Custom roms vs Pure Android Lolipop... - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I am having a tough time deciding between Note 4 Developer Edition and the Pure Android Experience known as the Nexus 6. They both have their pros and cons but I am leaning towards the Note 4 if I can get a understanding of the future of Note 4 roms. Touchwiz bloat is on my hit list and the main reason why I cannot currently pull the trigger on the Note 4. I have had a Gnex since it was released and am sooo ready to move on but I loves me some pure Android and touchwiz is about as far off of pure android as they come.
So, do roms of the Note 4's future offer a pure Android experience with some of better features of the stylus and touchwiz thrown in? Or once you go touchwiz you are stuck with it?
If you guys are to tell me that soon, a awesome, mostly pure Lolipop rom will grace the Note 4 I can and will cancel my Nexus 6 Pre-Order so help me understand the future of the Note 4!
Thanks!
riz

I was having this same internal debate a few days ago. I own the note 3 and now the 4. I lone the screen size on the N6 but for me to spend that much money on a phone I need more. I don't like touchwiz but I love the functionality of the note series. I can always get a pure experience like on my N7 but for my phone I want some added benefits. When the custom ROMs start to roll out you can always get a pure android ROM.

^^ So do the custom pure roms on the Note 3 offer stylus functionality? and to be clear, does a pure custom rom hold a candle to a pure Nexus experience?

[Q] Development for 8" Version

Are there any developers working on custom ROMs for Tab 3 (8" version)?
I'm trying to decide between a Nexus 7 (2013 model), Note 8.0, and Tab 3 8".
Custom ROMs, preferably AOSP based, are very important to me. The Tab 3 has been out for 2 months and there are still no custom ROMs available for the 8" version. Are we likely to see some fully functioning CM or AOSP ROMs anytime soon?
Crickets.....
Well I made a post
Like this yesterday and a developer said they will be porting a stock 4.3 ROM to it soon but I would wait a month because the lg g pad will be coming out and it has some crazy specs
I bought a 8 inch version yesterday, awesome tablet even straight out of the box, but was shocked that theres no custom ROMS for it, is it dead or something?

I would not expect any development for the Tab 3 8.0.. This is just not a Tinker's Tablet..
If ROM's are what you are looking for, you need to return this Tablet.. Pony Up another $100.00 bucks and go for the Note 8.0.. I stood in the store for like 30 minutes holding the Note 8.0 & Tab 3 8.0 side by side comparing everything.. Even though they are both 800 x 1200 Res Screens, Our Tab 3 8.0 Screens are Brighter & Sharper than the Note 8.0 's Screen.. I TRIPLE CHECKED that..
Having just sold my Galaxy Note phone, I knew all about the S-Pen and knew it was something that I would not miss.. so why spend another $100.00 for a Screen that is not as Bright or Sharp as this one? That's why I chose the Tab 3 8.0 I also have the iPad Mini which is an 8 inch screen.. I now feel this is the Perfect Size Screen for a Tablet..
But, You need to choose between the Nexus-7 2013 ( I had one and returned it for the Tab 3 8.0 ) and the Note 8.0.. You will have all the ROM's Pacman, Carbon, Slim, AOSP, AOKP, CM 10.1 to choose from..
But.. You will either give up screen size or dollars for the luxury of running those ROM's..
I just Rooted so I could install a Custom Recovery do Backups and Remove any App I deemed not needed.. I'll play with some Xposed Framework if Launcher Theming gets too boring..

Hahaha. You returned your nexus 7 for a tab 3 8 too? Now we don't need to install auto hide! Bezel buttons FTW.
I actually have both the note 8 and the tab 3 8 right now. I still don't know which I'm going to keep! Pros for the tab are that its lighter and narrower, thus easier to hold when reading. Pros for the note are that the wider bezels make of easier to type on in portrait. The s-pen is a cool toy but ill probably use it 3 times a year. Speed is mostly irrelevant. I don't see a difference for day to day stuff.
I don't know what you're talking about the screens being different. I thought they are literally the same screen.... like the same part from the same factory. Is that not correct?

Hey Rum!
They are suppose to be the same.. but my in store eye test told me quite different.. maybe there are variables that we are not aware of.. But I set them both to full brightness and compared several similar screens.. and it was no contest in my eyes.. The Note 8.0 was good.. but the Tab 3 8.0 was better..
Good Luck in your decision Rumatt.
sad, until now still no Dev for Tab 3 8" and 10", it's more likely they all go for N7 2013.

