[Q&A] Overheat with 4.4.4 (.283)? - Sony Xperia ZL

Hi guys.
Im new to the Xperia ZL. Had it since four days, at most. I got one with a modified rom from Movistar (Chile; south america) and it came with 4.4.2 kitkat. The 3 big companies in my country that sold the phone, had all updated just to 4.4.2
So, at first, I flashed a Generic/Customized LATAM (latin-american) rom. I felt the battery was kinda the same, but problems arose.
I was using using Whatsapp, and then started to use Chrome, web-browsing and everything, and suddenly the phone starts heating up a lot. And I mean a real lot. The maximum CPU-Z marked was 49°C (120 F) (If Im not wrong, CPU-Z marks battery temp). I stopped using it and shutted it down. I was, in a very heated area though. And my ZL has one of those cases that is composed of a rubber case and a metal case (think of it as a rubber case, and a ""metal"" case covering that). Still, I dont know if that had anything to do (dont think so); I mean, the comments I read about Chrome were bad haha. "Power hungry, resource hungry", "can cause overheat".
Searching, googling, whatever, I decided to use AOSP Browser (not the root app on the Play Store, but the "Vanilla Browser"). Still, though, mistrusted, in the end I replaced the Generic LATAM rom with the Customized MY (Malaysian) rom.
Now Im using the "Vanilla Browser". But Im kind of paranoid with this. I even installed CPU Temperature.
So the question is: is any of the above that happened to me, like, "normal" on a ZL? Was the LATAM firmware maybe "wrong" or anything? Im thinking of downgrading to 4.4.2. But I dont want to abandon latest, Settings-lag-free 4.4.4 :/
Thanks in advance

[Q] overheating problems

Running on slimbean 4.3 stable with latest kt kernel. Phone gets crazy hot after a short period of watching netflix. Im talking 70c. Searching around the forums tells me that I shouldn't be running this hot. Im not overclocked. Even if I underclock and undervolt it still gets pretty hot. Ive tried to bear with this phone because I dont want to have to lose the spigen glas screen protector but after owning the s3 and s2 without ever having heat issues this is really bothering me. Can I just go into the tmobile store and they replace it with a new one?

That really depends on the store and the people there.
How long have you had the phone?
Also, you can always try a different kernel, ROM, etc.
See if it does it on a TouchWiz based ROM, if it does, then it's definitively a hardware issue. If it doesn't.. it could just be your phone doesn't like that certain ROM and / or kernel and / or ROM / kernel combination.
Remember, each cpu on the phone is made slightly differently. Some are stronger than others unfortunately.
I'd run a few tests before I go and ask for a new device, but that's just me. You can always just go.

Should I Keep It Or Sell It?

I know this is probably crazy sounding to some but I just got my Xperia ZL c6506 in the mail yesterday but haven't unboxed it because I read several threads the day before about it having battery issues and not coming back on....At first I thought it was a small issue but apparently there are several of these phones that have had this issue. I would appreciate some feedback now before I open the box....

Really, my review on 7 months usage. Battery good, for a 5 incher phone totally depends on your usage( working days i get 2 days) weekends i have to charge at least twice a day. some heating issues( which is found in most of the devices),
Some Official Issues
IR blaster Manual function doesnt really work ( I have this, officially they don even know whats the problem with it)
Constant Mic issues, and ear piece issue (during Call) (I have mic issue)
Screen flickering (Fixed in update) but not for all.
Camera Black Spots (Again not For All)
And Right now my phone is under repair for Mic and IR Issue.
These are only negatives, now decide yourselves

Thank you, your input is very helpful. I've read about those issues also. This phone seems to have more bugs than the original XZ.
I sure hate to get rid of it...its such a pretty phone and well engineered. All the bugs seem to be from manufacturing, that would be quality control on the companies I guess. Sony should have done better with this being the so called successor to the Z.
I want to sell mine and buy a Nexus 5, pretty good phone

Well i can say my xperia ZL C6502 dont have any of does issues mentioned. no flickering, IR blaster work perfect, no black pixels on camera, great battery, mic, speaker and earpiece are working perfect. and not heating issues also. i just really love it.
I can confirm what the poster above me said. Back when I had stock rom installed, I could use IR blaster on different devices and even let it learn new commands, no single problem.
And the heating issue some are facing, it's due to the poor coded rom... If you install CM10.2 it takes your phone way longer to heat up.

I wonder what the differences are in the two models that have such a swing on problems? I got the 6506 for the LTE band....Straight Talk has LTE now and its Prepay...I used it on my ONE X+ and it was great.

ZL C6503 here.
On .423 stock rom (rooted) everything worked fine, no flickering, no fc's and nice camera quality.
Battery drain wasn't that high neither.
A few days ago I updated to .67 stock rom (also rooted, no other mods installed), suddenly the battery drain was crazy high, even with stamina mode enabled.
I think the problem is not on hardware side, its the poor coded rom. Most problems are software related (at least for me). Some updates seem to behave more like downgrades... For now the most stable rom was .423.
If you don't mind unlocking your bootloader (make TA backup first!), PAC rom should be the best option. It's stable as rock, gives you Android 4.3 features and the battery seems to live longer than on any stock rom.
And for the heating issue: modern 4-core-1080p-devices always struggle with heat to some extent. Depends on screen brightness and the software and games you're running.
Overall the ZL is the best phone I've ever had. It's fast, it's 'small' and packs all the goodies you like
I like the 5 incher compact size of the Xperia ZL. i believe it is the smallest available today with the thin vessel it really looks very sleek. Well that's me, form and function, it completely covers both.
I bought a 6506 - primarily because it was available for a good price...
Performance seems pretty reasonable on a "quasi" stock rom... it does heat up for me when I'm charging it and doing something - like right now I'm making a backup... that seems to heat up pretty well.
Battery drain doesn't seem too bad...
LTE performance is pretty decent... download speeds aren't terribly high in my area (range from ~ 20mb/s to ~ 26mb/s... but uploads range from ~ 6mb/s to 14mb/s... that's a significant increase from what I was getting before.
I'm unsure if I'll keep this for very long or not... I've already created a TA backup... and I'm seriously considering testing cm10.2 or some other rom...
I've had my C6506 for over half a year now, it was in perfect condition out of the box and everything worked great. LTE was nice and fast depending on coverage.
Currently using Omni ROM 4.4, it's IMO the best ROM for the phone right now, the performance is absolutely great, it feels almost like a new phone again. Everything is snappy which was an issue I had with other 4.3 based roms, they just seemed to have little pockets of lag here and there that while they were easy to ignore at the time, once I switched to 4.4 it definitely became noticeably better.
Google implemented IR support so hopefully we'll see that put to use soon for AOSP roms.
Battery life has been pretty good, I'm able to average 10-16 hours during a regular work day depending on usage, if I'm at home using only the wifi I can easily get atleast 20 hours.
I've found the phone only heats up during a few scenarios: Charging the battery, browsing the web at max brightness for an extended period of time(30+ minutes), watching videos or playing a game, and even then, the phone never gets to unbearable heat.
I would highly recommend switching to Omni ROM 4.4, but whether or not the Sony exclusive stuff is worthwhile is up to you.
For me the Sony stuff isn't worthwhile because when I first got my phone backing up the TA partition wasn't widespread knowledge, so I'll never get the DRM locked stuff again.

I traded my galaxy S3 for the ZL. Loving it so far. Phone display is amazing and the design is sleek. Battery life is far better than S3 and I love the stock ROM very much. With S3 i've had so many lauchers and apps to make the phone look good. But with ZL I'm just using the stock ROM..everything just works the way i want..
I would definitely keep this phone..

I bought a Nexus 5 and sold it 3 days later - it was smooth, and I mean pretty darn smooth in the OS, but the ZL beat it in too many ways.
Better Camera, better external speaker, IR Blaster...
I was really excited for the Nexus 5 but i liked my ZL more...and I can't even unlock the bootloader on my ZL.

Only thing that concerns me is that I don't know if the AOSP camera app is as good as the stock camera app, it's still gonna take good photos but it's been a long time since I've had stock so I can't really compare. Could be just be me being paranoid lol.

[Q] Constant overheating

I just got this tablet yesterday, used off of eBay.
So far, it seems whenever I try playing a game the tablet overheats and even in general use I can feel that it's a bit too hot for comfort.
The previous owner tripped the KNOX flag already so I assume that means the warranty has been voided. So unless there's a way to reset that counter I think repairs will cost a fair bit.
What can I do? eBay is very flexible with refunds and the buyer has all the power when the item has an issue (even though the item listing stated no refunds) but I'd like to fix the tablet without having to get a refund if possible.
Any ideas on how I might fix this overheating problem?
The tablet is on 4.4.2 btw.
Mine is brand new and have 4.4 already. Not rooted, all stock.
Tablet gets hot on the back, to the right of the camera lens, even when not playing games.
I think its the device. Poor heat management.

