Why is video playback quality so poor?

It is really sketchy and not good quality at all, my GS2 has better video playback quality
YouTube looks crap, ESPN goals does too (you can hardly see the football) and so does any videos loaded through the browser
What are your thoughts?
Cheers

Are you on WiFi or 3G? Are you using HQ option? Have you tried watching HD film trailers? Like one of these: (that was the first trailer I saw, introduced by one of the XDA members)

The one I got rid of had dead pixels so it was being exchanged by the network and that is the one I did the scratch test on because I didn't care what the network thought due to the way they pissed me around. The replacement which I am contracted to, I still have.

Can it be due to the GPU?

Well as long as you know I'm not trolling, I love this site, this nexus and the S2
But I am just trying to patch some of the things on the nexus I don't like by getting other people's opinions on how to fix it, eg how to improve the video playback quality

How about an actual video file you copy to the device?
Does it look bad then?
I think netflix looks like **** on this phone.. though I attribute that to the fact that it isn't in HD..
Download a nice .mkv 720p HD trailer from the web, and view. It looks stunning.

Anything you'd recommend mate?
And do you think the videos I have mentioned look bad due to them not being optimized?
What I can't understand is why the i4 videos are so stunning clear yet these aren't when there isn't much PPI difference
that's the problem of the super HD devices
regular videos optimized for the web are too low quality for the phone
you will need at least videos optimized for 480 if not 720 for it to look good
so in youtube you need to select 480 if 720 is not available
that means you will also eat a lot more DATA if you are on 3G / 4G
this is one of the many reason why GN wasn't so appetizing to me
specially when 3G & 4G networks are not as fast as they advertise them to be

Data isn't a problem for me with 3's "All you can eat data" but the video optimization is, I am a bit gutted about the quality
Thanks for explaining tho mate
download jetvd, a google search will do. then view it in 720p or you can download it to your phone in 720p
As for YouTube are you watching from the browser or the app itself?
I compared an HD video in the youtube app between the Galaxy Nexus and the SGS2 and the Nexus wins hands down... the detail is far superior because of the newer youtube app on the nexus. When the SGS2 gets ICS and/or the same youtube app as the nexus then maybe it'll be closer.
For large MKV files the SGS2 will win because samsung supplies codecs to view almost any video you throw at it, where as the nexus is constrained by the codecs that AOSP supports, which isn't nearly as expansive.
I have no clue what the **** the OP is talking about.
Check out the 2012 trailer in HD (should be the first in YouTube when searching for "HD 2012 trailer"). And make sure it actually has the "HD" icon in the vid list when you get your search results.
There is a little frame stutter... but hell, my $2000 i5 + ATI 6990 triple monitor gaming system also has frame stutter with YouTube (nature of FLV). The clarity on the other hand actually surprised me. It's just as good if not completely equal to 1080p MP4 videos (like Kanye's 'Lights') which also play awesome.

video credits goto TSO Photography and I am just using it for demo purposes. No intention to violate any copyrights to the owner. Mods, please remove the link if you see this is in violation to rules. I apologize in advance.
What do you guys use to play MKVs?
The SGS2 has its own codecs, when I used other ROMs I would use Moboplayer.
But Moboplayer won't download any codecs on the Galaxy Nexus so it's basically useless. Next I tried Rock Player, with hardware decoding I get good video but no sound and in software decoding I get good audio but suttering video.
So what to do? Re-encoding is a pain...

Coz that's the resolution the slow mo is available at, you can't set it higher than 720x480.

I did trim the video with the inbuilt trim feature in the video edit option it saved the video as 3gp could this have lowered the quality? Im not to clued up on this stuff but I thought it normally records in mp4 so either the trim option has converted it to 3gp or possibly slow mo is captured in 3gp to keep down the file size?
Ive just checked and the video trim has resaved the video in 3gp it was originally captured in mp4 not that this appears to have made much difference to the quality.
Im guessing at 8x slow mo it is recording at 240fps and because of the high frame capture there has to be a reduction in quality to make it possible.

It still wouldn't affect the quality of the video by much in the Note's screen.
It won't be good only when viewing in a computer or tv in full screen.
I hear people are not that pleased with the slow motion resolution but personally I think its great for a bit of fun. Sure not good enough for a professional production but its not meant for that. On the phone it looks fine... it was my favourite feature on an old LG viewty I had years ago and wow the resolution on that in slow mo mode was bad this looks crystal and very impressive in comparison. I know you cant really compare the 2 but it shows how nicely things have moved on.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
This feature is not meant for serious work, it's just a gimmick, a toy to enhance movierecording in the phone. If you really want you can bump up the resolution to full HD on the computer via thirdparty plugins in After Effects or Premiere Pro.

If you thought it would be different you had unreasonable expectations. A GoPro 2, which has a much larger sensor than the Note 2 and more dedicated hardware, can do 120FPS at 848x480p. $3500 DSLRs like the 5D Mk III can't even take video at more than 30 FPS! To think that a cell phone camera could take high resolution, slow motion video is just ignorant.
Whatever, I like this slow motion thingy.

