PCSX Reloaded - Windows RT General

Since Windows RT has a number of limitations such as the lack of libraries OpenGL, vfw32 and others, it is impossible to compile a set of good plug-ins for the GPU, as well as to use joystick, except from the Xbox and PS3 / 4 (and for them to have to compile another plugin if necessary - write, try it), and generally, the emulation is extremely slow.

[Q] Custom overlay keys and joystick.for controlling games

There are many many games out there that are playable on the new Atom powered tablets. Mafia 1 for instance looks great, probably better than any sandbox game for tablets.
And there are many more, think of diablo 2 for example.
The problem is, we lack the controls without a keyboard and mouse.
What I have in mind is an overlay control set including mapable keys and directional joysticks, like the ones most Android games come with by default.
Does anybody know if such an app exists? If someone were to make one, I'm sure it would sell like hotcakes provided the vast array of legendary titles windows can boas with.
So far all I have found are Comfort on-screen keyboard and hot virtual keyboard. They're quite expensive but I managed to play Need for Speed 5 and carmageddon TDR
What we need is joystick emulation, to be able to aim, even though without auto aiming, gaming on a tablet can be quite tricky.
Someone make a gummy stickonscreen Bluetooth capable dpad and buttons for our win8 tablets
Thankyou
I've been working on something like this.
It's all in .net, so it runs fine on Windows 8 and Windows RT. I still need to get it loading configs up properly (for customization), but I've got all the hard/tricky parts done.
It doesn't seem to like Quake, but it works great with DosBox.
So where do those keys come from? Are they built in dosbox?

No, it's a program I made. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2142997

Why does ouya require a custom xbmc build?

I read that a stable xbmc build for ouya was released. I'm curious as to what is need for a custom build? Is it to use the joystick? I don't think that's the case as I read something regarding hardware accel playback. But if that's the case why does the generic build of xbmc just work with other tablets/phones?
It is probably because the regular version isn't 100% compatible with the OUYA

