[Q] Cannot write to SD from PC! - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I just got my S 10.5 tablet and loving it so far.
One thing though, I cannot seem to write to my Micro SD card (Samsung 32 GB).
I see it on the table and can format it, browse it.
When I connect to my PC, I see the tablet, as a media device that opens to two drives which are browsable but anytime I just try to create a directory, it hangs...
The behavior is same if I switch to Camera mode.
I tried retrieving and installing USB drivers from Samsung site but changed nothing...
I'm getting desperate... My only option is to remove the SD card, mount it on my phone, transfer my files then back on the tab.... ouch...
Thanks

Problems with SD card

First, I think there should be an option when plug a USB from computer to have a 'Charge Only' mode, like HTC phones. Most of the time when I plug a USB in I just want to charge, not transfer files.
But the real problem is it always defaults USB mass storage - and everytime it does that my phone cannot read SD Card until I select some other option like MTP. However once I have de-selected it from USB mass storage, there are still problems of my phone reading the SD Card, it could one of the following:
1) the SD card is not detected at all, even in Files or ES File Explorer etc. Another indicator is in Settings-Storage it doesn't show an SD Card is detected
2) the SD card is detected it but takes a long time, maybe 5 mins or so for it to index all my files - as shown in the fact that it takes approx 5 mins for my images to show in Gallery, and 5 mins or so for all my music to show in JetAudio
My SD card is fairly large at 32GB but I'm not having problems on my other phones

[APP] USB Mass Storage for Samsung Galaxy SIII Mini

Hi everyone!
I was looking around for an app that could share my SD card with a computer via USB Mass Storage protocol, but no success. There were apps for other phones, but they didn't work for my phone :/ So I've created something for my own, and I hope it will work for your phones too. My app works only for external SD card.
REQUIREMENTS
* Rooted Samsung Galaxy SIII Mini (GT-i8190). This app may work for other devices too, but I can not guarantee that.
I have tested it against:
* Android 4.1.2, firmware JZO54K.I8190XXAMD3
* Windows XP SP3
* Windows 7 64-bit
Not working on:
* CM 10.1
KNOWN ISSUES
* USB PC Connection will still display MTP/PTP mode, even if the mode is Mass Storage. I could fix that issue, but this will require permanent configuration changes, which I would like to avoid.
* Other USB modes (especially ADB) are disabled during UMS mode. This can not be overcome.
USAGE
* Launch the application, click Enable UMS. This will unmount your external SD card from the device, and when the card is unmounted, app will switch USB mode. You should see two new drives appearing in My Computer window. On the second one, your SD card data should appear.
* When you are done, eject (unmount) the drive in Windows.
* Click Disable UMS. This will switch USB to the state it was before enabling UMS, so MTP/PTP mode, as well as ADB will be back. Then, your SD card will be mounted in the phone. An MTP Application prompt may appear, asking to restart MPT application. You may answer what you wish
IMPORTANT NOTES
* Never mount SD card in the phone (Settings->Storage->Mount SD card) while it is shared with a computer. This will cause the card filesystem to be mounted concurrently by two operating systems, and for sure cause data lost.
* Always eject (unmount) the card from a computer before disabling UMS.
* It seems that results (especially glitches and hangs) vary depending on the SD card you are using. See this post by myself.
HELP, THERE'S SOMETHING WENT WRONG
* You may restart your phone. The app does not make any permanent configuration changes, so it's the safest option.
* Restart your computer.
* Unplug and replug USB cable.
* You may try to disable USB, wait for several seconds, then either enable it again, or from the system USB PC connection app, change the mode to PTP, and back to MTP. Be patient, and wait before performing next operation.
* Be patient. From time to time, the computer takes a lot of time to detect device going back from UMS to MTP/ADB.
* App not working. Describe the symptoms (app crash, phone crash, computer crash, nothing changes, etc), your device details (operating system version and build) and attach logcat (adb logcat -d -v long > filename.txt) logs.
P.S.
I would kindly ask moderators to move this thread to the appropriate subforum, if it is already not. Since I'm newbie, I can not post to Developer's forum. Thanks

Do you copy from the SD card, or to the SD card?
If you copy from, have you tried opening some files directly from the SD card? Do they open?
If you copy to the SD card, did you unmount it in Windows before disabling UMS?
I have just tried copying in both directions, and files do copy properly.
Hi f_ranek
App is working well, but hungs PC copying from PC to SD and vice versa with files more than 690 Mb, hope you could fix it, it will be very usefull, well known advantages from ums mode.
Thanks for your job.

