[Q] To Update or Not To Update, ... - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello to all that read this,
Short:
I've been experiencing intermittent sluggishness, should I update OTA or swap device? I want to be able to jump right into root when available.
Long:
I've been experiencing annoyingly slow behavior from my baby (Note 4).
I am coming form a GS3, so I just assumed the blazing speed of this new phone, would keep me happy for at least the next 2 years.
Ex: When I press the RecentApp button, the device chugs for about 1.5+ secs. (It shouldn't be long enough to count "One-Mississippi"-style.)
When I am switching between apps, I've noticed this same chug.
I DO use Power Saver mode but currently that's on and I had a 2 sec lag, with only 3 apps open(Settings, AppDeals, Ridiculous Fishing)
Thanks for any help, in advanced!

You already know the answer, if you take an update there's a chance root will not work for you. Hell we may never get root for that matter. It's a case of damned if you do damned if you don't.
Decide and go forth my child
on a side note I changed my launcher, going with nova launcher, there's no lag especially with the recent apps Button etc might want to try that before you make a decision

I'm guessing he's talking about any hypothetical updates. Lollipop, whenever it hits will likely be the next update.
The developers are working on a crack for the firmware as it exists today. Any update will prolong the chances of getting root, perhaps fatally.

Yeah, that's what I feared thanks.

You can go into Developer Options and change the following options to .5 seconds or off that might speed things up a little:
Window Animation Scale
Transition Animation Scale
Animator Duration Scale

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"

I would do the following:
1) Factory reset and only put needed apps before loading up just for testing
2) apply these tweaks http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/general/speed-note-4-root-t2922169
3) Still have issue swap out phone.

stock rom (icl53f), without root.
i bought the phone 3 days ago and it was ok till the last night :-/ maybe a conflict with some apps?
Sorry for posting in Galaxy Nexus Themes and Apps :/
It probably is an app that's doing it as a stock unrooted phone shouldn't have issues like that.

It may not fix it but at the vet least you should boot into recovery and:
Wipe dalvik
Fix permissions
...and then reboot. If it is still there after that then you know you have bigger problems.

This happens to me on aokp sometimes as well....I'll unlock the phone and I'll get a black screen with just my recent apps button showing and the only way I can do anything is pressing the apps button and going to a recent app and then the rest of my buttons will show up....I'll take a screenshot next time and post it here

I can't take a screenshot.....the power button won't work...interesting thing is if I leave it alone, nova launcher force closes..weird

Mangled text on home screens?

Hello, I've got a weird error that I don't even know how to begin tracking down. Not sure if this is an ICS issue, an app issue, or a device (hardware) issue.
Several times now, I get a problem were, after a reboot, all the text on my home screen - names for apps and text within widgets is mangled somehow. Like pixels inverted, or boxed over, etc. (see screenshot)

The first couple of times this happened, a single reboot made it go away. However with my latest occurrence, I've rebooted several times without a fix.
EDIT: It seems like my data connection may also require examination? Since on the 3rd or 4th reboot I was in my office with a solid WiFi connection (versus previous reboots I was in my car en-route), the problem has now gone away again.
My initial reboot this morning was as a quick-fix attempt at an absent data connection. Guess I'm off to research these "radios" everyone keeps on about...
EDIT 2: Ok, perhaps ignore the above. After a reboot made this go away, it has now come back spontaneously (i.e. just noticed it sitting in the cradle with the error again - no reboot this time.) CRUUUUD.
Are you using a custom Kernel? Some 'Overclock' the GPU to 512MHz, while Stock is 384MHz. Some devices can't handle the increase and cause screen artifacts. Post your Kernel details and I'm sure someone will point you in the direction of another Kernel if this is the case.
Not that I know of - should be all stock, since I haven't rooted or unlocked anything yet (just got the phone a couple of weeks ago).
Thanks for the help.
Stock launcher? Or using nova/apex etc?

Hi,
Another thread...:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646985
Nothing related to GPU overclock...just about this possibility...
Looking in different threads in Q&A/General.
If you are using the stock launcher...I think I saw a topic with this weird issue with the stock launcher...but I can not find it anymore
In any case clear data/cache of your current launcher, reboot and see...If you're on another launcher than stock,reinstall...
I speak only for the launcher issue.
Yep, stock launcher. Thanks for the other thread.
Seems to be at bay now. Will keep an eye on it.

Reboot S4 weekly?

We need to reboot our Galaxy S4 at least weekly because... there are memory and resource leaks??

It doesn't hurt to reboot your phone once in a while. I would be annoyed at that message however.

