[Q] S-OFF Non-rooted safe ? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys,
I just converted my htc one m8 to google play edition and have a question. I flashed the non rooted firmware. If I dont root but keep S-OFF and the bootloader unlocked will my device be safe ( for ex. online banking etc ) ? Or would it be better to go s-on and lock the bootloader ? I know that for waranty I need to go s on....

Your unlocked bootloader and S-off has nothing to do with the safety of your information. You are running unrooted official software, so your device is as secure as it can be.
If you are still concerned, you can enable data encryption.

Doubt about S-OFF

May I know if One X is able to be S-OFF, is it mean that even the bootloader status is locked and we still can root and flash custom rom? How it different with unlock bootloader using HTCDev? sry for noob question..
No you need to be unlocked to root and flash custom roms. As of now HTCDev is the only method to allow unlocking.
Simple method. We don't know when Revolutionary will release their tool.
S-ON + LOCKED = You can only use official HTC firmware and only for the specific branded version you have.
S-ON + UNLOCKED = You unlocked it via htcdev. You're able to change the system and recovery images to allow for custom firmware. You can't alter anything regarding the baseband aka cell radio. HTC know you unlock via htcdev as they make you enter your serial number and other details to generate a phone specific unlock token. This will affect your warranty as any software caused faults are your own problem. General hardware warranty is still the same.
S-ON + RELOCKED = You relocked it after unlocking via htcdev. Same as S-ON + LOCKED except it shows you relocked.
S-OFF = No restrictions at all by the bootloader. You can alter everything. HTC don't let you do this and you need somebody else to work out a flaw in the bootloader to do it. Technically this voids your warranty as well but if you relock and don't leave any evidence that you did so then HTC won't know.

No one knows about S-off.
It doesn't mean we can root and flash custom roms even on the locked bootloader. It was a different and unofficial way of unlocking the bootloader which can be locked again when we need.
We can do the same thing even in this HTC dev method, I mean locking the bootloader, but after that the status of the bootloader will be RELOCKED not locked. That means HTC people may know that our device is already unlocked before.
One more thing (which I heard and I am not sure), we can't flash ported roms on our device unless and until we have S-off.

Dual Booting on Wildfire S

Hey Guys, it's possible a dual boot on HTC Wildfire S? I would install Cyanogen Mod 7 + CyanoGen Mod 9 or other ROM.
Thanks
Ciao ragazzi, รจ possibile un dual boot su un HTC Wildfire S? Vorrei installare la Cyanogen Mod 7 + la Cyanogen Mod 9 o un'altra ROM.
Grazie
i seriously doubt it....wildfire s struggles for space as it is, without having 2 roms installed at the same time :O
Ok... but i have an HTC Wildfire and i have installed BootManager and i have 3 Roms...
If your phone is S-OFF(not BL Unlocked) then maybe
If it it is BL Unlocked, then no
If you have S-OFF'ed and BL Unlocked(Which is EXTREMELY STUPID),Then also the answer is no
I have a phone unlocked with HTC DEV...

BL Unlocked(aka BootLoader Unlocked) means unlocking from HTCdev..........so the answer is no

Ok... So no hope? =(

Why is it extremely stupid to have an S-OFF phone with an unlocked bootloader?

Because an Unlocked bootloader restricts access to radio and a few other partitions
While S-OFF gives you total access to it........So by unlocking your bootloader while you are S-OFF,you purposely restricted access to partitions
In my opinion it is quite stupid

I don't think so.
In my opinion (which mostly is wrong) I think S-OFF + BL Unlocked = All S-OFF Features + just display of
****UNLOCKED****
MARVEL PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
BLA
BLA
That's what I think. It could also depend on the order of being done.
For example, I S-OFF my device and THEN get BL unlocked. There's a chance im restricted to modify radio or whatever since BL unlocked was the latest.
Second. I BL UNLOCK then I S-OFF. This way I get full control, despite having BL UNLOCKED.
Just my opinion.
And finally, @OP - Since the Wildfire has got Dual Booting And All, we may just need a dev to make a script that does it for OUR phone.

You maybe right,i'm no expert after all
But the reason why you can't dual boot on a BL Unlocked phone is that certain permissions are required for dual booting which only S-OFF phones can provide....
I've had talks with the Bootmanager devs via Email and they have explained me this stuff

Well, in conclusion we need S-OFF.

Dual booting is possible.
You must have installed full busybox.
If you firmware version is 2.26.401.3 boot manager did not work(i don't know how it will be in other versions)
You must have bootloader s-off, not unlocked from HTCDev. If you have unlocked it relock it and downgrade hboot to 1.08.0000(or something like that)
In boot manager probably phone setup will not work. Backup you boot partition from TWRP recovery. Boot rom from app. If you cant boot you phone rom flash boot img from fastboot or from TWRP.

This thread is EXTREMELY old..............I seriously see no reason to revive it, plus dual booting would actually imply towards installing 2 different roms on the phone or external storage and switching them conviniently, instead of using the recovery for it

[Q] a few questions about s-off and few other things

have just downloaded and installed sunshine installer paid for my license and am now s-off
1. if i need to send my phone repair is it easy for me to s-on again if so how would i do it
2. now im s-off is it posible to change the software status im using a custom rom leedroid and in bootloader it says software status modified but obviously would need to change this before returning it. again if so how would i do this.
3. if i return it to s-on if this is possible once i have the device back can i return it to s-off without having the purchase sunshine again ? again how is this done if i can.
4. and finaly if i wanted too how would i turn my phone in to a developer version so i can get updates direct from htc. im using a custom rom as i said on a original uk vodafone branded handeset.
thank you if someone could help a newbie out just incase i have to return my phone so i know what im doing i would really appreciate all the help
thanks in advance
I have flashed leedroid ROM with unlocked bootloader and S-ON ... So for me no need for S-OFF

S-OFF for my M8 ??

Hello ,
I have an HTC M8 ( HTC__203 CID ) and i want to bring it back to fully stock. Lock my bootloader and install official ROM.
I follow this GUIDE but i have to be s-off in order to finish it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2735235
How can i turn my m8 to S-OFF from S-ON ?
I cant pay SUNSHINE 25$ ..
Is there any other way?
Or any way to lock my bootloader?
Without s-off you can put the flag from UNLOCKED to RELOCKED
only with s-off you can let it show LOCKED. sunshine is the only real (and cheapest) way to s-off the device. No other method available.
The nearest you can get to stock is to run the appropriate RUU with a relocked bootloader. Or restore the matching stock nandroid backup for your device and flash back the stock recovery, then relock the bootloader.
That's about it. Ow yeah and please post questions in the Q&A section next time. This is the GENERAL section.

The only real reason to return the phone to full stock with LOCKED bootloader is for warranty purpose. Is that what you are trying to do?
If so, then sunshine is the only way to s-off.

Yeah something like that. I want to sell it so the person who will take it to have full warranty access.
Thanx both of you. The problem is that in Greece ( where i live ) i dont have the access to my paypal in order to pay Sunshine because of Bank System.
We have Capital Controls so we cant buy anything from outside of our country.

So whats the proper RUU to flash. And how can i flash it in relocked bootloader ?
I tried this -> 0P6BIMG_M8_UL_L50_SENSE60_MR_HTC_Europe_4.16.401.10_Radio_1.25.214500021.06G_20.68.4196t.01_F_release_417809_signed
and this one -> One_M8_4.16.401.10_stock_system_dump.zip
but after i type " fastboot flash zip ruu.zip " in the end it shows me this error -> 12 signature verify fail
What does it mean ?

Simple question about being S-OFF

Hey everyone!
I have a question for y'all!

-You have more access to firmware partitions, you can flash different firmwares, downgrade firmwares, change modems, etc.
-You can flash different region software, by changing your mid and cid as you said.
- If you do ever unlock your bootloader, you can use Sunshine to set it back to Locked and not just relocked.
- having your bootloader locked with s-off allows you to use apps like android pay without needing to flash custom kernels (it's been reported unlocking your bootloader trips safetynet and breaks android pay).
That's what I use s-off for.
Thank you very much @Tarima!
Another question that came into my mind now!
Without unlocking the bootloader but S-OFF'ed, root is possible? (i don't use android pay)

Yes you can root with s-off/locked. In fact, it's recommended to do s-off/locked rather than s-off/unlocked. One you're s-off you can flash TWRP, root, etc.