Actually, there seem to be some timeout issues. For instance, first I tried copying big files, and it seemed that everything hung, with strange Windows messages. So I disconnected USB cable, disabled and reenabled USM mode, and replugged USB. Then, I copied 40 MB to my SD card, but before the copying starts, I had to wait for a quite long time (about 30-60 seconds). But, surprisingly, after copying that 40 MB file, I have copied 80 MB file, 200 MB file and 700 MB file without any troubles and additional waiting! And they play well on the device. For your record: I was using Win XP SP3, and Total Commander 6.53. Tomorrow I'll try on Win7 64bit.
I'll try to tune a little the configuration, but have no idea if this will change something.

First of all, you are using quite unsupported by operating system. CM is Android, but is very different from the stock one, that device manufacturers put on their devices. Now, I have no plans for supporting CM - maybe find an app dedicated for CM, or ask CM developers to put back UMS mode natively, without any hacks. Because yes, UMS is still there, but hidden in UI, and all that UMS apps are doing is just guessing where and how, and hacking your OS.
Second, if you are using CM, it means that you are quite powerfull user. And I hope can read with understanding to install CM. So please read my post, and attach logcat (adb logcat -d -v long > filename.txt) logs. Sorry for my irony, but if you want to get help, you must first make a little effort.

Thank you very much, inadvertently, this application works on 4.1.2 original stock
Hi everybody!
Recently I did some test with Windows 7 64 bit. The tests were performed on fresh system (the phone was plugged for the first time), the phone was plugged directly (no USB Hub down the line), and I've always switched to UMS before plugging the cable.
If you don't want to read such a long post, skip to the emboldened bottom line.
First, I've tested my regular SD card, 2 GBs labeled Kingston. I've copied 1 GB of files from the SD card to the computer, without any trouble and at average speed of 14 MB/s. Then I wanted to delete those files. After selecting them, and hitting Shift-Delete, I got delete progress dialog, which hung up leaving 1 file (out of 6) undeleted. At this point, access to SD card seemed to hung. I was unable to cancel the operation and close the dialog, as well as refreshing of the My Computer window took significant period of time. So I decided to unplug the USB, and replug it again. After that I noticed, that the files I wanted to delete are gone. Then, I copied back 700 MB file to the SD card. The copying avg speed was 3-4 MB/s, and the CPU utilization window (see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1495763) showed big blue bar.
Second, I replaced the SD card with another 2 GBs, labeled Japan. Then I copied 3 files (40 + 80 + 30 MB - no more space available, and no unnecessary files to delete) to the card. The copying was smooth, with little glitches before or after each file copying. The avg speed was 10-12 MB/s, and the device haven't indicate increase CPU load (neither green nor red or blue bars). Then, I tried deleting several files in a row from a directory, still without any glitches.
Edit: testing now, on Win XP, and through USB hub (does it matter?) does not work so perfectly well :/ I got one hang during folders deletion, and quite a long glitch before copying of several folders started.
Third, unlabeled 2 GB card sold (probably) with Nokia 6303i. First, I wanted to browse file system on the device. The performance was really bad, I was only reading files and traversing directories. Suddenly, all the file names changed to random characters (no writes performed by myself), and the phone indicated file system error, and unmounted the card. When I tried to share it with PC, windows said that the card is not formatted. The same phone, when trying to mount it back. The card can't be read neither on Nokia 6300.
Last, but not least - unlabeled 128 MB card got with my Nokia 6300 back in 2008. The phone indicated unformatted card, or unsupported file system. The same with Windows 7 accessing it with UMS, and Windows XP accessing it from the SD card reader. But, the card can be still read by my Nokia 6300, however, it's name is a little crapped. Moreover, I can access it from Windows XP using that Nokia in UMS mode!
So, the bottom line is
everything seems to depend on the SD card you are using.
Another story: the same micro SD card accessed via UMS in Nokia 6300 - very good performance, accessed via SD card reader with micro SD adapter - terribly bad performance. Another SD card accessed via the same SD card reader - very good performance. So as you can see, the same SD card, different reading devices - different effect. The same reading device, different cards - different effect.

