[Q] Moto 360 not waking on wrist turn - Moto 360

Hey guys I recently bought my moto 360 and love it! The only problem I'm currently experiencing is that the watch face no longer wakes when I turn my wrist to look at the watch. This is extremely annoying because I want to be able to have more functionality with just one hand. Other than that the watch works perfectly. I've even been getting 16 hrs+ battery life on average. I tried looking through the settings to see if there was an option to change the wake settings but there are none. I don't see any other forums or anyone else posting about this issue so if you've had this issue please let me know what you did to fix this. ThankS!!

That started happening to me after the most recent update. Battery life improved by a few hours but then the wrist turn stopped being reliable

Since battery life is a bit more reliable, have you tried going with Ambient Mode again? While it admittedly doesn't last as long on as off, it does result in much more 'reactive' wrist turns to tell the time more quickly and repeatedly.

mine's a bit odd. Wakes fine normally, but when I mute notifications, it doesn't wake the screen unless I really move my wrist in an obvious way.

I actually got it to work now. The problem was going on when I had the keislertech stainless steel band on it. I switch the band with the leather one and the watch started waking every time I turned my wrist. I'm guessing the steel band was interfering with the accelerometers considering they use electromagnets.

Im still having this problem. And im only using the leather band. Any fix? Yesterday was working fine when i was driving to work then i noticed at work when i twisted my wrist nothing happened.

Try more of a 'flick' with your wrist than a 'turn' with your wrist.

I too am having this issue. I just did a complete factory reset on the device, still no luck. I was worried my gryoscope may be busted, but it seems to be working at least by using a testing app I found, though I am not sure how reliable that is.
No matter how hard I flick my wrist, the screen won't come on. What's more, putting it in Ambient mode will show the black and white screen for 1 second, then the screen turns off, as if the device was face down.
Quite honestly, I think it may be a busted Gryoscope, which would suck, so I'm going to test a few more things and see.
---------- Post added at 11:55 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:13 AM ----------
Factory Reset with no apps installed didn't help. Called Motorola, they are shipping me a new device.
Can't think of it being anything other than a busted Gyro that always points down.
Question for the OP, at any time did you use the latest Nexus QI charger to charge your device? Doubt that has anything to do with it, but want to know just in case.

Well, the Gyro in my watch is working again, but I'm still going to follow through with the replacement, since I don't want to risk it happening again. Nothing was done to fix it, it just randomly started working Saturday night. The sensor test I mentioned earlier is showing full functionality now.

Candidly, you're probably smart to do so. Tech being what it is, often times you get a device with bugged hardware. Let us know how the replacement works out for you.

Same problem here... Seems to have a link with aftermarket QI charger. The first time I've put it on the charger pad the screen flipped upside down. Since then, no waking up from wrist movement and even on the original charger it's showing upside down.
I don't know what to do !!!
This is my second watch i had a crack on the first one taking it out of the box I don't want to wait another week to get a replacement !

Came back to normal without any reasons... oh well....

my moto 360 also doesn't wake anymore, but also not when i tap it
if i tap and hold, i feel the vibration that shows up to change the watch face and when i click the side button you see this menu before it goes back to the clock

Wow, this just started happening to me too! I was hoping to find the solution in this thread, so I hope this isn't a sign of universal hardware failure!

Started happening to me too just yesterday.

Bummer
Been a few days for me. . . not responsive on wrist turn or tap.

Got mine working again. If you haven't already tried, open android wear app on your phone, then toggle the setting "tilt to wake screen" a few times (make sure it ends up ON however). Also, on your watch, make sure theatre mode is off.

I was having the same problem. It was theater mode. Somehow it was turned on,I turned it off and now the wake function works again.

Mine stopped working too a few days ago. I toggled 'tilt to wake screen' in the wear app and it started working again.

[Q] Wife Claims Ghost Buttons During Calls

So whenever I talk to my wife she always ends up hitting buttons on the screen. (mute, speaker, etc) I told her that the screen should automatically turn off and that maybe something was wrong with her device. As soon as I got home I tested it and it worked just fine. I couldn't get it to happen, light sensor was very responsive.
Somehow she manages to hit buttons and I have no idea how. I covered up the light sensor and tried hitting every button/screen area and nothing happened.
Has anyone else experienced this before? Is there something I can settings/mods wise to help?

Another funny thing is she said her boss at work has the same problem (female) and her husband has no issue.... Ha! I don't think they have Evos though.
my wife was having the same problem and we narrowed it down to her hair causing interference with the screen sensing that her face was against it. dont know if that makes sense but seemed logical to us and now that she tries to be aware of it and move her hair out of the way the problem doesnt seem to exist. hope this helps.

