[Q] M8 Radio Question - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I checked the forums and while I did find a link to the radios available, I'm a bit cautious as I know the incorrect one could potentially brick my phone.
I have a fairly new international M8 unlocked(S-Off). I purchased Metro(which I know piggy backs off of Tmo) prepaid plan and all works great EXCEPT the data speeds are very sluggish..like 2-3mb in an area that should be giving me much more based on friends who have Tmo as well as their coverage maps. If it was CLOSE I wouldnt mind- but its not.
My question is - what do I need to do to ensure that I get the absolute right radio to flash? I have a custom rom but I know its got nothing to do w that- my understanding is its the phone and the service provider... but, I saw a few different tmobile radios (I'm assuming since I'm using Metro that should be acceptable?) I just dont know which to choose.
I am out of ideas, otherwise, for the data speeds, as I've tried both Metros and Tmobiles APN settings, and neither made a difference.
Thoughts?

For starters, you're in the wrong forum. This is the m7 forum c:

Wonderful. Any way to move it? I dont know how that happened. Sorry guys.

A moderator will move it in some time. Don't worry, it happens to the best of us.

Indeed, moved...

Thanks much. Any help would be appreciated. Also if there are any other suggestions besides updating the radio I'd be happy to try them but I don't see much else outside of APN settings which I've tried w no success.

Anyone?

Cricket Questions

Hi all..
I have found and read the instructions as it relates to flashign a phone to cricket... I am an old GSM guy here, not too familiar with CDMA things... But Cricket is runnign a special this weekend where it is only $25 a month for unlimited talk & txt.. I think this would be great for my son as a cheap cell phone.. Here are my questions:
Would Cricket need to know that I flashed a phone from another carrier?
Do I need ot buy one of their phones in the first place?
Anyone who has done this in the past, I would value your input.... I am just a little lost here on this.. thanks
In CDMA technologies, the user account gets compared to the ESN of the phone that you are trying to use. Lets say that you programmed your phone (MIN, MDN, flashed PRL, etc). The tower will see all the settings from your account and it will look at the ESN as well, if all this information matches to what they have on the records, you will have no problem in using this phone with Cricket.
Why am I saying this? Because, you will have to let them know about the ESN of your new device. They need to add it to their database and under your account as well for you to be able to use it. I know that MetroPCS charges you ~$50 to do this, I am not certain about Cricket though. You may want to call them up and ask if you can have your Vogue flashed over to their system. I have read countless threads of people having flashed their Vogues to Cricket, so I guess it is possible.
Good luck!
Thanks for the reply...
Here is the issue (or question).. I live in a new "triband only" cricket market (Chicago/Milwaukee area).. I have read that, to work, the phone needs to use the 1700AWS frequency... I know in the "old" cricket areas you don;t need this... Will the Vogue work here? Sorry for all the questions.. I just don;t want to buy the phone and then not be able to use it...
According to the specs, the Vogue is only dual band (800 and 1900 MHz). You can see them here. If that is the case, then you might not be able to use it. Just check with them to be on the safe side. You can also look for people on the Cricket network on other forums and see if someone is using this device in the Chicago area. Good luck!
not sure about your city/are specifically but in Austin TX i was able to take a HTC Vogue (Sprint Touch) and fully flash it over. Phone, SMS, MMS, Data, Tethering, and I even found a guide for GPS (have not tried yet).
All works fine. They only issue I really have is that the DATA seems kinda crap at times. It says its at full EVDO/3G but sometimes i have to perform a manual disconnect/reconnect to jumpstart data again.
When I flash to a "non cricket" rom though I lose Tethering ability. Trying to find a guide on the settings myself so I can go back to NSFans 6.5 ROM.
Sorry for the bad news. Unfortunately there are no HTC phones available at this time that you can flash and have work in the Chicago area. That area is a AWS 1700 MHZ market and there are no CDMA HTC devices that support that technology. I would recommend that you purchase a cricket branded phone. If you are looking for a Windows phone take a look at Metro's line up. They have a Samsung that is tri band and WM powered. Also crickets new phone that is PDA like will be out tomorrow at cricKet Corp stores.

[Q] Charleston WV, Straight talk

Hello all, I think this is my first post ever on this site.
Anyway this is a post for a friend of mine at work with a gnex straight from Google play unlocked and 16gb. he is on straight talk with the att sim as we don't have t-mobile in our area (unless we wanna roam like the Gnome ) and he gets about 1Mb down on a good speed test, which i said is good, but he wants to fly like the wind consistently and possibly at a faster speed.
we know att has that HSPA+ which is i think the fastest thing they have that's not LTE.
he is currently only able to connect to HSDPA
i told him it may not just be in our area cause i told him we were lucky that Verizon even made us an initial launch city for their 4g lol
but he believes there's a way
well we read up and found that hidden menu with those test settings where you can change the signal to like gsm only, wcdma preferred, etc.
and we played around with those and they all set us at HSDPA when their strength reached max (except gsm only which only got on the EDGE signal which was just horrid lol)
i found a thread on here with radios we could flash to it to see if that helps any but he doesn't wanna root till his phone till the warranty is dead, which is a year from like a month ago.
i guess in summation were wondering if there is anything he can do to optimize his phone one straight talk so he has the fastest connection possible with an att sim without rooting it. And if not, was i right about the radios or is there anything else we should look into
any and all help is appreciated thank you kindly
The best thing he can do is have a basic APN w/o the "Proxy" line input (many people on ST report the Proxy messing things up). Theres nothing you can do to fool around in the settings. If you're connected to HSPA+, that's the most speed you're gonna get.
You can try other radios if you want, which does not require that you root, only unlock the bootloader. The phone can be relocked later to save warranty if needed. There's no guarantee that the radio changes will offer better speeds, as there's no "perfect" radio. Different people have different results with them. Don't expect to flash another radio and quadruple your speeds or something.
Overall, I'm not really surprised about 1mbps. If you're in a populated area, AT&T can get really bogged down by a lot of users. It really depends on the market and what the network saturation looks like. It also depends on your signal strength.
Here in the suburbs of Seattle, I can do about 1.5mbps to 2.5mbps down on HSPA+, depending on the signal.

thank you kindly for your info, he just asked if we rooted it will it make it faster and i told him that it will make the phone faster and more responsive if he tweaks it right possibly but not the speed of the net connection

Rooting alone does absolutely nothing to increase speed of anything. Rooting gives you administrator access to the phone and lets you modify system files, and use applications that require root access.
Unlocking the bootloader lets you install custom ROMs, which can let you tweak things and potentially speed up your phone.
I would never advise rooting a phone for someone. Unless they're capable of understanding the pros and cons of rooting and then doing it themselves, their phone should not be rooted.

[Q] AT&T radio on T999?

I've had many Android devices over the years and flashed a few ROMs in my day. I haven't messed with any of that in quite a long while though.
I've recently switched from all Sprint and all HTC devices to T-Mobile's Galaxy S3. I searched and found the thread about the Team Sonic modem flasher. I tried to read as much as possible but don't think my question is answered there.
Basically.. I get no service at my house and cannot manually select the AT&T network. Everyone with AT&T (including my girlfriend who has the S3) gets service here. Can I flash an AT&T baseband on my T999? I currently have UVLJ4 and get nothing inside and 2G outside whereas all the AT&T people get 4G in my house.
Hope this hasn't been answered before.
Thanks
Sam
Pretty sure that's a no-no.
I think you could flash the modem, but you need to verify they use the exact same partition on both variants. If it flashed to the wrong partition you're likely to hard brick the phone.
An att modem is not going to get you on the att network. I seriously doubt it'd even let you even make a phone call on tmobiles network, though it could happen. I can't figure any real reason (other than pure dumb luck) that another carriers modem would be better than one coded specifically for the network you are on.
Your best bet is to try out all the available modems we already have before thinking about trying another carriers fw.
And search again, but look in the development stickies too! You may find other things you could try. For the moment the modem flasher is quite outdated. I may work on updating it this coming week for those who are still wanting it. We'll see!

