[Q] Need to start thinking about insurance - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Now that the wife and I have our Note 4s, I suppose that I should start thinking about insurance. When I got the S3s a couple of years ago, I just skipped the Best Buy insurance, and opted for the Total Equipment Coverage from Verizon. I had Best Buy insurance on the Evos that I had before, and it was terrible. In the first month of owning the phone, the volume rocker broke. They sent it out to be fixed, and it was fixed, but it took me a month to get my phone back. My wife had the dreaded Evo charging port separation from motherboard issue. She sent it to HTC, and had it back in three days.
What's your opinion on which insurance to go with. Is there something better than BB or Verizon? Has Best Buy improved at all?

Somewhere else I read people were using Squaretrade for insurance saying it was only $5 a month. I know nothing about it but I'm going to be looking into it when I get my Note soon. I know you can also add the phone to your homeowners insurance and a lot of them will replace a phone free but you do not want to do that very much or they could cancel your home insurance.

I got squaretrade. You have 30 days from when you purchase to get the insurance.

[Q] For those who got replacement EVO's

If you have recently received a replacement EVO, did you get a NEW or Refurb'ed phone?
Did they send you one or did you get it at a Service Center?

Sprint replaced my Evo back in August with a refurb through advance exchange. However, refurb was just as shiny and nice as a new one. I do not have a Sprint corporate store anywhere near me so all of this was done in the 3rd party repair center who then pushed me off to customer service and then it took 4 days of argueing to get them to replace my phone. The screen was falling off it.
I filed a claim through Asurion and they sent me a brand new phone next day.

I want to know what Sprint is handing out as replacements for defective phones.
So far what I've seen is if you get a replacement at a store you get a refurb'ed phone. According to Sprint a refurb has a new outer case and the guts have been repaired.
I've had problems with all the EVO's Sprint has sent me when I am Roaming (we have a second home in the mountains), in that the phone gets 5 or 6 bars of antenna strength, but it won't make calls or get data service. Looks as if it is trying to connect to a tower that is not provisioned for Sprint use. My Blackberry and my wife's Hero only show 1 bar of antenna strength, and they both get phone and data services. I hate having a premium data service that doesn't work, Sprint says they will replace the phone again, I just don't want a refurb'ed phone, dunno why, I just don't. And I don't think a new phone would be any better.
ive gone through warranty hell with Sprint and am on my 3rd replacement in 3 weeks. All have been refurbs, however they said if I have problems with this one they will replace it with a new one.
However I had to discuss this with the manager.
Due to the popularity of the Evo, I doubt getting a "New In Box" replacement from Sprint will ever happen. If you are willing to shell out $100 and you have the phone replacement insurance, you can file a claim through Asurion and you will get a New In Box replacement within a couple days. I have had to do it twice now (yes I am clumsy and my kids don't help my cause ) and both times I got a brand new phone within 2 business days of filing a claim.
They will give you Refurbished Phones, ive gone thru 3 different Refurbished before they gave me a BRAND NEW ONE
First Refurb - Bad Antenna
Second Refurb - Bad Volume Keys
Third Refurb - Wouldn't Charge
4th Phone brand New - WORKS PERFECT
I just got a replacement but its so nice and shiny i don't care, everything works thats all i care about.
I got my replacement a day after I filed the claim, it was a refurb, but badly refurbished. Looked like glue had leaked out the side, volume button felt funny, so I called assurion or whatever it is, and they over nighted me a brand new EVO. Unexpectedly it was they're suggestion I didn't even have the chance to yell at them to send me a NEW one. Pretty impressed.
Now I see you are talking about getting one from a sprint store, I had to do that when my charging port went bad, that was a refurb, but looked and acted as brand new. Sorry for the confusion.

Had a dead pixel after 20 days. They replaced with a brand new Evo, no questions asked. The store manager said they are replacing with new units, not refurbs, as of 2 weeks ago.
I'm a bit confused by what i am reading here. Does everyone get charged $100 regardless if you get a refurb or new unit if you are paying the $7 for the insurance? It sounds like some of you got new units without having to pay a deductible.
I'm not sure it would be worth it for me to keep paying for the insurance if there is a $100 deductible. I can pick up a used phone for around $350 on ebay now. Assuming the price drops in a few months, maybe i'll be able to get one for $250. Not sure it's worth paying $7 a month plus $100 to get a used phone. After a year, it would have cost me $184 which is not bad but after 2 years it'll be $268 which definitely doesn't seem worth it at that point. not to mention I've already been paying the insurance fee for the last 2 years or so and never needed to make use of it.
Some are filing an insurance claim = $100 deductible. I'm asking about what you get under a warranty claim. No charge for that.