Weird! Does the screen actually turn on then? I should watch the screen next time she makes a call on it.
yeah the screen was turning on while she was using it. i think whenever she would basically readjust the phone against her head it would happen if the hair would cause interference...again i'm not claiming this is some scientific answer but its what we found seemed to be causing issues for her

How would the earrings affect it?
I think it's actually the proximity sensor being highly in tune to how close it needs to be to the ear/face. It takes very little movement of the phone during a call to trigger the sensor and turn the screen back on. They probably don't even realize they're moving the phone as much as they are.

During a call, I pulled the phone away, moved it around, etc and watched for screen to come one. It did not come on easily. I don't get it.
I need to watch her during a call and test some things.
My sis has the same issues with the moment, and I tried it out and it was fine. She does seem to use it outside her hair and does have a lot of earrings. Though this is the Moment, it still runs android and has the sensors. I'll let her know and see if she'll enjoy her phone again lol.

Still not sure what the issue/solution even is.
She picked up my phone last night and accidentally hung up on the person during the call! I didn't get a chance to see what happened...
She's starting to hate these phones. I need a solution.
Not a joke...but are these ladies blonds? At start of thread I was thinking hair color or earrings too. But earrings shouldn't impact the sensor as it is up top of phone and earrings would be down toward the screen.
But...if their hair was very light color...and they had phone only loosely pressed to head, I could 'guess' that the hair had enough light reflecting through it to set off the sensor.
Another thing to check on the earring side....what part of phone contacts first...do earrings hit the screen before head covers up the sensor?
My wife had dark brown hair :x
My wife too. Dark brown hair. With and without earrings. Swapped out one device, same problem. She even made it happen on mine.
I have seen it get in a mode where the proximity sensor seems to get reversed. Near head, screen on, away from head screen off. A button gets pushed at some point and then when the screen is on you can't un-mute, un-speaker, or answer a returned call from the one she just hung up on.
I think we are going to have to get her a different phone
I have the same issue but it only seems to come up with AOSP ROM's (Cyanogen & UD)
If I call Sprint and hit the prompts followed by putting the phone to my ear it presses other numbers. I think there is a delay in the proximity sensor that's causing this. I don't have long hair and my face is clean shaved so it's not that.
If I go to show someone that when everything works perfect. It's like when you call tech support for Dell, Netgear, etc. It works when you're on the phone with them and when you get off it doesn't.
I've noticed this in the past. If you are talking on the phone and you cant it just a little bit away from your ear, towards your face, you can see the backlight come back on. Also, hair can carry a static charge. So if your ladies cant the phone and the screen turns on, their hair could trigger a button press.

case magnet delay?

Here's a weird issue. I got my case, and it always succeeds in turning off the screen when I close it, but when I open it, there will sometimes be up to a 10 or 15 second delay before it turns on. Anyone else with a magnetic case seen this on the new Nexus 7?
It seems unlikely this is any kind of problem with the magnet. The case I got is this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E5G39DK/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
(not because it is a really great case, but because it was available early and is better than nothing - the biggest problem is that it won't fold flat, though perhaps if the spine gets worked enough it will get better).
I got this exact case for my fiancee's N7.2, for the same reason as you (availability), and it works perfectly closing and opening the flap/lid. It wakes and shuts off the screen practically instantly.
EDIT:
Actually, I take that back, it's not the exact same case, but it is an i-Blason case: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E4WSGOM/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Just happened to get this exact case and tried duplicating your issue and it is working flawlessly so far. Don't know what's up with your case or tablet
Well, it doesn't happen very much, but I've seen it a couple of times. It is definitely odd, but not a really big problem.
Do you open the case flat, or bend it back under?

This case doesn't really want to bend back all the way, but I do remember the first time I saw it happen I folded it back as far as it would go (about 20 degree angle) and put it on my desk, then about 10 seconds later the screen suddenly came on. I just wanted to clean the screen, so I was actually happy it didn't come on that time when I opened it, but then as I was reaching for it with the alcohol wipe, it turned on (maybe it is like a dog and didn't want a B A T H .

Do keep in mind that the magnet will work from both sides of the Nexus. Folding the case back will act like the case is closed, only weaker.
Might come on, might not. Might turn off, might not.
A new bit of info (which makes absolutely no sense).
The delay appears to be correlated with having no wifi connection (I can't imagine why). If I have wifi, the screen always seems to come on right away. If I don't have wifi, then I (sometimes) get the strange delay. Even if I turn wifi off completely (which you would think would take it out of the equation), I still see the delay.

