[Q] Transfer files N7->PC problems - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hello
Last day I wanted to make a full backup of the external storage of my Nexus 7 2013 WiFi only but, after I selected the folders, copied them and pasted in a folder on my PC, the copy doesn't begin. The light green bar on the window keep going left and right and it's written:"Calculation of the time required for copying the files". Or it copies only few files inside and stop...
Also when I click on properties of a folder like Titanium Backup's one it says 0KB but, after I enter into it, wait few time, exit and re-click on properties it appears 1.27GB.
Another thing:
The size of
Computer\Nexus 7\Memoria interna\TitaniumBackup
and
Computer\Nexus 7\Memoria interna\storage\emulated\legacy\TitaniumBackup
doesn't match... Same elements number but there is a difference of 300MB... What is the correct one?
Now the only way I can make a backup is via Airdroid...
Can someone help me?

Could be something with your PC. What operating system are you using? Also when you go into Titanium, have you ever gone into problems ---> preferences and changed where you want your Titanium backup made to? Titanium defaults to Computer\Nexus 7\Memoria interna\storage\emulated\legacy\TitaniumBackup.

You could also simply try rebooting your computer and see if that helps. I'd also double check your drivers.

Windows 7 professional but it has problems also with ubuntu 14.10 live. I had never problems with Titanium...
Today with airdroid I made a backup in few times... But now I have the files so would it be better to reinstall android?

I have Windows 7 and had problems with that before too. Funny thing is Windows 8 works OK. Never had any problems with Ubuntu though. If you tried unplugging your tablet and then rebooting and that didn't help you could either try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers or use airdroid. I've had the same with titanium though. I can transfer other files but not a titanium backup. It could also be the permissions on your titanium file. I haven't looked, but if you go in with a root explorer is the titanium backup file set to read only. If so you could try changing the permissions so they're more permissive and try the transfer again <---- my ideas

Thanks for the reply.
I re-installed the firmware and tried to copy files. There weren't problems to transfer them on sdcard. Now that I want to put Android 5 same problem but also with Android folder and Mangawatcher one... So I think it's another issue...
Now I transfer Android folder using root explorer and a NTFS hdd mounted with stickmount and it's going... When it will end I'll try on Mangawatcher and Titanium Backup ones...
I think it's because of files number inside of the folders... All theese three folders have so many files (ok Titanium Backup has only 400-500 files) but not like videos and music.

I had a problem backing up my TB folder to my Windows 7 PC.
You probably just need to switch your tablet off and then boot up again. Worked for me (and many others).

[Q] Titanium Backup on the Galaxy Nexus

How is everyone dealing with application backups on Titanium? specifically backing up TB files off the SGN
how are you pulling the TB backup files OFF the SGN other then using dropbox? when i connect via MTP, the TB backup files do not show up in windows explorer
thanks,
I just drag and dropped them into /TitaniumBackup/ on the root of MTP and it worked.
If it doesn't work, try making a new folder in the root of MTP.
Go into that new folder and copy paste /TitaniumBackup/ into /New Folder/ then after thats done move /TitaniumBackup/ back into the root folder.

restoring onto the nexus is easy because i can do like you said and it works great but what about backing up from your nexus to the PC. the files do not show up in MTP to copy to the PC.

yes, it works great but how do you go about moving the newly backed up tb files off the sgn to the pc for safe keeping?
Try sharing a folder on your Windows Machine and using AndSMB Linda File Manager or eXplorer which will allow you to map to that shared drive from your Android Phone over the network. You can then just copy the files directly over your wireless connection.
cant you just copy and paste the folder onto your PC? thats all i do, the storage acts the same as an sdcard on windows 7
Switch to camera mode for large transfers, then switch back.
I flashed a new ROM today and then tried to restore my Titanium back. The ROM is rooted. Titanium went through the steps of restoring, but I coukd see none of the apps in the drawer and I had to reinstall from the Market one by one.
Did this happen to anybody?
EDIT: Silly of me, was using an old version which probably doesn't like ICS. The latest version works fine .
TB current doesnt work on my GN... it freeze on batch restore.
Is it possible to back up apps and settings on to an external flash drive using Titanium Backup if you have a USB host cable and the StickMount app?

Same here.
It looks like the JNI call that Titanium Backup is using to restore the backups is causing a null pointer exception. So far I haven't been lucky googling for an answer.