1 year from HTC. But Sprint will replace the phone for most hardware problems.

Hmm, maybe i'll cancel the insurance then just for the next year. I guess i'll have to contact htc though since i bought the phone used off ebay so i'm not sure how that effects the warranty.

I'd say keep the insurance, it covers normal use, loss and damage.
Do not drop your insurance on a phone you bought off Ebay,......NEVER..having it is what saved me. I did not have to pay 100 though.

Well the phone is pretty much in perfect working order. There's one small defect on the top corner of the phone (which the seller mentioned) that doesn't seem to have any impact on the functions of the phone.
If there were no deductible, i'd keep the insurance. but a $100 deductible doesn't really seem worth it. What I've already paid over the last 2-3 years plus the $100 deductible is more then what it would cost me to buy a new phone. And that'a assuming i'd even get a new phone and not a refurbished one. I didn't realize there was a $100 deductible until someone mentioned it earlier in this thread. Which is my own fault for not reading the fine print.

T-Mobile insurance. Is it worth it?

I wanted to start this thread as sort of an informative type of thread. I know there will be other people wondering the same thing. I haven't had t-mobile in years and only dealt with sprint Asurion insurance.
I have been offered t-mobile insurance and I'm not really sure if it would be worth getting it. There were three options given and I wanted to get some insight from some customers that have gone through the insurance in the past. I am leaning towards the middle one that I think was 4.79.
Is this a good insurance to have or should I get the higher priced one that extends the warranty to two years?
Are there any issues over the phone when trying to get a replacement due to software or hardware issues?
How are the refurbs that are sent as replacement?

I went squaretrade too, with coupon code it was only $90 and covers 2 years and by then I will be on a completely diff phone anyway..
if they cover screen replacement or water damage, it's a decent protection, if you are ... accident prone like me
i used to take those insurance, when i was in school and couldn't afford a new device very often.
once i started getting better jobs, i stopped taking those, as i was switching from phone to phone before i can even crack the old phone

Yeah that's kinda where I'm at with it. I am very careful with my phones and usually go through phones pretty quick. I will feel much better about it once I get a case. I always feel like I'm going to drop this thing. I don't know if it's the weight or the slender build.
i just use the tmobil insurance u brick or wreck ur phone u take it into tmobil they replace it with a new one or refurbished one!
have you looked at the Best Buy insurance?
they are pretty fair and fool prof and it's affordable but the rates varies from phone to phone, so you might want to check in store

I got my phone through wirefly so I don't know if Bestbuy would warranty a purchase that wasn't at their store.
I did notice that squaretrade doesn't cover loss or theft so that wouldn't be an option.
I am leaning toward the PHP insurance option through T-mobile. Anybody here ever had any issues with that particular type of insurance?

Thats the thing i dont like the no loss of theft. but that deductible is killer. i wonder if there is a way to sweet talk them. and i do understand its a deterrent to prevent people from breaking there phone to get the updated hardware as they make revisions or lie and say they lost the phone so they can get a dev phone.

Baaed on the answers, I'm thinking that going the insurance route is the best option. This phone feels fragile so I'm going to cover my butt. I think the 4.79 insurance will do. Plus I can cancel at any time which makes It a better deal. I lobe this phone but I know from past experiences that I will probably keep it less than a year.

i got it as well. i would rather pay a little extra so im not always worried about the phone. better to have it and not need then to need and not have. replace the phone once and its payed for its self.
ive had/have premium asurion insurance thru tmobile. they cover 3 phones in a 12 month period. i know because ive lost 4 phones already and was left with no choice but to buy the sgs2 lol.
the deductible is what kills you. for any smart phone whether its damaged, lost or stolen, you have to pay 130.00 PERIOD and that includes free overnight shipping. if you order your new phone monday morning you will have it by tuesday afternoon. theres no sweet talking or getting yourself out of that deductible EVER. if your a clutz like me the insurance is worth it. 130 beats 500 any day.
asurion covers stolen, lost, theft, water damage, etc. i guess they dont really care what your excuse is for whatever happened to your phone because your getting ass raped with a deductible. either way i WOULD recommend them. its a small price to pay and believe if you ever do lose your phone you will be more than thankful that you had insurance on it

