Bad Photos with stock camera? ( comparision)

I've noticed that the stock htc camera is bad for taking photos
when i had Acer liquid with acer stream camera photos quality was really good
now i'm asking: is a software issue or what? also liquid with stock camera was bad,but only changing the application,the quality was a lot better
any suggestion? which parameters do you use with desire ? ( like saturation,brightness,iso etc)
Attacched photos to see differences ( sorry aren't 100% the same but you can notice the difference)

Just to know (I have pretty the same problem).
Try to make a photo without the back cover.

Camera indeed sucks. So what other camera applications are available?
Retro Camera and FX Camera. Those are not really for replacement.

Yes, I can clearly see the difference with and without the cover. Especially when making videos but also with photos.

Would be great to port camera from other devices.. also the google camera ( source camera) is better as i saw.. is possibile to port to all roms?
the camera of acer stream is awesome with awesome settings,but don't know if will be possible to ort to desire..

Why this and how to solve?

Here you can see the difference with and without the backcover. For me, it's because of the plastic used for the lens. It spoil out using the phone with time.
You can try to remove the plastic or replace the cover. I have not found a good solution yet. For now... I just remove the cover when needed (thanks god I don't make a lot of photos)

a friend of mine was at a clockmaker. He just drills out the plastic cover and glues a saphire-glass in, now its a scratch free and HQ camera cover. Costs are around 20 Euro including work (it lasts 10 Minutes). But you need and old-style clock-maker with its own repair-shop.

I like Vignette alot. Well worth the money, really professional-ish look & feel to it.

aint that using the same plastic cover??
Mine aint scratched but I still notice a different without cover so replacing it with glass seems to be only option other then removing cover everytime you wanna take a pic/vid.

Your pictures seem much more to what I am experiencing taking photos. Hardly(if any) difference cover on or off. I did notice there isn't a lot of color in your pictures.

Tbh, I don't think having a tiny smudge on the cover affects the quality that much as andycted demonstrated. The real limitation is that after all, its a phone camera.
Try using different camera app's with some image-enhancing effects. I recommend Vignette, try it out!

I'm inside, in a very drab cloudly light coming from the window. Indeed the default settings for the camera (stock froyo) lack a bit of saturation, I forgot to set it to +1.
I remember noticying quite a lot of difference and thinking that since my protector is scratched, that was the cause. Turns out it was greasy on the outside, as well as the inside, as I remove the cover every other day to change battery
EDIT: I've added a couple of shots with +1 and +2 saturation and one where the autoflash went off

For me, also your pics lacks of shaprness. You'll notice it better with hi-def images.

just bought Vignette to see, I think is great apllication and take better photos than stock camera
There are a lot of optimization and i really like it

I didn't take the pain to change the settings, or to take great pics, it's a chair and a bottle ! it was just in order to compare lens on/off photos, in every day conditions and the difference isn't all that great. My lens is scratched too.
Stock camera is ugly to see, dodgy in some stuff, but has a ton of functionality. I can't, even remotely, be called a photographer, but I had some fun while going for a walk some minutes ago.

The sky was very grey and light quite dim, so I tried to play with exposure and saturation, burning the sky and pretty much everything else in the process. A couple shoots aren't bad though. Try to guess which are with and without lens cover hehe.

HTC January 2012 update screwed up my Trophy's camera

Ok so I've been noticing this for a while now AFTER the update (HTC Jan 2012; 7.10.8107 update), really it is AFTER the update. My Trophy has been protected with a gel case ever since I bought it and it is in mint condition. Camera lens was protected with a thin layer of screen protector (I used a puncher to make the protector for the lens), now I just removed this because I thought this was the cause.
I won't be posting the pictures here, but I will provide links because it'll make the post box huge with pictures and stuff.
So this is the photo before update (this was taken late December last year):

These pictures were taken at different times, but nearly the same conditions since its summer here in NZ. Although I wouldn't this as a factor since every photo I take now after the update looks like sh*t no matter what condition it may be, even macro shots, when taking texts from laptop LCDs and tv's, it still appear as white-noisy blur picture.

