Backstory: I have just switched over to Sprint from ATT, due to a growing need to save money on my family plan. As such, I had to sell my Nexus 4 and get an Optimus G (HTC One was sold out ) Picked this phone for it's extreme similarity to the N4, which I liked quite a bit. Brought home my new device and immediately set about rooting and unlocking it. I have been around this particular block many times since my first rooting and ROMing experience with the HD2 back in '10. I am relatively adept at this and don't typically get put off by it being more or less difficult than the last time. For example, I had an HTC Rezound that required a length or wire to touch two contact points together during a script run to unlock the bootloader. That was fun! Point is, this ain't my first rodeo. I researched the threads pretty thoroughly, and although I wanted to use shadow's AIO root/unlock, it sounded from the posts that it was outdated due to recent updates that hadn't been implemented. Sooooo, I went with engine's root/unlock. I followed the instructions carefully, installed and utilized Freegee(after running the rooting script, which was successful), got to the 'YAY' screen, and went about the reboot to recovery process, and poof! - brick city. What sucks is that I see all over where people have had seemingly the same problem (no boot past the LG splash screen). The thing is, everyone else seems to be able to get a download mode or fastboot or both, thereby making some form of 'recovery' possible, even without an actual recovery program being in place. I cannot. I was unable to do anything with the device, and after many hours of trying, I took the damn thing to Sprint and got another(always root and ROM on the first day, that way you can blame the crappy product instead of your crappy ability to follow directions ). Now, I have never been too proud to admit when I screw up, but I was very careful about reading and following the instructions and took my time. This isn't to say it couldn't still be user error; it almost always is. But, the fact that my problem was so similar to so many others, but no one else had documented a problem like mine really bugged me. Anyway, I got a new one and have been researching LGNPST and teenybins way of rooting/unlocking. I have already installed all the drivers and software and am ready to go. But, I gotta be honest, I am leery. I don't care about taking another phone back to Sprint, but just don't want the hassle. I am nervous because it seems that these devices are very finicky and there are many posts in all of the root/unlock threads with people who can't seem to get theirs handled. This is compounded by the fact that my friggin device refuses to go into either download mode or fastboot mode. I have followed the instructions for this as well (vol down and pwr for download - all three and plug at the same time for fastboot) I can't accomplish either task with this device. WTF. I have no problem doing the noobie dance if I am somehow screwing this process up, but I can't see how. I have some experience at this; I have owned an HD2, a Sensation 4G, a Rezound, a G2X, a GSII Skyrocket, a Nexus 4, and this. All have been rooted and unlocked successfully, except one of the LGs, see below. I have had issues getting this done before, but never like this. I also have some experience compiling builds, so I am not a pro by any means, but I have a pretty good idea how to go about these things when I change devices. What I would like is some factual and specific tips, steps, and/or advice. I have read all of the threads about these, so simply mirroring the current steps listed is not much help right now. I also have some questions, regardless of whether or not some of the 'purists' will troll my possibly noobie style thoughts :
Why the hell can't I get into download or fastboot? If this is something that is actually happening and not just my user error, it would definitely be a reason for unlock failure and potential bricking, right?
Is it absolutely neccesary to unlock after root? I know that the two almost always go hand-in-hand, but nevertheless I think it is a legitimate question.
Is this just a problem with LG devices? I had a G2X for about a week, and went through 3 of them trying to get the damn thing rooted and unlocked. I literally could not do it, and after the third one even TMobile was tired of it. The gave me a Sensation that I had rooted and ROMed in about an hour. I had no issues with my N4, and to be honest I was nervous as hell getting that badboy set up. smooth sailing....
I know that most eveyone swears by the LGNPST method, but there have been reported failures through this method as well. Can I get anything more than just opinion about the best way to accomplish this with a minimum of bloodshed?
I would appreciate as much advice and discussion as possible, because I can't be the only one and we have to be able to figure this out once and for all.........
One other question: Why the hell am I having so much trouble extracting the .bin files on my laptop? I have 7zip, archive manager, and winzip. All three have the settings refecting .bin files being formatted with each file manager, and none will recognize the .bin files. I have an HP DV7 dual-core, running W7 Ultimate. SOLVED: Desktop at work showed these files properly as .bin. Don't know why my laptop won't........
UPDATE: I was able to get into download mode by pressing both vol buttons while plugged in. I was also able to gain root using fiddy619s Universal root and held it after reboot. For all the good it does... can't use font installer. hmph. Can alter root files though, so progress is being made
UPDATE: I am able to get OEM system recovery by holding dn and pwr until 'buttons' light up, then releasing pwr but not dn until recovery shows. Still can't get anything from holding up and pwr. Tried unplugged and plugged in; no love. From what I have read, you HAVE to be able to access fastboot to be able to complete this process, sooooo........

Welcome to the Optimus G. It sounds like you got a phone that needs the "Special Unlock". This is not a method available to the general public. You will need to go to IRC and ask Shelnutt2 for it. Good luck!
Stories like this make me not want to root/unlock.
I know the basics, but I dont know much beyond that. I would feel pretty stranded if some sort of soft-brick, etc occurred.
Rooting my OG EVO was simple as simple could get.

I'm just as nervous, but I'm not gonna let this damn thing get the best of me. Already made some progress. As I figure it out, I plan to offer another listing for how to accomplish this goal. I don't think we need YET ANOTHER thread about it though. Probably ask one of the others to add whatever makes mine work to their existing OP. I think part of the problem is too many different ways to do this that are only verified as working by a few; or many up until a recent time. Maybe the latest LG update is part of it as well.....
I know this feel all too well. On my third LGOG and I was able to properly rot/unlock. I'm more of a visual learner so learning using text only was a pain in my ass(weird right?) But I am way to skeptical to flash a new ROM and the ROM I want to use(Paranoid Android) was just recently ported so I'll stick with Stock rooted for now.

Actually not anymore, since I rewrote the freegee app, it's built into it. On the main screen press menu -> sbl unlock. Follow the directions, read everything, then after you enter the code, unlock like normal. This method is guarnteeed to always work, however there is some additional risks involved and only a small subset of optimusg owners need it, that is why it is not the default method.

That is wrong, it's vol up + vol down + have the usb plugged in + power and they will get you to download mode. Fastboot mode is only avaliable when unlocked and that is vol down + power .
Tried the Freegee again but the softbrick was the result. I didn't find the sbl unlock, it must be in the paid version. Waiting for a new bank card to come in the mail is the only reason I haven't coughed up the buck. Was able to get into download mode easily and restore using LGNPST. No fastboot or recovery access though......back to the drawing board. Makes me wonder if the last one was really broken or I was too dumb to figure it out.

I believe the SBL unlock method in the freegee app is there, you just have to hit the menu button (I think).
Ran LGNPST again and acheived unlock. Good to go.

Glad to hear it, and fyi as in the description on the play store, the free and paid versions are 100% the same minus the name change.
I was considering trading my Note 2 for two OG's but reading this scares me a lil. Is it really that bad to root this thing?

Nope not at all. Rooting and unlocking is pretty easy for 99% of the phones out there.

Rooting this device is easy. Unlocking was a bit more detailed but in the end, just as easy. Still not certain if my issues were genuine or user error, but I will assume it was me. Make sure you read the instructions over and over before you begin. I have been doing this for a long time so I may have gotten caught up in thinking I knew all there was to know and not paying close enough attention to the details. Thanks to fiddy619, engine95, and especially Shellnutt2 for making these tools and taking time to offer assistance. Use fiddys tool for rooting, then buy and install Freegee for unlocking. If you have issues with Freegee, use the two-button plug method of accessing download mode(press and hold both volume buttons while plugging in the USB), and then use the LGNPST tool with teenybins for unlocking and/or repairs. These are the steps that worked for me without hassle; your experience may vary......
HI everyone,
My girlfriend has a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy T-999 phone and she is using Straight Talk as her provider. She is using Android Version 4.1.2 ( which I wanted to root before I factory reset her phone- which I did before via the Dial Pad but at the last option after I wait the 30 seconds to a minute the last option isn't there; so I left it alone. and updated her phone to 4.3 ) But it isn't necessary to root her phone today unless it's very easy.
What I wanted to know is, is it safe to Factory Reset her Phone and than allow Kies to upgrade her firmware to 4.3 and still be able to use Straight Talk as long I put back in her APN settings that she is using right now?
Now as for me,
I own a
Verizon S4
AT&T S4 - Which was blacklisted because I bought it off Craigslist and a man called it in stolen and got me for $550.That's a story in itself
2x AT&T S3-One has a cracked screen but the digitizer is working fine, it's just the outer screen that is cracked, and I have a working S# which I use on a daily basis.
My issues, I will look up and spend some more time on XDA today and learn how to do everything correctly.
I wouldn't mind testing everything I learn either on the cracked S3 or my blacklisted S4 which are both on AT&T network.
I have rooted only phone back in the day,( a long time ago via dial pad which i think it might of been on 4.1.1. firmware) .- phone that would cause an issue on my part. Now, when I am not working I search and have read MANY MANY times on XDA and wanted to let everyone know that I appreciate everything that you all do on your own free time. But most importantly today, i need to work on her phone and get it updated and working correctly.
Thanks in advance for anyone who responds to this post.:good:
Are you trying to root or unlock? The first part about the dial pad and option not being there sounds like the unlock method, I don't know of any root method involving the dial pad

Yes, that should be fine, but if it is rooted or modified it may fail to initiate the flash. In this case go to the firmware thread linked in my sig and flash the firmware via Odin. (Let me know if you have any questions about that)
Off topic but I have to ask if you'd be willing to try something on that spare AT&T device. But if you are at all skeptical or uncomfortable doing this, it is perfectly fine to decline....
In case you dont know, AT&T once again seems to have decided to withhold the stock firmware for the new 4.4.2 update. This causes tons of problems for users here on xda! I have built the stock firmware for the I747 myself, but have no way to test it, so ive been sitting on it for nearly 2 weeks! If this is something you'd be willing to consider, please let me know. (I will tell you everything I know about the possible negatives before you do).
Like I said, if you're not comfortable doing that, its perfectly fine. Im just trying to find someone with a spare S3 willing to take the risk of testing it. (Risk is minimal imo, or I wouldn't even bother asking). But please do not be afraid to tell me no! (And you dont have to explain yourself if you do!)
Sorry for going OT, I just have to take the opportunity to ask when I can! I just dont want to ask someone to test on their primary device because there's always a chance things can go wrong.

Yes i am willing to help you out. I just need to run out to BJ's and get some food for my kids and the Cat food I should be back in about an hr or so, once I am back , i am willing to help you out with this. I will do a simple backup of the phone but you will have to walk me through the steps since I haven't rooted a phone nor done any flashing, if you don't mind doing something like a Google Plus hangout, i am more than willing to help you out with this project. Is that ok with you?
Yup that'll be fine. Thank you! Ill pm you in the meantime to let you know about any potential negatives before actually committing to flashing it.
Just so you know now though, worst case scenario is a hard brick. And we have not been able to get our debrick method to work on kk yet.
I am confident that will not be the result, but there is always that chance when flashing anything, tested or not. Just be aware that currently we cannot recover a hard brick updated with kk. You can pay for a jtag service, but if it did come to that I wouldnt be able to help on the cost more than just a few bucks.
Like I said, that is the worst that can happen, but if I thought there was a good chance of it, I wouldnt bother asking to begin with.
Thanks again and check your PM's when you get back.