I'm on verizon stock 4.0.2, rooted.
I have unknown sources ticked (just in case).
It works when I choose the classic method under debugging options, I found out.
I used it yesterday with no issues on my GSN. Used batch back up, installed Android Revolution HD 2.1.2 and restored all apps etc. Worked as expected.
I'm having the same problem as OP stigmax and it doesnt seem like his (my) question got answered.
I used TB and it worked great. Now I want to take the backup files off my SGN and onto my laptop in case something terrible happens to the phone.
The /TitaniumBackup/ folder shows up in MTP and PTP, but both times the folder is empty.
Where did my backups go??
They show up fine on my PC...

Hmm. I've read that TB hasnt been fully optimized for ICS so maybe I'll just chalk it up to that and hope I can still restore if I need to.

How can I backup the whole "sdcard" to my PC?

I cannot copy files from the sdcard to my PC as it simply hangs on "Calculating the time required to copy the files."
I have tried different USB ports, uninstalled and re-installed the drivers, tried usb debugging on and off. This is driving me nuts!
I have tried airdroid and syncme, but airdroid is just too slow (24 hours approx) and syncme drops the connection too often.
Can anyone tell me how to backup all the sdcard files from the Galaxy Nexus to the PC?
Thank you.
i use wifi transfer pro, wifi file explorer.

i use wifi file transfer pro, wifi file explorer, pocket cloud explore.
Code:
adb pull /data/media/ /Sdcard/
This will back up to a "Sdcard" folder on your C:\ drive.

Ummmm. Try not to do all 32 GB at once? I have no problems backing up mine. I do it by pics. Then downloads. Then titanium backup etc. Just do one file at a time

I am the developer of SyncMe Wireless app you tried. I do regular 8 GB sd card backups. It takes approximately 3 hours for the very first backup and a few minutes for subsequent backups. Considering you left device in the same place and set your device WiFi policy correctly - never sleeps, best WiFi performance, you should not experience any connection drop. Otherwise, it is just like fighting the device which wants to save battery on WiFi use. By the way, using USB is always at least 10 times faster. So if you can setup USB tethering between your device and PC, you can backup in less than half an hour 8 GB sd card for the first time and the same few minutes subsequent incremental ones. Doing the same using adb takes almost 20 minutes more and no incremental backup thereafter.

Thanks! You put me on the right track. The command you gave me only pulled media (photos, videos, music).
So, I thought about it for a second, and logically it followed that
Code:
adb pull /sdcard/ /sdcard/
would pull the entire Internal storage. It did.
I am now backed up! Thanks again!

Just worked like charm! I only had to change the source directory to /storage instead of /data/media,that's where my Xperia Tipo is locating the sdcard.
I think this can backup anything, like /apps for example..

This worked like a charm for me. I have an HTC One, so backing up isn't as easy as it was when I had removable storage. My question is this; can I push directories back to the 'sdcard' the same way I did a 'pull' the entire sdcard? I.E., can I 'restore' this backup if I do a full wipe (including the internal sdcard)?
I should have posted this a long time ago, but anyone still having issues backing up to your PC should download Android Commander.

Unable to transfer to pc

Basically when I try to copy things from the SD card while using the phone in MTP, it only copys an empty folder. Files wont move at all. Is there some kind of lock? Using windows 7 and I have AOKP rom. Samsung driver is installed from: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SGH-I747MBBATT
Lock? No. It's always finicky for me. Is it just large files, or all files?
Its all files. Also I lost my titanium backup because it turned the folder into a "file" and I couldnt change it back and deleted it before even thinking about it.
I don't know why it happened. Maybe you should learn to use adb
Edit:
Try using the 1.4.6 drivers, instead of the latest ones. They are the same ones used for the og Note, originally. Also the ones used on the S3 when it first came out. If you click on the captivate sig link in my sig, there's a link to the I717 drivers.

+1 for adb.
usb is very finicky. when copying entire folders, as you said, often the folder will transfer quickly. this will be a sure sign that no data was exchanged. sure enough, the pasted folder will be empty. oddly enough, if you drag the files within the folder one-by-one to the destination device, they will transfer. just a pain, especially if there are many files within the folder.
I know how to adb but I shouldnt need to just to transfer files.

I did but I was just saying, why should I have to use adb for something that should be as simple as drag/drop? I can't seem to find it though. I don't see previous version on the samsung site. Will it work if I just use the note driver?
edit:
Ok it is working now on the current normal driver. For some reason it was just happening hard before. Now its acting fine.
On another note, sometimes it says the HWID is invalid or something?
Yeah, that happens. Just reboot the computer and phone, seems to fix it for awhile.
Well as I read its the MTP thing that causes this? I like how it works because it doesn't stop me from using the phone while its transfering to my PC.
Anywho, thanks for the help and info.

