I bought an unlocked version of the M7 (over a year ago) and I converted it into a Developer Edition. Now, the phone has been hard bricked and I need a new phone, and I think I will get the M8. I'd buy the Developer Edition if it were available in my region, but it's not.
My question is; does the M8 comes in different variants like Unlocked, US unlocked, International Unlocked, and Developer Edition? The main reason I converted the unlocked M7 to the Developer Edition was timely updates, and I'd like the same for my new M8. The one I'm buying online is Unlocked but they don't have further details. Now is it still possible to convert it into Developer Edition or US Unlocked or whatever gets the updates from HTC first? Could you point the guides to do so? Also how to find out about which unlocked model I'd have -CID or MID? I'd prefer to start going through them to convert the phone first thing after I receive it.
Thanks in advance!

You don't want US unlocked, but yes. You can convert any GSM M8 to GPE.
Actually the US variant is just as good as the rest.
My US at&t variant is fully converted to GPE and runs great ,even took the OTA with no problems. It's been mentioned in the convert to developer edition thread that they are identical

Anyways, the reason I said no to the US versions is CDMA.
The GSM versions just seem a little easier to work with, plus more support.
Have I mentioned I've been drinking? lol

I don't want to convert to GPE. I want to convert to US Unlocked to receive the latest "Sense" updates from HTC, not "Stock" updates from Google/HTC. So can I still convert the GSM unlocked phone I'm getting into a Developer Edition and receive those updates received to the Developer Edition like I did with the M7?

Could you please refer to convert to the Developer Edition thread? What do you mean they are identical? I understand all of them would have the same software, but the main reason to convert to the Dev Ed is to receive "Sense" updates first from HTC -such as the coming Lollipop update.

The Sense launcher and the Sense apps that's not available for the GPE -like the camera app for example.

He means the device model ID, radio's that it shares etc it's the same.
What's the problem though, you could have found a way to convert to the Dev Edition ages ago if you just did a bit of "Googling" or Searching on here.
Regardless of which version(International, branded, Unlocked, Dev Edition) as long as it's GSM you can convert it to the Developer edition.
1) Get S-OFF - Try firewater or Sunshine S-OFF
2) Change MID to that of Developer Edition
3) Change CID to Developer Edition - fastboot oem writecid BS_US002
4) Download and restore a nandroid backup for Developer edition
5) Flash a stock recovery for developer edition - from collection of backups thread linked in point 4
6) Do OTA updates
Convert AT&T HTC One M8 to Developer Edition? There is a guide written by Gary.
You can also change the MID/CID and do a RUU for the developer edition.

Only Sprint and Verizon are CDMA.
AT&T and T-Mobile are GSM. I believe the US unlocked (and Dev Ed) are both specifically intended for AT&T and T-Mobile, and its the GSM variant. So the same as any other GSM variant aside from software (which can be changed).
I have chosen the HTC One (M8) Developer Edition. Thanks everyone for the help!

For the most part, I'd say whatever variant you can get for a good price. All the M8's (known as "GSM M8") are the same hardware internally aside from the following exceptions:
1) Dual SIM M8
2) Verizon/Sprint variants. These include CDMA radio, so different hardware. No benefit for you on AT&T, and less selection of ROMs.
3) Taiwan variant. Hardware is the same, but its overclocked out of the box. Some software from the other M8 versions won't work on this variant (including radios).
Aside from the variants above, all the M8 versions are essentially the same hardware, with minor differences of exterior color availability, and carrier logos on the back of some. Once bootloader is unlocked (and preferably s-off) you can flash CM to any of the versions.
One thing to note, AFAIK any M8 that has hboot 3.19 cannot be s-off by sunshine (and that is the only s-off method). Band compatibility for the various carriers/regions is software based on the M8. However, if you need to flash the radio to change band compatibility on a non-AT&T M8 variant, you will need s-off to do so. So unless you have a way of knowing what hboot is on the version you are buying, I tend to say that you might want to choose either the AT&T version or Dev Edition, to guarantee band compatibility on AT&T's network. Both of which fully support AT&T bands out of the box.

Right so, Verizon M8 wouldn't work on AT&T? That sucks. I knew Sprint wouldn't but Verizon is nearly compatible with AT&T by now, so thats sad lol
The best price is the Sprint variant, but thats because sprint phones do not have high resell value at all. People hate to deal with them completely and that solely makes the value go down...
I have not looked at the other variants but I will check them out! Thank you! I repaired a One today, It was a lot of work, but nearly any HTC Phone never looks or feels the same after a screen repair, because of that uni body.