When you wake the tablet, any apps you have running in the background that need to update information online will attempt to access Wi-Fi. This is mostly true for widgets that present information such as weather, blogs, news, etc., or update device status for things such as time, mail alerts, device statistics, et al. Some of these apps/widgets can be tenacious in their efforts to connect and might try pulsing several times to get a signal.
The apps/widgets that seem to be the most aggressive with ensuring that Wi-Fi is always available are the ones that infuse ads in some fashion. Some of these will refuse to run altogether. I have the Amazon App store on my devices but try to shy away from relying on it too much because most apps from Amazon will not run unless they can be verified online each time they are opened; even if the native app, itself, wouldn't require this.
One thing you may want to try is removing your widgets and try waking the tablet with Wi-Fi is turned off and see if the situation changes. If that doesn't work, then check if any apps are always running in the tray and if those could be the culprit. Another possible issue could be if you're running a shell or launcher as some of these try to refresh each time the device is awakened. Some of these shells/launchers aren't optimally coded and need to do a lot of recompiling and re-sizing on the fly.
Hope you find the culprit and can go back to enjoying your device without the hiccup.
I have same issue. I reset my Nexus 7 2 to factory setting. Problem resolved.
i have the exact same issue, i am using another case which comes with a magnet for auto screen on/off. sometimes it takes 5 - 10 seconds for my screen to turn on. it's quite annoying actually. does the old N7 have this issue??

Have you tried backing up and doing a factory image restore? Also don't associate your google account initially so no software downloads.
I have a similar casee (Roocase Origami) with magnets, and I have the same issue. It works again if I manually turn the N7 on and off. But after a few tries it happens again. I think it's a Nexus 7 issue, not a case issue.

I have a Poetic Slimline case with the same issue - unreliable magnetic on/off. I have Poetic Slimbook and Caseology Folio cases that work perfectly.
So is it the Nexus FHD or the case?
It seems like the Nexus since we all have the issue with the same different cases. Especially since the Nexus clearly knows the magnet is being removed; it just takes a while to turn on the screen. If you manually turn the screen on and off, then open and close the cover, the case works fine. But if you leave it alone for a minute, the issue comes back.
Nope, I do not wanna go through all the trouble just to solve this issue and without any guarantee on solving it too. I still can live with it but sometimes it's kinda annoying

I have noticed that if I am switching between multiple public wifi access points sometimes it will become slower to respond or not respond to magnet at all.
This never happened at home where there is only onebap.
Someone mentioned on another thread wifi status affected their magnet on also.
Not saying this is definite, but maybe worth investigating.
I have issues when WiFi is turned on but not connected to a network. When it is on and connected or off it seems to work fine, however. Strange problem.

Any way to adjust sensitivity of turning screen on?

Seems like it's kind of difficult to get the screen to turn on. I turn my wrist up to look at the watch and it doesn't turn on. I have to kind of forcefully snap my wrist horizontally for the screen to come on, just a casual horizontal movement isn't enough. Anyone else? It's possible I have faulty hardware.

Mine goes on really easy. I have actually been looking for some sort of a lock for the screen because my 6 month old was doing all sorts of things to it just during the first 15 minutes of holding her.
I put in another post that I wish the button on the side of the Moto 360 was a lock / unlock that kept the phone in ambient mode and stopped screen touches because I have not used it otherwise for anything else and it seems like it might be a useful feature.
You have to make sure your watch is on snug. If it's loose it will not register as accurately
Mine pisses me off that it turns on so much. Want to disable accelerometer/gyroscope wake and make it on button press only... Horrible if you have a long commute. I drove 3 hours and lost 60% battery from all the wakes.
I'm jealous of you guys. I have to snap my hand around like I'm saluting someone and even then it only works half the time.

No response on bringing arm up

Thanks but doesn't seem to do the trick.
I'm with the OP on this one. Sometimes, the screen turns on and sometimes it doesn't. I've tried flicking my wrist and that doesn't work either. Then when I start trying to make the problem happen, the screen comes on every time I bring my arm up.
I just wonder what is the precise action the watch is looking for to make the determination that you are looking at the watch (e.g., to tell time).
If anyone knows, I'd like to know so I can do precisely that.
Dennis
ps. Sometimes I miss my real watch because it always had the time. But I'm coming to the conclusion that we should stop calling these things, and comparing them to, "watches". They are really smart phone remotes.
It would be real nice to have a better understanding of the "secret handshake" to get the screen to turn on. If there is an irritation with the 360, this is seemingly my only one.
I would venture a guess, that those who root will probably wind up with a cool little gyroscope/debug feature that could probably begin to answer this question...
The trick is height, you can't just flick your wrist or turn it, you just have to raise it upwards too, I agree kinda sucks
Tried everything. Looks like a dud accelerometer so I just returned it. Going to wait for the Canadian release.

Yeah, that sounds defective. Did you have the latest update, the one released a few days ago? With it, I can raise my arm just slightly and flick my wrist and it turns on. The update made it more intuitive. Plus, make sure you are running stock clock faces. Some of the third party app clock faces stutter a bit and don't come on/off so smoothly.
I believe the trick is to tilt the watch towards you... as in lifting the top of the watch so that its at a 45 degree angle. I don't think speed or height have anything to do with it.