Yeah a reboot will just clear things out that aren't behaving properly that might be causing minor wakelocks or something. A Linux OS won't degrade in performance just from being on like Windows will but that doesn't mean that indivual apps or settings won't start to misbehave after a while.
If you experience no issues or problems with performance there is no real need to reboot.
I'm sure T Mobile puts that message in there just to encourage rebooting as it will fix 75% of problems, thus reducing the number of people who call customer service and use up their resources with really simple problems.
I turn off/on (not just reboot) my phone about once a week. Keeping a device powered on 24/7 for months/years can't be good (I have no data to support that).

Actually one of the reasons alot of industrial servers run linux/unix operating environments is specifically because you CAN run them for months at a time without needing to reboot. The OS will not degrade like Windows does so it makes for an ideal server platform since those need to run 24/7.
The only real limitation is the hardware. As long as it is properly cooled (hence the reason the server room at your office has its own air conditioner) it should be able to run indefinitely.
Linux is pretty amazing stuff.

My Linux box at work has been running for over a year without the need for a reboot.
And here's my Nexus 7 on Android 4.1 with over 2450 hours of system uptime:
Who needs to reboot, right?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I believe that's just T-Mobile making up excuses. If your device is properly set up with the right kernel (stock kernel sucks) then you never need to reboot. However, clearing your recent tasks (long pressing home) will greatly help.
Btw windows never needs to be rebooted I've been running my windows 7 laptop and never need to reboot. Only time it reboots is when I forget to cancel the auto update.
Windows rocks too ^-^

Anyone get weird graphical glitches in Gmail app?

Attached a screenshot. This has been happening for a couple months now, maybe a bit longer.
I don't think it's a hardware issue as it really only happens in the Gmail app. Also, not sure it would be captured via screenshot if it was some kind of loose connection.
Doesn't happen anywhere else that I can think of off hand. Lasts for about a second then clears up on its own.
It has persisted over a couple builds at least. Some from clean installs as well. I root the phone straight away, so next time I'll try stock for a bit to rule any of that out.
Hoping it's not just me.

Yep, same bug here and only with Gmail app http://imgur.com/rjAZE9J
Yep, I'm getting the same
Those occur for me as well, that's why inbox is my choice of app
I was getting to. I sideloaded the march ota yesterday (that has the performance fixes) and it is no longer occuring. Not sure if the two are related, but that is the only change thing that has changed for me. Was definitely annoying..
Had the same on 6.0.1, moved to android N and t desapired

unfortunately only with Android N the problem goes away, with MHC19J is still present
Glad I'm not the only one and my device isn't defective. It's a minor annoyance knowing that now.
Happening to me as well, on stock. Haven't gotten the March ota yet.

Weird. Definitely gone for me after applying the March ota. Did you wipe the cache partition after applying the update? I always do after any update.

flash-all.bat every Factory Image.
If you have not yet seen the glitching on the MHC19J, not try to reproduce it with open/close Gmail, closing all recent apps and re-open Gmail... because you could have a nasty surprise

Question Poco F3 Overheating

I have had my device for 8 months without issues. Just 5 days ago it started overheating out of nowhere. Temperature can rise from 31 to 47°C between just a minute when I'm on a call. This comes with a huge battery drain during these spikes. Similar thing happens when I'm downloading or doing any network intensive activity. I used to get 7-8hrs SOT now I can barely get 3hrs.
When I switch to Wifi I don't experience this temperature spike and battery drain when I'm downloading stuff.
The heat is at topmost part, around the camera areas.
I have full LTE connectivity
Any help?
I'm on stock and I don't have any apps apart those downloaded from the playstore.
That means you can't help in any way.
Thanks
Never heard of this before. Try setting network mode to lte only. Go to dialpad and enter *#*#4636#*#*. Select phone information 1. Then under "set preferred network type" select lte only. Hope this solves it.
You can also change the sim to slot 2 and see if the issue persists.

I've done exactly that but still. The attached image shows the power draw when making a call.
I think it's a problem with the modem although I'm not sure. WiFi connection however is totally different, it doesn't spike up temps and battery drainage.
I have the exactly same problem.
What do you think might be the problem?
i have same issue
U have few options
1.root ur phone to a different os other than miui.
2.buy a phone fan cooler.
3.buy and expensive phone like Samsung s22ultra or the likes that have no overheating complains .
4. Wait for 5 years because a specific company is making ssd cooling technology and will implement that in phones in the near future . Then buy these phones.
Frustrated android user indeed .
Thanks for your suggestions
i found out that gallery is making these battery dragining and overheating problems.
SOLUTION: FORCE STOP gallery if your are non rooted user like me and use google photos instead.
BTW: they didnt fixed it with miui 14
I got my F3 ten months, and never experienced this issue.
I would suggest trying the following steps.
1: Go to Developer options.
2: Scroll down to Apps heading
3: Check background Process Limit. By default Standard will be selected.
4: Change it to either Atmost 1 Process at a time OR 2 process at a time.
I cant guarantee that the steps above will solve your problem but it fixed mine.
Try it and let us know if that helped.