S5 vs Note 2 vs Note 3

Is there anything on the s5 or the note 3 that I cannot do on my note 2(rooted and on custom ROM off course) ?
I know that the infrared remote thing and the s health things dont wprk.
The camera is not THAT good but its good enough for normal use
The battery in Note2 is better than s5.(I'm not very sure though)
And off course the stylus..too useful for me
My sister is looking to buy a new phone. Note 2 is the cheapest of these.. Should we consider note 2 then ?
Hello ,
Yeah ofcourse , Note 3 and S5 are honestly very costly . If you buy a Note 2 and root it and install BlackTox Rom or DN3 Rom then it becomes an ultimate gadget . When I bought Note 2 it was the latest flagship . But as Samsung every year releases 2 flagships , Note 2 became old . Then these revolutionary ROMs were created by our respectful devs which gave a lifeline to my note 2 and I'm very satisfied with it . If your sister doesn't hesitate in buying Note 2 , then I would definitely recommend that you should go for Note 2 :thumbup:

I agree with what Aeyan said but one thing we should keep in mind Note II won't see the next big android release since Google will stop supporting it soon.Compared to Note 3 which will get 5.0 for sure. So if you do root your sister's phone and such the latest version she can be on will be 4.4.2 or 4.4.3.So Note 3 might be a better investment compared to Note II.

I agree..so arent the ports as good? I'm sorry I'm still a beginner
For eg: my old phone was an sk17i. I broke the screen on that one but on the dev page there's always a new 4.4 rom

The current ports are awesome but most of us have had our phones for around a year if not more.So most likely we'd upgrade to note 4 this fall. We've been happy with what the developers are offering but since it's a TW based ROM,samsung has to depend on supporting our phone and then samsung tweaks it to add their stuff and releases to us.If you would only want to flash AOSP rom on note II then I am sure AOSP/CM developers will support note II for atleast another year easily but with AOSP rom you lose the functionality of many Samsung features like S note and other Samsung related software.
note2 does not have gorilla glass AFAIK..
For software features, almost all note 2 can have.
aah thanks!! but I just cant decide if 43k for a note 3 is worth it..note 2 was 27k last yr when I bought it and its 28k now.. No fall in price

How is the Note 3 as of Q4 2014 development wise?

Slightly disappointed by the nexus 6 so I'm considering taking advantage of the $400 note 3 deal for T-Mobile coming up soon. Is AOSP roms stable enough to transition easily from my nexus 5? How easy is it to install a custom rom on the Note 3?
I see deadly when compared to a Note 2 or Nexus.
The T-Mobile note 3 is super easy to root and ROM. I'm running the PAC-ROM AOSP based version now. It's working great, very stable, fast, and smooth.

Note 5 features on the Note 4?

One of the coolest features in my opinion about the Note 5 is the fact that you can take out the S-Pen and start writing instantly. I was wondering if that feature would ever be possible to bring to the Note 4 especially not having root because I am liking the Note 5 for other reasons as well as that feature, but I think I would stick with my Note 4 if that feature would be possible to bring over. Thanks.
Agree
I would love this feature. I would switch custom roms for this feature.

Custom Rom Development Request for Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Neo

Hello everyone,
This is my first ever thread on XDA. I have two Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Neo (SM-T111). The thing is, the tablet slows down a LOT due to the 768MB of RAM and a REALLY SLOW processor. Currently, there are no custom roms for this tablet. I do not like Dr. Ketan's custom rom. I want a fresh, clean version of Android. I was patiently waiting for a group who tried making an Unofficial Lineage OS rom for the SM-T111, but it failed. The tablet has Android 4.2.2 (Jellybean) and it has too much bloatware. Also, the Samsung TouchWiz UI is NOT optimized at all for this tablet. Despite the tablet's screen resolution being 540p, Samsung decided to make all the wallpapers and icons close to 1080p. The TouchWiz UI seems to be really bogging down this tablet. I decided to at least remove the bloatware, wallpapers, ringtones, etc., but the rom is really hard to deal with. Can someone PLEASE help to create an Unofficial or Official version of LineAge OS? I really need it. I have owned both tablets for over 8 years. PLEASE HELP :crying:
