Hi all, so I'm coming here from my htc evo 3d which was s-off rooted romed all that. I never noticed until I switched to my desire but it seems that my 3d doesn't send data useage back to virgin mobile! I have not once in over 2 years of use ever been throttled down, as a matter of fact never even went close to 1gb of data! Now I turned on my desire and got throttld in about 4 days into my plan! I use the tether alot, on my 3d I used wifi tether trev mod, but can't seem to get it working on the desire? Does anyone have any ideas how this happened to my 3d and more importantly how do I get my desire to do this!!!?
confirmed no data usage
Figured I'd update this and say that I've confirmed my evo 3d doesn't report data back to Virgin!! When using wifi tether I downloaded 2 movies to my laptop about 3.5gb of data, and nothing shows up on my account. I'm in my third week of my plan and have used only 4mb of data! I use pandora for hours ata time, Netflix like crazy, update and add new apps no data use! My desire ran it up to 2309.8mb in 4 days, switched back to my 3d three weeks ago downloaded almost 4gb of movies torrents to test and I'm at 2313.8mb! Unlimited, free data, no throttling! I wish someone would help me out with this! I'll supply backups, logcats whatever is needed!!! Someone must be interested in this!

This actually seem's very interesting.
I know, right!? I figured someone would want to figure this out for all our benefits! Who doesn't need Truely unlimited data with no throttling, ever!! My brand new phone is collecting dust while I'm still using my almost 3yr old 3d because of this! And I don't know how it happened!! Any ideas? Maybe know someone who can help? Lets get this going, maybe we can make some kind of program to install this into our Desire!!

If there is a way to bypass the data throttling it's most likely illegal, and is not allowed on these forums.
Buuuuutttt...
Its not really bypassing the throttling, I think somehow its just not telling virgin what its doing? When I logg into my virgin account to check how much data has been used it doesn't show any. How do they know how much your using? Your phone must report it back to them? Somehow mine isn't, maybe somekind of setting or program in the phone that says " ok, I'm on your network using this" and mine is shut off or not working? Idk, but I'm desperate to find out! If it can't go on forum, p.m. me or email me.

Wait the Evo 3D doesn't have LTE, I'm pretty sure the throttling is only for LTE.
Nah, they do wi-max also. My girl gets throttled almost every month with her s2! Lol

So it's just your individual Evo 3d? Are you running a custom ROM of any sorts?
Yeah several, its rooted and s-off. I've run so many differnt ROMs I don't know if one of them did something that stuck? But I've also tried changing ROMs and it still does the same.

It's possible that a ROM did something. Or maybe your just a rare person who doesn't get throttled? Are you and your friend you mentioned with the s2 on the same plan/share an account?
Completly seperate prepaid accounts. The usaege screen on my phone shows that from 10/22-11/18 I've used 8.33MB of data, from 9/22-10/22 I used a whopping 99.94MB!! Thats not GB its MB, thats not even a quarter of a gb? And I know I've used alot more than that! I keep wifi off permanently, never use it.

I seem to remember seeing it mentioned in one rom (can't remember which one) it said it had htc logging turned off. Think that could have something to do with it?

I've got a Bell HTC DZ that's been rooted/unlocked and is running on the Rogers network with GV 1.5. I have 1GB data on my plan. Obviously rooting gets around tethering without having to pay for the actual feature, but can it somehow get around the data usage from USB tethering as well?
Here's why I ask...
All we've been doing is gaming SC2 which uses next to no traffic, and I've been checking to see how much I've been using in fear of going over or something. It seems as though my data has been untouched by the tethering... I downloaded a few songs just to see if it would change anything, and no usage. I then installed a few apps from the market to use some data just to check if the MyAccount app was broken; the data used from the apps showed up.
I've done some googling and could only find information about what I already knew with the getting around paying for the actual fee to have it enabled.
I'd be careful dude..in my contract with bell it says I have to pay $15 per mb when tethering I hope its not true!

Damn, that price is insane.
Definitely being safe about it, I know I haven't gone over at least.
If I called the carrier, would they be able to tell me how much i've used? Obviously I'm not mentioning any of this stuff lol.

If it is anything like T-mobile you are capped at a high GB per month, then after that you are throttled. They don't know when I tether, but they see my data usage go up quickly. Being throttled to 512kb sucks!
Bell's website is slow to update. Wait a day or two and you'll probably see your usage show up.

Yes, I've gotten my unbilled usage from 611 before, but I think it runs on the same schedule as the website/self serve. Oh yeah, there's a bell app called self serve, if you didn't know. Less hassle than going to the website.

So about mud day yesterday, I was watching YouTube, all of a sudden everything started buffering no matter what video I watched. Downloaded a couple files and speeds were only 30kB/s. Didn't think anything of it. Thought it was the host. Didn't do much else but use tapatalk and noticed things were a but slow. Did a speed test and it shot up to like 300kB/s then hovered around 30-50kB/s felt that awfully strange.. as that's what would happen on my old throttle plan.
So I went to bed not thinking of it.
Got up this morning and speeds were the same. Stayed the same for the entire day til I got fed up and called T-Mobile. They "said" I wasn't being throttled. And after I *****ed they "reset" my phone on their network and things were back to normal.
Has anyone else experienced like symptoms? I'd hate to think they went this low to throttle us..

Are you sure you have the truly unlimited 4G plan... Or the unlimited data with let's say 2gb, 5gb or 10gb of 4G data.
If you have the truly unlimited data then you shouldn't be throttled. But if you have one of the other three plans where they cap the 4G data then they throttle you after that certain point.
Or maybe t mobile was having issues with your tower and had to reset the connection?

It wasn't just my area though, both s2 and s3 showed same speeds. And yes I have the truly unlimited.

17 gigs? I really don't see how most people can go over 5 without tethering. I use my phone constantly and I've never gone over 2. Even with what I use on wifi, which might be another 2gb, is still not even 5gb's. So, I can only ASSUME you have been tethering, and they figured it out. That would explain the throttle.

You get 100 uses of tethering anyhow. Then they block you. But as psykhotic said get Netflix and watch HD movies and then tell me how much data you use. Not to mention you can download torrents via your phone. And I never use WiFi except for when transferring files to my phone.
But irregardless, it's unlimited, there shouldn't be a throttle period.

No not 100 uses of tethering.
You can use 100 MB before the block you if you already used the work around on the software they have on the phone.
The program by default on the phone though will actually block you right away.
Unless you use a custom APN then you get blocked after 100 MB.
If you change your User Agent on your browser the the User agent of the phone and you won't get blocked.

Soooo.... why not factory reset while on wifi? I don't understand why people treat the network as a substitute for a home network?
And streaming music doesn't use that much data, you'd have to watch 8 or 10 movies on Netflix to hit a gig. Don't tell me you watch 10 movies a week on your phone. I feel sorry for your eyes.
It is the abuse of the system that will do nothing but raise data rates for all of us. Thanks alot people, enjoy your rerun's of Charles in Charge.
Netflix even on the phone does use more then that. A 2 hour movie would be about 600 mb for that one move.

Well a little history is in order I suppose.
I've never come close to my 3GB cap. When I started in mobile share, I signed up for the 6 GB plan. Within two weeks I was at 65% of allotted use, so I switched to 10GB. Two weeks later I was again approaching the limit. I don't stream video, or Pandora, or anything like that. Something in my device is constantly connecting to 4G I'm seeing dumps of 50-60 MB at a time when I know for sure I'm home and on wifi.
I've seen what you guys are have been talking about. I don't download music or anything just average use like Pandora, Facebook, and of course xda.... And where I used to use around 4 ro 5 gigs a month my last bill showed I had used 17.2 gigs. Glad I'm grandfathered in on the unlimited plan. But seems strange how data has went up so drastically but I haven't changed the way I've used this phone and I've had it since the day it came out.

That's what I'm experiencing as well.
I just noticed something. When connected to Wi-Fi I still see the 4g lte indicator. It didn't turn off until I switched on airplane mode then enabled Wi-Fi after I disabled airplane mode, the mobile indicator stayed off. I wonder if mobile data isn't shutting off when I have Wi-Fi enabled.
Did you install any new apps when you started to notice this happening?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Nope. Just updated to rooted stock jellybean.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
I can confirm this on stock rooted JB...I've gone through 3 GB of data and I haven't even been downloading/streaming. If you use Avast! AV there's a network monitor that tracks your data usage. Mine says "system apps" are responsible for the heavy usage, but doesn't specify which apps.
Given a rooted device, BetterBatteryStats can track data usage with (theoretically - without knowing exactly what the problem is, this is an educated guess) a better breakdown of services than just "system data". Might be worth a try.

Hello, so I've been I've been searching around and haven't come up with a definitive answer. I've had the s4 for a couple months now and have been using an excessive amount of data, when I haven't been doing anything out of the norm. With my s2 I had a5 gb plan and only got throttled once in awhile, but with the s4 my data has jumped tremendously. I've used almost 16 gb this month and 21 gb last month.
Android os is to blame for 6gb this month and 12 gb last month, all clocked in as back ground usage. Why? Wth is this phone doing to use so much data. . I have unlimited no throttling plan, but if I was still on 5 gb I'd be screwed. I just would like to know how I can stop this.

Dude, nothing on your phone, other than maybe a torrent client, can use 21 gigs of data without your consent. And since its saying "Android system" is responsible for the data usage, its you tethering. Period. You asked, so i answered.
What part of saying I don't tether other than hotspot which I'm limited to 500mb from Tmobile do you not understand? Also said I haven't increased use from my what ive done on the gs2 and actually there are several posts online of others experiencing this as well but no solution. As far as your data, it can be many things. I would start by keeping track of each app's data usage over a few day span.

I have 3 lines, all with unlimited Internet but tmobil only allows 2.5gb of tethering. Currently using slimbean stable on my s4, how do I get unlimited tethering? I've tried Wify Tether app but it doesn't work.

