System variant error usually means the device MID is not matching with the OTA.

See your problem is here :
version-main: 1.54.709.12
modelid: 0P6B13000
1.54.709.12 should have 0P6B11000 not 0P6B13000
Not so sure which region has 0P6B13000 other than t-mob.
There is an easy fix for this, but first you need to decide on which region you want to stick to. You current one 1.54.709.12 is an Asian region device.
(Taiwan region device if I'm not wrong)
Since you're not sure the origin of the device, I suggest that you fully convert it to EU version ... whatever you decide, it still need some manual flashing but not OTA manual flashing (no worry on that)

I want to convert EU region

Nah .. you won't easily brick your device .. I give you the safest way to do it here :
1. You need to change MID to 0P6B10000. See this thread on How-To : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708581
In order to do that you need to root your current ROM, I believe you know how-to.
2. You need to install TWRP and then download this nandroid backup : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54564526&postcount=1471
and you need the stock recovery too : http://sourceforge.net/projects/htconem8/files/Recovery/1.54.401.10_recovery.img/download
Restore the backup with TWRP .. boot to fastboot mode then flash stock recovery ... boot to system and run the setup wizard .. then check and do OTA until the last one is 3.28.401.9
Other option (but I never try this way ... so not sure about the risk of bricking) is do the RUU way (but you will lose everything on your internal/external memory so you need to do backup first) - see this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/general/htc-one-m8-european-signed-ruu-0p6bimg-t2911563
Whatever way, you need to do part 1 first ... change MID to 0P6B10000

Still Unable to do OTA

and Restored stcok recovery as link privide by you..still giving same varient error for ota update....
Looks like only option remaining is firmware restored as per your advise.. Please if you have any other help other than that, pls advise
Thank you

Great that you managed to change the MID.
You still have system variant error because you don't do the part 2 ... you need to change the ROM installed to a EU ROM .. use the nandroid backup that I linked. You need to change your ROM version from 1.54.709.12 to 1.54.401.10 then do OTA (of course after you flash the stock recovery)
Another thing that I notice that you use old version TWRP .. maybe the toolkit that you use do not update to the latest one. Old TWRP has this empty version-main bug.
Use the latest TWRP 2.8.1.0

Hi
Thanks i am downloading nadroid backup and will restore via twrp..
Downloaded file should be on SD card to restore or can be done built in storage? Currently i dnt have sd card. i have 32 gb vesrion m8..
OMG ur time and knowledge really appreciated brother

You can put the backup in internal storage as TWRP can read from internal, external and OTG (you need to select right location). You need to extract the backup zip on your PC, copy the folder 1.54.401.10 to the TWRP/BACKUPS/yourdeviceserialno/folder here
Make a backup of your current ROM, you'll see where the backup location is.

[Q] Still running 3.16.0.0000 and can't seem to update

Hello everyone,
I've been searching through the hundreds of topics here on the forums and have tried many suggestions but haven't been able to solve this yet...
I want to try and update my M8 to the latest firmware etc so need to go back to stock to get the OTA but I can't seem to do it. I think I'm running old firmware and can't seem to get s-off.
I get the following with fastboot getvar all:
(bootloader) version: 0.5

Can anyone point me in the direction of how to get back to stock so I can update this beast? I'm currently running ViperRom and philz_touch_6.48.4 recovery but have tried twrp-2.8.0.1 too.
I get the 'unable to mount' issue a lot and have only just got past the decyption issue.
Any help very much appreciated.

Thank you ckpv5. That's where I'd just come from. When I try restoring the nandroid backup (i flashed the TWRP recovery and tried it (extracting to folder and using 'restore'), as well as giving CVM a go too) it tells me there is no partition selected. In TWRP, after I've selected the correct folder to restore from, the next screen doesn't show me anything in the box there.

Surely it's you and your problem ....
Why don't you make a backup with TWRP say select "boot" only.
After reboot, you should see where actually that backup is located.
The extracted backup should go to the same directory
Read this step by step ... replace the numbers with your backup numbers
read No. 3 a-f (assuming you use my uploaded TWRP nandroid backup)

Thank you very much ckpv5, that's sorted things now.
I still can't get s-off via firewater (it gives me the 'whelp' message that it's not possible and will never be possible to s-off my device) for some reason though.

That reason is - HTC Patched it. It won't work.
The only other method to get S-OFF is through Sunshine S-OFF, it costs $25.

Why don't you just do the normal way ? 4.4.4 update just out for your CID
Here is everything that you need : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55076383&postcount=1726

So ... do you really want to convert your device to EU version as you've changed the MID ? Don't want to stick to your original MID and do what I said above ?
If yes ... the step still the same but slightly different as you need to wipe all data
All you need is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54953139&postcount=1674
So :
1. Make sure you have latest TWRP version installed

3. Reboot to fastboot and fastboot flash stock recovery, linked above too
4. Reboot - run the steup wizard then check for OTA, download and select install
5. Let the system do its stuff, once complete you'll be on 4.4.4 version 3.28.401.6 then agan OTA to 3.28.401.9

RUU for Stock Lollipop

Hi All,
I'm slightly confused and I was hoping someone could help. My phone is European with SuperCID, so I'm guessing I can install any RUU from the EU that has stock lollipop and it will work? An RUU will flash my entire phone back to stock right, including recovery?

Just did it before your reply! Sorry I forgot to include it initially.
I saw it ... you have T-MOB US version-main on EU device.
If you want it to be stock EU lollipop 4.16.401.10, this thread is for you : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735235
Or you can simply run RUU.exe - https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B17smFr95pleeTQ5U1NzNkZzM0U/edit?pli=1
RUU will flash your entire phone back to stock including recovery
HTC One M8 - OTA Update Error
Hello,
Could you please advise me on this,
Recently i purchased HTC One M8 from Aliexpress,
And it is a TEST Device, Hong Kong Edition.
I tried to update through OTA but after downloading it shows, " Your phone running modified version of Android, So installation will be cancelled"
I read some threads and i find it more complicated, I don't know what is the actual problem itself. Help me brother please.
Locked Bootloader
Software No: 2.11.708.2
Android Version: 4.4.3
S-OFF
CID: 11111111
Post your fastboot getvar all result (minus serial no. & imei no.)
OTA depends on your CID/MID and version-main and most probably you have a wrong MID for the software version
You should have 0P6B63000 for your current software version

Your device MID is wrong. You need to change it to 0P6B63000
See this thread on how-to : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708581
and the command that you need is here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54909204&postcount=136
after you change MID to 0P6B63000, install the stock recovery and try the OTA again.. it should work this time provided you have a pure stock 2.11.708.2 with all system files intact.

Thank you so much,
I have two questions ( I am sorry if it sounds dumb, i am a complete novice)
1. Does this process require Unlocked Boot-loader or Root?
2.Install stock recovery? Currently i have Stock Recovery, Is that necessary to install again after changing MID? If Yes, Could you share the thread link please?
Thanks for your time. Appreciate your help.
1. It requires root. If your ROM currently no root, then you need to unlock bootloader and install custom recovery like TWRP to install root/SuperSu
or .. unlock bootloader, install TWRP recovery .. no need to install root and you can run the command to change MID while in recovery.
2. If you already have stock recovery installed then no need. But I believe you need to do as no. 1 then you need to reinstall stock recovery.
All the files needed are in my thread as linked in my signature : http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/tutorial-how-to-stock-stock-twrp-t3086860

finding the right RUU

Hi,
second try. First post didn't go through... good thing I didn't save what I typed.
I'm trying to update my firmware, I've read somewhere that a RUU is the easiest way to do so. The one I found "somewhere" doesn't go through with the update proses. It spits out error 155, bootloader is relocked hboot version is 3.16.000 and I'm S-on (not that I was able to change that).
I'm loosing my patience and I'm about to throw the phone in the trash. I've some one can point me to a RUU that work with it I'd be in your debt. The carrier is O2 Germany BTW.
thanks and happy new year.
Even though I can guess which RUU that you might need .. is best to post
fastboot getvar all result without serial & imei no. to confirm it
If it is really a O2, I'll link you the RUU

Yeah .. not to post them online.
Here is your RUU - https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95916177934555499
This will update your device directly to lollipop 4.20.206.1
then after check for software update, I believe there will be a few more OTAs

Thanks for the quick response. I've started the download, but slow internet means it'll take about 45min I'll report back once I'm done.
I realized I haven't really said anything about my intentions, I did that the first time I wrote the post which wasn't posted because my session in the forum got kicked or something.
I wanted to update CM to CM12 and I've managed to flash a stock ROM with lollipop but wifi won't work. So my main concern was updating the firmware so that I can flash CM12. This would enable me to do so?
thanks again.
Restore a stock ROM, you can't use lollipop. Wifi won't work because you have hboot 3.16.0000
You only can restore 1.54.206.10 stock ROM and its stock recovery then do all OTAs up to lollipop then only it work for wifi and other thing.
Using a RUU will remove everything on your device including internal storage (so make backup) then it will update everything including firmware to lollipop. So it is faster compare the nandroid backup method. You have less OTA to do.
Got to rest now .. already in bed .. its 4 AM here .. I'll check your progress tomorrow .. good luck

When you asked for RUU I expect you know all the requirements to run RUU ...
Your problem is related to PC/USB to device connection problem ...
You need to relock bootloader before you run RUU because your device is S-On
(I believe you did that as stated on post #1)
and you need a Windows PC with USB2.0 and latest HTC USB driver installed.
If you're not sure about HTC USB driver - download HTC Sync Manager - http://www.htc.com/us/support/software/htc-sync-manager.aspx
install then after uninstall HTC Sync Manager but leave the HTC USB driver

You need htc_fastboot.exe to install the RUU zip.
Follow the steps as explained here but using your own RUU zip (skip that no.1) -

Or if you prefer the exe method .. you can follow this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67314040&postcount=1749

I unlocked bootloader using htc dev
Started the phone and all the apps optimized which took around30-40 mins
Now i shifted to bootloader installed twrp then installed supersu which i had already put in extsd
Phone didnt started for an hour stuck on htc screen
Used adb reboot bootloader and repeated everything all again right from fastboot oem lock doing ruu and all still it is same

TWRP straight back to BootLoader

I've recently installed Firmware and another ROM (RUU) they went thru successfully but only updated to Lollipop 5.01 which i thought was strange.. well anyway, i flashed TWRP and now it says entering recovery for about a second then goes back to the Boatloader page (fastboot etc) tried to restart and try again and it does the same every time..tried re-flashing TWRP and still does the same.. any ideas please?

Try wipe cache, and flash TWRP again.
Make sure its TWRP version 2.8.7.0 or 3.0.0.0. Some folks have been trying to flash older versions, some of which don't work on LP or later.

Did you flash TWRP before booting up at least once?
RUU to marshmallow doesn't seem to exist yet. (aka I haven't found one)
So update to 4.25 firmware which is lollipop 5.0.2 - I think.
Then allow phone to boot (make sure to have stock recovery), go through with all the OTAs which will come.
Once OTAs are completed successfully feel free to flash TWRP back.

hi again, the reason the original ROM did not instal was because i had changed the CID to a European one and was trying to instal a US TMOB ROM ..i changed the the CID back to a SuperCID 1st then installed the ROM and then changed the CID back to the original T-MOB010 CID so i could get all the OTA updates ..i will just leave it at this for now as i thought originally i had bricked my M8 - after the 1st flash the phone went into a boot loop :/ ...anyway, it's all sorted now and doing the many OTA updates but this particular one only updates to LP 5.01 .... i'm just wondering how i could get it to update to 5.02 or even 6.0? i will still try and change the CID & MID when i have enough information and am completely confident (and have a spare phone) then instal a European ROM and see if that get me the updates - thanks for the help

Perfect, so you figured it out Well Done.
Yeh, the best way is by changing MID and CID then flashing what you wish.
I wouldn't know since I am S-on.

I used Sunshine S-Off to do that.. payed the $25 ..its really easy and don't take long.
As for the phone, i think i'm going to do some serious research before i attempt anything like that again - its all up and running again, i'm not even going to flash TWRP this time until i really need it .. it's currently updated to 5.01 which i can live with.. i just wanted to taste a bit of Marshmallow i suppose it's a waiting game now - thanks again

How did you come about picking that firmware? Its not for T-Mobile US, its for Sprint.
In fact, its a good thing the firmware failed to install. If it succeeded, it may have bricked your phone due to partitioning differences between the Sprint version and most other M8 versions.
Be very careful about what firmware you flash. Don't flash any firmware you if you aren't 100% sure its the right one you should be using.

I do, but I'm confused since you stated in the OP that you already tried to do it "manually"?

Before we head in that direction, you need to understand a couple things about changes made requiring s-off. By definition s-off means that all (or at least most) security checks are off. So this means:
1) Changing the MID is a bit risky, in that you are manually editing/modifying memory blocks (not sure if "block" is technically the right term, but I think you understand what I'm getting at) using adb. Enter the command incorrectly (and modify the wrong memory block), and you can brick the phone! You have to be extremely careful about the process of changing the MID, and double check and triple check every single commands is correct (not a single typo) before pressing "Enter".
2) As mentioned above, flashing firmware also requires close attention and care. You need to be 100% of the firmware you are flashing. Once you've changed the MID, you are bypassing the very safety check that is designed to prevent bricks (from flashing the wrong firmware).
If you are prepared to use extreme caution and exercise the required care, then we can proceed with what you want to do (change MID, flash Euro RUU so that you can "convert" the phone to official Euro version, with full OTA updates).
Although another method (if you don't mind the lack of OTA updates) is to ensure you are on LP firmware (or flash T-Mobile US firmware or RUU to get to LP firmware). Then flash a MM custom ROM (which should work fine with LP firmware). This direction is much safer, as its nearly impossible to brick the phone flashing the firmware meant for your original CID/MID or from flashing a custom ROM.
Really, the lack of OTA is not a big deal, in my opinion. The custom (or near stock) ROMs get updated just as fast as the official OTAs (in fact, often faster depending on which CID you are talking about) so you can continue to keep updated by flashing custom ROMs. Honestly, this is my 3rd HTC phone, and the number of times I've installed official OTA updates is zero, due to the fact that the ROMs posted by devs here are just as good (or better) and just as timely.
Thank you for the advice & tips... the phone is S-Off (Sunshine) and bootloader Unlocked - all i'm wanting to do is go from T-Mobile US to a UK ROM like maybe O2 ..i'm on the giffgaff which run on the O2 network ... i have been searching for the correct Firmware without success - i have RUU_M8_UL_L50_SENSE60_MR_O2_UK_4.20.206.1_Radio_1.25.21331147A1.06G_20.69.4196.01_F_release_414450_signed
but just need to find the correct firmware to flash so i can instal this.. any ideas please? am very new to this and don't completely understand how to find the correct FW for a particular RUU

I discovered the reason TWRP was not flashing properly... i needed to update to Android 5.01 1st then flash TWRP custom recovery..that all works well now and i have recovery back but just put MID_Changer_03.07.14 on my phone and ran it in recovery - it all worked great but when i checked the MID it hadnt changed so ran again an still no change - i'm wanting to change that too 0P6B1000 (Europe) then the CID to HTC__032 ...then i will try to instal the above RUU - does this all sound like the right thing to do? i have been trying to find the right firmware for that RUU but cannot seem to find one or rather don't know what i am looking for - thanks again

Are you s-off? If not, you need to be s-off to change the mid.

Haven't heard of such a method. Can you link to where you got this from?
There is a proven method for changing MID on the M8, and that is not it.

Looks like you flashed an older firmware (really old, as in Kitkat Android 4.4.2), based on Post #10 (versus what you had originally in Post #1).

That isn't for the M8. If you look at that webpage's "Source" it links to the XDA One M7 section. That mod is for the M7, not the M8.
You're lucky it didn't brick the phone. I've already stated above in Post #6 how dangerous MID changing can be, if not performed properly. But it seems that you've chosen to ignore that advice.
No offense intended, it seems you are going about things rather recklessly. Already you've flashed an incorrect old T-Mobile firmware, tried flashing the firmware for the wrong version (Verizon) and now tried changing the MID with a mod for the M7. There is a proper process to change the MID on the M8. But I'm hesitant to lead you to that (of course, you can find it yourself - but that's your own deal), as you haven't demonstrated you are capable of the proper carefulness. And frankly, I don't want you messing with things that can easily brick your phone.
My suggestion would be to flash back to 4.20.531.5 firmware (if its not the current firmware) then just leave it that way until T-Mobile releases Marshmallow. Alternately, install a custom recovery (unlocked bootloader required, if its not presently), and simply flash a MM ROM; which should work find with LP firmware. These options are relatively safe, and don't require you messing with the MID.