I am here to help and provide knowledge to help others with there problems/issues. If you do have a question don't be afraid to shoot me a PM and I will help you and put you in the right direction to the best of my ability and will get your problem and/or issue solved.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Actually XBMC isn't universal, because different manufacturers have different ideas on how to deal with drivers at the abstraction level. Search around a bit, the Ouya isn't the only device requiring a custom build.
duh really?? No kidding??
I assume obviously there is an incompatibility but at least the other post was a little more insightful regarding the abstraction layer.
But xbmc in the end will use two things: opengl, and hardware accelerated video playback. So why would that need a custom build? If the android OS is designed properly this should all be done through an abstraction layer and not have to be coded to be hardware specific.
I guess somewhat related, when I first got my nexus 7 and heard about tegra optimized games. They are boasting that but I didn't actually like to hear that. I read that some other tablets that may actually have a better video chipset, could perform worse with these tegra optimized games. Even though nvidia and ati try and make similar claims, if the game is d3d compliant it will run fine on either. That's how it should be with android, so I shouldn't need an ouya optimized build. But this is my layman's understanding so maybe there's something else I'm not seeing.
The Ouya's lucky tho, my Galaxy S2 still doesn't have a build with hardware acceleration that isn't a beta, so anything but basic XVID AVIs play like molasses. =.=' (Samsung's own video player works better...)
Android's compatibility throughout all devices isn't guaranteed at any level below the abstraction layer. Games don't really have this problem because everything graphic intensive must be done in OpenGLES, which is at least backwards compatible - and unlike Windows you don't have DirectX vying for compatibility with it.*
Video processing is a different beast altogether, because unfortunately OpenGLES isn't a compression/decompression/streaming library. Google by the way doesn't actually promise HD video decompression from the very beginning, just the standard cellphone codecs. Not even VP8, the codec they back. Non HD MP4 is the only decent codec that's guaranteed.
Apple doesn't have this compatibility problem because it is its own manufacturer and nobody else manufactures devices that runs iOS. Android and Windows, not so. <_<'
* And even then remember that some graphics cards support only up to a certain version of DirectX OR OpenGL. Anything greater and the game either won't run, or WILL but won't let you see anything. The only reason why you don't see this in the DX9-10-11 transition was that game engines implemented fallback mechanisms. I still remember the transition between DX8.1 and DX9. <_<'
[Q] Best way to get universal compatibility with max speed
Java-Does not work on android/ios
Easy to program for.
Works on android if compiled to dex bytecode.(Cant be done on the phone)
Msdos-Works on all platforms with dosbox
//Currently my preferred platform
Requires slight knowledge of x86 asm(for keyboard/mouse interrupt)
Has setpixel.
Snes-Works on all platforms with snes9x
Has graphics limitations.(Not severe just some & Minimal 3D)
Hard to program for.(No good compilers,almost have to use ASM)
Javascript-Works on all platforms
Easy to program.
Slow for large programs.
Hard to control on mobile devices.
Adobe flash-All pcs & android phones(outdated and VERY slow)
Easy to program.
Runs fast.(On pcs)
Ps1-Runs on 1.2gz=> + 1gb ram=> devices
Extremely hard to program for.
Has good 3D rendering.
Gba-Same as ps1 without 3D
There is dev-kit pro that is easy to use if you understand gba hardware.
Android-Works on Android and pcs but not on ios
Graphics are confusing to me. // I have not studied android very much
Any I did not list that have high compatibility and decent graphics(3D rendering is optional),sound.
(I am listing universal targets not programing languages.)
I know it sounds ridiculous but the goal is universal compatibility and emulators seems like the easiest and most functional way.
Emulators - which one
Been using the command line for just about everything.
I do quite a bit of work as I have 2 rooted boxes and one running the Google Play store (among other things).
What emulator seems to be best - time to move from the CL to a GUI.
Which is best?
Emulators for what? (Command line?) On what Box? You've been using a CLI for everything so far? Like what? You do quite a lot of work? Thats remarkable. Let me congratulate you on that.
If you want recommendations on emulators for old video game systems - ask again, I might provide you with a detailed answer - even though this thread so far seems like it wants to bait information by sounding like you are a techy person yourself (ey, buddy, buddy) although none of the statements above makes much sense.
If I am mistaken and you want recommendations for the best Terminal emulator out there, I don't know. But try "Terminal Emulator" first, because thats usually what everyone uses when it comes to terminal emulators..
---------- Post added at 09:09 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:35 AM ----------
Oh, what the - I have the time, so why not...
If other people read this thread, looking for video game emulator recommendations.
Retroarch for everything thats not CPU intensive to emulate. Because it is a one stop setup solution for many (most) systems. Also it has the only implementation of ScummVM thats actually usable with a controller. (If you use scummvm - swapping to the new GUI theme (you have to find it as a zip file on the web) is much easier on the eyes, just fyi)
I use version 1.3.0 - because newer versions produced slowdowns on PCSX Rearmed. Havent tested the most recent builds though.
If you are on a Fire TV Stick, use either Snes9xEX version 1.5.1. or 1.5.27 (I think I stuck to 1.5.1) for SNES games as using other emulators/builds might result in performance issues http://www.explusalpha.com/home/snes9x-ex/downloads
If you are on a Fire TV 2 (as supposed to a Fire TV Stick, havent tested the Fire TV 1):
For most PSX games use ePSXe, most recent version.
For PSP Games use PPSSPP, most recent version.
For DS Emulation use DraStic (hard to set up, because its a paid emu, and Play Store licensing doesn't work in this case - had to resort to illicit means to get it working)
For Dreamcast emulation, use reicast (most recent beta build ( http://builds.reicast.com/ ), but it also depends on the game).
For N64 emulation use Mupen64Plus FZ Edition - its by far the best one. Most recent build should be fine as well.
Dolphin is a non starter on the AFTV2.
As for PPSSPP and ePSXe, learn what the settings do - which setting enables hardware acceleration, which setting disables certain effects - it usually is the difference between a game being perfectly playable or dropping frames. Don't resort to Youtube tutorials. Read up on the settings instead.
You can use the n and b keys on your keyboard to navigate forwards and backwards in the single image view.