Have they actually capped you? I used over 30gb last month... with native tether.... Otherwise use the search function and report back.... I'd like to know the answer also but too lazy to look
I don't think any AOSP Roms have the data cap hack. Most of the TW Roms have the hack baked into the system. You may wanna try TW before going over your data limit. I have unlimited and use tethering all the time also I use the Wi-Fi tether app instead of the native hot spot.

There is no such thing as a "data cap hack" there was one years ago, but it doesn't work anymore. All data traffic is now monitored via T-Mobile servers.

Agreed! What I meant by that is unrestricted native tethering.

So I am stuck @ 2.5gb? I called TMobil to increase my tethering, they said NO.
I see people all over the forums saying they have unlimited tethering by hiding their data usage and they always emphasize not to abuse it. I am giving tmobil a good large sum of money, 200 bucks.
So nobody knows of a unlimited tethering method?
Been looking around, according to some, Cyanogen should already come with the necessary coding to allow unlimited tethering but than again I am using SlimBean which I do not know if that has anything to do with it.

Again, unlimited tethering is impossible through "coding." It is handled by T-Mobile servers. A little Googling would tell you what you have to do however, I always thought if you paid 15 bucks extra each month they would include unlimited tethering?

Yeah I have been google and xda searching, I'm obviously not looking correctly or do not know what exactly to look for. Been trying to use the app Wifi Tether for Root Users but it does not show my device, only the atnt model, it's useless so far unless if myabe I go to an older version maybe?
I dont mind paying 15 bucks but they said they do NOT offer unlimited tethering only web access.
Is something keeping you from posting the information I am looking for or your trying to see if I can figure it out on my own by somewhat directing to a place I have already tried looking for but failed because I am a noob lol
Tried this video but no go.

Lol, im trying to teach you the wonderous magic of searching It seriously helps A LOT. I hardly post any threads asking for this that and the other thing because i always find it by searching. Its how i found the answer to your question However, unlike other XDA members, i don't mind a little coaching to help you get your answer, some guys are just like. "God learn to use search. Pointless thread. effing noob" lol.
But you were on the right track when you said "hiding their data usage." thats exactly what you need to do. And to add to your search terms, encrypt your data will hide the usage Go my young grasshoper, search and yee shall find

OK, I am an admitted noob to this site, just joined today in fact, but that is only because I have been trolling these forums looking for a clear answer to this issue for weeks now. I also have TM and am capped. I use my mobile hot spot to do my homework for the online school I attend. and recently switched from the big V to TM because of the cost, and now I'm screwed. I have searched so many forums and term strings it is not funny. I have tried vpn, hotspot shield, private internet access, and a host of wifi tether apps, and have not found a working combo. I have even tried modifying strings using SQLite. Most app combinations will not activate hotspot, and those that do cause laptop browser to redirect to t-mobile sale page. I will beat them... I will. But I joined xda for a little help, if you anyone does not wish to give the easy answer, I absolutely understand, just please direct me to the forum that has solved this as I am not "yet" a dev, but I'm getting there.
my config:
Model: SGH-M919
Android Version: 4.2.2
Baseband: M919uvuamdl
Kernal: 3.4.0-453951
[email protected]#1
Build: JDQ39.M919UVUAMDL
SELinux Status: Permissive
Rooted using ODIN because at the time I had read Odin was the only way.
Stock ROM

Using native tethering you get to share as much as you want what T-Mobile gets is that you used internet in your phone when in reality you were tethering I got like 60 GB each month most is by tethering

I've found that when I search and search and can't find something, it's because it was so fundamental a feature that it is automatically assumed people know how to use it.
What evidence do you have that T-Mobile is blocking your tethering after 2.5gb? Others have asked but it doesn't seem like that question has been answered. I have CM11 and have tethered like a fiend using the ROM's built-in hotspot feature, which the stock T-Mobile Account app doesn't even pick up on. Additionally I've been told that after 2.5gb, they don't block you, just throttle your speed down.

I use User Agent Switcher addon for firefox and choose Googlebot under Search Robots. I never get throttled using this method, although some site are wonky like netflix.
Well, apparently I did not try enough software combinations. I have finally got it working using Hotspot Shield free, paired with WiFi Tether Router. My GS4 is only about 3 weeks old, so this is likely the newest solution.

Looks like all I need to do is installed an agent switches extension on either chrome or firefox. That correct?

Yeah Im still confused as well and I have also done a lot of research on the topic over the past few months.
Running AOSP, can we just use the native tethering (works great for me but then again i believe im still within the 2.5 gb of allotted tethering) or do we need to use the user agent switcher method?
Well since you guys are on the right track
You have a couple options:
1. (Prolly the best) Purchase or use a free VPN client ON YOUR DEVICE to encrypt ALL your data, now T-Mobile can't detect what the data is, its just data.
2. Use a User Agent switcher to change your user agent so it looks like the data is coming from a mobile device instead of a computer.
I wanna tether to my Ps3, I would like to know if it is possible to hide tethering as well. Tmobile is capped at 2.5, I found a way to do it on my Note 3, but my Ps3 wont connect that way, it only sees my S4, but like I said, its reached its cap limit.

I've always used wifi tether from here http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list you just have to chose the right settings and it works perfectly. I use it on my 360 all the time.
