do textured skins exist? - Moto X Accessories

Maybe I'm wrong, but seems like most skins out there are smooth. Does any company make some with some raised texture/tactile feedback to them? Preferrably one that does not look like carbon fibre. I was thinking of getting a replacement wood back, but i came to the realization it would probably be just as smooth. I need something a little more grip, but never saw a case that I liked (too much bulk)

not sure where you'd like the texture to be, but I use this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/CIMO-S-LINE...Cell_Phone_PDA_Cases&var=&hash=item3386a10333
it's got the kung-fu grip on the side, no drops for me thus far.

by texture I mean something to give it more grip, instead of smooth, slick surface. I'm not sure how to classify it other than texture

I said, "where" you'd want it to be.

back. I hate cases, so that limits me to 'skins' like vinyl etc. but most, if not all, seem to be flat/smooth etc.

Haven't seen any skins with a textured back. I agree on cases - too bulky for me. I like them like my women - thin with some curves.
But given that most folks hold their phones on the side, I'd be surprised to see a skin with a textured back.
Sorry I could not help.
Good luck.

Slickwraps has leather skins, I'm not sure that would be what you're looking for though.. The other options seem to be smooth too. Haven't actually felt them but I intended on buying one for my m8 thinking it may help counter its slipperiness.

Try dbrand skins...

The dbrand one I got is textured but smooth. Like it has a wood texture ( really faint lines that are actually like cuts in the skin) that make the wood look very realistic but they're not much to feel and the back is still pretty smooth and slipper. For grip I'd recommend the clear back screen protector from xtremeguard. Its like that plastic rubbery clear material, which is pretty invisible but looks glossy and adds a lot of grip to the back which keeps it from slipping or getting any scratches.

I know it's not a skin and you don't like cases, but Bear Motion makes a very thin shell which protects the back and sides nicely and is textured. I've had one for quite a while and love it. It isn't bulky like most cases. Only drawback is that it covers the dimple.

I've been looking at those and considering one, but wanted to see if i could find something similar but even less bulky (like the vinyl skins). I had a similar one for my nexus 4 that was unbranded, and i really liked it. i think the term used to describe it was 'quicksand' http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/accessories/quicksand-case-pic-t2434950.

I think the Bear Motion brand is marketed as Sand texture. Something interesting that I've noticed is that on mine which I bought in late 2013, there isn't a separator between the power and volume keys, but on my wife's which was purchased early 2014, there's a small piece of plastic between the buttons. It's a little easier to find which buttons are which on hers. Not sure if it was a design change, or whether it's color dependent (mine's black, hers is blue).

There seems to be 2 types of materials, 3 finishes.
On mine, the clearish part is a slightly-bendable hard plastic with the texture of what all of my matte hard plastic. Think the type of plastic that is one most power adapters (that aren't shiny) but add a slightly bendable aspect to it.
The black part on the back is shiny, slick, smooth, and more flexible. It's similar to silicon cases (what I can assume you mean by soft gel/rubber) but I think it's still different. It seems to be less "floppy" even though it is very bendable. The shiny black part seems to "stick" to certain surfaces (such as my desk and other hard/flat surfaces) but not to some that you would expect (it doesn't stick to my pockets at all and glides just fine across my clothing, car seat, and non-leather furniture - it might stick to leather, I don't know). The black part on the front appears to be the same material as the black part on the back, but with a matte finish. The result of the different finish is that it doesn't have the "stickiness" on much of any surface, yet still gives your hand a slight bit of grip beyond what the stock TBolt gives you.
Overall, the "feel in hand" is comfortable and it gives you extra grip but doesn't feel sticky or anything like that. Imagine going from a slick, hard-plastic phone to a phone with a rubberized body (like our TBolt has). Going from a naked TBolt to this case is kinda like taking that one step further. But in no way could I ever describe it as "feeling sticky" in my hand or pocket.

So it looks like/feels like it's not going to just fall apart or anything like that, if that's what you mean. I can't envision drops/dings or other daily use wearing it down.
The ONE concern that I have about it holding up is because it is made with two types of "plastic" (I don't know if it's plastic, silicon, rubber, or whatever, hence my quotes). I fear that if I take the case off and on a lot (for my car dock), that the joints of the two plastics might start to come apart. This is NOT based on any quality issues that I have seen so far, just a concern based on the fact that this wasn't produced in a single mold when it was melted down (this is coming from somebody with an engineering background).
I will be shocked, though, if I have a problem with this case in the next 6 months, and for $5, well, I'd say that's pretty damned good!

Read my post a couple posts up about the 2 different types of materials with 3 finishes. As best as I can tell, the inside is the same material as the outside. What this means is that 60% of it is the very flexible plastic while the clear part does cover ~40% of the back. I would expect the black part to offer more protection to a fall/bump than the clear part, and fortunately the black part covers most of the corners and edges. Still, I expect the clear part to offer more protection than a hard plastic case would.
Updated the OP with some photos. Perhaps they will help.
thanks for the detailed feedback!
This case will also fit into the Verizon holster/shell combo holster. You just can't use the VZW shell, but it'll slide into the holster. The fit is a little snug, but it works. I like to swap out this case with the VZW shell. This one provies more protection, but the VZW one is pretty cool too.
In case anybody was wondering, I got mine from this seller from China: http://goo.gl/62Fhx
It took something like 10 days to get to me, but I didn't mind since it cost less than a good burger.

These are very nice thin and light hard case that will give light protection for your phone while still being stylish. My two case came in the other day (Black/Gray). I have not receive my One yet but the cases feel real nice in the hand. So if you are looking for a thin and light case, give these a shot.

Hey smooth,
Thanks for the pics - are these textured on the inside? It seems they could cause scratching to the back and sides on the phone while being shifted around.

Yes they have the same finish as the outside. It's hard to explain but it feels really smooth so I doubt its going the scratch the phone.
It actually feels a bit smoother on the inside. It's barely discernible, but it's there. My fingertips are well tuned, thanks to my woodworking.
It's a fantastic case, but offers almost zero screen protection. If that works for you, $6 from Amazon (US) can't be beat.

Appreciate the responses, may have to pick one up.
Picked up a green one for 5.99 with Prime shipping. I like it a lot, the texture is real nice, and it is a real tight fit so I dont think it will be moving around in the case, I have taken it on and off a lot in order to show people my nice aluminum phone., and have yet to notice any scratches though you do have to be careful taking it out of the case, as I said it is a tight fit. But Overall I really like the case, it really does offer almost 0 protection. It looks nice and feels nice. My one issue with the volume buttons are a bit difficult to press with it on and it kinda feels like it is something I could make if I had a 3d printer, very thin. Someone who is looking for a real protective case can look elswhere, this is almost all about style.
I just got my phone and this is how it look like in the black case:
Sorry for the poor lighting!
Very nice! I just ordered the gray one from amazon because my poetic borderline case is taking forever to ship. Hopefully this case will give just the right amount of protection.

I ordered some myself the other day. Even though they haven't arrived yet, they look very similar to the ROCK Quicksand cases they made for the Galaxy S3, and HOX. I'm just not digging their logo on the back... I'll probably remove it somehow.
bought the blue one. coming in on monday
great thin case
I really like this case. The texture is superb and sublime. Just enough to barely feel. There are just a couple of things that could be improved to make this case perfect for me.
1) The lip at the corners is slighly recessed and the corners should wrap around the phone a bit more. Almost every time I drop a phone it lands on a corner and with this case it's possible the aluminum could take the impact.
2) Lose the SIM tray cutout.
3) I'd feel better about putting the phone face down if the lip was just a half millimeter higher.
4) Power button cutout isn't quite cutout enough. It should be like the usb cutout which is perfect.
5) Volume cutout is just a bit 'sharp'. I wish the edges were smoothed a bit.
That said, these are nitpicky items and more like suggestions I guess. I would endorse this product.
Galaxy S4 cases
New to the forum. Anyone has suggestions regarding cases for Galaxy S4? There are so many choices out there. Just got confused easily.
I used to have a Bear Motion wallet case for my note and loved it. They seem to have the same wallet case available for S4.
But, I really want to have something simpler this time around. Any suggestions for a snap on case?
Same quality and fitment as Incipio and Spigen @ only $5.99... You can't beat em!
I have the Bear Motion case in grey, and yes, it's definitely a nicely fitted, slim, grippy case. However, the rubbery texture DOES begin to wear off with time. The coating on the edges on the front corners of the case have begun to wear off, revealing grey plastic underneath. Fortunately, it does blend fairly well so it isn't much of an eyesore. Hopefully you'll be able to see what I mean from the attached picture.

