Greetings all,
I would like to ask those who have Amazon Fire phone with software version 3.6.8 .. which android is this new fire OS is based on ?
I know older versions such as 3.5.0 and 3.5.1 are based on Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2
hopefully the new version is based on Android Kitkat 4.4 at least.
the reason I'm asking because starting from Kitkat, android started supporting the colored emoji. prior that, no colored emoji
You only have to take a look in build.prop.
3.6.8 is based on 4.2.2, too.
Fireos (sangria) is based on 4.4 and will be published around January. (Google knows more about it)
Thank you for your reply ..
I don't have the device now. I'm expecting it to be in front of my door tomorrow .. thats why I'm asking
Fire OS 4.0 and up are kitkat - not released to public / beta (know frm friend who works for that team)
They have kitkat version Fire OS ready but because the phone flopped, I dunno the future of that effort. I am just hoping my friends in the Lab126 office don't get fired/laid off. KitKat if released for Kindle tablets, should become ready for this Firephone too.

I just got my Fire phone on Black Friday to replace my aging Nexus 4. I personally like the gesture-based UI on the Fire. The carousel could be improved by making it more customizable by the user, but otherwise, I'm enjoying the phone. The Amazon App store is pretty decent. Maybe Amazon will continue supporting users for a while yet if their fire sale manages to clear out inventory quickly.
I'm pretty confident that OS 4.0 (KitKat) will be released as promised, if only to enable the Bluetooth LE that they promised to enable when they released the phone. Whether or not they support the phone past that release, and release a version based on android 5 is anyone's guess. The hardware would support it easily, so it just a matter if Amazon thinks it is important enough to maintain the loyalty of its early adopters or not.

In Q4, 2011, Google intend to combine Honeycomb for tables and Gingerbread for smart phones into one universal OS. Ice Cream Sandwich.
Developers will be able to account for all form factors within this same version of the OS. This seems to be the end of the OS fragmentation that has plagued the Android system since its release! The announcement has been made around the same time that Windows Phone manufacturers Microsoft announce a universal OS in the form of Windows 8, and Apple's iOS5, which means universal operating systems are the way of the future. But the question is, will the Defy get some?

We may not even get Gingerbread (the leaked one is supposedly for developing for the defy2). I wouldn't get my hopes high for Icecream at all.

no way man! telus just released a version of the defy a couple of months ago.we've got at least two more years of love coming!
i am hoping as well... but here in indonesia, not even gingerbread
There's absolutely no point in getting excited till there's even confirmation of getting Gingerbread.
Right, Q4 huh... so that's end of the year. Then add a few months of delays and small scale release, that's mid 2012. Then add a year on that for motorola being slowpokes with new releases.... that's mid 2013. I don't know about you, but as much as I love my defy I'll probably be having a new phone around then rather than getting excited over what will at that point already be old news.

Man you said the right situation in motorola process , BUT even if they didn't release it for defy , they might unlock the bootloader, like samsung galaxy S2.
tAKE lOOK Here:
Samsung Sends Free Galaxy S2 To Hackers For Inspiration
According to the company, it has already sent a free Galaxy S2 to the CyanogenMod team as part of the plan.
http://www.itproportal.com/2011/06/13/samsung-sends-free-galaxy-s2-hackers-inspiration/#8
so i hope we can wait for something cool later time.
It's still possible, when CyanogenMod 8 comes...
Maybe this?
Ok so maybe Motorola will launch a new Defy. This time more powerful. So we will buy it and have that with running Android 4 and this one as an old phone with CM version of the new Android tweaked for it.
I personally use 2 phones. Primary smartphone Defy and secondly a phone only Nokia (no camera, radio, internet). But i would like using 2 smartphones. Actually that is the future. So in my case i can wait for a Defy2 and than keep this as well
Keep in mind that a smartphone's life is somewhere between 2-4 years. Battery/hardware and software wise . But who knows the Defy can prove even more resistant ....

