[Q] Advice on software updating - Sony Xperia M

Hi all,
I've got the C1905 Xperia M.
Overall I'm very fond of it...
A few problems too... Kinda disappointed that it didn't get 4.4 I was looking forward to that update...
I think it's kinda lagging for its capabilities, internal space is poor, would like apps on sd card. The only problen is I'm unsure of the technical "terms" involved in this and I know its risky!
I'd like to get more information on the different types of ways of increasing capabilities on my phone... WITHOUT bricking it!
Like bootloader, flashing and flashing.
Thanks

without rooting?... Hmmm..... may be your device is having a lot of background running apps , thats why its lagging. Try Greenify app ... it will stop background running apps and your device will work fast.... and try Nova launcher too...
Hit THANKS if I helped you

use clean master app to clear the cache memory

Sorry... I think I've been misunderstood! :crying:
I want to root my phone but I'm afraid of bricking it...
If you could specify my options that would be great!

No need to worry bro.. just follow step by step instructions everywhere ..nothing else
and even if device gets bricked..theres nothing to worry..just flash firmware (.ftf) by flashtool.
Here you go..Basics
1. ROOT:- http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-m/general/towel-root-steps-to-root-t2789990
2.For bootloader unlocking:- http://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/unlock-yourboot-loader/
3.To flash recovery install minimal adb and fastboot and then paste any recovery flie(.img) which you need to flash in the installed folder and then open cmd window in that directory and type the commands as in the screenshot (Note rename "boot.img" to your recovery name)
and if you wish to increase internal storage then follow the Storage Swapp[ing guide:- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2711280
Just follow these steps to get freedom :silly: :highfive:

[GUIDE]For Starters(Newbies)

NOTE: Noob is not a really good word. kinda discriminating. newbie better.
THIS will GUIDE how to get on foot if your just starting on Galaxy Y, most probably, ANDROID
1. First Things first. Know your Phone. before doing anything, just be on the stock for a while. Know all the things, settings, install some app and alike. This way, you'll know your way through. See apps like market, Maps and others, check bugs etc.
2. Second part is knowing a basic tweak of your phone, to be exact: BATTERY SAVINGS. Know your way from this apps. See how they handle your battery life. The purpose of this is to know the performance of your phone
3. So you feel much better knowing your phone, you can start rooting or installing some replacement apps Go, ADW, Pansi, Popups, keyboards its up to you. But i dont recommend instant rooting when your just getting on foot.
Rooting wont brick the phone, maybe but its in the least.
(I wont be giving links for many threads here are available already. Its hard just to give you everything when researching can't kill one)
WHAT IS ROOTING?
rooting gives you access to the system of your phone. thats it
Soft ROOT-stated in the above
Hard ROOT-gives you access to the commander of the system which allows you to access the device via shell extensions and ADBs
4. Same as step 1. See how does root work for you. Dont just access the system right away using an explorer. look for apps that can help you achieve your desired goal that requires root access. a good start would be RAM tweaks.
5. Removing apps that you dont need. Its the power of Rooting that grants you this. basically, it improves RAM usage and speed of the device especially when "app-example.apk" initiates on its own. ofcourse it increases the capacity of your device.
6. KITCHENS. for a start you can use the UOT kitchen which allows you to modify some parts of the device. as far as i know, mods like transparency, lockscreen and bootanimation wont work on stock dont ask why coz i dunno sorry. so using this kitchen can allow you to change statusbar appearance pull down notif bar, etc.
but, the MAIN concern of a KITCHEN is ROMS.
ROM is the thing that the device reads for it to run properly.
ROM development are for making a benefit that can help a device achieve its fullest performance. Speeding it up, etc.
You can see the Development Page for it

since SGY got a small memory for internal, u can use partitions in the SDcard to let it handle some memory for you.
BOOT recovery:
it is where you flash mini updates like rooting CWMod, UOT kitchen mods and others

sure thing but it would be really better if you read some threads here. a lot of those stuffs are already here
1. download the rom you needed/wanted
2. download odin v1.85 w/ totoro.pit
3. turnoff phone remove sim + sdcard
4. open odin and put the files into:
boot
pda
csc
modem
something like that. put there the files you downloaded.
check if re partition etc are checked
then now get the data cable, and put the phone into DL-mode
(HOME+VOL-DOWN+POWER) hold till it boots into DL-Mode
pressing VOL UP- continue
VOL DOWN- Cancel
press the vol up so and youll be on DL mode
connect the cable wait for it to be recognized by the Odin, if ok pray and start.
just takes around a min to do so. the phone then reboots automatically. do a hard rest and boot again.
voila
since your a filipino you can check symbianize.com for infos. reading some guides there by our masters will surely help you
*so as the rules say here read threads first before asking though its ok for me. it would be nice if i'd helped you bro

Download FlashTool from here.
Install it. Select the path C:\Flashtool to make it easy to find
Download the FTF file from here.
And copy it into the folder C:\Flashtool\firmwares
Now launch Flashtool by double clicking on the Flashtool icon.
Click the Lightning bolt button.
Choose Flashmode.
Accept all the defaults.
Wait until the animated display comes up showing you to turn off your phone and do what it says.
Allow the program to flash your phone back to Verizon stock.
When it reboots, you are totally back to stock again.
Now follow up with the threads in the Development section on how to root and install a custom recovery.
Good luck!