Best looking case with lip?

Currently the search function is down, but basically I am looking for a case for my new One. I love the build quality and aesthetics of the phone, but sadly it gives me a heart attack leaving it naked, I feel like I handle it like a live bomb haha. I never drop my phone, so drop protection isn't important to me, but what IS important to me is scratch protection on this aluminum body, the glass and camera, so I am looking for the best aesthetically looking option to provide scratch protection and a lip on the front so the phone can be placed face down or on hard surfaces without a worry.
I don't want to add too much bulk to the phone, so the cases I am considering are the KLD Oscar 2: http://www.amazon.com/Oscar-Style-S...d=1383336670&sr=1-1&keywords=htc+one+case+kld
...and the Diztronic TPU case: http://www.amazon.com/Diztronic-Mat...8&qid=1383334154&sr=1-2&keywords=htc+one+case
I prefer TPU cases, but I hate the camera cut out for the Diztronic one, even though they make great products. I also don't want a white or clear case because I know they normally discolor after a while.
So please help with suggestions that are:
-Nice aesthetic look and feel
-Not very bulky
-dark color (only because I want to avoid the discoloration issues)
-soft or matte material
-provides face down and camera table protection/scratch protection
-Under $20
I have also have heard many reports of the Double Dip cases scratching phones, so even though I like some of the black alternative options, I don't really want to risk it.
I'm using a fosmon dura fro m7 case from amazon in blue, it is cheap, looks pretty good (have received some compliments) works well enough and doesn't show discoloration like the previous clear tpu case I had.
Try the Poetic case.
I have the black one and it keeps the phone slim. However, the top and bottom edges are relatively exposed.

i use the diztronic in black. the smooth rubber has a nice feel in my hands, slides easily in and out of jeans and doesn't add a lot of bulk. the camera cutout doesnt bother me, i prefer it to some easily scratched piece of plexi or w/e.
dropped my phone on brick stairs last week. it bounced around and landed face down, not a mark on the screen. for $10, i dont think i could be happier.

No it doesn't. It has edges on both sides that will lift the phone up a bit. See attached picture from Amazon.

I quite like the cruzerlite cases. They are very high quality and have very nice designs. imo, their TPU cases are the best TPU cases on the market (I like TPU cases)
http://www.cruzerlite.com/cases/htc/one
I know you said no clear tpu cases but I really am liking this one so far, the cimo grip. I figure that for $10 I can afford to buy another in a few months if it discolors. They do come in other colors but I really like to be able to see the back of the phone, at least on a phone this nice. I like the fact that all of the edges are protected. The only thing I do not like so far is that the volume is almost impossible to change via the side buttons. The case covers the volume and you're trying to push through the case. Not a huge deal breaker as I rarely change the volume but it's a little annoying. I may take a knife and cut out the plastic. Again, it's cheap enough to play around with. If I ruin it I can buy another....

Diztronic TPU here. Cheap and works well.

I ended up getting a Meifeng (Bear Motion) in grey off eBay. I picked it up over the Amazon bear motion models simply because I thought the logo was nicer looking on the case and it was $7.50 with free shipping vs around $12 without Amazon prime. I LOVE how it looks (rear cutouts are perfect) and the texture is great. I recommend it for fellow sure handed users.
Lip is almost non-existent and I think the volume button is tough to press and the SIM cutout unnecessary, but the look and texture is sooo primo, looks like it the phone was meant to look like that. I think I'm going to pick up another brand case also though. I value the clean, premium look and feel, so some of these suggestions with gaudy logos or designs (including my man the little android guy) aren't necessarily for me.
The poetic palettes seem nice, I didn't even know colors were available. Here are the rest I'm considering.
-Nillkin Shield
-Poetic Palette
-KLD Oscar 2
-Diztronic or Hyperion TPU

Request: Rubberized back plate replacement?

I know this is a bit of a stretch, but I was wondering if there is a replacement back plate out there with a rubberized material instead of the slick plastic. I know I've seen some mentions of a Qi recharging replacement plate, so I figured it might be possible that there are other options as well.
I realize I could just get a case, but I've always liked having a "bare" device.
Thanks!
Have you tried applying a film? There are plenty of companies that make them. I had the xtremeguard one on my old G2 and it gave a more rubbery grippy feel, without really adding much thickness.