With T-Mobile insurance and warranty... you get a phone... you damage it... there is a deductible. If it's the phone itself, the warranty covers it. Better to pay the deductible then retail of the phone. The phones aren't getting cheaper. You have to think MSRP.
I've been selling phones for dealers and corp for 5+ years. Insurance is a double edged sword. Yes it costs more monthly, yes it adds up and yes there is a deductible. So it's a gamble. Is it worth it? Yes. Is it worth it if nothing goes wrong with the phone? No. But that's the gamble.

You're paying for the second year in contract for the warranty part... So you pay it the first year when it's covered anyway.
Insurance covers everything... then there is a deductible. Anything happens to the phone, you make a claim and get one the next day. Handled by Asurion.
If you add up the monthly charge for insurance alone + the deductible... you're looking at about $250. If nothing happens and you keep your phone, then you paid insurance for nothing. But that's just insurance... that's how insurance works. If you break it, lose it or get it wet within the first couple months... pay the deductible and get a new one... was insurance worth it? Yes.
Next year... let's say something happens... you've been paying on insurance, pay the deductible. Could you maybe have bought the phone from someone else and saved a little coin? Yes.

Hey, I got my daughter's Sidekick 4G through Wirefly and they offered some kind of insurance for like $70 up front or in monthly installments. And I do believe it covered accidents and theft. Check into it.

yea i see where you are coming from. just wish i was in a different industry where my phone would not be exposed to so many elements.
Get the bundle. Sure it may be $7/month, but the insurance and warranty cover phones that you buy in the future too. (Even second hand phones)

E4GT insurance

Just bought my phone yesterday & have 14 days to decide if I want opt in with Sprint's insurance plan.
I did so because I wanted to see what other "alternative" insurance competitors had to offer.
Ensquared seems to be pretty good but some things to take into consideration before choosing them:
Monthly premiums are less: $4.91 vs. Sprints $8 which comes out to $58.99/yr. vs Sprints $96/yr. And with Ensquared you pay the whole plan fee up front.
Ensquared's deductible is $75 BUT it's my understanding that there is a $35 admin fee for the first claim and a $25 admin fee for the 2nd & 3rd claim (wtf!!!).
So with Ensquared it comes out to $110 for the 1st claim & $100 for the 2nd & 3rd claims (admin fees included), whereas Sprint has a $100 deductible for 3 claims within a 12 mo. period & no admin fees (I think)
Both Ensquared & Sprint cover up to $1000 on each claim.
On Ensquared's 1 yr. plan you can file up to 2 claims within a 12 month consecutive period, their 2 yr. plan covers up to 3 claims BUT the 2 yr. plan asks for an up front payment of $99.99 which comes out to $4.16/mo. or $49.99/yr.
Sprint also allows one the option to cancel at anytime & receive a prorated credit of your unearned premium, not too sure about Ensquared.
So taking everything into consideration we can see that Ensquared's monthly premiums are lower BUT when filing a claim it costs more.
When calculating all the numbers between the two on a 1 yr. plan basis & using 2 claims within that year. Ensquared comes out to $268.99 & Sprint comes out to $296 (but you have one more claim left)
In the end I'll probably go with Sprint for 3 major reasons: The biggest is no admin fees, the 2nd is a higher number of allowed claims given within each plan period & the 3rd is the ability to recomp any unearned premium.
If anyone here has experience with both can you please post any additional pro's & cons between the two including the level of customer service.

I pay the $8 insurance on both of my phones. It is really nice being able to walk into a Sprint store and walk out one hour later if you have an issue. When I had my OG Epic, my screen went bad. I brought it in and they not only replaced the screen but also the keyboard and battery cover. It was like getting a new phone.

This is where having the insurance doesn't seem to make sense... I don't carry it, but if my screen goes bad, I wall into a Sprint store, pay $35, and they replace the phone under manufacturer warranty. Only down side is it sometimes takes a day store a replacement to arrive.
In your case, you had to pay $100, or the cost of repair, right?

Maybe I'm wrong, but as I understand it, any insurance claims require you to send the phone to Asurion. I don't believe the Sprint stores handle any insurance claims.

Where did you read that the first claim has a $35 fee? First claim is $75, after that it's $100. So for one year it's $60 and two claims ($75, $100). 2 year it's ($75, $100, $100)

I read it on their page, unless it was for a different type phone. Either way it's still ridiculous.
I don't have Sprint. Ensquared is considerably cheaper than my options with AT&T. Even compared to Sprint's TEP, if something happens after 12 months, that's 96+100= $196 for replacement. With Ensquared it's $135 if you have 1 year plan and $175 with 2 year plan. Not ridiculous at all.
I was going to stop my Sprint insurance last week because I baby my phone and nothing ever happens. Then my phone stops working. After 45 mins the tech couldn't bring her back to life so they swapped it out right then and there. Usually they order one and it takes a day to get there but I got lucky. Lesson learned it's nice having Sprints insurance. lol

The $100 is only for lost/stolen phones when you go through Asurion. I have taken phones into the Sprint store and got them fixed or replaced without paying anything since I have TEP. A friend of mine that is a fireman and does construction on the side breaks his phone a few times a year and never pays for repair or replacement. Think on his latest phone he switched to Best Buy's insurance and then switched back to Sprint's after his first claim with BB. They sent his phone out for a month before finally agreeing to replace it. Sprint he has never waited more than 2 days.

the $100 insurance claim also applies to broken screens w/more than a 1/2 inch crack. My wifes EVO dropped a few months back and the screen is nearly shattered. Only way to fix it is to file insurance claim and pay deductible. Sprint stores wont even touch it. Good thing for her is its still usuable and shes waiting a couple months for an upgrade.
Call your home insurance. We're with Amica, and when we asked them about additional coverage for our electronics, they said we could insure all of our electronics (2 cell phones, ipad, 2 Touchpads, computers, etc.) for ~$50 per year. This would be used for worst case scenarios, such as losing your phone, or breaking it beyond repair.
If you have an issue like a bad screen, broken camera, defective microUSB port, etc just take it in to Sprint and pay the $35 to have it repaired. The only way the $8 TEP program is beneficial is if you're very clumsy and/or your phones seem to always break.
I work in a metal fab shop and my phone speakers go out a lot so 8 bucks a month is a good deal for me.

Well I'll agree that $50 per year to cover your electronics is good but is there a deductible that must be met first?

I probably would have gotten it but this time around after they raised it to $11 I purchased best buy protection. I know it doesn't cover loss or theft but it's no deductible and unlimited claims plus they give you a loaner if you need it. But for those who don't have that option it's a good idea to get it at least for the first year.

I have heard bad things about best buy insurance. I haven't personally tried them to say it's bad.
I have Sprint insurance for a about 7 years now.... And they are pretty good with replacements. The deductible sucks but they are quick with sending a refurbished phone or if you are lucky, a new phone.

It's hit and miss. I had bb insurance years back and never had any issues. For the past 5 years I've had Sprint insurance but after the last experience at my local Sprint repair center I called it quits. Decided to try bb again. When I had bb several years ago it took them 3 days to get me a phone which is average for Sprint also. It all depends on the situation I guess. It's always good to have a loaner available.

For the past 5 years I've had Sprint insurance but after the last experience at my local Sprint repair center I called it quits. Decided to try bb again. When I had bb several years ago it took them 3 days to get me a phone which is average for Sprint also. It all depends on the situation I guess. It's always good to have a loaner available.

