Hello every one
I have a HTC Desire, I have goggled about the new update to android 2.3 and I found a lot of people getting very angry about the delaying of this update
I am just wondering ....about the benefits of this update and the differences that it will bring to the phone?
And also for the rooted phone can I update using the normal way?
(i.e setting>about phone>System software update) I heard that this way will make me lose my root or may break my phone.
Or is it better to wait for the custom room? does it deference from the original update? and which is better?
Sorry for the many Question as I am new in this stuff

You can't update rooted phone OTA (System software update),
but I think custom ROMs will be still ahead (e.g. with Sense 2.1/3.0 stuff), even if HTC releases 2.3
some bugfixes for a start.
they say that GB is faster than FroYo too.
but they finally fixed the mail app for a start so it will set up with hotmail EAS which is nice.
And they fix bug in google calendar, contacts and picasa they found out on froyo and other versions of android except GB, that some informations are send through wi-fi un-encripted and that brings user in danger.

open wifi only or something wasnt it?

But the main downside is crappy battery. Well thats for my phone

Battery life is much improved with 2.3 for me anyway.
When the phone is idle it doesn't use as much power as Froyo did.
To be honest, if you're happy enough to root I would just go ahead and try a 2.3 rom. LeeDroid is super stable.
Not only that but midmost of the popular roms will get updates regularly and have great support.

But if I install the new custom ROMs 2.3. Does this mean that I am running Android 2.3 ?
i.e if some application required android vesrion 2.3, can I run this application on this custom ROMs or not ?

One can update a rooted phone with an ota (over the air) update, but one will loose root excess.
I hope I'd get mobile data working again. It freezes all the time when dropping from H to 3G. upload arrow just freezes on and radio doesn't respond for a while.
This appeared after previous smaller update during winter.
Hey,
I have HOX,
Android version 4.0.4
HTC Sense version 4.1
Software number 2.17.401.2
HTC SDK API Level 4.23
I would like to update my Android version to version to 4.1. I was looking here to find it without succeed.
Where could I find stock rom version 4.1? If there's no way to update to Stock Rom, which Rom do you recommend to update?
Thank you!

Sense 4.1 is the newest
And the Firmware newest is 4.0.4
Which you have?
Sense on Jelly Bean (Android version 4.1.1) isn't released yet.

If you don't care about sense features then go ahead and flash a Jelly Bean ROM.
Personally, I think that the Sense 4.1 update has already made it pretty smooth but still, JB is somewhat smoother by a marginal amount.
I previously used a Jelly Bean ROM but came back to sense because it seems to have better battery life.
Hi.
As much as I really like the xda forums, I am having real trouble searching for my answer. Maybe I am thinking illogically!
I am in U.K. on Vodafone.
My CID is VODAP001
Android version 4.0.4
HTC Sense version 4.1
I have installed Android Revolution HD 9.4.1
If relevant, my HTC SDK API level is 4.23
In a nutshell, I am hoping to install JB update - either the official Vodafone one, or possibly Revolution (if I can figure out if that is fully functional for my device).
I hoped that Vodafone would have released the OTA update before now. But I don't know if my install of Revo is stopping my device from automatically looking for updates.
I thought I would be able to go to settings/about/software and search for updates, but that option doesn't seem to be available (is Revolution switching this feature off?)
So:
Is it worth me trying to roll back to stock, and manually check for updates periodically?
(If so, please could someone point me to a recent no brainer post on how to do this?)
Or:
Does the latest JB release of Revolution work with my model/network?
(If so, do I need to roll back to stock and start from scratch, or can I "update" my current version.
Whilst I am not totally noob to all this, I do find it slightly daunting, and I can't always tell which threads are the most relevant or up to date, so please excuse me if my questions are obvious to you. I just find that after a while on XDA I have loads of tabs and it all gets a bit backwardy and forwardy!
Many thanks in advance.

Hi,
Your CID has not yet received the official HTC jellybean update. This means that you will NOT be able to get an update from vodafone and also you wont be able to flash Android revollution HD 17.0 (Jellybean).
You will have to wait for HTC to roll out the official JB update for your device.
And none of the custom ROMS (including ARHD 17.0) support OTA update feature. You can update your device OTA ONLY and ONLY if you are on stock ROM, stock recovery and stock kernel.

There are custom ROMs that support OTA, but ARHD is not one.
I was hoping to upgrade my firmware(3.32.531.2) to the newest version(4.16.401.10). My baseline nand back up is the original htc tmobile 4.4.4 rom after it was boot loader unlocked, rooted, and s-offed, but nothing else.
If I upgrade to the latest and greatest firmware will that rom still run, or can that only work with android 5.x?
Basically I wanted to upgrade the firmware, make sure that all works, then move to a 5.x rom. I've tested a few 5.x roms and they worked with the older firmware, but I was curious if people knew if it worked the other way?
Thanks!
Device:
Tmo 4.4.4 m8
current firmware 3.32.531.2
Mostly stock - unlocked bootloader, rooted, and s-offed. Still on original htc image

It does work the other way, better than old firmware and new ROM. With old FW and a newer ROM, you will possibly have data connection issues, particularly WiFi.

So to be clear: old firmware and new rom works(and I've tried it) but may have issues(I had lte issues but was fine with wifi) but also new firmware old rom shouldn't cause real issues(aka unbootable)? When I was doing this with my old htc sensation sometimes that wasn't the case(but this was back in the good old gingerbread days). New rom(ics) and old firmware was bad news.
If something goes wrong, I want to be able to roll back to my working nand back up of 4.4.4, but if the firmware doesn't allow it, I could have some serious issues.

Great That's what I wanted to know! I had to wait months to s-off..(sunshine 3.x+) after having free reign with my sensation. I'm just so excited!
Nice to know.
And what about Xposed? If i don't get wrong, it doesn't work on Lollipop because Lollipop is ART-based.
So it should not be any way related to firmware, meaning that I could have the latest firmware (able to support a Lollipop ROM), a Kitkat based ROM AND working Xposed.
Could it be?

I don't use Xposed, but I believe it will work fine with new firmware as long as you are still on a 4.4.4 base. Xposed modifies /system which is part of the ROM.

Oh yah. Going great. I've settled on LeeDroid as my daily driver, but want a gpe/aosp version that works better in the end. CM12, Blisspop, skydragon(and I've tried others) have all had an issue or two for me that pulled me back to leedroid's. I've not wanted to make the switch to full GPE conversion yet, but maybe one day...
I accidentally forgot to make a backup before flashing a new ROM and now I'm stuck with no ROM! Please help if you can. Here's my phone's info:
HTC One M9 (Telus Canadian phone) Unlocked with S-ON.
Rooted with SuperSU and TWRP v2.8.7.0.
Currently, I only have access to fastboot and TWRP. I tried flashing Revolution HD and Viper and both of them install just fine, but right after installation, my phone boots to the bootloader and will not boot to the system no mater what I do. I tried going back to full-stock but I think I need S-Off for that which I have no clue how to do with no ROM. Plus fastboot won't even show me what my CID/MID numbers are to download the right stuff for my phone if I wanna go back to stock.
I just need a ROM to work. I don't care which one. What are my options? Is there a way unbrick my phone?
Thanks in advance!

Marshmallow Firmware is what you would need to run latest rom. You could pay $25 and use sunshine to make yourself s-off and flash the latest marshmallow Firmware.

For the original look you get when you buy it,I'd go with leedroid rom. For AOSP I'd go with slimroms or candy.
FYI, you can install a Marshmallow rom with firmware 2.1x when AOSP only. I tried a Cyanogenmod and was working perfectly with actual nightlies.
But for Sense rom, you will have to install firmware 3.x
Thank you guys for your help! @BR7fan you're a real life saver! Just a quick update:
I managed to get S-Off and now I guess I have to wait until firmware 3.x is released for Canadian phones as I could not get it on the HTC website as of yet. @gortys I ran Cyanogenmod all day today and got annoyed with the WiFi drops. It happens so frequently and as I understand, there's no stable build for the M9 yet. So I'm taking @BR7fan's advice and going with LeeDroid for now. Thanks for pointing out that I can get Marshmallow ROM's with my old firmware.

It's true that wifi isn't as responsive as with a Sense rom. I am actually running Android Revolution HD (Lollipop 5.1) with Elementalx kernel and I'd say that Sense rom are quite always more optimized. Waiting for official OTA to firmware 3.x to flash their marshmallow version of the rom.
Patience for all!!

Looks like the old Lollipop based LeeDroid has been taken down. I have a backup of it on my phone though. I'm uploading it to Google Drive right now but it's a 2 GB file so it won't be ready till tomorrow. I hope you find something else in the meantime, but if you didn't, check your inbox tomorrow, I'll share the link with you so you can download it.
