just take it into a Sprint store and ask them about it right? I don't need to involve HTC?
Did you ever resolve this? Mine just started doing the exact same thing.

Hate to bump an old thread, but I'm having the same problem, although I've only noticed it after rooting. Could it be a problem with the ROMs?

Anyone else with random menu key issue?

I've been having this issue for a few weeks now and it's only seemingly getting worse. HOWEVER.. I think I have an idea of what may be going on.
Can a bad USB cable cause this issue? Maybe some kind of static electricity build up or something. If anyone else out there has this issue can you weigh in? Are you using any damaged or 3rd party cables? My problems started around teh time i orderd a (samsung) micro usb cable for use in my car with a cig lighter power converter thingy that has a usb port on it.
to test I wiped the battery stats in CWM and it actually seemed to help.. until last night when I used the new cable in the car again and it went haywire. I wiped the battery again and ill avoid using the new cable to see if it helps any..
I happened to catch it on video last night so I'll post a link up later. I'd like to get to the bottom of this since sprint wants to charge me to replace the device -___- .
I dont see anything in there about what the actual random "problem" is. only problem I have with my menu button is that my "phone" icon is right above it and with my case on the phone it makes it harder for my fat thumb to just hit menu and I sometimes launch the dialer...
so uhhh.. what's the "problem?"
The menu key will randomly activate without me actually touching the screen. Like I said, I have it on video and I'll post it as soon as I get home so everyone can share thoughts on it.
it's exactly what it sounds like. I'll be using the device, sometimes just reading and sometimes not even holding the device at all (as demonstrated in the vid) and the menu key will activate rapidly and very randomly.

Here's the video as promised. Taken last night. It happened today as well even after flashing the lastest stock ek13.

Well, the Video is down. Id like to see if its the same problem as I have.
I believe It may be. Its quite annoying. The Menu Button just activates. I always assume that its just Oily or dirty, something is making it do it. But even after a wipe it does it and Only with the Menu Key. Not Home, Back, or Search. I also use the Matte Black back TPU case, no difference on or off. Cant find a Rhyme or reason.
Edit:
For the record, im also on FC24.
haven't seen the video but I noticed during LOS testing when the phone came out that I got random menu pop ups in low signal areas.

Amusing, it did it when I hit "post reply".
I get it off and on, be damned if I can figure out how to replicate. Just does it.
I was starting to think it was my screen protector, since it started around that time. Happens plugged in and unplugged. Can go days without, then it just happens. I do know it only started for me when I flashed ICS.
Have you tried reflashing and seeing if the problem still exists. Last week my phone was randomly doing stuff like that. I did a full wipe and reflashed and everything has been fine since.
I've flashed several ROMs and have had it.
I can say I have had it only on ICS, some more than others. Never tracked it closely, but have had it on the homescreen, browser. Only 2 times since Fd02.
Wish I knew how to make it happen. I will say signal/battery levels have no effect.
its likely there's a short or something. I would take it into sprint. There's no reason not to. If they can't fix it you'll get a new phone.

I just got a refurb because of a blue led of death and mine is doing this as well. I've tried ICS roms, stock EL29, and even did a complete factory reset after flashing back to stock EL29 to no avail. It mainly occurs while I'm on a call or texting. It's driving me nuts and if it continues it's going back to Sprint.
I have been testing a theory relates to this.
Last night it was pretty bad, so I turned the setting for the hard buttons lights to "always off".
Hasn't happened since.
Only reason I tried this is that I noticed they came on right before the menu went nuts.
As I've said before, I don't think mine is a short since I NEVER had this occur when on gingerbread. Others may be, but I'm nearly certain mine is not.
If anyone else can try this to see if it does help, would be nice to see.

Good idea. I'll try the always on setting and see if that helps as well, that way we'll cover both ways.
Doesn't work. Had it come back k last night.
Not sure what to try.
Mine did it a few times yesterday and I noticed when it did either the gps was trying to connect or it was trying to connect to wifi or 3g. Maybe a coincidence or not, who knows, but it's something else to look at.
My phone did the same thing, it isn't the USB cable nor the screen protector. Its a bug when signal drops below a certain level. However, I believe its a touchwiz issue as I have yet to have it happen on any AOSP rom, input anyone?

Note 2 restarts when set down on a hard surface or tapped on the back

I just got my note 2 yesterday. Whenever I set it down on a hard surface a little bit abruptly. It restarts!
And there's a certain place in the back of the device I can tap to restart it.
Is this normal? Are these devices really that fragile????
Mines an international one from France so warranty is going to be a pain ughhh...
Thanks!

sounds like you got a bad unit.
It could be the battery is shifting around when you set it down hard.
Normally I'd just say send it back, but if a warranty claim is going to be problematic, you could try padding the back cover with some paper to hold the battery in place a bit tighter and see if this 'fixes' your issue.