See this was taken indoors in broad daylight, same conditions as above photos. It doesn't seem to be too noticeable until you really look at the edges (eg. my necklace, or the edge of our fraps)
Notice how the after-update photo has more noise and white and bluriness compared to the before-update. I have taken more after-update photos and they seem to be the same whatever distance you have between the camera and the object. It will look like it has been layered with white glow noise. Also the pink blob is still there when taking white objects.

did you find a fix yet? because im experiencing the same issues

new camera issue - hazy brights

Sorry to beat this dead horse but I believe this issue is new..
When taking a photo outdoors, with a bright sky and dark subject, the bright area bleeds over into the dark and causes a hazy effect. I believe this might be due to a reflection off the chrome bezel or plastic lens cover. example: http://i.imgur.com/70oG7.jpg
Has anyone else noticed this? I've spent the past few weeks in washington/oregon with this phone and sooo many shots have been ruined this way.
Edit: I believe it is a problem with reflections off the chrome bezel and the plastic lens cover, maybe along with the lens having no hood cover as the body is so thin. Using my other hand to shade the lens while taking pictures seems to fix the issue.

could be. i've notice this as well. a few things work for me. actually wiping the lens to make sure there are no smudges that could cause reflection. also putting the cam in macro mode.

camera issues

hi guys! im noticed the camera takes horrible photos resolution!!!! i was disney today and i cant take anyphotos because all of them was taken blurry and low resolution. but with the front camera the photos seems good resolution and more clearly.. is very annoying... anybody has the same problem???
i try with all setting and nothing change and the resolution settin is on max (8Megapixels)

Try these two things, clean the lens & either turn in or turn off the anri-shake. I was getting all kinds of lens flares and didn't even realize the lens was covered in my finger oils. Turning the anti shake was bad but after I turned it off then back in the pictures seem to have gotten better. BTW this phone has one if the worse possible placements of a flash and lens. I've had the flash reflect off my finger and it messes with the photo. GL hope your problem was like mine.

Mine was a bit blurry as well and then as I looked more closely at the rear lens I found that the guy who installed my Screen protector on the front also installed a protector on the rear as well and it covered the rear lens. Upon taking that screen protector off the rear lens the pictures were very clear and had no blur on them. I had wondered why at first the pictures were clear and then turned blurry after.

I'm wondering if my phone is defected or is HTC serious about this camera? This takes pictures like a phone from 2008 or prior. I'm talking blackberry pre 2010 era wtf!? Almost every picture snapped is blurry and not at all crisp. I have to switch it to manual and mess with a lot of settings to maybe get a decent shot (maybe). All m8 owners, how do you deal with this f'n thing? Everything else about the phone is near perfect then there is this deal breaker. What were they thinking?

Try downloading a 3rd party app and see if it's a physical or software issue you're having. It might help.

Tried with Google camera. Was worse. You own this phone? How are your pics?

I've very recently had a moto X and N5...and now the M8. I find the M8 blows those both away. For what I do with it anyway.
But I learnt the hard way, missing out on good pics and a video (all blurry in the dim light and all the dancing) at my daughters dance recital.... to bring my $99 Kodak and an inexpensive camcorder I recently got, anywhere I go where I fully know I want great pics and videos.
All phone cameras are pretty crap compared to cheap cameras and camcorders. That's life. ?
You'll always be disappointed at some point when you miss something important with your cheap phone camera.

I agree. You meant the m8 blows away the moto x camera? I don't know about that but I know the nexus 5 camera was better than this by far. A little disappointed but everything else is great.

Well, for me, I'm thoroughly impressed compared to all my past devices anyway.
But I still will never count on my phone to capture important moments. Never again.

My iPhone 5S takes much better pictures than my M8.