Did you backup your TA (Trim Area) with Omnius before you had these problems?
If not, your best bet is spending $24 with Alejandrissimo to fix your problems.
(It sounds like your TA is screwed up, so reflashing anything won't help (as you already tried))
(They had this problem when the R800x was first unlocked, but it hasn't reared it's head for a while)

Is it overheating? If not then it's probably the system getting overloaded and the kernel taking a crap. It happens some times unfortunately

Xperia Arc S - Help With Install Cm9

Hello everyone,
im new in this forum, and two devices with android, the first is the "asus transformer prime" and the second is a new cellphone - Sony Xperia Arc S - and this is the problem.
I really dont like what sony do the android, the interface, beside iam very familiar with standart ICS in my "Prime" so i search a bit and found some posts about Cyanogen 9 (talking about performance ans stuff), but in that same posts i read that CM9 is only for "Xperia Arc" not "xperia arc S" and i need to use some external "kernell" to be loaded.
My questions are:
What i need to do to install CM9 at "arc s"?
What the procedures?
I need a external "kernel" or just extract the zip (cm-9.1.0-anzu.zip) and get the *.img ?
What is the easyest method to install it?
Can send me a easy guide to do it?
and finally. it will work in portugal? with the operator TMN?
Can someone post the link for one guide to do the install, that actually works?:fingers-crossed:
Thanks in advance for the answers
If i can make a clean and smooth install, for sure i will donate
(sorry my english)
p.s- i know they are a lot of posts about this, but is because that i cant find my way through they.
Install instructions:
1. Flash kernel (fastboot flash boot boot.img)
2. Install a Recovery (there are some around this forum)
3. Wipe (only required 1st time)
4. Flash Rom
5. OK!!

o.k, but which files i should use? can u post some links?
preferable the most stable version, i know they are a lot of them but cant choose because i don't have any experience on it.
Im thinking is use one of this two, whats better?
1 - this kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1520654) with this room (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526717)
or
2 - this kernel (FXP128, by FreeXperiaProject) (come people say works fine) whit this room ( http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=anzu&type=) cm-9.1.0-anzu.zip
please advice,,
Thanks everyone
Hi all!
Hi!
to flash the kernel you'll need to do it via Fastboot. There are some guides in this section to help you get CWM recovery easily, but if you're a noob like me I'd give try to Flashtool (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000012).
It's a little program that helps you out flashing kernels, roms and some other joyful gift from xda...
Try it out and let me know!
For the ROM/Kernel choice if you want a clean AOSP (android stock) experience go with the FXP CM9 or AOKP (for a little more customization)... If you browse the "Android Development" section you're going to find plenty about it and in the related thread you'll find some help with kernel choice!
I actually am on JJ's Hybrid Rom with ArcKnight kernel, it's based on Sony's firmware but looks like aosp (I don't like the CM9 camera) and it's really smooth!
Cheers and let me know if I helped you out! :fingers-crossed:

Hi ,
I believe you
Really helpfull man, i take a look at your description and look really nice room.
And i even have a option to install it with "Locked Bootloaders"(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1673489) so if someting goes wrong i can restore the phone with Sony software (SEUS).
Can you tell me if this are the files you use? (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1537717) you apply the patch too?
Im really happy with your feedback (i can see now some light at the end of the tunel)
To finish i have just one more litle question. is about the "baseband".
I am im Portugal and my phone is under TMN phone line. do you know if this rooms works fine? (i suppose it works because you can update too official ICS before start installing JJ's Hybrid Rom, but can you confirm this?) my thought is correct?
Best regards, and thanks for the reply.
Yeah that's the thread!
I applied the patch but it works just fine as it is, even without it!
baseband should be no problem, the problem is combination rom/baseband and not baseband/network (dunno if I can explain myself, sorry about it).
In other words, if your phone is on ics .431 stock and you flash this, you'll get the same baseband and everything's gonna work out!
I unlocked my bootloader so I'm not familiar with that kind of install but it should be even easier.
Let me know if you need any help about it, I hope we are not going too much OT!
Happy to help!