Verizon variant will work on AT&T GSM and HSPA network (in addition to being SIM-unlocked out of the box); however, it doesn't have all the LTE bands to work on AT&T in all regions. And while the "GSM" variants can have radio software flashed to change band compatibility, you can't do this on the "CDMA" variants (at least you can't flash a GSM radio on a CDMA variant to open up all the needed LTE bands).
Similar situation on Sprint version. Except I think the Sprint comes SIM locked out of the box (you will need to get it SIM unlocked). And also the LTE bands are different from the Verizon version, but still not all the bands needed to work on AT&T in all regions.
My point in highlighting the hardware difference (CDMA versus GSM variants) is not only are the radio basebands not interchangeable (as mentioned) but neither are the ROMs. For the CDMA versions, you should only flash ROMs that specify that version is supported. The GSM versions can flash any of the GSM ROMs, and there is a much wider selection.
Again, there isn't a benefit to either of the CDMA variants (for use on AT&T), and several critical downsides, so I generally don't recommend them to basically any user that isn't on the specific carrier (Verizon or Sprint).

Aside from the exceptions previously listed, all GSM M8's are the same hardware, and firmware should be interchangeable (with s-off). T-Mobile version should be able to flash WWE firmware. Although, if you want to be prudent, you can check and confirm to see if any T-Mobile owners have done so successfully.
Hi everybody,
i am currently in the process of buying an htc 10 BUT as i had the m7 and struggled a bit (read -alot-) in finding proper ruu (exe) i have a couple of questions :
1. the devices (red and gold colors) i saw on display are on software version 1.80.709.1 and from a search on google it appears as it is the Taiwanese version , how does it differ from the European version with software identity 401 ? i mean hardware differences(LTE bands and whatnot).
2.after achieving s-off (if possible on this variant?) can i convert the device to WWE and update to the latest firmware and use the 401 ruu?
BTW i live in Ukraine and the htc 10 was not officially released here so that sucks ! the devices cost approximately 600$ for the 32 GB variant and 70$ more for the 64 GB variant.

hey.
i've bought the same version through Amazon. the same 709 edition.
the latest version for it is 1.92.709.1.
You can do SOFF, root ,install other rom and ect..
for the LTE bands, check your region exactly.
personally, i just made root, TWRP, and manually flashing firmware. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE to flash 401 firmware of other, except 709!
for that youll need SOFF, CID... (25$ sunshine app).
but for me.. it;s just a waste.. i can wait couple of weeks for firmware update for TW, as it doesnt different from 401.
you can install other 401 roms though. - i personnaly installed Venon rom 3.0 (it has 1.95.401 and mine is 1.92.709) - no issues.
hope i've helpd

Thank you for the reply , if i understood correctly i CAN flash the 401 firmware ONLY if i am s-off right ? but you saying that the 709 firmware is not lagging behind very much (two weeks) does make me hesitate on doing that.
what about the stock system ? can i make a backup of it and use it with original boot, stock firmware , stock recovery and revert to stock COMPLETELY (since there is no ruu available) and receive OTA updates ? if yes then i will be getting the phone soon, and YES viper rom for htc phones is the best, i used it on the m7 and i haven't found any rom like it since its the best!
Yes, you understood correcttly, and there are already stock images of backup for that. Sometime (like this case) the tw comes before 401.
1.92 with August security patch came BEFORE 401. So it's just pure luck
appreciate all the info

The main goal is not receiving OTA updates as i will be using a custom ROM anyway, i just ask because in case i need to return to stock i will find the firmware and stock image system, although the 709 has a few backups of every firmware in a thread. and about color preference since i had the black m7 i was thinking of getting the silver 10 (the one with the black borders around the screen imo the white borders look ugly) the devices used in the picture are just for example since they are the only ones available in store.
Glacier Silver with black face can't be .709 but .617 only...

No one knows... Moto got sold to Lenovo.
Moto before was google owned. Then it was dev friendly and one could unlock the BL.
But now with Lenovo. We will know once someone gets his hands on the international/European version. I think in the US its only provided by Verizon. Which of course has no option to unlock the BL.

Well if you buy a phone of Verizon it will be probably Verizon "branded" and they will close down and lock the phone. Most Verizon phones have locked bootloaders.
Zero chance of Play Droid on Verizon being bootloader unlockable

Developer option to allow the bootloader to be unlocked is not the same thing as actually having the bootloader unlocked, which involves getting the IMEI / ESN from the phone, providing that to Moto on their website, getting a response code back from them, entering that into the phone, and THEN the bootloader will be unlocked. This is apparently a very common misconception because everyone criticizes me for saying the Moto Z phones cannot be bootloader unlocked because this option is clearly visible on the dev options, when it actually does nothing to unlock the bootloader. It is the first step required to do it but nothing is unlocked until Moto says so.