Right now, the way I am looking at it, is I have another phone S3 running 4.2.1 and those S4's, People like you have committed their time over and over again, it's the least I can do. And if it does get hard bricked, when there is a time and it is fixed, you could just help me or by than I will know exactly what I am doing, and can do it myself. But I am willing to help you out and take the chance. I will PM you when I get back bud.
When I get back I will finish talking to you and than we can start.
I'll just put this simply. I've got a splitting headache and I've been staring at various web pages for hours trying to (unsuccessfully) unlock the bootloader on my g4 so I can install twrp and root the thing. I'm about ready to kill someone. don't know who, nobody is around.
anyway.. I need a guide on how to transform my LG G4 US99120c US Cellular mobile device running Android 6.0 Marshmallow from a battery-draining eyeball-paining bright white piece of techno-trash into a rooted device with custom recovery that I can use on a regular basis without experiencing severe migraines because I can't delete stuff off the SD card due to carriers being pricks about released phones.
yes, I've tried google. Yes, I've tried searching the forums. If I hadn't done that already I wouldn't be posting here. please don't waste my time with "try the search feature".. I'm here because this is my last viable option for getting the damn thing working right. Please don't just link me to some random instruction manual either. I have bad luck with links.
If anyone does write me with help, write it for an idiot. Normally I'm pretty good at picking things up quickly but I seem to have come down with something the past couple days so I'm also a bit under the weather.. right around the idiot quotient.
I don't want to downgrade, I don't want to install half a dozen things or flash my whatchamacallit (got arrested last time I did that). I want to root the device, and possibly install xposed so I can change everything thats sharp white to a dull black. I do not want to do anything else at all but make calls, text, watch vids, listen to music and play the occasional game.
Thank you very much for your time, and a colossal chunk of gratitude for anyone who wants to take up this task.
FTR: I'm a former samsung user, so if you need to make comparisons I suggest using those. I'll understand 'em.

ill lay it on wasy for you......... you cant unlock bootloader. you cant install twrp and you cant root MM. not unless bootloader unlocked. wich your phone cant be unlocked..
root only on locked bootloader on LP.
there isnt a way and there will never be one.. to bypass and be able to install twrp..
well that explains why fastboot refuses to acknowledge the existence of the phone. I guess.
never say never tho m8, geohot should be proof enough of that for you. looks like I can't downgrade either.
guess I'll have to stick with my s5.

Will be interesting to see whether blocking updates will have worked, and how far Samsung/carriers are willing to go, and whether or not that can be avoided. Although this is the day they forecast, it will obviously be ongoing. I am trying to hold on until the next Note or until I'm incentivized beyond what I can resist. After paying a lot, driving 200 miles and waiting in line (twice), configuring and reconfiguring the replacement, and buying cases and screen protectors, I'd like to hold on to the perfect phone until something better comes along.
No... My 2 carrier unlocked AT&T Note 7s are still up and running. No change so far; they're still receiving texts and phone calls, etc. FYI: I used the S Package Disabler/Solid Explorer Method.
Working fine do far.

My Verizon Note 7 is still running strong.
T-mobile, works fine with blocking & 100% battery stat. Hahaa, fingers crossed.
No problems to report. So, I will report no problems.
It still charges well
Used Debloater to block updates. My AT&T Note 7 still recharges.
Im sure everyone will be okay and i doubt US companies will let Samsung go ahead with the IMEI block.
You guys all are safe, enjoy your phones =)

Need help unbricking galaxy note 7
can anyone please help me unbrick my VZW Note 7. i was trying to root it before they sent the kill update and i totally screwed the pooch. it is completely dead now, like all the way. doesn't turn on or anything. i have been able to download the Qualcomm driver and can now see "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008" in my device manager, but cant get anything else to work. tried QFIL but that gives me a "Sahara Fail" error. please let me know. i really don't understand how this can be so hard, isn't it just a miniaturized computer. i mean, i should be able to load whatever i want on it, right? any ideas will help. please. i even removed the back and unplugged the battery to use the QFIL, as stated on a tutorial i read, but that did nothing. i cant even tell if its charging when i plug it in.
How is everyone able to keep their phones safe from the update? I've resorted to turning off my WiFi in order to prevent it from downloading, but I'm hoping you all have a better solution. Especially those who say they're able to charge their phones to 100%.

Im sure everyone will be okay and i doubt US companies will let Samsung go ahead with the IMEI block.

I see IMEI cleaners on Craigslist, so there is that if they decide to go that route.

Using mine in Spain. No problems. No issues. Have blocked all swing update packages.

thats not going to work. Its not just IMEI ban there are more things in play. With that said few people in Australia were able to switch their imei to S7 edge and the phone is working fine.
Here in Canada I have yet to see one phone being put back online. Keeping my fingers crossed, hope we get there.
But going back to your post again, we have lots of add on kijiji and creglist too, i know for a fact non of them can fix the Canadian W8 vesion.
I still keep hoping, not returning my N7
All good here on the east coast. Still 100% with zero issues. Looks like the blocking apps are doing their job ?