Nice :good:
i understand what you try to explain about baseband. no worry
dont know yet if i install this room by "unlocked bootloader" or "locked".
The Locked version have some vantages right? if i want to go to stock ics i can keep update the cellphne by Sony software. But im wondering, how many time the sony will update this phone? maybe not much,,because already listen someone say it will no get jellybean official update, so im really think in "unlock bootloader".
about the patch, how apply the pacth? right after instal the room, or reboot a couple of times them instal the patch?
by the way can you send me a link with the method to install it? dont want to mess with the room itself.
Thanks for all the support , really appreciate :highfive:
well,
I think this thread is the best if you need some guidance, I don't think I'd be better that this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1653188
Anyway if you unlock your BL, I'd proceed like this afterwards:
-backup all the things you need to keep from your phone because you're gonna delete all the data!
-download Flashtool, install all the drivers inside the drivers folder after the install, launch it and try to get your phone in "fastboot mode" (click on the lightning and select fastboot, then pick the button that suites you better )
-download the kernel you chose and flash the img by pressing "flash kernel img" in the fastboot menu (you may need to flash wifi modules later, so download them and put them inside your sd card
-download the .zip file of the rom you chose and put it inside your sd card
-ALWAYS DISCONNECT YOUR PHONE FROM CABLE BEFORE YOU TURN IT ON, not always, but sometimes it makes android crash
-turn on your phone and keep pressing volume down till you get to recovery
-select "wipe data/factory reset", "wipe cache", go to "advanced" and select "wipe dalvik cache"
-select "install...." (second option in the main menu) and then install from sd card and pick the ROM file...
-after the flash is over, do the last step again and select the WIFI MODULES
-reboot to system, check if everything's working, if you want to apply the patch (in JJ's rom case) turn off your phone, get to recovery again and install the related zip...
Anyway I hope I'll not be held responsible if your phone is gonna explode, mine didn't!
Good luck!

Hi, once again THANKS for this mini tutorial
No worry you will not be responsible if my phone meltdown , i know flashing is always a little risky, but if something goes wrong most of the time only need to rooting again e flash it. (little chance of burning literally the phone, only if doing insane overclocks), beside i try the "locked bootloade" first so, i think is even easier to restore factor ICS if something bad happens.(hope not) :fingers-crossed:
-when you install the patch, you don't clean cache or something? just install?
-about the hifi modules, i should install it or only if my wifi not work?
in my work days i don't have time to do this procedure but in weakend i want apply this. Really lov the stock ICS look, not that changed version of sony (i mean, is pretty, but don't like)
Thanks for all the help.
I didnt wipe cache or dalvik when I applied the patch... Wifi modules are linked with the kernel you choose, so if you dont flash them, wifi won't work...so "yes" is the answer in any case! let me know if everything works out!

You should when flashing any new ROM because it rules out any issues that might a rise after installing.

Not needed, but there is a baseband for CM9 which is in the thread, up to you if you want to use it or not.
Questions go to Q&A.
Also most of your questions would be answered, had you taken the time to read through the forums and search.

Hi, o.k e see.
i tell you if everything works and my opinion about the room .
by the way, im thinking in root the phone before doing the rooming just to test something, remove bloatware on xperia. My friend speak about this http://www.unlockroot.com/, do you know if its work? because as far as i know we need to downgrade the ics 4.0.4 to 4.0.3 to apply the rooting.
have a nice day , and thanks for your fast reply to all my doubts

humm, i see, thanks for the clarification
can i ask you something subjective?
if i root the xperia ics stock room, and clean all bloatware, really i need a new room? i mean. it will be more stable? or what i will benefit from it?
Thanks, best regards

Thanks for the orientation. I am new in this forums and really don't know yet how this works, beside, i search a lot for questions and i found some really interesting answers but the problem is, i have some specific questions and the threats about "Arc S" are overwhelming, (so much suggestions, feedback's, new versions, errors etc) i cant focus in my thinking line, and get more and more confused :/.
Next time ill make a threat if is really necessary o.k? .
I need to thanks all the members in this one, for the quickly answers and clarifications.

You'll have more system space, probably your phone will be smoother and stable.
Anyway, IMHO:
-change kernel if you're looking for performance improvement, overclocking/undervolting or some particular feature
-change rom if you find some features you'd like/need that are not inside the stock one or if you want to customize it.

Hi,
Thanks for your feedback
I first ill try rooting and after that maybe a new room, but i confess, i am a Little scarred, don't want to brick my phone .
Speaking in root, do you have some thoughs about this? http://www.unlockroot.com/, to rooting the phone? (i am in ICS 4.0.4 - 4.1.B.0.431)
(this weakend i have played with the phone, photos, system, etc,, and this is a great phone for a single core, really fast, my fried have a galaxy S3 and the diference is not so much and the price is more them 2x more)
take care, and thanks for all the help and feedbacks.