Not yet, we need a working TWRP so we can flash SuperSU, none of the Chinese rooting methods work.

htc_pmewl is the product version for North American HTC 10s
You can find your CID and MID in download mode. Also your current firmware version is listed as "OS".
All of those are identifiers for your model. CID combined with MID will tell you which model you have (US Unlocked, T-Mo, Verizon, Bell etc), but the firmware version is the easiest way to tell (at least for me).
The firmware number is broken into 4 parts. For mine it is 2.51.617.32
The first part (2) signifies the Android version. On the HTC 10, the 2 signifies Nougat (it increases by one for each version)
The second part (51) signifies the build version from HTC
The third part (617 <----the most important part) signifies the actual model of phone the firmware is meant for. 617 is for US Unlocked, 651 is Sprint, 531 is T-MoUS, 605 is Verizon, and 666 is Bell and 401 is WWE/Europe (there are more, but for htc_pmewl these are the ones that matter ~ 401 is added because you'll see that a lot here)
The fourth and last part (32) signifies the revision of the HTC build
Most of all that information isn't too important except for the third part. That is what you need to pay attention to when flashing firmware and RUUs
---------- Post added at 04:00 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:44 PM ----------
Oh, I forgot to add, you can probably flash pretty much any ROM here. Most are GSM with CDMA (Sprint and Verizon) support added

thanks for the reply, just seeing it. so based on my model firmware 2.51.617.32 i can flash any ROM or US ROM? also would I have been able to flash the firmware accidently and my phone is actually another model?
again the ultimate goal is to see what types of ROMs i can flash so I can see whcih will give me the best battery life. thanks again!

Perhaps it could be changed if the phone is S-Off, but that won't really matter anyway. And the US Unlocked gets the quickest updates. It'll be the first model to get Oreo (based on every update released so far). And yeah, you should be able to flash any ROM for the 10. Any ROM I know of anyway.

even non US ROMS safely?? or would that require s off? i assume it will if radio partition and vendor are touched?

Non US ROMs should be fine. Most of the popular ones are actually based on WWE/Europe, but they work fine with US Unlocked, AT&T or TmoUS. And most of them have support added for Sprint and Verizon.
The OP on the ROM threads will let you know what is compatible and not.
I just got a G7 from eBay. On the back it has sticker says LG-G710PM but when I check under the hardware info in setting it says "LG-G710ULM" and the S/N is blank. It has a weird software version too

Does anyone know what is this firmware? I'm guessing they installed some custom ROM onto the Sprint LG-G710PM to unlock it.
Yes, this is legit. Someone flashed the European firmware onto the device.
Is there a way to update the phone? or what KDZ can i use ? got one also and have the same security patch?
Hey I have the same one from ebay. Won’t work with sprint, doesn’t have bars. Could this European firmware have something to do with it?
I think its not the European version software these phones have, it must be US version ULM (Unlocked) FIRMWARE software, But the phone is a G710PM (Sprint) Hardware model. There must be an issue with sprint i think and that's why you have no BARS, If not contact the ebay SELLER.

Have you tried sprint with yours? Is it working?
Why would it have different firmware from the hardware and will this cause issues?

I followed Radha09's post https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g7-thinq/how-to/lg-g7-thinq-lgg710pm-to-g710ulm10g-t3861962 and magic! Sprint voice and text is now working.
Data actually isn't yet, but I imagine that I just need to fiddle a bit.
Anyone else have thoughts on this phone? I also just bought an LG G7 (USA Unlocked) from eBay seller yywireless and it has the exact info as the OP has. Price is great, but I'm concerned about the Security Patch Level showing "1 May 2018" and when I try to update the phone OTA it says it's already up to date. Wondering what are the risks if I keep the phone? S/N shows as blank also. Other that this it seems to work perfectly! Do we think the bootloader is still locked like other US phones or maybe it's unlocked and will allow a flash to an alternate ROM? I'm a newb, so looking for advice here on whether to keep the phone or not. Lots of these still listed on eBay as we speak... thanx.

Yes, it's now working on Sprint fully. Unfortunately I don't remember exactly what I did, but I think it was mainly APN settings, I was playing with the "secret menu" to select correct bands etc. but again if I remember correctly it was the APN settings that did it.

The older FI kdz has issues with data, search on the g7 threads for the bootloader unlock and you will find 11g (newer oreo), then in same post you will find out how to get sprint data working.