[Q] Moto 360 Black Screen -Resolved-

So something quite unfortunate happened to me last night. I factory reset my watch since I installed a new rom on my Moto G, and ever since I did that, the screen is black. Nothing else. The power button isn't doing anything regardless of how long I hold it in or whatnot, and it's just not doing anything, it's a brick. It's not rooted or boot loader unlocked or anything either. When it place it on the charging dock though, the light at the bottom of the dock lights up so I know it's charging at least, but I just really don't know what happened to it. Do you guys think it's toast?
--Edit--
So I spoke to Motorola's live assistance, and if this issue arises for anyone else, hold the power button down for about 2-3 minutes and it should boot into the bootloader, from there you can either attempt a fastboot reboot command or a normal powerup.
I tried your solution. But nothing happened. I think i have the same problem. Mine won't show anything, but when i tried charging, the light on the dock light up. Do you have any other solution? Thanks

I'm experiencing the issue. And my situation is same as @Raging_Ken. Is there any alternative way to manual/force restart? Since we only have 1 physical button. :crying:

Hi @Raging_Ken ! We're at the same boat. Do you any friend that have same situation as ours?
@presario3839
You also got yours from the states? I only know one other people who use the moto 360 and he also got it from the US. I'll check with him tomorrow. Can you check how much will it cost to ask for a replacement in Malaysia? Going there on middle of May, if it's cheaper, i'd rather pay the replacement there. Hehehe

I know it took a few tries for it to do that but at the same rate if you've tried it a few times then that's quite odd, It's also quite a pain how there's just one button to do it with. Hopefully you get it fixed, I really don't have too much else advice sadly D:

I just found out that motorola doesn't have any service center in South East Asia, hence we'rwe're screw. Unless somebody in this forum has an answer that can help us, the best that we can do is put it as an ornament in the bed. Huff. @presario3839

:crying: we're doomed! any acquaintance you have in this forum? Anyone can help us? @fireball0093 maybe?
I think there can be three reasons for the black screen.
1. The watch has hung and needs the 2-3 minute bottom press as posted by the OP.
2. You use Watchface or Watchface Pro like myself. It has occasionally crashed on me. After several taps, I eventually have the menu come up and can get to settings/reset. I then have the default Moto face and can reselect Watchface. Hope this bug is fixed soon.
3. Hardware failure. LCD displays have a single backlight and if it fails so does the display.
I hope it's either #1 or 2 that you are running into.
this happens to me whene android wear crashes on the watch. i was able to notice the force close notification before it went to a black screen and did not respond until the battery died. once the battery was dead i placed it back on the charger and eventually it turned on. this has only happened maybe three times since i bought the watch at launch.

I've tried #1 but failed to force restart the watch. #2 seems not applicable to me since I'm using Facer.
[Solved]
Hi,
I faced the same issue suddenly (black screen) since yesterday, i came across your thread today trying to find a solution, and tried every solution posted here (e.g. holding 2~3 min on power bottom) several times, but no success!!
I put the watch at charging dock and the charging LED in the dock is ON.... but the watch is just showing black screen ... until i thought it might be from the USB cable... so i change it with its original USB cable which comes with it in the box (while unaware; i used a cheap USB cable from the market 2 days ago while organising chargers/cables in electricity outlet, without realising that i changed the USB cables), and once i used the original USB cable... it's started to work/charge immediately.

I hold the power button for 3 minutes, however nothing happened.
Soon after holding i put it back on the charger and it restarted itself and everything was perfect.
hope this works for you.
Yeah. I'm having the same issue. The only thing that allows me to turn the watch back on is to put it on the charger. Been dealing with this for a few months.
after I changed rom I can not associate my bike away bluethoot.
the Debug:
cached bluetooth device for device not found
E / bluetoothDevice (3177) getBluetoothClass () COD is 526 084
E / bluetooth Event Manager Settings (13790) Got bonding been changed fo Mac-addres wareble, but device not added into cache.
someone has this problem?
I have the same thing! Really frustrating.
If I put it on the charger there is nothing. If I put it in a "funny" way the light on the duck is on and I can even see the battery sign shown but it disappeared after a few seconds.
I used different chargers and cables and outlets in my house and other places - same thing.
I even tried a friend's charger (original moto 360 charger) but nothing.
I did try the "holding" (3 min is a bit much, no?) - nothing happens. I do have a blister on my hand from doing that 5 times
Any other ideas?
I bought this watch because I was curious and now i can't be without it. I will buy another one if there is no resolution.
I have the same issue. I put the watch aside for a few days (still haven't exhausted the battery), and then put it on its original charger, a few minutes later, the display come back! Don't know why, and don't know whether it will happen again...