I don't have a blocking app, just a Verizon Note 7 that works perfect with 100% charge.
All F'ed up, an jacked up here in Upstate NY AT&T, had to revert back to my Note 5.

can anyone please help me unbrick my VZW Note 7. i was trying to root it before they sent the kill update and i totally screwed the pooch. it is completely dead now, like all the way. doesn't turn on or anything. i have been able to download the Qualcomm driver and can now see "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008" in my device manager, but cant get anything else to work. tried QFIL but that gives me a "Sahara Fail" error. please let me know. i really don't understand how this can be so hard, isn't it just a miniaturized computer. i mean, i should be able to load whatever i want on it, right? any ideas will help. please. i even removed the back and unplugged the battery to use the QFIL, as stated on a tutorial i read, but that did nothing. i cant even tell if its charging when i plug it in.

Can you boot to Download or Recovery Mode? If your phone is completely dead at the moment, make sure it's actively plugged in. And, if you can, do not use the Samsung branded charger. They talk to each other and you don't want them talking crap behind your back. Just cable to USB or cable to another brand of wall charger. Once plugged in, try to boot to Download or Recovery Mode.
It has to be able to boot to one of those. The liability would be huge if Samsung had no way to reverse that. What if someone had a user name + password texted to them, from a legitimate law office, for a Will Reading from a long lost rich relative that no one in your family knew existed, let alone, had money... I know that's super random, but I'm basically saying that "Unexpected Sh!t Happens". Murphy Rule, if you will. There will be something...
Get back with us and let us know.
Well, that's good news. It appears this time bomb was a bit of a dud. I've had an earlier version of EZ Disabler installed and have system updates disabled. So far, so good.
here is my update. I have a note 7 on sprint.
I had automatic download disabled, and one of the programs that bloc everything. is still automatically downloaded, it gave me a choice to delay install till overnight but 2 hours ago is rebooted and installed anyhow, now my battery is at 41% not charging anymore, and one the battery goes down to 0 game over. my new phone has not arrived. any options for me out there?
please help, I need to save all my data.

(Warning: Antique Phone Issues) - Moto Droid Turbo 2 Firmware update(Nougat 7.0)
I have perused the forums here and there seems to be some answers, but I am a noob, so I am trying to clarify some stuff for my own knowledge. I am NOT a developer and know an insignificant amount of info on phone rooting, bootloading, etc. This...

I followed the basic steps provided and my PC doesn't see the phone connected to it, even after I've done the steps and uploaded the Motorola drivers, LMSA, etc on the PC. I am just dumb(again) and really don't know wtf I'm doing with this software/phone so before I brick it, I wondered if anyone would be interested in updating the software in my phone for a nominal fee? Common sense tells me that those that do this regularly can probably do this in a matter of a few minutes. If you are local(Indpls, IN), I can bring it to you, but I really don't want to spend a lot of money dicking around with an old phone. I hate to throw away this good(but old) phone, but Is there any interest in something like this? I am really fighting my common sense here and probably should just be getting rid of it and moving on. Thoughts?

Windows 10?
might work easier if the Phone is in fastboot mode first.

Sorry, I forgot to udpate on the OS. It's old Windows 7(trying to keep it simple) and I tried to do the fastboot mode mode and it didn't seem to see it even after that. The phone doesnt acknowledge that it is in fast boot mode though when it turns on(does it normally say something?) after doing it. I am positive I'm an idiot and doing it wrong.
I am also wondering if there is possibly something wrong with the motherboard because the phone doesn't advise it is on a 'quick charger'(OEM Motorola cable and power supply) when I plug it in. It seems to charge just fine though. Weird...

I am sure that you are a guru at this type of thing(obviously) and could build your own phone with all the knowledge you've gained, but I've been fooling with this phone most of the day and am getting nowhere. I am to the point that I would either dump it or send it to you and let you do your magic. Would you want to piddle around with it? I am just too computer illiterate to make this work apparently.
Don't feel like you have to do this or give any more advice. I'm about tapped out now on jacking with this thing and just have to know my limits. I can fix any car(or truck) as I am a former ASE mechanic, but this damm phone has me beat...