So this is perfectly normal? Damn..Never had any other electronics that heated up like this before so it makes me concerned since I keep hearing about exploding Samsung products lol
I had the same problem, so I went ahead and installed the xKat custom Rom and the problem is basically fixed. Only heats up when I do multiwindow stuff with video or playing intense games.

I think it's just how Samsung phone/tablets are designed. I also have a Note 3 and it gets hot also on the backside, near where the camera is. The temperature can reach about 36 degrees celcius, but so far has not caused any issue. I don't know about battery life though.
You can root and install custom ROM, but I really try not too because rooting Wifi version of this tablet will trip KNOX and I got tired of installing numerous ROM to find the right one that has the most minimal number of problems.
Since your rooted just fine a good CPU app that controls the speed.
This heating issue is most likely due to the Index Services process and S-Finder app trying to index the sd card (I'm assuming you're using a microSD card, but the issue may happen on the device storage as well)
It's been widely reported that with the Kit Kat update apparently this process gets "stuck" trying to index pdf files and causes the processor to overheat.
Try (again, assuming you're rooted) greenifying or freezing with TB these and check your results, worked for me.

Actually if it was overheating then the phone would automatically shut down to prevent damage, but yes the phone does get hot rather quickly. But I've had glass and aluminum phones before and they always get hot fast since metal retains heat.
Mine ran a lot hotter than a normal glass and metal phone, and it was laggy/jerky. I flashed the stock firmware to it, and now it's smooth and cool.
Here's How:

yes it does get hot once in every 3-4 days & when I say it means really hot..

My phone heats up to 44 C
What is the Warning Level is it safe till 45 or 50 Celsius ?
It happens when
1) On use of Google Maps while driving
2) Charging
3) When i use Sandisk OTG, to the extent that it stop the Transfer & freezes
4) Even if i Record Videos sometimes
5) While wireless charging
This is really bad Never had such a Issue
I agree with some of the sentiments here that the device can seemingly get pretty warm - especially when I tweaking things or using apps that use a lot of CPU or using the camera for too long. But I do believe a lot of it is related to the aluminum/glass case - I believe Samsung is basically taking advantage of the case as a though it were a heatsink - releasing all the heat into your hand/pocket/air.
This is truly the first phone i've had that manages to stay under 100° F even when cpu frequency is locked to the maximum and I'm playing very gpu-intensive games, provided that i'm not charging the battery and the phone is not in an unusually warm environmnt like a hot car. I should mention that i'm rooted and lots of preloaded software has been removed. I would download some sort of process monitor and check it to see if there's a misbehaving app to blame if this is happening regularly.

Hey,
I saw that you posted a solution when someone had problems with his S6 edge overheating. I've an S6 and I think I might have the same problem.
I was wondering if you could spare some time to help me. I posted my problem here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/help/help-s6-cpu-getting-hot-t3180011
I used Antatu benchmark and CPU temperature to test my phone and it got to 84.0 C twice, once when it was testing my CPU to it's fullest and once when it was testing game performance.
So I was wondering if you could run the test as well and tell me what temperature you got so I can compare. Thanks
I haven't tried your method yet but I will tomorrow.

For the record, mine just hit 85C while running AnTuTu. As far as daily use, it made a world of difference on my phone when I flashed the stock firmware the first time. The phone was terribly hot in my pocket when I was not doing anything, and it was SUPER laggy when I was. Not something I expected from this phone. After the flash, it was a Beast and ran MUCH cooler. It would get warm still when doing intensive tasks, but that would be expected from an Octa-core phone in my opinion. It does not get uncomfortably hot anymore, like it used to though. I would imagine it went WAY above 85C when it got hot before, because it was actually hard to hold at times.
If you have not flashed it since new, I would highly recommend it. I know it's a pain, but it's a one time thing that you never have to do again, and the benefit MIGHT be large. No guarantees, as you may not have the same issue, but I've received a lot of reports from people who have done it and they say it breathed new life into their phones. For me personally, it was DEFINITELY not a placebo affect. It was night and day.
With all that said, I've got my S6 Edge up for sale right now as I've moved to Apple for a little while. I continually jump around, and T-Mobile offered the iPhone 6 for $15/mo and I can trade it in 3 times in the next 18 months for free and keep paying $15/mo for the newest phone. I'm looking forward to seeing the difference in the iPhone 6s. If it sucks, I'll be trading it in shortly for another Android phone.
PS: AnTuTu final score: 69314!!!! Wow!!!
One more thing. To eliminate ALL lag and slowdown, I replaced the Samsung Launcher with the Google Launcher. What a difference that alone makes! Seriously, try that one thing. It's huge. The Samsung Launcher has some issue somewhere that they still need to address.