Will this no-no brick my phone or will I just not be able to get any service once flashed and then flash back? I've been trying to scour XDA and the rest of the internet for answers. So far I found this info..
"The modems in the GS3 are SDR or software defined radios. Their frequency TX and RX spectrums can be modified through software. The nice thing about the MSM8960 SOC board is that the radios can be programmed to virtually any current GSM, HSPA or LTE frequency in use in the United States today"
If this is true, I should just be able to flash an AT&T baseband, correct? Then again, I read that the T999 doesn't have the LTE compatibility that every other S3 has. Is this software or hardware defined?
Its a hw limitation.
Call tmobile and let them know the situation. Since you're new to their network I doubt they'd do it but I've heard of them providing a cell repeater to put in your home. Worst they'll say is no!

We replied at the same times and I did not see this until I had already posted. Thank you. I guess I will try previous T-Mobile modems and see if one happens to be better for me. All I want is to roam but the phone won't let me choose the AT&T network even though it shows up in the network search. Customer service told me you are unable to roam as long as a T-Mobile network is available at your location.
I do not want to risk bricking so I will stay away from trying the AT&T modem as I am not familiar with this phone or any flashing that has come about in the past 2-3 years.

[Q] Flash CDMA Galaxy S III to another carrier?

Ok first and foremost don't flame me for my stupid questions!
I was wondering if it was possible to flash a cdma Galaxy S 3 to my local carrier Nex-Tech Wireless. I've dug around quite a bit regarding ESN's PRL's and programs such as CDMA workshop & QPST but I'm a bit confused as to if it's possible and what exactly I would need to get.
A couple things to preface my question.
1. I currently have a cdma Galaxy S (the actual name is the galaxy s showcase but it's basically Verizon's Samsung Fascinate). I'm familiar with Odin and how to flash/restore to stock as well as editing roms to get mms to work. (Currently calls, text, and data/3G work as long as I use the showcase modems). This could be the first issue with using a different carrier's phone ( I don't know much about the modems).
2. Nex-Tech wireless is a small regional carrier in Kansas (similar to nTelos, C Spire, Alltel, etc.)
3. I've called Nex-Tech and they told me that they won't let me just bring in a cdma phone in and activate it. I assume this means that they don't have the ESN/MEID for unsupported phones allowed on their networks or in their database of phones. I am not sure if this is the case but its a guess.
Before I go buying a cdma GS3 I was wondering if anyone had luck flashing Verizons GS3 or the USCC GS3 to alternate cdma carriers. Or if they could point me in the right direction.
I think there are a couple issues. The first would be just getting the phone activated on Nex-tech service and then the other would be to ensure that 3G would work. MMS isn't a dealbreaker because I think I can get that going, it's really the least of my worries.

We can't flame you for asking stupid questions. This is the GT-i9300 forum, so we don't know anything about CDMA S3's. Probably less than you.
We can probably flame you for posting in the wrong device forum though

Well that is a very good point. I don't suppose a moderator would like to move this to the Sprint Galaxy S3 thread please?

Unlocked Sprint Note 5 issues.

So my brother gave my his old Sprint Galaxy Note 5, which he had unlocked so that I could use it on AT&T. We had to set up the new APN to work with GSM instead of CDMA. The issue is that it cannot access 4G bands, just 3G. There are some other minor issues as well, such as location based services. I was looking into flashing AT&T firmware onto the phone, but cannot seem to find a way to do it online. I may not have scoured hard enough, or it may not be able to be done.
Would anyone be able to shed some light on this for me? I would prefer not to brick the phone by attempting something when I clearly do not have enough information about the subject. Could it just be an APN issue? Or will the phone just be stuck on a lower speed band? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
The modem will only be able to access the 3G network as AT&T uses different LTE bands then Sprint.
I just found that out a little earlier today. Forgot to delete this thread. Thank you for your reply though.

You might be able to force the network bands with an app. No promises.
Well crap, just got mine unlocked to do the same thing. Guess I'm better off selling it and getting the att version. Was hoping the N7 took off so people would dump their N5 but looks like people will be keeping it.

It does support the AT&T LTE bands, call AT&T and have them put in the IMEI into the system to allow LET access. Since it's a Sprint phone it's not in their system as a 4G/LTE device. I got mine working but seems it has a difficult time getting into LTM mode, I have the correct APN setup and 3G works fine.