Thanks for the suggestion. That might be a good option since what I'm looking for seems unlikely. I wish I knew what the material of this protector felt like. It almost just looks like more plastic, which wouldn't really help the slippery-ness of the device.

I thought that too, but it's noticeably more grippy than the stock plastic back. It's somewhat like the TPU on some cell phone cases. It's definitely not as grippy as rubber though.

I've never used a skin/wrap before and bring averse to bulky cases I thought I might give them a try.
If you've used them before I'd like to know more about your experience: ease of application, residue after removal, durability/longevity, feel and overall satisfaction.

I've used them. I like them but almost always wind up taking them off - don't really know why honestly. I didn't think anyone was shipping yet for the Pixel 2 but I could be wrong. My thoughts
Easy to apply, use a hair dryer and be patient
No residue after removal
No issues with longevity. They seem to stick around. Sometimes at the beginning you get a lot of dirt trapped along the edges but that goes away.
The biggest thing for me is grip and honestly none of the regular skins offer anything meaningful. Even the dragon one from Dbrand which was supposed to be super grippy didn't feel noticeably different to me than a regular skin. Dbrand has a narrow scoped, predictable, good product and great customer service. Meaning, they aren't offering crazy variety but just offering what they know works reliably. SlickWraps goes out of their way to make unique textures and materials such as natural wood and leather. Many people have had a ton of CS issues with them though. My favorite skin of all time is Alcantara from SlickWraps as it is soft touch and grippy but it does not go all the way around and also is rather thick.
I usually wind up with something like Peel as a case.

My first time trying a wrap. I'm not a fan of cases. But this just feels and looks like I have a sticker on my phone - especially on the curved backside corners.
It also collects fuzz like crazy. I'll be pulling mine off when my case gets here, out maybe just leave it on in my case.

My first time trying a wrap. I'm not a fan of cases. But this just feels and looks like I have a sticker on my phone - especially on the curved backside corners.

Unless you go the natural selection, they are literally stickers lol. That fuzz collection will stop once the residual adhesive on edges fades
Anyone else have experiences with skins on this phone
Anybody know if there is a camera lens protector available? I'm worried about scratching it, but I don't want the bulk of a case.

I'm looking as well, when I had a Nexus 5 couple years ago. I think slickwraps or possibly dbrand was selling lense film protectors for it, but I have yet to find one for the pixel2

I just wanted to add my feedback on the dbrand dragon skin.
The dragon skin has a really nice leathery feel and definitely adds grippiness to the phone.
However, the one down side of using a full back + side skin is that because the physical power and volume buttons don't protrude very much from the phone, you kind of lose the tactile feel of them.
Kind of torn as to keep or peel it off. It is kind of weird not to be able to feel the power and volume buttons
Anyone get anything like Alcantara yet?

Do you get the sense that a case would fit over the skin? I'm considering one, but wouldn't necessarily want to remove and ruin it if I opted for a case afterward.

I used the spigen case over the dbrand skin for a couple days and it fit just fine. However, I decided I preferred no case - the dragon skin feels really nice with great grip.
One thing I do recommend from dbrand is to get a glass skin (or use the bonus one that's included) in addition to your normal full skin. The doubling up (or even tripling) of skins on the glass section make it just high enough to clear the stupid camera bump, and hopefully help prevent it from scratching when putting your phone on it's back.
I prefer clear TPU skins. They add significant grip on your hands and don't slide on flat surfaces. Plus, they are clear so you don't hide the phone's design.

Yikes. I've never seen anything like this. I believe I've had both Dbrand and SlickWraps, and both have been great, no fuzzies, and go on clean and tight. I had a nice light and dark wood (stickers only) for my Note5. I also have a real leather one that I never used, and may try to "mod" it for my Pixel 2 XL that's in the mail (so excited!!). I hate to see that nice leather go to waste. But it probably won't match up well and will probably look super-wanky. We'll see.
And the Pixel 2 looks like it may have the Nexus 5 soft matte back, am I wrong? Skins may not stick quite right, as opposed to the glass-back of the Note5.
(edit: just realized we have a Pixel 2 XL forum as well. I thought they'd just use one, but apparently dev is diff for each? Interesting...)
Love my red panda
Here my Dbrand with color G logo.