The current fragmentation issue has nothing to do with Tablet and Handset form factors. I understood fragmentation is about manufacturers putting too much layers on top of OS to make their own version of Android i.e. Sense, TouchWhiz, Motorla, and so on.
User experience is a science, now imagine how much damage these manufacturers do to an OS that no one would want to learn how to use them. That is why many people would want to use handsets from the same manufacturer. Android introduced a new market and after few years everyone involved realising the cons and pros of it as no one had the experience working in such market model before.
My prediction is... Most manufacturers will give up putting their own layers for three main reasons:
1. Manufactures eventually can't catch up with the progress of Android's development and it would become a complex and expensive process to have.
2. The cost of hardware will significantly will be reduced, that means smaller manufactures giving stock Android start stealing market from the big boys.
3. Future Android versions would become rich in user experience that the cost of putting layers on top of already a rich interface is no longer justifiable.
and hopefully with this, release of OS will be much faster due to the more vanilla usage of Android instead of each company spending time and money on 'fragmenting' the OS....and devs like the MIUI and CM guys (plus all the other solo devs) can start porting it over much faster and easier.....and leave the fragmenting and customising to the community!
true
but if each developer releasing their own os like miui and cmd and etc you will never have stability in the os.
thats why i always stick to the official os.
((consider Camera issues and AGps fixes plus notworking parts in os properly))
Ice Cream Sandwich will be released this October/November.. There's even a Nexus S shipped on EBay which has ICS!!!!! Here it is!!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3Pb6IyFvfg&feature=player_embedded
I'm really hoping to see it on Motorola Defy!!
Btw I noticed that all Android versions have a codename based on deserts..
Cupcake 1.5
Donut 1.6
Eclair (a cake) 2.1
Froyo (frozen yogurt) 2.2
Gingerbread 2.3
Honeycomb 3.0
Ice Cream Sandwich 2.4/4.0
lol
I think there will be a custom rom, but i don´t think we get it official.
Sorry for my bad English!
Julian
I don't think T-Mobile US Defy owners will ever see an official Gingerbread update, or anyone else for that matter.
Why would Motorola put one out when Defy+ is here? Defy team was moved to working on Defy+ long ago, that's why we still have a buggy official Froyo. They're just not working on Defy any longer.
They re-released the Defy calling it a Defy+ for the sake of a Gingerbread update. What makes you think they wont do the same for ICS. And ofcourse the Defy wont even get Gingerbread forget ICS.
Sent from my MB525 using Tapatalk
there is no question of getting official GB update in future. But I m sure there will be CM8 for defy
Anyway, CM8 sounds way better than a crappy ICS released by Motorola .
cannot w8 4 the ICS . even if our defy will not get an ICS update i'll buy a new phone
Is it possible or is anyone working on anything further than Kitkat? Since this phone has same workings as that of Nexus 5 just curious. Can this phone handle all that and more?
Can you provide a kernel for an Android L/M based ROM? No? Question answered.
All that and more? The hardware could handle it, although you won't get 100% of the benefits, e.g. ARMv8 instructions...
"... same workings as that of Nexus 5" ➜ TIL, Android phones work like LEGO.
People's got to stop asking these kind of questions. Amazon has just announced it'll release FireOS based on Lollipop, but has not confirmed the Fire Phone is among the devices that'll see the update. Even then, it has just been announced, not released. Devs need the upgraded kernel from FireOS 5 (read, not released yet, maybe ever), and to get it it'd be needed a rooted FireOS 5 Fire Phone.
Amazon hasn't released FireOS 5, so no root for FireOS 5, so no new kernel, so no Lollipop for Fire Phone. If Amazon halts development for the Fire Phone (unlikely but possible), we'll have to stick to KitKat.
They did release the sources for HD 6 &7 though I don't really know what the motivation was to do so? Also, those aren't phones.
And if anyone is knowledgeable enough to point me toward some more info on what the developer Hashcode did...he was able to utilize a second bootloader and now kfhd7 (a version of jellybean, I think) is running 5.1--pretty well actually.
These are inquiries on my part. Understanding exactly how he did it and what it actually required, other than enormous talent, is beyond me.

Great. Good to see updates coming.
Will they enable the track pad as it was advertised?
Will there be Skype as it was advertised?
I'm excited for the update.
Sometimes soon is not soon at all. ? they made it seem like it was released till the last sentence
Note 5 ?
Hope it's soon enough, the USB storage option is really a blast since I got a 1TB external exFAT harddrive attached, using that would be beast as ****.