Dave

Just done same test three times with my unit and it remained on, no restarts. You just got yours...so maybe you are still in the exchange period. I would get an exchange because it is not normal behaviour. You should have no problem getting an exchange. Just try to avoid telling the retailer that you've also been getting the problem when setting it down on a hard surface 'a little bit abruptly'. They will gladly play the "you've damaged it" card

If you can't get it exchanged, then use a thin tape or something of the sort to hold the battery in place.

You know the "Chat On" piece of paper that you got when you purchase the device. Look in to the box it's probably still there. It will finally serve its purpose

I still experience it every now and then but that is only when i literally do hit the phone on a hard surface ....
but this should fix the "a little bit abruptly" issue that I had.
Hope it helps
You'll have a hard time transferring files through Sbeam since that requires tapping two phones.

Wow this seems to have worked, this is the first day it hasn't rebooted since I got it! I did notice the battery moved around slightly when I opened it up, so I'm guessing that was the issue.
Do you think leaving it in there is dangerous? Like it will overheat and catch on fire or something?

So I didn't start having this problem until almost 2 years of owning the phone, but since then, it's been happening quite frequently. Sometimes it restarts and sometimes it simply turns off (this is quite annoying being that I miss many texts/work emails).
Well I decided to do some research and I came across some people saying it could be the battery coming loose for a split second.
I decided to try folding a piece of paper a couple centimeters (about the depth of the battery) and jamming it under the battery to push it up against the terminals. Much to my surprise, my phone hasn't restarted when bumped since!!! (Fingers crossed!!!)
I hope this helps, although I know this is a little bit late for most people, being that the Note 4 is already coming out. Better late than never!

Fingure Print Sensor Not Working As Good? Anyone?

What's up guys? Has anyone else noticed that the fingure print Sensor barley works. For me, it usually takes all 4 attemps and I have to end up putting my code in. Once upgraded to Pie I factory reset and started from scratch. Seemed to be happening for a while now, maybe since about 4 months ago? IDK, I know of no fixes. Anyone else experience the same thing?

Mine use to work perfectly, every time, then they did an update where it didn't turn the screen on instantly anymore, maybe 1 or 2 months after that, it just started to reject my print 9 out of 10 times.

I am having a similar issue.
Not quite as bad as 9 out of 10 rejections, but its definitely about 3 or 4 tries before it works. Used to be flawless.
The sensor is not dirty either, and fingerprints are not that old. Going to try redoing them now though see if that helps.
Mine is much slower than when I first got the phone, it is sad really that updates have ruined the sensor. This is the first year that I am not pre-ordering a new google phone. I am intrigued by the Pixel 3 (not XL), it would be kinda nice to go back to a smaller sized phone.
Cleaning with alcohol and deleting/re-adding my prints seemed to fix the issue. Will report more later down the road.

I was researching a fix for this, today.
The number one suggestion was cleaning the sensor.
For me it is sporadic failure of one or two tries and then I purposefully position my finger as perfectly at possible and it will usually recognize by the third try.
Although, today, after reading search results, I picked the screen with the power button and was able to unlock with fingerprint ten times while trying to place my finger awkwardly or not perfect.
Go figure...
I still haven't gotten around to breaking out the alcohol.
This problem started for me with the Pie upgrade. Others have posted about it also. Re-registering a print or cleaning does not help and is not the issue even though often the message given for not working is a dirty sensor. I have just gotten used to it. Works more than 1/2 the time and the others I just go old fashioned and enter my code.
I just went into ABOUT PHONE and sent feedback for unreliable fingerprint sensor, since pie update and requested an update to fix.
The alcohol seemed to help a bit. Most of the time my fingure is registered. Still not nearly as good as it was when I got the phone.

1cm thick dead line on touch display

Hi, just noticed that a bit of a upper display's screen touch is dead and won't respond to touch input. It started I think 4 days ago. I don't remember dropping the phone or anything similar like that. Is there a trick to fix it or its simply dead and it won't recover? I know that if that happened on my old nexus 7 2012, cold restarting fixed it, but it's not working with my HTC 10. I can kinda work around it, it's a spot I don't use too often (although I can't check format Cache in TWRP )
So, any meaningful idea? I can't afford to replace the screen for the second time in a year...
There's screenshot of the line, from left to right whole part.

I've got the same problem.
For a while I managed to get away with zapping it w/ igniter from a MAP gas torch. Now it's really dead
Basically, you remove the piezoelectric igniter from any lighter / torch and zap the screen.

Sure, did it about 3 times, lasted for a couple months each time, i tried a couple more times afterwards and there is no more improvement.
Its time to replace the LCD for me.