[Q] SD CARD-'File Not Found' errors

Hi all,
Just a quick question. I have the tab s 10.5 t800 non rooted (at this stage). I am having trouble with the sd card. The problem is that when I transfer some files to my tablet from my PC when I go to access them sometimes it comes up with 'file not found'. This seems to happen a lot when I transfer comics across from my computer to the tablet. Initially they are there and I can access them but then when I got to access them later its telling me the file isn't found.
Is this because I'm not rooted? I have read that kitkat doesn't like writing to external sd card but this is from computer to tablet so I thought would be okay.
Any advice greatly appreciated
Cheers

The Tab S seems to be incredibly picky as to which SD cards play nice and which do not, even across the same brand/model of card.
Try a different card.
I've detailed my own SD issues in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/help/galaxy-tab-s-deleted-sd-card-files-t2971447
thanks mate Ill check it out. Appreciate your reply
I typically swap cards from an old device to a newer one... phone, tablet, etc. This time, I took the Sandisk 64gb card from my Acer A700 and installed it into my 10.5" Tab S and... it read as a blank card. Back into the A700 and it read fine. Checked on my PC and no errors. I finally resolved all issues by transferring all my data to my PC, installing the card into the Tab S, letting the tablet format the card, and then transferring all the files back over USB. Everything's working great now, but geez... seriously?

[Q] Problems using Galaxy Tab S as USB device

I have purchased a week ago a Galaxy Tab S 8.4 (T705M) and I am using a 64 Gb MicroSD in it.
I upgraded to 5.02 (OTA) since June/26.
I have problems with external MicroSD when the tablet is connected via USB to my PC (Windows 7, Home, 64 bits).
Whe trying to copy files from the PC to the tablet external MicroSD, the operation is very, very slow and some files (existing previously in the external MicroSD) disappear. Very annoying.
I had same problem with another Tab S I purchased by January and I returned it to the vendor. In that case, the tablet was on Kit Kat (as it is sold).
Yesterday, after the Tablet erases several directories from the SD, I turned off the tablet and extracted the SD. I tried to fix the SD directly connected to the PC but the SD appears as "read only".
After trying for a while I gave up and I formatted the SD (extFAT) and copy the info from a backup I did before putting the SD in the teeth (fangs?) of the tablet (yeah, I guessed the tablet would be as a wild beast when managing SD's). The "re"formatted microSD behaved as a charm, all info copied without any problem (but it took almost 3 hours copying 50 Gb at about 7 Mb/second).
On the other hand, I used this same SD card in my old Note 8 (Jellybean) for more than a year without problems.
Now, I guess the only way I have is extracting the SD card and edit its content only connecting it directly to a PC.
What can I do to calm down the beast and edit external MicroSD connecting the tablet via USB without losing information and with a reasonable speed ?
Any suggestion ?
Root your device and apply the sd card fix. Also 7mb/s seems about normal for a cheap micro sd card.
I have not had any problems with files disappearing, have you confirmed your 64gb microsd is not a fake.
I have a Samsung 64gb microsd, and i got around 9MB/s copying a movie from my notebook to my T800 10.5"
John.
Thanks for the comments.
My card is Verbatim Class 10 and it worked perfectly in my old Note 8. It works really as stated for a class 10 SD (10 MB/s at peaks as stated in https://www.sdcard.org/developers/overview/speed_class/) but, as with any device, speed depends on several factors (file sizes, buffer in the source PC, etc) and the average obtained is really about 7 MB/s or so.
I guess the problem is related with something in Lollipop (but Tinderbox says has no problems) or, more probable, driver in the PC.
Tinderbox, are you using Kies to transfer ? are you transferring from a PC or a Mac ? which class is your SD ? have you enabled "USB debugging" ?
I purchased an 8 GB SD in order to make some tests. This SD is Class 4 and formatted FAT32 but anyway I will test it to learn about this riddle....
In the mean time, any suggestions are welcome and I repeat, thanks for the answers.
UPDATE:
Sandisk SD (8 GB, FAT32) worked perfectly, no erases, good speed (Class 4, speed tablet connected via USB about 4 MB/s).
Next test planned: reformat Verbatim 64 GB using FAT32.
I am on kitkat 4.4.2 and i dont use kies, I just drag and drop my files from my notebook to the tablet, I did not need to enable usb debugging, my 64gb is full of video, I copy them virtually every day and have had not problems.
I think i read about another 8.4" owner having problems with his microsd card i will have a look for it.
I have only ever bought Samsung memory cards for years and i have never had a problem.
Have you tried re-installing the device driver, you can do it from the kies menu.