What defines better? The M8 can take pictures in dim lighting perfect whereas they are not even viewable on other phones including the 5S.
I would rather be able to take pictures in ANY setting than print out a huge picture.
IMO, HTC is brilliant in making sure their phones are able to take a picture ANYWHERE. Other phones struggle badly in low light to point if being useless.
Also, this is the first phone I have ever had where people who take pictures for me actually comment on the quality. Don't fall for the MP gimmick/bandwagon, HTC knows what they are doing.
There is clearly something wrong with your camera if the pictures are blurry. Are you talking about flares or blur? If you removed the AR coating of the camera, then you're going to get horrible flares. HTC had the film to aid in reducing glare but people are removing it which is puzzling.

Anywhere? I am struggling to find one place or situation it does excel. All the pictures are really poor again reminds me of pics my old Bold Blackberry used to take. Low light, outside, indoors.. it's really bad. Iphone 5s and s5 are much better at taking pics anywhere, including low light compared to this phone. I been trying all night to take pics and find even a few that are more than decent. Was the HTC One like this or better?

I would suggest you remove the coating on your camera lenses and see if the pictures quality have improved.

I moved this thread to Q&A because it's really a question. Please keep the discussion focused on how to take better pictures or otherwise overcome the shortcomings of the camera. If this becomes a bash HTC or compare devices thread, I'll have to close it and I don't really like doing that.

Do NOT do this. It removes the anti-reflective coating on it and will produce horrible glare. It seems HTC put it there to compensate for increased lighting from the UltraPixels. If its blurry, then it is certainly defective. Take a look at the camera thread in the general section to see how clear pictures are suppose to be.

i got all happy thinking there might have been a plastic peel off on it.. nope:/

I don't think it is defective. I will keep trying a few things, I mean this is a 4 mega pixel camera, so the pictures are probably not meant to be zoomed in on or anything. I like this phone and prefer not to swap it out.

If its blurry, then it had to be defective. Pictures should be coming out like they are in the pictures thread.

Known and common issue, the coating starts to scratch very easily (sometimes within weeks), which horribly blurs the photos. Removing using a variety of methods (toothpaste is common) is recommended IMO. Some folks have gotten warranty repair, but others have not (think HTC cited physical wear and tear). And who is the say the new lens cover won't just do the same after a few weeks?

Pics with the M8 are pretty sharp under a variety of light conditions. Although its pretty subjective, many will say this phone is comparable to other current devices. If you have a fundamental issue of blurry photos, look at the camera lens and see if the coating is scratched, as I've mentioned. It should be pretty obvious to see, if this is the case.

Can you post up some samples, then we can help you. There are many people who love bashing HTC because of what paid reviewers have written/said about the camera.. If you always use your camera in "idiot" mode or "Auto" mode as the manufacturers call it, then your pictures will always look rubbish.
have a go at using ISO, EV, Shutter Speed and WB, they are there for a reason..look up basic photography and learn to understand light and how they work.
To me, the M8 walks over the crappy S5 camera.. then goes back for a 2nd go..

The coating scratches if you do not take care of it. It's as sensitive as the AR coating on glasses or camera lenses. If its scratched, then removing it is the only way. The best way to approach this is to take good care of the AR coating. Removing the coating will cause horrible flare/glare.
The AR coating is there for a reason. This is nothing new in lens manufacturing....DONT remove it.

Because a few flares under easily avoidable conditions (don't take pics directly at a light source) is greatly preferable to every picture being horribly blurred.
I held out removing the coating as long as I could (about 3 months of ownership), since I didn't like the idea of intentionally removing it with an abrasive (even a mild one). But not what I have, the image quality is greatly improved, and glare/flares are not an issue.
How would you know if the coating makes such a difference if you've never removed yours? Coating like this don't make as much a difference as you seem to think. IMO, actually little or (more likely) no difference.

No, it really won't.
I don't "baby" my phone. But I take pretty good care of it, and it was scratched enough to ruin picture after 3 months. I use a TPU case, that doesn't cover the camera, but the cutouts provide some protection. The phone is usually in my pocket (never anything else in that pocket) or sitting on my desk/counter.
Unless you are surgically careful with your phone, its going to happen to yours, too. Its just a matter of time.