It should. As long as Smart Switch can recognize your phone model and download the Correct Firmware, the Flash WILL help the Heating and Lagging problem. If your phone is not recognized, then Smart Switch will not do anything. It's worth a try.
For me it happens especially when im playing arround with that samsung theme store build in app. I don't know why that app needs so much power to have that effect on the phone but for sure its something samsung needs to look at.
For sure they need to re-design that app from the scratch. Its like the "my first homepage" of theme apps.

How are your device doing ?

Hello my friends, I've been a user of this tablet since 2014 and i came to the point that im done with it. So i made this thread because im curious how are you guys out there holding up with yer Notes 10.1 too. Here are my current issues :
Every time i flash something its a time to pray a lot, lots of force closes. Even if i flash a factory image in odin and then flash a rom the odds are of a lot of trouble coming, you wont believe how many times FireFox died today on the same page.
TWRP is a no go for me. I usually can successfully restore a backup on a 1/5 ratio and since a wrongly restored backup ends sealing the death of the current installed rom its easier to just wipe everything and start from the scratch again.
I was in such a shock after rooting my Motorola Droid Turbo, because it didn't blow up or something. The Samsung knoxx software is just troublesome. I didn't wanted to switch to CM13 because of dead camera and some other bugs. But hey that's what has been happening to me, how are yours tab holding up guys? Mine is p601 by the way, maybe the other models are doing better.:silly:
Hmm, probably you just have a defective device?
I have a second hand P600, the WiFi model, been using it for over a year without much hindrance, and I average over 8 hours of screen time over 4 to 5 days of usage. 9 to 10 hours if used for continuous web browsing. The only problem is the WiFi antenna/driver might be buggered somewhere, because like once every couple of months it would completely forget a previously used WiFi point, like literally cannot even see the SSID listed on the WiFi screen, and the only solution is to either change the frequency of the point from 2.4 Ghz to 5 Ghz, and if that didn't work, to completely flash a new ROM. Luckily that only happened once, and just before I flashed a new ROM for unrelated reasons.
Regarding the modding part, I've flashed lots of ROMs and kernels, and the only significant problem is from running xluco's kernel, absolutely nothing wrong with that one other than the frequent restart due to some S Pen problem. The device would randomly restart itself at any moment the S Pen is used, and the fix that was provided by him in his thread didn't do much to change this. I suspect each S Pen model is different though, I used the larger type that Samsung provided for the older Note 10 model, it runs smooth under completely stock Lollipop ROM, but crashes the device frequently if I use either Xluco's kernel, or the 4.4.2 Hyperdrive ROM.
TWRP works ok for me, and I have never suffered any app closing issue. Anything more you'd like to ask?
I'm running ZakooZ CM13, customized Valex Kernel flashed via TWRP. This baby flys! No problems with Spen either. Stable and Fast! Oh, the camera works as well!

Ye i have the same feeling, i was very confused since we don't see many roms wandering around the 2014 forum, its pretty different from my experience with the Galaxy SII for example. I think it all started back when i tried to change the partition to F2FS, had some troubles with SD card too (multiples mount/dismount) all the info i managed to find was to buy a Samsung SD card instead of using another brand. Most of the CM roms worked ok before flashing GAPPS. Anyway i formatted the SD again and tried to flash pcparaamigos rom and for my surprise it did work (I've always been struck on the "extracting system" on some roms), maybe it was an issue related to the SD card slot since im now using the internal partition to flash roms and do backups, gonna need to run more tests, or i got lucky i dunno, sometimes i get the feeling that my device is a living being or something.
I found also hard to find a new replacement for this tablet, one which has better specs overall, not many 10.1+ screen tablets around and gsmarena doesn't tell if they have Pen support or something, just specs. In the end it feels like this tablet have a lot of potential but $am$ung just forgot about its existence.