I would appreciate some guidance as to what rom to install.
This UK version of the phone had become increasingly slow. I have just rooted it but do not know what to do next.
I had intended to install a custom rom and see it rejuvinated, especially for things like Sat Nav. I also want to get rid of some of the Samsung software that is taking up memory space and slowing the phone down. She I try to update the software to KitKat before installing a custom rom?

You could try this ROM, works great for me:
http://xda.mister-freeze.eu/XDA-files/ace2nutzer/CM11/codina/
Instructions that could help could be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2159250
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56321125&postcount=3
Alternatively, install custom kernels to improve experience:

I find the 101 pages to the help topic overwhelming, especially as it is solidly highly technical. Do you happen to know of a step by step set of instructions that I can follow with ease.
Sorry but some basic points I need clarifying:
You referred me to a rom that works great for you and yet suggest that a custom kernel will improve performance. How do I decide which one to go for? At heart I do not understand the difference between the two.
I had a look at the codina link and notice I need to know what file system is being run on my Ace 2. I tried gparted on my desktop and it did not pickup the android phone as a drive. How do I work out what drive format is being used?

Some searching in those threads couldn't hurt you. It's just one search box away.

- From recovery install temp. cwm.6028 (http://d-h.st/oZD)
- wipe data
- mounts and storages
- format system
- then CM 11 from 18/11 ext4 (link before)
- power off
- boot in cwm
- flash pico uni-gapps (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2397942)
- flash latest ext4 kernel (optional)
- reboot system

I use both. So, in my case, I install the ROM first, and then I install the kernel (instructions above). Note that the kernel part is optional, but should give you better experience.

You could check this by using adb. But if you never did anything before, than it is most likely to be ext4 (default for our Ace2).
Thank you for your help. I have just gone to get the temp. cwm.6028 (http://d-h.st/oZD) and it keeps failing to download. Is the link working? Do you have another one?
I notice that there are two download buttons. The plain download button causes a warning that I am going to a web forgery. The download now button fails to download for me.

For some reason (newest) FireFox downloads it but deletes it right away... This file is save! Use another browser (Chrome for instance) to download... De-activate Download Manager and use Download Now button... Not the other one...
I downloaded it using Flareget and sent it to my desktop and that worked as a download. The downloaded file is called update.zip. Your reply in the last message suggested to me that it should be called "temp. cwm.6028" (http://d-h.st/oZD). I ask in case someone has substituted another file!

Dude.. you are really complicated! This update.zip is the Temp. CWM Recovery...
For sure the are some update.zip around the net which containing other stuff - But this (http://d-h.st/oZD) is the Temp. CWM Recovery.
And it's a save file (as I alrady wrote) - I looks right now that FF and Chrome dont want to download it...
I think some dump users reported this file to often! Only because they don't konw how to download corretly from Dev Host...
I hope this is clear now....

Device dead and reboot

Hey guys, first i come from VN and my English is not good. Hope everyone can understand.
My device sometimes stop working then auto reboot. The screen auto off and about 3-4 second the led turn red color and the screen turn on then screen blur little with some blur stripe and it auto boot. It's make me scare :"( do you have same problem and what can we do to stop it?
My device still work ok but sometimes this happen.
Thanks.
Try factory reset, otherwise you need to send the device for repair. I do not have any issue with my Z5 the only issue I had was when my MicroSD card stop working (could not write to it could only read) and my device rebooted and slowed down. I replaced my MicroSD card and everything is great since then.

I'm 99% sure the reason is that you install custom firmware and xposed module, but mess something up... as a result you get a lot of garbage in System UI and Launcher UI settings.
The common reason of reboots is lag in framework which controlls OVERHEATING...device think that CPU temp is critical and reboots.
So if you are scared about this, my advice is to install clean STOCK firmware,
p.s. but installing of xposed module is fixed already and you can find very detailed guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/workaround-bootloops-xposed-lollipop-t3089203
and the part of it you need is

Anybody who is still having any kind of issues, for whatever reason, please do the following:
get into TWRP;
install, in this order, without rebooting:
xposed-uninstall-v1.1.zip
If you don't have an sd card, you'll need to reboot once after the uninstall .zip, boot the system normally, then get back in the recovery and install the other 3. This only applies to people who don't use an SD card
xzdr-busybox-enable-v1.0.zip
xposed-sdk21-arm-date.zip
xposed-leakplug-v1.2.zip
copy the logs to the PC, over USB:
uninstall_xposed.log
install_busybox.log
install_leakplug.log
each of the 3 zip's will tell you where it saved the log (it's usually the external sdcard)
reboot to system
Thanks in advance for not asking any questions about whether you have to do any of these steps; yes, you have to.
Easy
Cheers