edit: Also - consider buying a Xiaomi Game Controller, because it is cheap and has a great digipad. To get the best results out of this controller, be rooted and change line 42 in the Vendor_2836_Product_0001.kl file in /system/usr/keylayout/ from
key 0x13f HOME ALT #Long Press
to
key 0x13f BUTTON_START #Long Press
Otherwise, you will end up in the Amazon launcher in a few emulators that don't prevent this from happening. (It prevents this isue: https://www.reddit.com/r/fireTV/comments/5d9ptb/amazon_fire_tv_box_xbox_360_dongle_issues/ - but understand, that there are different kl files you have to edit for different controllers)
If you have issues with the controller going to sleep and then refusing to reconnect within an emulator - use a rubber band to pin the right stick to a tilt. Most games you emulate won't use the right stick, and this prevents the controller from turning off.
Not sure, if it helps in every case, but also google for
Bluetooth Auto Connect lag
and read up on how to potentially minimize the input lag from a Bluetooth controller using the Bluetooth Auto Connect app. Understand that in more recent versions the layout of the app has changed.
Also - just FYI, all the games you see in the images above are perfectly playable - for the beat em ups this means no framedrops whatsoever, on the other games - if there are framedrops, I havent noticed them.
The only exception is Tekken 3 running with upscaling on ePSXe. If you use Retroarch and PCSX Rearmed to emulate it (even with scanlines ) it runs frame perfect. (on Retroarch 1.3.0 that is - I just checked it out with 1.3.6 on a much beefier Android device, and it still drops frames - although the textures look better. If you wan't better playability, stick to 1.3.0) Tekken 6 also runs without dropping frames, even with some upscaling, although you have to disable graphical effects, or you will get noticable drops. All other PSP games I tested play perfectly fine with effects enabled. All Dreamcast games I tested also run without dropping frames.
Great work on this, I'm currently using (or rather still testing) it on a Microsoft Surface 2 running Windows 10 ARM32 (desktop) build 15035, I'm glad it can be installed straight up but I'm noticing kinda unstable performance in the GBA emulator compared to the ARM32 build of Win32 retroarch or other emulators such as VBA10, my test game is Pokémon Light Platinum and I didn't play with the advanced options or such except enabling fill screen and autosave, it's not unplayable or anything but with the FPS counter on I did see it drop to 20 then go back to 40 and back to 60 in a matter of seconds (or even less than one second).
I wonder if adding a bios may somehow improve that?
I also tested the GG emulator and that one works really good and has some really nice options, I just wish core options saved so I'd not have to configure them every time I play.
Since I mentioned autosave I really gotta say that's a really great feature this has and although I've never seen it in an emulator before it's definitely one of those things I didn't know I wanted. Another suggestion would be to maybe give an option to also save every X minutes where X is an interval we set, that way if the emulator crashes or freezes (which it does if I accidentally rotate the screen but... I'll say that's related to the 15035 instability since other apps do also) we don't lose too much progress.
I really thank you for your testing,
almost all the suggestion are great and will be added in the next release very soon.
Meanwhile there is an issue with the performance..
for some reason the performance will be dropped during the game
but you can restore the performance using (pause then wait for few seconds and resume)
I'm trying to solve this issue, and add more performance enhancements for the others.
Also thanks for informing me about the rotate issue I didn't know it, will be solved very soon.
If any other suggestions I will be glad to hear it.
I saw the performance tip and I tried it, didn't help, the GBA emulator just randomly decides to drop FPS, it's the same behavior since the very start of the game and as I said the GG emulator doesn't do that.
The rotation issue is probably just 15035 being broken, as I said it happens with other apps as well but the autosave x minutes thing would be nice, thank you.
I tried more emulators and gotta say this is nice., N64 as expected isn't really playable but Saturn seems kinda ok-ish, games that don't require fast reactions could be playable, PS1 is playable, probably a bit slower than other PS1 emulators we have available (PCSX-R, retroarch) but just marginally, DS is pretty good, better than the desmume port we have.
I was wondering one thing: are you considering adding reicast at some point? I know reicast (standalone) works great even on an old Android 4.2 tablet with 512 MB RAM and a single core 1.5 GHz CPU so thought that should work pretty well here.
New update released 2.6.6.0, please check the main message for change log and download links.
Based on the package info for (x64) it's Desktop,
The mobile version (ARM) already modified to work with the minimum target.
but I didn't test the app on any system below W10
Tested only in windows 10 environment + mobile Lumia 950/XL
That's right, I should to mention in the description that you can change the extension to .msix
or next release I will keep the file in (.msix)
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/msix/msix-core/deploy-with-msix-core
installing msix fils is still an issue for win7 with sp1 you will need to make sure the following is installed on the machine first Release MSIX Core 1.1 release · microsoft/msix-packaging · GitHub
also the instructions for cert file will not work due to not being offered local machine on windows 7
you will get the following error even after installing cert file
0x8bad0042 - Either you need a new certificate installed for this app package, or you need a new app package with trusted certificates. Your system administrator or the app developer can help. A certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate which isn't trusted.
New Release RetriX Gold (2.6.9.0) (check main post) minor fix related to the images cache issue
I tested the latest version on my Surface 2 with Windows 10 ARM32 and performance in the GBA emulator seems to have improved, there's still a slight slow down (noticeable in both audio and video) compared to other GBA emulators we have available but it goes away if the retrix frameskip option is turned on.
Great work!
Many thanks for your feedback
Hmm... I noticed the GG emulator performance now has random drops also but it's no big deal, the retrix frameskip option fixes that.
Also playing for a bit longer 2 suggestions came to mind:
1. Could the touch controls be editable? On the tablet I feel I'd want them to be slightly bigger and more spaced out also (and a bit less close to the edge of the screen), that may just be me having thick fingers though. The controls were probably designed with a phone in mind and there I bet they're quite good but there's enough screen space on a tablet for bigger controls.
2. Would it perhaps be possible to add multiple AnyCore slots and we get to rename them so we know which is what?