:fingers-crossed: Gonna take a look at dis!
Not well. I think the device is on it's last legs.
Battery life is beyond terrible, and I even replaced it with a new OEM battery. It was fine for about a week, but it is doing the 30% to 0% within 5 minutes trick again. I wonder if a sensor is out of calibration or is failing? Also, the thing lags beyond belief. Even after a fresh factory reset with no apps installed, it can barely render a webpage without bogging down.
I will end up replacing it; just not sure with what yet. Perhaps a Chromebook that flips between laptop and tablet or another plain 9.7" tablet.

I had the same issue on the Galaxy SII, a reboot was like 10% of battery per reboot I have my eyes on the Lenovo yoga book or the Yoga Tab 3 Plus, dunno about the projector version, the microcrap surface looks like an interesting device but windows 10 is such a let down. I don't wanna buy another Samsung device because knoxx and update issues.

Have you tried battery calibration software? There's this new tweak app released on the Play Store, it's called HEBF Optimizer, has a pretty romantic design and philosophy for that one. Anyways you need to be rooted first, and there's an option within there to calibrate the battery, but make sure you do it while being charged and the battery is at 100% first. Also, perhaps try flashing a new ROM, maybe an AOSP one? I've flashed lots of stuff on my tablet and I've yet to experience any noticeable, prolonged lagging.

There's a new Huawei tablet, it's called the Huawei Matebook 10, that one has an Android version which comes with a wacom digitizer too.

I haven't checked the device personally so I can't say more, since it looks like not many regions has it available for purchase. There's also the Thinkpad Tablet 2, but that one is aging already and uses only Windows.

That looks pretty neat, a little xpensiv too :crying: The Thinkpad looks okay too maybe if we cant put a win7 there it can shine. I live near Paraguay and we usually find all kinds of electronics in there! Its a buyers paradise, its my last resort if i can't find the model in my region.

:fingers-crossed: Gonna take a look at dis!

Not that I'm aware of.
Edit: heres a quote from another site
"S Note, Action Memo, Screen write(Air command) etc do not work(read about touchwiz if you want to know more on this).
Replacement Apps exist in the Google play store that use some of SPen's functionality -
"CM S Pen Add-on (Root)" with "Note Buddy(Spent helper)" give you a functuonality similar to the stock Samsung's "air command"(that popup that show when you detach your pen)."
I use both of these apps and they function great for what I need.

Thank yo for your help. I'm in a middle of a lot of reading and compiling texts, so this might be my door to the 6.0.1 world
Mine still works pretty fine ... except the touchscreen ... sometimes very randomly it doesn't react to touch any longer only the spen works in those situations.
A quick on off fixes it.
I'm going to replace the battery soon and while i have it open i am going to check the cable.
Mine's still doin ok. On a 1 - 10 scale I'd say mines operating at a 7. The only issue I've ever had is with the battery. After the original battery failed competely I replaced it with an aftermarket one. It was a great improvement over the original battery, but it also brought its own set of issues. Many of the aftermarket batteries for these don't handle heavy loads well, leading to a sudden shutdown. I've reduced my CPU output to remedy this so now it rarely shutsdown under heavier loads. Other than that, I still love mine. No twrp issues, no problems when I flash anything (which I do regularly). Currently running OrionOS Marshmallow, which is a great ROM. All in all, still a great tablet that I have subjected to heavy daily use since it was new and continue to use heavily every single day.
Mine is still fine. I think a lot of the problems come from not using a case with a rigid back. Pressure on the Note's back could lead to the loosening of the connection of the cables running across the battery(display, backlight, touchscreen, usb).
And the plugs of most aftermarket batteries seemingly don't fit properly. So you'd have to reuse the original battery's plug by soldering it to the wires of the new battery. Probably the pins of the plugs can be unpinned with a needle (that works with DIL plugs) and the pins of the new battery fit into the old plug.
Then there's the thing with the bubbles under the screen. This seems to be caused by strong pressure on the capacitive buttons or comes from the closed lid of certain cases, i don't have that problem myself(my Note is from Nov '13).