Thanks for your complete answer(s).
I have made several (a lot) of tests without any success. In all cases SD can not be written from a PC (when connected via USB) and erasing files using android app sometimes cause corruption.
The card is completely readable (a little laggy to begin to work after it was unmounted and reinserted). The card works without errors when connected directly to the PC.
These are the some tests I have made (reformatting and restoring the files between one test and the next, a real nightmare ):
1. Uninstalling Kies
2. Reinstalling Kies (and refreshing driver)
3. Uninstalling Kies and Samsung driver. Uninstalling USB driver and erasing it completely and let windows select the driver
4. Formatting the card in FAT32 via some software
5. Trying to format the card via command in windows (from the console). It takes about one hour and abort near the end with an error messages explaining that windows can not format FAT32 for this capacity
6. Even trying to partition the SD via DISKPART. I can create one primary partition (32000 MB) but DISKPART shows all disk allocated and do not allow to create another partition (either primary or extended)
Last symptom: I erased one file from the root directory of the SD using "My files" (the app preinstalled in the firmware by Samsung). The file disappear but My files shows a ghost file named with special characters.
When the SD is consulted via Root Explorer (an android file manager) or even connected directly to the PC, the ghost file did not show.
@tinderbox: could you remember who (or where do you read about) the other " 8.4" owner having problems with his microsd card " ?
Some body could suggest solution ?
Thanks for any help or guide.
Hi.
You did format the micosd card using the tablet, you cannot format on an computer and then use it in your tablet, the tablet uses it own file system, so you have to format the microsd using the tablet.
John.
Format the card to exFat in windows. It only takes a few seconds to format my Samsung Evo 64gb.
If it doesn't work then your card likely has issues.
Finally success
Thanks for your suggestions.
I tried almost everything:
1. Formatting FAT32
2. Reformatting in the tablet
3. Reformatting in the PC
4. Even formatting using a software from Verbatim website
The problem persists: SD Card is not editable (delete files, write files, edit files) when inserted in the tablet. SD works perfectly in the PC.
Finally I purchased another SD 64 Gb Toshiba Class 10. The SD package says it can work at 40 Mb/sec. The card write at 10 Mb/sec but it reads faster.
This Toshiba card works perfectly. I can erase or move files using android file manager (My Files app), I can write from the PC using tablet connected via USB to the PC. I can create files directly in the tablet (I used Jota+ to create a text file).
Verbatim card and Toshiba card specs seem identical, except by the speed claimed in the Toshiba package. There is some difference I am missing but definitively these cards are not equal (something in the card data bus ?)
I repeat, thanks to everybody who tried to help.
I only ever buy Samsung memory cards for years, and i test every one for errors and i have never found any, And if an Samsung memory card does not work in an Samsung tablet, well it is not going to happen, but people go for the cheap alternative.
John.

Lineage on S5 - No folders on PC

Hi folks,
Lineage 16 (latest version) is now installed on my S5, however when I connect the USB, the phone just shows as 'SM-G900F' on my W10 PC and cannot be expanded, basically no Phone and Card folders.
I can see them in the phone no problem, but once I connect it, I am not prompted with the usual message on what I want to do, like file transfer etc. and on the left menu appears only the model of the phone.
I had no issues when I flashed the original firmware, so it must be related to Lineage.
I also installed the Android USB drivers, but no go.
Changing the USB Preferences, to PTP or File Transfer only allows me to see the phone folder but no SD.
I also tried a new SD, no success.
Any thoughts?
Thank you,
Alex

I have re-flashed everything and started from the beginning.
lineage-16.0-20190918-nightly-klte-signed + open_gapps-arm-9.0-mini-20190921
SanDisk SD Card 32GB, either way I try to format it does the following:
Phone Storage: attempt to invoke virtual method 'java.lang.String android.os.storage.VolumeInfo.getId()' on a null object reference.
SanDisk SD Card unsupported
Portable Storage: When I hit format, it says: Your Card is ready to use - I click Done but still the cart shows in the Storage area as portable Storage SanDisk SD Card Unsupported
The card is OK, also because if I flash the original ROM the same card works perfectly and shows up in my PC too.
This is very annoying, I am stuck on this for days and even trying other cards I get the same.
I hope you can help me to resolve this matter.
Thank you!
Alex
