Smartwatch 3 - NFC uses - Sony Smartwatch 3

Hi,
Just wondering if anybody has tested the NFC functionality? I am currently using the Smartband - and I use the NFC on the Core with Xposed Framework to unlock my phone (Xperia Z1). Aside from dealing with the annoyance of having Lifeblog constantly launching upon unlocking - I find it quite useful without having to enter a PIN every time.
Not many details on the location of the NFC antennas on the SW3. Wondering if I can truly replace the Smartband with the SW3.

There is smart unlock feature in lollipop so it will not ask for pin if smart watch connected, I believe you can achieve similar with xposed or 3rd party apps on previous versions of android

NFC works
If you got NFC on your phone turned on the phone recognizes the watch by bumping and opens the android wear app.

If the watch is off, nfc contact also turns it on.

I was testing SW3 NFC with newly purchased Sony SBH-60 headphones. No luck - nothing activates. The headphones worked fine once manually paired, but in my opinion NFC does not work, most likely is not supported by Android Wear yet. Which would be another big disappointment - no LifeLog app on the watch, no sleep tracking with use of Watch, no Walkman app, now no NFC support.

hey I'm about to buy those headphones, but I can't find any reviews about it, I don't know if you could tell me if they are any good, and if I can pair them with my nexus 5.
Thanks in advance.

So far, so good. Everything works as advertised and nice sound, overall yet I'm not an audiophile to comment on a lot. I think you should not worry about pairing with Nexus 5, but I can't tell for sure, no N5 around to test

Yes, this is the only feature that works. Not really useful.

Thank you BartManx, I'm also not an audiophile so I guess it'll be good to me too.

Until Android Wear starts supporting NFC, it's hard to test the full capabilities of NFC on the SW3. As others have reported, right now it just opens the Android Wear app on the phone.

Galaxy Note 4
I can't sync with Galaxy note 4. Any solution ?

According to the owners manual the NFC antennae is in the centre of the screen. Which makes sense so it can be used while on your wrist.

If you don't have Lollipop, but you have a rooted phone, NFC and Bluetooth can be awesome.
I hate using a pass code. I like waking up my phone and going right to what I want to do. However, if I ever leave my phone unattended, it would be nice to know that someone can't just get into it and start messing with things. So, I have a rooted LG G2 running Xposed. There is a module called: "No Lock Home"
In a nutshell, after you enter you Bluetooth address of the watch into the module, if you are wearing your watch and you walk away from your phone far enough to break the NFC/Bluetooth connection, the phone goes into lock mode (meaning you need a pass code or pattern or whatever you set up); once you come back into range of the phone, the pass code/pattern lock goes away and you're free from having to take the extra 3 seconds to "unlock" your phone.
Technology is the bees knees!!

There is an app called Skiplock which I believe is made by someone on XDA which does the same thing but without the need for root. You can use BT or Wifi for keeping the phone unlocked.

I'm not sure if my sw3 doesn't have (dont work maybe?) nfc or my nexus 5's nfc isn't working. Anybody could show me what happen when the sw3 is close to a smartphone?
EDIT: found it https://youtu.be/4YStUt_RPKs?t=5m7s
So or my nexus 5 nfc is fkd up or my sw3's nfc is fkd up lol
EDIT2: Ok solved. The replacement part I got for my nexus 5 was broken. I got use the nfc+wireless recharging combo from my old (original) back cover.

THANK YOU so much for this. This will help me - I hate using the knock code on my rooted LG G2 when I'm driving. Bob-on.

[Q] NFC while screen is off?

So is this possible? according to the Xperia commericals showing their NFC-badges you just swipe the phone over it. With the GNex you have to turn the screen on unfortunatly, is there a way to fix that?
EDIT: Mod can move this to Q & A, it's getting late over here.
From what I've read, this is a security feature in ICS, as NFC can be used for payments, etc.
I can understand why they have changed it, though IMO it should be an editable setting.

Ah, ofcourse now i see why but yeah it should be editable, though NFC is not that widely used yet i'd like to turn that security feature of until i connect a creditcard to my phone.

Every demo in the xperia video shows the screen on as far as I can tell, and unlocked.
The short answer though is no. ICS requires the device to be on and unlocked before the NFC service is started and the polling loop starts.
If someone wants to try to modify the underlying NFC service in a custom rom it's possible. I wouldn't recommend having it on all the time, but a behavior similar to Gingerbread (unlock was not necessary) would probably be desirable for most users.

To be fair they do make it seem like that's how it would work. Who would turn their phone on, unlock it and then turn it upside down BEFORE they get out of their car just to scan an NFC tag once they got out.
I don't see that being a reality though as the rest of the demos clearly show the device on and what appears to be unlocked. Given this is how the NFC service works within ICS, I'd suspect this will be the behavior as well.

Any way to enable NFC while phone is in standby?

I find NFC fascinating technology, and have lots of tags to play with. But the biggest barrier to putting them to good use is that NFC doesn't work while the phone is in standby. For example, I could put a tag beside my bed and put the phone into silent mode automatically. But if I have to switch on, unlock the phone and touch the tag, I might as well have just dont the task normally. But if I could leave the phone in standby and all I do is wave at the tag...that would be amazing.
Can it be done?
alicechong89 said:
The NFC function isnt turned on until you get out of the lock screen I think.
I've read in some other forums/threads that this is not possible mainly because of security reasons.
Example: If there was a stranger next to you with their NFC Tag really close to your phone, you wouldn't want your phone to detect the tag automatically without you knowing.

Thanks. The tag has to be REALLY close to trigger anything. But I think that should be a user choice rather than a forced one. Disappointing...maybe Android will change in the future to allow this.
It was introduced in ICS. With gingerbread it wasn't necessary to unlock your phone to read tags - I used to use a tag to toggle my pin lock screen & WiFi/data connection, which was quite nice.

I understand Google's concerns about security, but this is a poor solution. Having to turn on and unlock the screen completely removes one of the advantages of NFC technology - speed.

I agree with this.
Just started using NFC this past week and kind of sucks you have to unlock the phone to use it.
I wish there would be an option that we can choose this setting.

Best and/or coolest NFC task

Just purchased some tags, now thinking about my implementations.
Definitely going to have a work tag so I can scan it and turn ringer off, WiFi on, etc.
Got me to thinking what is the best, most effective, and coolest tasks.
Look forward to hearing your ideas.
opening a rick rolled youtube video and sticking it somewhere with a big ad to scan it
For one tag....
I have it either toggle my outdoor speakers, turn on the patio light or arm the security system, all depending on the time of day and the status if the system.
Love the things you can do with tasker

Does anybody know if KitKat supports Android Beam with WiFi direct? Because it should. I usually send stuff from my phone to my tablet and android beam is just the easiest way, Bluetooth just sucks though, so I was wondering if they finally changed it.
I actually used NFC to stop burning stuff in the oven. I have a tag that rings after 15mins and I always swipe the phone over it once I put something in the oven.

Congratulations.
I have turned location off on the watch settings as I don't need it. Battery lasts into a fourth day at the moment. Most useful so I have installed is wear mini launcher. Between that and using NFC to start my watch I don't need to press the side button on the watch at all. I also use Facer to make my own watch faces.

Tap on watch screen it will light up itself. I'm curious about how to use NFC to start watch?
I hold the SW3 against the back of my HTC One. If the watch was off it starts up. If it was on it opens the Wear companion app on my phone and connects.
No matter what I do I can't get nfc to work with my n6
it works with my xperia zl

I dont have anything I use the watch GPS for so I toggled it off. All I can see it would be used for is phone-free run logging, and I dont do that. Thus I hope to avoid any random app firing up the gps and wasting my watch battery. I just use the phone's location because it is hardly ever more than 20ft from my watch.

GWA2 compatibility with Huawei Mate 20 Pro

So as per the title im curious whether the Galaxy Watch Active 2(SM-R820) has any issues with pairing to a Huawei Mate 20 Pro(LYA-L29).
Im worried because in the playstore review section(galaxy wearable app), there are mixed reviews about their compatibility. Some have mentioned that they have no issues pairing them and some complain they are unable to do so.
Are there any users who have tried pairing them?
Edit: After going through the feedbacks, i have gotten myself the watch today(29/11/2019) and you just have to pair the watch and it will immediately prompt you to install the necessary app and plugin to get the watch working. So its basically plug and play(Emui9.1). Leaving this here to whom it may concern in the future.
I am using the watch with Huawei P30 Pro and have no problem. The watch is functional great and paring is great. But I'm still with Android 9, I don't know with 10 how it's going to be, I read that there was any problems.

Thank you so much for your reply. Hmm i guess its ok to assume that my model should work fine too. Just to be safe i will be going over a physical store and hopefully they have a demo set for me to test.
On a side note, do you have google support on your p30 pro? Just curious.
Yes. No problem with Google app and support, have all of them and works normally.
I'm thinking that you have no problem with watch. It's great, I'm really happy with him. Come from Apple and don't believe that will have a android watch, who approach is very close to Apple watch, must say that is better. My only remark is whether app, don't know why sync is so slow, but my monitoring is that all Android watch have this problem.
Good luck and go get it
I use my gwa2 with my p20 pro, no problems whatsoever, just a lot of extra apps to download, which if you had a Samsung device would be native I guess.
The only two things that I have noted compatibility - wise, are:
- when you set an alarm via you phone, the watch will not register it as an alarm, therefore will not notify you. This has to be due to the fact that huawei alarm app is not compatible with alarm of the watch and therefore will not sync (although my notifications are set for the huawei alarm app..)
-there are some times when the watch gets disconnected from the phone, e.g. If I go out of bt range of the watch without my phone, but when I go back close to the phone the watch sometimes remains disconnected and I have to open the wearable app to press "connect" again.
That aside, the watch is great and I am so far astonished by its battery life, which is more than 3 days most of the time (WiFi off, all other on, relatively low brightness and goodnight mode set every night during sleep, in order not to vibrate in notifications but still track my sleep)

I have a Mate 20 Pro and it works perfectly as long as Android 9 is installed. Last week I upgraded to Android 10 and that's not a good match with the Galaxy Watch Active 2. I constantly have disconnects and sometimes can't connect afterwards so yeah you can use it but don't update to Android 10 yet! In the update notes Huawei already warned that the GWA2 doesn't play nice with Android 10 on the Mate 20 Pro, but I thought that it couldn't be that bad, but it is. In the same notes they said that there will be a fix but I don't know when it will be ready.

I might be unlucky but since yesterday I have many disconnections [emoji23] I think though that it might have something to do with an update in galaxy wearable app that was received yesterday.
Notwithstanding the above, I do believe that it is a great gadget to own and I repeat that the best thing that I have noticed so far is the outstanding battery life, to the point that I forget to charge it, yet never worry of running out of juice... [emoji51]

I just got myself the gwa 2 today. So far everything seems fine. Still getting the hang of it. Its my first smart watch.
Anyway i realised there is a running coach in the workout, so if i make a custom workout, does the couch guide accordingly?
