Sprint wifi update - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sprint sent an OTA update that addresses calling over WiFi. Has anyone looked at it to see if root will be affected?
Yes, yes no OTA, but would still like to know. I'm guessing this will have to be loaded before Lollypop.

This OTA breaks root, and prevents all the existing root methods from working. If you have TWRP, you can install flash ZV6 that way. Search the Sprint G3 forums.

Yeah, that sucks. guess it's time to load TWRP. So much for keeping it simple.

You know you want TWRP

tethering after T999UVLJ4?

Was just wondering if there was anyone that uses the phone that is not rooted and after the update still been able to tether with the changing of the APN in the device settings?
Only reason I ask is I have a One S as well that just after the update I can no longer change the APNs the device switches back on its own.
Opps so sorry this belongs in q a
if you can please move.
subscribing for a response - i just cancelled my update to hear if the update will be an issue
I'm tethered to it right now.
How are you guys tethering without root? Foxfi?
Oh crap I'm sorry, totally didn't see the not rooted part.
Make my own APN in the settings of the to bypass the software on the phone and on my computer changed the user agent string of my browser to that which is on my phone. Can also use a tablet one too.
That works as long as the phone allows you to change APN setting.
The previous version of software on the galaxy does allow you to set and use your own APN.
I'm just not sure about this new version.
Don't really want to update and lose that ability again like on the one s I have too.

I'm considering rooting to tether as I have to travel a lot in the upcoming months. What guide did you use?
Did you have to unroot to get the update then update then root again? What's the flash counter?
Lastly, what app do you use? Free Wifi Tether?
Thanks! I can PM if you want.
Dumb Question (noob)
I'm now rooted on UVLH2 if I update to the new release today, will it remain rooted or must I re-root, and is there a different root procedure or do I again use the same root process?
Sorry If I'm posting a question in the wrong place.
Thank you!

I rooted mine before UVLH2 & after the update root was gone with counter set to 0. So, I guess same will happen for a new update & you'll have to root again.
By the way I checked for software update over data connection and got the message " Access to the software update service is provided to users in the order in which they request it. Try later."
What does that mean?

Phone: T-mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 16+32(class 10) gig
ROM: Stock (not sure for how long!)
Rooted: Of course Yes!
Past companions:
HTC Touch Diamond
Nokia 1110
Motorola C155
Try the APN trick method and change your computers user agent to that of the phone.
Works before the update I know that just not sure if will work after the update.
As far as upgrade from rooted? If the update comes thru and you have stock recovery should update ok but will probably lose root.
Anyone yet try this after the latest update.
No one has tried this after the update at all?

U do loose root but you can gain it back the same way you originally gained root. I just tried the free wifi app from the app store and it worked flawless. Hope it helps.
I never had root on mine (yet)
But do the tether work around and I also use with another provider.
That after the update to my One S I can't even change the APN for use on the other provider.
But I did go ahead and do the update to the Galaxy S 3 to UVLJ4 and not rooted can still change APN for use with other providers and can do the APN trick for free tethering yet.
tethering works for me .... mess around with the settings

Can I root Note 8 (N5110) and still get stock updates?

I want to know if I will forever lose the ability to install stock updates once I root my device. Can I "unroot" it in the future to seamlessly install stock updates? I don't want to mess with this too much as I want to rely on it for notes.
Yes. Use OTA rootkeeper to backup your root, then just temp unroot, install update, and restore root. Catch is, if you make any system changes that you can only make with root permissions, you'll likely not be able to get OTA updates. So just keep your system stock.

If I were to modify the Snote app, I guess that may mess with the OTA update right? What if I backup the unmodified app and then replace the modified one with the unmodified one when I want to do an OTA update, I guess that should be fine?

Depends on what you mean by modify. If you remove built in apks, yes, it'll keep you from getting OTA updates. If your modification requires root permissions, you run the chance of not getting OTA updates. Otherwise, you shouldn't have issues. In any case, restoring the stock app should allow you to get updates assuming nothing else is changed.

Are there any "non-root" mods for the S-note? Or perhaps can I install another version of s-note as a "non-system" app? I want to keep rooting as the last resort. Specifically, I am looking into modifying the background of a template.
I know I can manually choose a different background for the note, but I noticed that the option to insert a voice memo and the button to insert any object vanish after I change the background. See attached pictures. Is there a fix for this?

I don't have an answer for you unfortunately as my use of s note is very basic. I hope someone else can answer your questions.
If you root at all you lose OTA even if you do nothing and unroot. (I just went through this) Have you looked at any other apps that offer similar functionality to SNote or are you looking for multivendor? I know I we tried Papyrus and SPen voice but they were overkill for my needs.

Absolutely false. I have been through probably 5 different OTA updates on my stock, rooted Note 8, and restored root with OTA rootkeeper every time. You're doing something wrong. I have never flashed anything to the device, and once you start messing with recoveries, etc, you are no longer stock and will not get OTA updates.

Once I used the ToolKit to root, without a custom recovery, any attempt to update showed as altered and unavailable for updates even though I didn't flash anything. Whatever ToolKit did, triggered the need for triangle away on my Note 8. Moot point now as I have no plans to root again but if I do, I will look into OTA rootkeeper.

I don't know what the ToolKit does or what else you used it to do or what else you did with the system after rooting, but just plain root does not alter the system. Even apps like Adfree that modify the hosts file don't cause the system to be altered. If you remove system APKs though, that will do it. Like I said, I am still rooted despite all of the updates that I received. And I do not temp unroot prior to searching for updates, I temp unroot once the update is already downloaded.

My concern was how to obtain a custom background for the notes in S-note. I did it using the "change background" feature but I did so with the "memo" template. And the memo template doesn't have certain features like inserting images, audio memo etc. Given that I am new to Samsung and touchwiz I was unaware about this. I fixed this "problem" by putting my custom background on one of the other templates...
The only other thing I need root for is for removing Ads. BUT, thankfully there is the "Adblockplus" android app on their website that allows me to do this WITHOUT root! :highfive: On Android, nothing is impossible!
Unroot
I have rooted my device as well. What i want to ask is, is there a way to completely unroot and have the device check whether there are any updates?
I did use the unroot function but when I checked for any updates, it told me that the device had been modified..
thx

Sounds like you modified the system in some way. Only way out is to unmodify it ie: ODIN or use kies to go back to stock. Might as well just use kies to install the latest update.

When that happened to me, I couldn't even use Kies to recover so I used the ToolKit and triangle away to get a stock ROM on it.
I have the same problem. As far as I know I've only done a standard root, but OTA says the device has been modified and Kies says my firmware version doesn't support upgrading. Obviously something has modified something
As I'm in Australia we probably won't get a 4.2.2 upgrade anyway so at the moment I wouldn't have anything to upgrade to even if I could...

If you first use supersu option to unroot you can can get ota. Been there done that.
There is a post on this forum somewhere. Can't remember where, but it can be done if you follow the instruction in the post.
Do a search of the forums to find it. It's there!

[Q] Updated OTA 4.4.2 - Lost root...now what?

Hi all, sorry if this question is a bit pre-mature given the update just came out. I was rooted prior to the update and had VooDoo OTA installed. Long story short, the update went horrible but I was able to recover to stock and receive the update again (which worked fine the second time).
In all of this, I did lose root and was wondering if there is a way to regain it now or do I need to wait for someone much smarter then me to figure this out? Ultimately, all I really need root for is wireless tether.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Also, off topic and purely for personal reasons, which wireless tether do you use? I seemed to have issues making any work properly when I was rooted and running stock ROM.
Sadly, bootloader is locked.
For wireless tether, I was just using the stock tether but did the "entitlement check" change to use it. Need root to do it again.
Given that I have a locked bootloader does it mean I'm out of lock period or just until someone figures out how to get past it (assuming this happens).

As far as I know there isn't a way to root the latest OTA on a locked bootloader. So yes, it would seem you are out of luck.

[Q] How to Update Firmware After Root?

I am about to take the plunge and root the LG G3. It's been a couple weeks and I don't see any hardware faults so I would like to root and then debloat.
I can find some debloating threads here, but my main question was. . .how will I need to update after I have rooted the device
Say, I root today and then tomorrow AT&T releases an update for my device. Since I have rooted, I can't take the OTA update. But, is there a place that LG posts those updates? Can I download an update somewhere and and manually update with a specific windows application?
Or, will my updates only come in the form of ROMs after I have rooted?
I have the European D855 which was rooted using Towelroot. It has taken OTA updates perfectly twice now. Had to reinstall Xposed, but that was to be expected.

I'm not sure if it works the same way with the AT&T variant, but thanks for telling me your experience
It seems that some people reported being able to receive OTA despite being rooted, and some can't. I am one of those who can't. However, I have always been able to update using the LG PC Suite software even when I am rooted. That part I think is quite safe. Only issue is you will lose root after you've updated, in which case you will have to re-root. This may not be possible if the upgraded firmware has patched the exploit.

Verizon OTA 11C

Has anyone done the OTA update from verizon?
I expect that I will lose root, but can I get it back the same way I did with 10B?
Dont do it.
I got my G3 about 4 days ago, and i immediately updated it. I think i found a way to flash back to 10b so i can root. As of now, i am unable to root with stomproot, ioroot, and purpledrake (or whatever its called). I have no idea what would happen if a rooted g3 with 10b upgraded to 11c.
Maybe towel root would work

Please refer to your Verizon G3 forums - http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/general. There are several threads there that talk about the OTA update, why it is not good to take OTA updates, and luckily for you a method for getting back to 10b.
Consider yourself lucky. There is no guarantee that you will be able to downgrade after taking an OTA update. Blindly taking updates is a great way to loose root and bump in the future.
Almost every thread that shows you how to root and bump tells you to not take updates, c'mon guys they are telling you to protect your device.

I didnt realize how for the community has come on custom flashing since I got my phone and rooted it. Definitely need to spend some time seeing what we got.
I did the update last night. I can confirm that the update did not remove my root and in fact the update only was to make the phone run more smoothly.

It didn't remove root, but it is currently unrootable. This means that if you should loose root somehow, you will not be able to get it back. I HIGHLY suggest you go to the Verizon G3 forum and read all the threads there. You can get all the benefits of the update without loosing the root method via the methods there.
I don't know how many times this has been said, but apparently there are still a ton of dumb people out there.......
NEVER TAKE AN OTA UPDATE IF YOU LIKE BEING ROOTED OR IF YOU EXPECT TO RETAIN THE ABILITY TO BUMP
