Sadly, I had root on a previous firmware, but an update that happened while I was at work took that out when it updated to the 5....3 version (and now the .4). I've read everywhere around here that there is no way to gain root back using any current software solutions on the Fire TV, mainly because we cannot connect to the device via USB.
I have a Male A to Male A USB cable that I bought for something completely unrelated.
I saw a post here regarding the use of a cable, and that it gained the user Fastboot. So, in trying I disconnected the Fire TV power, connected the Fire TV to my laptop via the male to male usb cable, and plugged the power back on.

My laptop reported in the device manager (Windows 7), "FireTV" with no drivers loaded. I manually used the Android ADB drivers from Google, but was unable to connect to the Fire TV via Fastboot or ADB while in this mode. It seems that at least, the Fire TV is not in USB host mode while at the white Amazon Logo.
I then tried the Alt+PrtScn+i command while the Amazon Fire TV color logo started to appear, to get the device into recovery (from this post). I was successful getting to this screen:
However, when I attached the male to male usb cable, nothing showed up. I even set the Fire TV into "apply update from ADB" which then said it was looking at the USB for an update. Sadly, it seems that in recovery, the Fire TV is now in USB Host mode, and will not connect to an external device.

Fastboot will work with the usb. Unfortunately because the bootloader is locked, you can't do anything with it. Both fastboot boot and fastboot flash are disabled. The kernel that the OS and recovery uses is in USB host mode as you saw. Further, I'm pretty sure adb is disabled in recovery to begin with. Long story short, there is nothing you can do.

I am in the same boat. Have you find a solution?

Hi, I am just wondering why I can't install USB drivers for my phone. I have tried everything that I could find but I still can't make my PC "see" my phone. I tried HTC Sync and that didn't work either.
Does anybody know why this is happening? Is there some driver issue that I am not aware of? Thanks in advance.
What does your PC say when you plug the phone in via USB?
What does your phone do when you plug it in? (You should see options like in the pic below.)
If you have Windows 7, after plugging in your phone - try Windows Update.
If the phone does nothing when you plug it in - have your tried another USB socket?
You could try installing android-sdk_r10-windows.zip
There is a USB package that comes with it which might help but it probably won't. (You shouldn't need any other part or package that comes with it though.)
Edit: Does your PC see other USB devices?

What does your PC say when you plug the phone in via USB? It always attempts to install the USB drivers but it always fail to find one.
What does your phone do when you plug it in? (You should see options like in the pic below.)Yes it does show those options and I always choose "disk drive"
If you have Windows 7, after plugging in your phone - try Windows Update.Already did. Nothing comes up.
If the phone does nothing when you plug it in - have your tried another USB socket? Yes I have, it always try to do the same thing. I remove the USB Drivers from Device Managers but I always end up with the same failed process.
You could try installing android-sdk_r10-windows.zip I already have but nothing happens.
Edit: Does your PC see other USB devices? Yes it does. All my devices are using USB connectors (keyboard, mouse, usb hub, etc.)
I am not considering my phone as a faulty one as I tried to connect it to my Mac and it functions as a disk drive although it disconnects itself on the first minute of it being connected, must be because of some app or something, then functions normally. I hope I can fix this soon because I need to root.

Did you solve this problem? I have the same one.
A bad USB connection can cause these problems, use USB one if on a laptop or one in the back of a desktop model.

Try to use the other USB cable or origin USB cable.
Try one more thing. Change a new SD card
Is it second hand phone ? If yes, no comment and too many possibility.

Hi, I too am having this problem, just got a DHD but when plugged into pc charges but no promt for anything else like all other htc devices. Tried different htc sync suite versions and singular drivers, changed sd cards and cables but still nothing. Any ideas welcome.
Thanks
It depend of the ROM you have (the picture is for a sense rom).
On some you can choose an action to be always performed, so it never prompt.
Go in your settings.
And... clean the phone usb connector. Pockets are sometime dusty
Blow in the connector and try again. Easiest problems are sometime the ones we forget.
which rom do u use?
If you're running Windows 7 64bit, try deleting all driver files via Device Manager, then booting into Windows with the "Disable driver digital signature enforcement" option, then plug in your phone and try to install drivers.
Sorry for slow response.
Im running stock everything to my knowledge, and on xp, tried cleaning usb port, still nothing. Haven't tried different comp, will now...
Edit, tried Vista, nothing. Dunno what to do next.