I used to work for the geeksquad helping implement and coming up with new software for them to fix computers. BB their return policy and their phone insurance is 2nd to none. it may take like 3 days to get a replacement but they were always quality refurbs and you could break one every day (every few days) if the refurbs aren't to your liking you just complain to a store manager and they will give you a new one lol. Just to test it and fufil my dreams of spiking an iphone on the ground I did that using their phone insurance and than the next week returned the refurb. The people that work there have 0 clue about anything lol.
Furthermore I hate bestbuy and the geeksquad horrible place redundant processes. SO i am not trying to say they are good by any stretch of the imagination they just have a poor system and people with foresight can work it to their advantage. lol

I can vouch. I didn't work for sprint but have many horrible experiences. Only thing good about it is you'll get your phone pretty quick, only problem is most refurbished phones are done by companies that aren't too good at doing it.

i dropped tep for the 2 reasons most others did. they bumped up the mothly payment to 11 bucks and the deductible to 200 dollars. thats $264 in premiums over the 2 year contract plus the 200 dollar deductible makes it 464 dollars if you have to replace your phone once. i assure you that you can buy a used note 2 for the same price online at swappa or craigslist and the such.
i went best buy black tie this time and paid upfront. 169 for 2 years with no deductibles.

Exactly what I did. Paid up front and saved money. Plus at end of 1 year if I don't see as cost effective anymore I can cancel and get a prorated refund.

when you signed up for ir did you get the "mobile trade in plus" deal?
they give you a 50 dollar gift card on top of whatever the current trade in value is. its free when you prepay for the bb insurance.

They have better rates than bestbuy and sprint, and a lower deductible..has anyone heard of this company before? I'm like 4 days into having my note 4 and kinda thinking about insurance. bestbuy decided to impliment a protection plan identical to sprints. :/
No. But you have got me interested. Im going to call them this week and get some more info. 11 bucks a month for sprints insurance, its half the cost. One thing about insurion (or what ever their name is), i know for a fact they pay claims. Ive used them once when I dropped my droid razr maxx hd in my coffee. Had a new phone in 2 days. Not sure how reliable this one is. But Im definitely interested in knowing more. One thing that is a red flag is it has Sprints deductible at 200 bucks. Mine is 100 bucks, or at least it used to be.
Let me know what you find out. Ill do the same after I call them.

Unfortunately with the premium phones the deductible is $200 and $300 if you lose the phone. I will be looking into this tomorrow also.
I would read the reviews on Amazon, I was all for buying through square trade... Now I am rethinking it
I actually use to sell Square Trade and use them for all my electronics (except phones because I haven't broken one yet). If you read the comments you'll see that they're 5 star rated on Amazon and have an A+ rating with the BBB as well as numerous awards for customer service. They're totally worth it though I'm not familiar with their phone policies, I only TV, computer, and tablet warranties.
I do know that if you intend on keeping the phone for the full two years you can just buy the insurance instead of doing monthly installments. In the end it saves you around 50% give or take.
If you want more info call them or go in to a TigerDirect, they sell them there. You can get a device anywhere and buy the Square Trade at Tiger, just make sure to tell them you saw the online price and it was cheaper, it'll knock down the price.
Squaretrade is about the same as any warranty, customer service is ok, once you speak to a supervisor. Most lower reps don't know what they are talking about, when my note 3 screen cracked they replaced it with a new phone from amazon, but I was told that was a one time deal. Otherwise it is "gently used" or open box items. I paid 89 for two years with them, but I am also paying 13 a month with sprint and will probably stick with sprint unless Squaretrade does that again. Only recommend them if you don't want to shell out a monthly payment with sprint

Have we found out anything else regarding squaretrade? I haven't had a chance to call them at all but I'm thinking of just going with best buys insurance, even if the deductible is crazy high. ..
I have SquareTrade on both of my tablets but fortunately I never used the policy... I would insure my phone with them but they don't cover theft or loss like Sprint does.

Come on guys, Google is your friend! Squaretrade is either $5 a month or $99 for two years. They don't cover loss or theft and their deductible is $75. Across the board they're more affordable than everyone else. You can also get it on any device at any time, you just have to prove it's working I guess.

I am interested in switching to square trade but other than theft coverage Sprint's tep has one other benefit. There have been times where I go to a Sprint store for an issue, like my wifi radio not working anymore or something else. They have replaced it for free. Sometimes with a new device.
It looks like with square trade it's cheaper but you get a refurbished or used device.

Sprint TEP will replace with used/refurbished phone also. It even states that in the fine print. It even says they can replace with different device of equal value.
I've used squaretrade for years, they're a good route to take, but as with any contract, be sure to read the terms and understand what you're reading.