Best way would be to have systemless root, and to flash each individual partition with fastboot.
so if you had systtemless root, you could just flash the stock boot.img, and do a standard OTA.
once the OTA is done and everything is working you get systemless root by flashing via fastboot recovery and the then the systemless supersu package via TWRP
(all this is as long as you haven't modified the system partition)
And just one high end game though
Well it's thursday here but i have not seen the game available or the update to marshmallow. Guess i'll keep checking for it.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is available on Google Play now: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nvidia.metalgearrisingrevengeance
Yes... and quit good i must say... Waiting for RE4... and of course.. Marshmallow Update.
is metal geer rising activated by a server? so you always have to be online, like doom ?
The game is available but the Marshmallow update isn't live yet. And installing a 5.5 Gb game on the internal memory is impossible. I have a 64Gb class 10 micro SD plugged in but I don't want to install any game on it cause I know that I will have to erase it to use it as internal storage in Marshmallow.
Can't you just move the games/apps back to internal SD, format and move back?
Still waiting for the fabled marshmallow update. Can't come soon enough for the sake of my internal memory!
Have to say though, some of the "new" features touted, aren't exactly new.
"Several new features offer increased personalization and ease of use. The home screen can now be customized by rearranging app tiles and menus. Searching has become easier with a new speak or click-to-type functionality".
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the last updates to the Android TV launcher & Google apps gave us both of those things. I've been rearranging my apps for a few weeks now...
January 17th . . . still waiting. It's now been over a whole quarter since Nvidia said they wouldn't keep us waiting "too long." Normally, I might be inclined to think the delay is trying to reconcile "M" with Android TV, that is, Google's biggest mistake ever just behind the Glass. But the Nexus Player already has Marshmallow. Every single element of Android performs noticibly worse on the stock Android TV than it does, for say, on Zulu99's rom. Who, might I add, worked on theirs for how long compared to Nvidias whole damn team? The Nvidia Shield Console is arguably the most advanced android device in existance. I would like to be at the very least somewhat thrilled by an official attempt at an OS by the makers. I'm not expecting to EVER be wowed again like I was for the original Shield before they messed up the streaming feature with it's innacurate roaming diagnostic features and stupid uneditable poor signal icon. Nvidia better have a daaaaaaaaaaamn good excuse.
any news on update.. so annoying

I can't agree with you more... How is it that the Android boxes coming out of China have enough common sense not to use [Android TV] (which is turrible), but instead just slap their own front ends on top of the real Android OS, so that the user can then decide if they like it, or want something better (aka Nova Launcher)... NVIDIA seems to have built their system using an OS with 3 year olds in mind. On a side note, Google should have learned from the failure of [Google TV] and just stopped, instead of rebranding the same failed BS as [Android TV]...
Well last month my Fire Phone met it's demise. Anyhow, I ordered the new BLU R1 HD Prime from Amazon 59.99(Prime member pricing) for 16 GB storage 2 GB Ram, anyhow, this cheap phone runs rings around the Fire Phone, and community support for this baby on XDA is amazing. If your looking for a replacement phone on a budget, this thing is amazing at this price point! Well the Fire was a neat( sometimes frustrating) experience while it lasted!!
BLU is rebranded chinese phones, blu is gionee and micromax is gionee. Probably you will not receive OTA updates

There have already been two OTA updates last one was july 5th security updates. Amazon is marketing this phone, they are not just selling it, they are partially subsidizing it. And a first ever for BLU, they have already released the source code. We already have bootloader unlocked, TWRP recovery, and root. Currently development is underway for custom Roms.
And to further enlighten you, Gionee only partners with BLU on a few phones, the R1 HD is made by Tinno, lol :silly:

Really? I briefly played with this phone (bought it for my grandmother) and removed the Amazon ads, but I assumed with the MT6735 the Blu R1 HD would severely underperform against the Fire Phone's Snapdragon 800.

That would pdobably be true, but the fire phone was hindered by the fire os. I just fnd this phone more responsive. I would not expect it, but it really holds it's own!!

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the Fire phone, and would have loved to see a fire os 5 release, it just died at a time I was low on funds, so I took a chance on this budget phone, and was just amazed at it's budget performance, and how quickly community support took off.
Do you really is waiting an OS update in this phone?
I'm feeling that applications are getting out from this platform.

Hi
I have an old Acer Iconia A100 Tablet, running
Android 4.03
Kernel 2.6.39.4+
Can this tab be updated?
Has anyone tried, was there success?
Any thoughts on how it can, or is it even possible
No one has developed a ROM for the a100 since jellybean. Its close relative A500 hasn't had a Rom developed since Lollypop. You have to develop it yourself or find someone to do so. Lineage aka Cyanogenmod won't support the tegra 2. So if anyone developes one it has to be on a Tegra 2 friendly Rom like OmniRom.
Having said that, Rooting accomplishes a lot, in terms of customization, so unless someone develops a New ROM, you can root it.
ok, thx.
I'll check out omnirom, but it looks like it's time for a new tablet.
it's already rooted
I understand that android has dropped continuing support for tegra processors which is what has left the iconia out in the cold for updates beyond jb. However dev timduru has developed a nougat-based ROM for the Asus tf700t which is another tegra based tablet. Anyone watching this thread capable of seeing if it can be modified for the iconia? It's kisskat's nougatella.