Even in charging mode your phone should be detected. Most likely your cable is only for charging or it is damaged. Could also be your phone's micro usb port is damaged. If you are getting nothing on 2 computers it has to be one or the other.
What mode do you have your phone in when you try to connect? In Disk Drive mode your sd card should be detected as a removeable hard drive. And the drivers for this are included in all windows OS. No need to install any drivers for this mode.
Also many have issues with HTC Sync. Try installing MyPhoneExplorer. You can get it from The Market. And it will give you a link in the more information part to install the needed desktop software for your computer. Works well and has many features.
I have run into a snag, the kindle fire I was working on was stuck at the fire fire boot screen, I used Kindle fire unbrick utility by Zombiepiratez and it got me back into TWRP.
I went ahead and used the utility again to restore the stock amazon rom, however after the download completed, and I saw a brief flash about the boot mode and starting a copy over to the sd card. Then the usb cable got knocked out.
Now the kindle is stuck back at the fire fire boot screen, but it is not "recognized" by windows, it is seen as an unknown device, I have tried uninstall/reinstalling the drivers via windows device manager and SDK but it hasn't done anything, windows always says better drivers are already installed. (this is after I told it to uninstall the drivers and then went back in to install new ones.)
So whenever I try to adb to the device i get
"*daemon not running. stating it now on port 5037*"
"daemon started successfully"
"error: device not found"
Is there anyway to get around this or do I just need to buy the person a new kindle?
Thanks you for your time and assistance,

Steps To Fix
Whenever you run SDK manager make sure you run it as an administrator.
Uninstall
1. Uninstall Driver in device manager
2. Uninstall Android SDK
3. Check to make sure SDK is totally uninstalled from C:\Program Files (x86)\Android if not delete any lingering folders
3. Uninstall .android folder from C:\Users\-username-\.android
4. Restart
Install
1. Install Android SDK and with the adb tools and google drivers.
2. Use the driver installer from Kindle Fire Utility to insure the drivers are installed correctly for the kindle (This will add the adb_usb.ini file mentioned below).
3. Make sure 0x1949 is shown in this file -adb_usb.ini- at this location: C:\Users\-username-\.android

There is 4-5 threads a day about the KF not being recognized by windows i am sure you would not have to look real hard to find a solution.
Sometimes spending a few extra minutes educating yourself before you try something like this really helps too.
Thanks for your time but,
I have been searching this forum and others for the past two days for this problem, searching this forum is how i got past the driver issues to get the kindle rooted, install fire fire and TWRP. These past two days I used it to get different drivers installed that made it so I could get inside the boot loop and use Kindle Fire Unbrick Utility to get back into TWRP. However I have been trying anything similar to my problem to get the drivers up again but nothing has worked yet. I came across one person who seemed to be having the same problem as me, where the device was just listed as unknown, they where told to reinstall drivers but got no where, but I couldn't post there since it was in the development forum. That is the same issue I am having, from the message windows is giving it is just ignoring the request to install a set of drivers and under the drivers properties, it is shutting down the usb for that device saying something along the lines of their being an error.

No, actually, the program is for Windows. What you need to do is install drivers as ADB Composite, and then flash it. However, you could flash TWRP through fastboot if you are more comfortable doing that.
Also, just use the "Stuck at boot logo" When you're, well, stuck at the boot logo. The flash amazon update button is only for those without recovery and are not able to boot into /system
maybe a little help on the drivers:

Thanks, I just got done digging around for one of three usb sticks to do linux... but they have disappeared again... So I'm doing the install via windows, before I try I'll give the Kindle Unbrick Utility another shot after I do a reinstall of SDK. Let you know how it goes.
Thanks for your time,

Edit: I have used the Kindle Unbrick Utility 'Recovery Loop' and it got me into TWRP, if I am able to get there again how would I go about restoring the Kindle to stock.. If it was mine I'd just install a custom rom and go my way but it belongs to someone else and since it froze they are now scared of root and any other modifications....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399072
nevertheless i would use one of the prerooted stock roms - fff & twrp is a "safety net"

Thanks everyone for your help, I got everything back up and running last night. Your assistance was great. I just wish I could have encouraged the owner to keep the "safety net" but his young kids also use the device and he is scared of the whole brick thing now..... I will update my first post after class tonight documenting the steps taken and see if I can change the title to something that people will notice as something relevant to their issues.

To get off logo I just waited until it ran out of battery and plugged it in.
Hey guys, I'm new here and I just registered. I have read almost EVERYTHING xda has to offer including the KF for Beginners, Bootloaders, etc. So I'm gonna cut right through the chase here.
* I TRIED to root my KF using KFU 0.9.6 and choosing option "[2] Install Permanent Root Using Superuser". got hung up on fastboot mode. I am sure that TWRP was not installed because it was supposed to be installed in fastboot mode, but when KFU told my KF to reboot for fastboot mode, the driver failed and I saw a little pop-up on the lower right hand corner of my computer saying that the device IS NOW unrecognized. From that moment I knew I was screwed.
* I am absolutely 100% sure that my Kindle Fire 6.3.1 is stuck in Fastboot Mode. (Because it shows the stock bootloader logo, (The "Kindle Fire logo and the backlight is very bright") and sometimes it shows up as "kindle" in Device Manager) There is no yellow triangle, just the plain "Kindle Fire" logo with a very bright backlight.
* Running "install_bat" from KFU did absolutely nothing for me. Yeah it got installed okay, but it still doesn't help my kindle to get recognized. (I installed the "install_bat" with my KF plugged out, my PC by the way is WinVista 32-bit)
* SOMETIMES when I plug in my kindle and get lucky, it becomes listed as Other Devices -> kindle (w/ a yellow exclamation mark next to it) but EVERYTIME that I update this "kindle" in Device Manager, I get a code 10 error saying that it did not install the "Android ADB Interface" properly. (Android ADB Interface because my KF is in fastboot mode.) BUT IT WILL STILL SHOW UP IN THE DEVICE MANAGER AS Android Phone -> Android ADB Interface (with a yellow exclamation mark next to it) and EVERYTIME that I try to uninstall the drivers, and check the checkbox that says "delete the driver software for this driver?", i plug out my my KF and when I plug it back in it says "Unknown Device", getting me back to square one.
* MOST OF THE TIME that I try to plug in and plug out my KF, somehow it's listed as Unknown Device (I tried updating the Unknown Device using the "android_winusb.inf" file but it says that it's not compatible)
* When I try to do the same steps on other PCs, I get the same annoying results.
* I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT get ADB to work. KFU always shows ADB Status: Offline, Boot Status: Unknown. Even though my KF is plugged in and the Device Manager lists it as "Android ADB Interface (w/ yellow exclamation mark)" It says it cannot detect the device. I'm wondering if it would really detect my KF because it is in fastboot mode. Will it still detect my KF even though it's stuck in fastboot mode and the "Android ADB Interface" has a yellow exclamation mark on it?
* NO MATTER how many times I tried to hard turn-off my KF, (15 secs. power button press) and reboot it again, plug in, plug out, restart my computer, download a fresh KFU0.9.6 from this website, install drivers, uninstall + delete drivers, install drivers, KFU still shows that my ADB Status is offline and my Boot Status is unknown. Is it really supposed to show it like that no matter how many tries I give it because my device is in fastboot mode?
* I know there is still a chance to unbrick my KF without the use of a "Factory Cable" or the Linux LiveUSB + Soupkit.
I know that this thread is pretty much closed and outdated but I still hope that there is someone there that can help me. Thanks in advance and more power to xda-developers.com!
Accidental full wipe of my Nexus 7 has left me with a no OS paper weight.
Fastboot indicates it's locked but I can boot into TWRP, but can't get it to be recognized by any PC and it won't recognize my OTG-USB (which has been recognized by others).
Any ideas as to how to get her up and running would be greatly appreciated.

Did you mount the OTG usb in TWRP or just looked for it to auto detect?
Btw, this belongs in the Q & A section, so ask a mod to move it
I am unable to select/check mount the OTG while in TWRP. The OTG is formatted correctly as the OTG is readable on other devices, but it seems like it just isn't being found by the N7. I'm baffled.

I am able to fastboot, but still can't get the pc to recognize that it's connected. The tablet takes a charge, but the pc never acknowledges that a device is connected, device manager never indicates a device is connected.
-If you don't have any Roms on internal storage, that's no good since you have TWRP.
-Try A different USB cable.
-Definitly make sure you have installed Google USB drivers.
-Have you tried ADB Sideload in twrp? Maybe TWRPs' adb will work better.
It looks like you need to update your bootloader as well, go with the latest factory images.
If you need to know where to find the above things I can point you to them. You must eventually get the PC to recognise it in fastboot though.

Thanks. Everything hinges on the PC being able to recognize that I'm attempting to connect the tablet (or for the tablet to recognize that I've attached the OTG).
I have tried multiple USB cables and ensured that the drivers are installed on the multiple PCs I've attached to.
I have tried to ADB sideload in TWRP, but since none of the PCs recognize that the tablet is connected to the PC, ADB won't work.
Again, it's not that the drivers are not installed, but rather the PC not recognizing that I have attached a device through the USB (no sound, no pop-up, nothing in the device manager). It is extremely frustrating, especially since the device charges via the USB from the PC.

Device Manager doesn't even show something like "qualcomm_qloader"? That's seems worse than any other hard brick I've seen.
-OTG should be FAT32 formated (probably is).
-We're you using Lollipop with that 4.02 bootloader? I believe that was A prerequisite for installing Lollipop which may have cause the tablet to not show on the PC.

Hate to be A downer, I hard bricked A galaxy s4 I had for only 5 days last month. That never turned on again. It's not fun.
I had the same issue. The only way I could fix was a full adb restore. I tried several other ways and none worked.

Nothing shows in the device manager. I was using KitKat on the tablet.
Turns on without an issue, opens TWRP with no issue.
when connected to the PC nothing occurs, not when it's on the Google screen, not when it's in TWRP, not in Fastboot, not when it's restarting. Nothing.
if it was the driver being missing, I'd at least see the device attached, just not communicating properly

I'm just hoping since I can get into TWRP someone has an idea of how I can get it to recognize the OTG or the PC to see it and I can get into ADB.
Corrupted usb port on the tablet? Maybe broken pin. Try to examine it. It can happen that it is being charged but not identified by the pc because of a faulty port. Try live install of ubuntu to chech if it sees the device.

the port looks perfectly fine, I was thinking the same thing, but there doesn't seem to be any damage. I almost wish it was damaged so I could at least assume that's the problem and just trash the thing.
Hi guys, wondering if you can help me. I have a firestick, its the voice control one. Its not rooted and is stock. I installed FireStarter on it but now its unuesable. Everytime I boot it, it says loading home but never does, it then goes to network issue but the remote does not work. I am not able to do anything. I want to be able to hard reset it but without the remote I cant do anything. I cant ADB via network as its not connected. I can plug it to a PC and it shows USB. The screensaver eventually comes on. I have changed the batteries in the remote but no joy. Can anyone shed some light please?
I have exactly the same problem.. did you solve it?
you may give a try with the remote of your TV if HDMI-CEC is supported by it.

You probably already tried this but in case you haven't you have to hold the home button sometimes for a really long time for the fire stick to pick up the remote. I had to do that for a fire stick I was setting up, it took a long time holding home button but eventually it paired the remote.
I tried everything. All known button combos etc. Just couldn't do anything with it
hi,
If you have adb debugging Enabled on stick,
you can connect the stick on usb PC , and you can send adb command and move into stick Menu settings with adb command:
http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-remotely-control-an-amazon-fire-tv-or-fire-tv-stick-via-adb/
For adb drivers on Windows PC , look here :
http://www.aftvnews.com/fire-tv-stick-usb-port-not-for-power-only-adb-over-usb-confirmed/
use Moborobo.
Or if you on a Mac/ PC Linux , just open a terminal
and send adb command.
Tried all that. Is there a way to flash stock firmware via adb?
but can you send adb command via usb/PC?
If yes, you can move into amazon settings with adb
command to On bluetooth or connect wifi or reset factory ..
I have tried to toggle WiFi and Bluetooth but no joy. Do you know the adb commands to factory reset?
i think you can't launch factory reset via adb on firestick.
And command: svc wifi enable on did nothing?
nothing. cant do anything with it
but if you send via adb:
adb shell am start -n com.amazon.tv.launcher/.ui.SettingsActivity
Can you see the amazon Menu settings ?
I don't understand why you can't do this if you can
connect via adb/PC to go after with
command adb shell input keyevent xx in menu to launch factory reset or reconnect wifi ...
I can only connect while it is plugged into the PC. So I am unable to see anything. When it's plugged into hdmi nothing at all works.
ok i will try if i can find a soluce via adb..

Ummm, If you take screenshot via adb command ,
you can see where you are in the Menu settings
to gradually move to change/launch what you want
with input keyevent xx ..
After stick is connect via adb/PC
1) take a screenshot to verify what appears on amazon Home
2) Launch Menu settings with adb command
adb shell am start -n com.amazon.tv.launcher/.ui.SettingsActivity
3) Take a screenshot to verify Menu settings appears on screen
4) if it's good , use adb command input keyevent xx to move accross Menu settings and take screenshot to verify your move.
Adb command for screenshot:
adb shell screencap -p /sdcard/filenameXX.png
### pull screenshot to windows pc in c:\
adb pull /sdcard/filenameXX.png c:\
Now you can open filenameXX.png in c:\ to watch firestick screen and verify what you do on it

firestickTV is plugged in hdmi ..
Its works via hdmi !! so i can't help you more...
Perhaps can you retry with my instructions here...
You can easily reconnect wifi/ pair your bluetooth remote but for launch a factory reset , i don't know if you can because firestick is connected on PC/usb port and can says error power problems ...
Thanks for your help. The unit is with a friend at the moment but when I get it back I will try these out and let you know
Hello,
I have similar problem and trying to learn how to get my stick working.
How did you connect Fire TV Stick to your laptop? Did you use HDMI to USB convertor?
Thanks,
Apur
HDMI is for video/audio out only. if you are thinking about connecting it to a laptop to watch movies on it - you cant. Most laptops don't have video in connectors.
If you wan't to connect the Fire TV Stick via a data connection (basically to troubleshoot, install stuff, poke around in the file system - you always do that via its USB port. Or wirelessly - having adb debugging enabled in the developer options.
If you have issues getting adb to connect to your device, especially wirelessly - toggle the adb switch in the developer options off and on again (only one remote adb connection is allowed at a time - sometimes the channel is "busy" already - togling it off and on a again "clears" it). If you still have issues - its most likely a networking problem. Usually, that you don't know much about networking.. Or adb. But you can learn that.

I just encountered the issue with getting stuck at connection settings, with the remote not functioning. A USB keyboard did the trick to get it going.
I think I messed it up by side loading a different version of ES file explorer from their site,.and tried to use sender which locked up the box

Howdy all, I have an old KF here that I have bricked. I'm stuck at the logo. I'm trying to issue shell commands and I get the "- exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2)" error. So far I've found that this means I screwed up my /system when I tried getting this thing back to stock. I cannot remember what I was running on it earlier today.
I do know that I downloaded a factory update.zip and installed that from TWRP. I wiped everything before hand. I'm afraid wiping the SD card after installing the update.zip may have caused me to be stuck at the logo without being able to issue shell commands? I've tried the KindleFireUtility and KindleUnbrickUtility and a few things with soupkit. Nothing is working.
I seem to have found a few hints that there are indeed workarounds to this problem without having to make or buy a factory cable. I'm terrible at soldering.. much better at typing in terminals.
If there is any help out there, I would massively appreciate it.
All I want to do is read a d*** book.

UPDATE:
I bought a fastboot cable.
It appears that I can boot in to fastboot mode (Kindle Fire logo, green light, and screen never dims) but I think at some point, the device gets lost. I installed the android bootloader ADB drivers for the fastboot mode. If I start the kindle without the factory cable and it boots normally and sits at the logo screen forever, it gets listed as an ADB device. While the kindle is still attached, I can reboot it in to what I am assuming is fastboot mode. My Windows10 rig sees it as a composite ADB bootloader interface. But I can't get unBrickUtility to do anything... the only thing I saw it do to the kindle was wipe the userdata. Other than that, UnBrickUtility cannot see my kindle in fastboot mode.
Unplugging my factory cable and plugging it back in causes the kindle to be completely unrecognized ( unknown usb device set address failed) on Windows 10.
I have soupkit running on a netbook... it tells me that my shell is damaged, which I know is the problem. But now I'm not sure what to do next as I can't get linux (mint) to recognize my kindle in fastboot mode either.
I really hope someone out there has been here before and can help. I'd love to see this thing running back to normal again.

UPDATE: I FIXED IT.
What ultimately saved this device was being able to get in to fastboot mode. I bough the cable, flashed FFF and TWRP from fastboot mode. I then found I could not run shell commands. I fixed this by running
Code:
fastboot oem format
from fastboot mode. Then going back in to TWRP, I was able to mount /System and was then able to use Soupkit's kindle fire utility to fix the /sdcard. The version of TWPR I was using would not flash the stock update, so I downloaded and flashed that. Afet that installed, I was able to flash the stock update and now I'm up and running again! WOO! Thank you so much for the developers here!!!
Admin: can I get the thread title so reflect the fact that I have fixed this for future users? Thank you!