Can you or any one else post slow mo videos somewhere else cause youtube is blocked in my country?
you guys need to get off the n2's nuts.
i didn't know it's so taxing on hardware for video to be recorded in slow motion. that is disappointing.
it's an interesting feature but it seems counter productive to the huge screen of the note2 since it can't be viewed in hd on it.
Here is my test on the slow motion function.
Have fun!
(Since I cannot post outside links yet, here is the info for the video
vimeo(dot)com(slash)62170068
Youtube(dot)com(slash)watch?v=TnMH_N2fSOA
Notes: When I was editing the video I saw some blur on the images, this makes me think that the camera don't actually captures 240 frames per second, but instead what it does is duplicate some of the frames and create a ghosting effect.
I need to do more technical tests to see the actual capture rate frame of the camera.
Can anyone try something for me? Can you grab the camera apk off the note 2 so I can try it on the samsung mega? The mega does not have, irritatingly so, the slow mo feature. Has to be the 4.2 camera app version since the mega is running 4.2. Thanks.

You can't adjust the Resolution at all.
It's always 720*480 for Note 2 and S4 Zoom; 800*450 for S4 and for Note 3; and S5, Z2, F7, K Zoom(aka S5 Zoom) and the newer ones, it's HD 1280*720p.

How is video playback?

Hi,
I'm willing to buy Galaxy Nexus and I'm wondering if it can play 1080p mkv video smooth.

Looking for a high qualityHD video to show off the AMOLED.

I'm looking for a legal to download 1080P/720P HD video that I can download to my SD card to use to show off the brilliance of the GNII's display. There were some old links to come Samsung made HD videos that were designed to show off the AMOLED displays but it looks like all the links for them were to MEGAupload which of course doesn't quite exist any more. I'd love to find something simiar. I don't really keep HD movies on my phone but I do want a short HD clips I can play that will hopefully really show off the chops of the HD Amoled display. Anyone know of something that will play on our Notes that is legal to download on the internets that would make a great display demo?

I was hoping for something downloadable since 3G/4G coverage can be a little spotty around here. Plus Youtube HD videos aren't exactly the highest quality HD you can get.
You can search for hd movie trailers downloads. Maybe something like the Avengers cause they have colorful costumes. Those are hd quality and legal.

Why aren't 1080p videos on youtube the highest quality you can get? Actually, I think it's the highest quality your phone can display. I don't know you, and this is crazy, but I just searched for Samsung Galaxy Note 2 1080p on youtube, and found a ton of 1080p videos for you to check out. And if you want, use tubemate to set the quality you need and download directly to your phone.
Orrrr.... you can record a nice video yourself using the amazing camera on 1080p and show it on that beautiful display.

Google "Blender Open Movies" there are a few hi-res movies you can download for free that are gorgeous to boot. My favorite is Tears of Steel (youtube). The main site appears to be down Tears of Steel. Also check out Elephant's Dream.
Well, you could get the youtube downloader from the samsung store. I did, and it works just fine.

Netflix in 4k HDR

Hi everyone,
I know that Netflix recently sent a list of all compatible phones to support 4k HDR and the Note 10 was listed.
What is weird is the Note 10+ wasn't specifically listed and at the moment no hd on my phone.
Actually looks really bad like when I was watching movies on my PSP back in the day.
YouTube in 4k is just gorgeous so not a problem with the screen.
Can someone confirm this is also the case with them ?
Does anyone have any tips for this ?
Thanks again

Yes nothing much there unfortunately.
If I had to guess I would say that its maxed out at 720p where as my OnePlus 6t seems to be 1080p.
I know that Netflix is picky about which devices get "HD" content but if the Note 10 doesn't then that's just insane.
How's Netflix on yours ? Do you get the HDR pop-up at the beginning of a video?
No pop about hdr. I just assume it plays in HD when there is a mark on the content.

How could you tell Note 10+ is not supporting 1080p. I have HD in my movie title. HD can be 1080p.
Maximum resolution is Full HD which is 1080p.
So no issue to play 1080p in netflix.

To clarify, the Note 10 PLUS has a 2K screen. The smaller Note 10 is just 1080p.
I don't know about 4K, but after the Netflix update of devices I can see the HDR tag on many of the movies and series.
This with Note10+...
I think that it is country depndent

No popup but I can see if the series is in HDR on the autoplay trailer screen, same as on my television.
It's HDR, 4K or HD.
You only get the logo your device supports.

As I posted the screenshot before, netflix supports HDR in note 10+.
Did you subscribe for the ultra hd monthly subscription plan? Hdr only available for that plan.

Note 10 is listed as the device which support hdr
I have had the ultra HD plan since the beginning so yes that's not the problem.
On my TV I get a round pop-up when I play a hdr video saying " hdr video playing"
This is common on all 4k hdr sets !
Besides talking about hdr and 4k I really see the image as crappy (which isn't the case in YouTube)
Like I've mentioned I know that the note 10 has been certified but we are on a note 10 PLUS forum. There is a difference and if Netflix validated the note 10 and not note 10 plus then that could be the problem.
I'll send them a email and report back my findings
I just chatted with netflix help center, they say we could not watch titles in 4K because our device works for 2K, but 1080p HDRs are working flawlessly for me. Should work for everybody

No, that popup is not common, I have two different Samsung televisions, one Note 10 Plus , my girlfriend has a iPhone 11 Pro and a couple of weeks ago I had a Galaxy 10±.....
None of these devices had a popup saying HDR is playing.
They just play in the best resolution supported by Netflix and the device.
You should check the app setting. As it shows support for hdr.
And you need to make sure the video quality is high.
I don't have uhd plan so I can't test for it.
