Hey guys I have a question i'll be getting Fire TV on Tuesdaym got it for 55$ sweet price!
I already have a Fire STICK.
When i plugged in fire stick connected to wifi it download OTA.
Then it was not-root-able
how do I get the OTA not to update and access the menu? can I do without internet and go to the Fire Menu?
then I would be able to towel root it
but then how do I stop OTA after rooting it?
Thanks guys!

You didn't miss the opportunity to root the fire TV stick, no software version is rootable on that.
For the firetv, start here:
http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-get-passed-a-forced-software-update-on-the-amazon-fire-tv/#more-2768
It may or may not still be rootable from what I understand but you have to be careful to have a chance.

Has anyone considered a rooting processing by spoofing the OTA download for the Fire TV and/or Fire TV Stick? There has been a ton of research on how to block the OTA by modifying your local router's DNS. I know with DDWRT you can easily point the Amazon FQDN URLs to a local machine and have that can pretend to be the Amazon servers. For example:
Services > DNSMasq:
address=/amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net/192.168.1.100
address=/softwareupdates.amazon.com/192.168.1.100
address=/firs-ta-g7g.amazon.com/192.168.1.100
I wonder if there is a way to place a rooted image or perhaps a way to drop 'su' on the device by have the OTA check go out to a fake OTA server.
Just throwing that out there in case someone who understands the Fire TV OTA process better hadn't thought of this. Probably not possible for some reason, but who knows.
Thanks
Not sure, I guess there will be some certificate verification process?

This has been discussed multiple times. The package has to be signed.
51.1.1.0 fire tv firmware on fire tv stick?
I wonder what would happen if we tricked the fire tv stick to download the last rootable fire tv firmware (51.1.1.0)? That should be a properly signed binary. How close are the firmwares? Probably a guarantee brick but who knows?

I doubt that would work,
You can boot into recovery no problem, but it wont let you flash a rootable version onto a non-rootable version, no downgrade IIRC.

They are no where near the same. Not to mention the fact that the assert at the top of the script will not let a fire tv (bueller) update run on a fire tv stick (montoya i think?).

ok lads ive bought the new amazon fire tv and was wanting to root it but ive been reading up and read the new firmware on the fire tv can not be rooted my version is , 51.1.50 515030720. could any one let me no if it is possible to even down grade fimware thanks
nope
How would you plan to downgrade without root?
A coworker gave me a rooted (towelroot) fire TV sw version 51.1.0.1_user_510055620. After I hooked it up to my WiFi and registered it with my account there's no apps on it and it won't allow me to download Netflix. What is my next step? How do I get this thing up and running?

Do you know if CWM is installed? Im thinking the netflix available on Amazon is incompatible with your old firmware.
Basically, i youre going to want to update to one of rbox's prerooted firmware versions. Its not hard but you do need to follow the guides carefully. Best bet is to go to aftvnews. He breaks it down really well.
I'm not sure. How do I check? I also need to update the xbmc to kodi (I've started to search!)
So far I've only been able to unlock the bootloader but I can't push the recovery.img for some reason. I hope there's an easier way by now. Lol

just follow this guide up to the point of your existing software and then update to the latest custom rom by rbox.
http://www.aftvnews.com/start/
I want to unblock the updates so I can get Alexa. I am currently using Kodi and I am on software version 51.1.63_user_blahblah. I am not sure how that version number translates to the versions listed in the general forum (ie. 5.0.X format)
Will it wipe out Kodi and will I have to reload? Or will it leave it intact or will it ruin using Kodi.
Why would I want not want to upgrade? EDIT: It is a fire TV, not a stick.
Questions for you-
1.Is your Fire Tv rooted?
2. Fire Tv gen 1?
3.You want to update with root?
4.Or without root?
5.I take it you want your Fire Tv on OS5 software?
What ever firmware your on at the time being Kodi is not blocked or un-usable, on the AFTV2 you can root upto the latest firmware, there is gonna be a OS5 rooted rom (software) available soon from the Developer called rbox, he's just finished the AFTV2 version & he said he will make the OS5 version for the AFTV gen 1 user's soon. You don't have to have a rooted device to run Kodi.
Hope this helps If so press that thanks button

This is terrible, but I did it a long time ago. I don't think I am rooted. I think I just pushed kodi on it and then I ran something or ran some shell commands to stop updating. I know I should know!! LOL
I have gone through 3 computers and 6 hard drives to find out if I downloaded a utility to root. But I can't find anything but the download of the kodi .apk. So I am pretty sure I am not rooted.
I am not rooted. Didn't an update take out rooted units a while back? I remember reading that and installing kodi without root.
But I did something to block the updates.
1.Is your Fire Tv rooted? NO
2. Fire Tv gen 1? YES
3.You want to update with root? If I can avoid root I would like to. I play with enough devices. LOL
4.Or without root? YES
5.I take it you want your Fire Tv on OS5 software? Where are you getting the OS version? Mine shows as in my original post.
Now I just have to figure out what the hell I did to block updates. Off to the search window.......
Start here mate -
http://www.aftvnews.com/start/
Check the compatible root serial or update number on your Gen1, if you blocked updates You "should" have root still? If you have root I'd wait then update when rbox brings out the rom for the OS5 software which will update you to the latest firmware. Or you could get a free app on your phone that needs root (es explorer or file manager & try to use r/w in the file manager Or turn on root settings) sidelong it to your fire tv, if it fails you don't have root.

Bought a fire tv last year from staples, just got around to opening it and blocked the update links via the router but it still attempts to d/l updates.
How can I go about rooting it?

Look in the fire TV development section and read the rbox root method and see if it applies to your needs

yes, I have the box, so essentially I will require a usb a to usb a cable
will any usb a to usb a cable work?
edit: somehow my box updated to 5.0.4, even though I have the router set to block amazon updates. Rooted it using kingroot 4.1, disabled updates via adb, now I just have to load twrp and a pre-root rom
this is the guide that I was using

that was the version that ended up working, thanks
ok, have the fire tv gen 2 box rooted, pre-rooted rom 5.2.1.0 loaded up and running, removed kingroot bloat, went back in to disable ota updates and I get the error "ui connection timed out" when trying to enable su command after shell adb, it will not allow me to have root access
has this ever been solved, other than reloading kingroot?