[Q] can't see titanium folder on PC via USB MTP

I've got a rooted stock (Jassy v5 kernel) N7 2013 and have done a titanium backup.
I'm trying to copy it to my PC and when I connect in MTP mode (developer options unchecked) the Titanium folder doesn't appear, it comes up as a 0b size file.
Titanium itself works and I can see the folder on the nexus itself (via es explorer etc.)
Is this some kind of new permissions issue? Never had this before have always been able to see my titanium folder via USB....
I tried for awhile to get it to show up on my PC but I couldn't get Windows 7 to see that directory. I ended up enabling Google Drive backup in Titanium. Then I created a backup from Google Drive on my PC.
cheers might try your workaround
would much rather have local USB though (speed, data caps etc.)
Sometimes mtp on windows gets confused and doesn't display everything
Try reboot PC and tablet and try again
I had the same exact issue. I was able to see most directories, but TitaniumBackup was missing. I ended up using AirDroid to perform a wireless transfer of the backup files to my PC. Also using Win7/MTP. Hope this helps.
iirc you have to look for a folder named /sdcard/sdcard or /sdcard/0/
There's a titanium backup folder in there, the one in /sdcard/TiB doesnt seem to hold anything. Either way its a 4.3/TiB issue.

Help with endless nested /0/0/0/0 folders

Hi. I just switched from 1 custom 4.3 rom to a different one and i did a factory reset. However once i rebooted, i noticed that all my internal SD content had gone into 0/0/0/0 etc. i kept clicking but eventually file explorer on widows just froze.
I went into ES file explorer on my phone and saw the content was behind 400 0's!!!!
Anyone have any idea what i could do to recover that info? every time i try copying the files ES explorer either crashes or says that it had copied the files when it hadnt.
Any help would be greatly apreciated. I'm at my wits end... :crying:
Thanks
Bro you need to use a file explorer from recovery. TWRP custom recovery has a built-in file explorer. That should do the trick

Also, you should update your recovery as the more recent versions have fixed that problem. It doesn't happen each time you flash with the new versions.

On Windoz, You could troll and copy out every 10 deep or 20 deep back to surface and then continue. That'd be better than crashing Explorer.
Dos Prompt is more rugged. You could write a batch script there.

I saw that somewhere and tried that. Doesnt seem to be having any effect. Unless im doing it wrong...
I'm plugging my phone into my computer, accessing the phone section when it comes up, going about 20 0s deep and copying it back to the root. It either crashes my windows explorer, or doesnt seem to be doing anything(i think because its already disconnected itself. i tried making a new folder and it wouldn't let). what am i doing wrong?
PS. how would i access my phones internal SD from DOS?
thanks
Try ADB FileExplorer that should not time out on Windows. I have also tried Android File Manager with success. If that does not work, I will look up other options.
Well i tried android file manager. Im not 100% sure exactly how these programs work, but either way its saying i dont have root access. I do and i also have chainfires adbd insecure app which should give me full root access, but its still not working.
I looked at ADB FileExplorer too, but i didnt really get it and it kept saying it couldnt find my phone and something about an incorrect path.
With the Android File Manager, when it accesses the Phone over ADB, it will ask for Root once. If you don't click SuperSU warning in that time, the File Manager will give this error. Please read its thread carefully. I have connected over ADBWIRELESS and this just fine.

It never asked for root on my phone. I've tried all the changes and everything else that people have recommended, but im still not having any luck. I guess im too much of a noob for all this lol :crying:
Try Re-mounting internal SD in Recovery and then connect to PC.
nope, still no luck. Its still saying no root and no supersu request is coming up. I guess im missing something....
EDIT: I seem to somehow be "losing" root every time i try to connect to the android file manager. i open an app that requires root and it says i dont have root. I have to reboot my phone to get root to work again. It's weird though, because SuperSU opens fine...
open the last "zero" folder on your computer, drag everything into a folder on your computer desktop, let everything copy (do something else in the mean time), delete your phone memory, copy everything back to your cleared phone memory card

If only it was that easy. its behind 400 nested folders. Windows cant go that deep. it freezes and FC's after about 200.
Im giving my phone in to get my power button repaired, so i guess ill ask the software tech there if he can figure it out. But thank you Perseus for all your help last night. :good:
