I have a T-mobile Samsung Galaxy s4 and this is my first root I've ever attempted.
Been trying to root my device for the past 5 days using various methods which include towelroot, odin 3.7, odin 3.10 and other methods. I even watched the video how to root it from xda. But I am just not having any luck. I have everything updated on the device thats updated from kit kat 4.4.4 and everything is stock.
Odin is just not connecting to my device while in download mode and I have also updated the usb driver as well from the samsung website. and when i plug my phone into my computer while the device is on it recognizes the device on my computer. So I really do not know what to do now.
Any advice or suggestions that I should part take on?

Download Kies and let it install the drivers. Once done you can remove Kies.
I use Odin 3.07. If Odin sees your phone use CF-AUTO ROOT to root your phone.
i did just that and retried and did nothing towards connecting during download mode
Are you opening Odin after you plug the device in? If so does it say a message, something about 'added!'

I tried both:
-connecting it before opening odin
-connecting it after opening odin.

I think I'm just not ment to root this phone haha
but it does not say anything about being connected.

Try different usb ports, down to the last one.. If the problem persists it might be the drivers.. In this case, uninstall kies and install drivers from Samsung

i have done this as well. could this be my transfer cable? the computer recognizes my phone when the device is on. but when the device is off and it download mode it doesn't install the driver. I hear the negative sound when i try and connect the device on my windows 7 laptop.

I will test the theory later tonight in an hour. I'll keep you posted, thanks for your help =]
Tested the theory of the 'aftermarket cable'
used my original cable that the phone came with, and it still did not connect while in download mode.
I have no clue what I am doing wrong.
Do you have kies installed? If so uninstall it, reboot, and try again
I have the Samsung Galaxy Tmobile with same dillema.
Been trying for 3 hours on my first root as well with one successful passing root that did not root like it said.

What method are you using?
Method used
I used Philz touch 6.08.9. A tar MD5 file
---------- Post added at 12:30 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:24 PM ----------
And Odin3 v3.09
---------- Post added at 12:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:30 PM ----------
it said it was successful but when I ran a check for root it came up negative
I had a similar problem once, chased it for hours to find a usb problem. Best test for that is connect the phone via Kies (usb, not wireless) and try to transfer files. If you can't get a file from your phone to the computer you have a hardware problem: usb port, cable, computer, or in the phone itself.

So I tried rooting my phone using the instructions at epic4touchroot and my phone got rooted.
I had the evil yellow triangle showing up so I looked at the threads here of how to remove it, I had also decided to unroot since my coverage for sprint has been terrible.
I put the phone in download mode and my computer does not recognize the device it won't even pop up on the computer at all- so flashing to normal with odin is a fail right now. I even tried several different USB cables
I thought maybe a USB jig could help but when I tried it out it took me to download mode but nothing happened.
I'm not sure what to do to at least get the phone sort of back to normal.
suggestions?
thanks!
After you connect the usb between pc and phone, did you click the vol up button on your phone? That will make your phone start to communicate with your pc.
You also need to install drivers for your PC. Google "kies windows drivers"
Please post a link to the ROM you flashed to your phone that caused the problem initially and tell us what you tried to remove the yellow triangle also. Either one could be part of the issue.
Guessing he went here:
http://epic4gtouchroot.com
...which uses sfhub's EL29 instructions. Since he's got the triangle makes me think he got all the way through the Rogue CWM repack.
OP, please make sure you're using the original Sammy cable, turn USB debugging on and plug in. If it still doesn't show up right away check Device Manager and see if you see any unknown or error devices in there.
If the jig gets you to download mode then it's working on the phone end - just need to get the PC talking to it again.
To remove the triangle you may want to push an ODIN ICS build, use Triangle Away and then push the EL29 Odin OC. (Source)

The website offers several alternatives, anything from ICS to GB based roms. Just wondering exactly which one.
I think it was the "updated" version, the zip to follow included Odin and Zedomax_kernel.
I also do have the latest kies version installed and it's not running at the time I try this and the phone is in debug mode
I've tried using my sammy cable and even a newer one from my friends S2 and it doesn't seem to do anything, I've pushed the volume up button and it's in the download screen it looks like the normal download screen it just says
"ODIN MODE
Product name: GT-i9100
Custom Binary Download: YES (1 counts)
Current Binary: Custom"
I've attached the zip file and I just had the tar file in the PDA slot.
I just did a root, i didn't install any ROM

The phone doesn't even appear as an Unknown Device, it just ignores the fact that it's connected to it.
I had tried to use the Triangle away app but it won't download through the market since it's incompatible with my phone (which is odd)

If you are using KIES, go ahead and uninstall it and install the full samsung driver suite from here:

And try download mode again. You should plug your phone in after odin is already up. Have you backed up your stuff yet btw?

Oddly enough, it did used to have the model number from the download screen, but i did a factory reset and it switched back to original
I'm going to do as you said, i'll update with what happens
If none of that works, download and install mobile odin from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=947041&d=1331745092
Also download to your phone this kernel:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/57223406/StockACS5-EL26.tar
And flash it to the phone through mobile odin.
Edit: This is mobile odin lite, I think it will need to download additional tools when you first use it.
Just select Kernel, browse for it on your phone, then scroll down and select Flash.
The phone should reboot when it's done.

I don't think he was using my instructions or he wouldn't have the yellow triangle. Except for very specialized builds, none of the stuff I put out would cause a yellow triangle nor increment the flash count. Even adding Rogue CWM through Auto Root would not produce a yellow triangle nor increment the flash count.
I'm thinking I was just a tad bit careless, It would figure that I'd mess up my personal phone but I do just fine doing it to other people's phone.
btw I'm not a he
UPDATE:
I uninstalled Kies and installed the phone driver and I did as you said but my phone was still not recognized during Download mode.
Right now i'm waiting for my phone to charge a bit so that I can try flashing the kernel through mobile odin.
thanks for dealing with me

It doesn't sound like anything you've done would have caused your phone to be not recognized by the computer. Usually only flashing an intl rom would do that.
You might want to try cleaning out your usb port using keyboard compressed air and more tries at different computers, cables, etc.
If your phone just won't connect, your other option is if you are still rooted. If so, you can eventually get some ROMs flashed. Just make sure nothing you do causes you to lose root, as you probably won't be able to get it back without your USB port functioning. Mobile ODIN requires existing root, so don't lose it if you still have it.
Is it the kernel he flashed that is affecting his download mode, odin and also showing the wrong phone info in download mode?
Most of all, will flashing a new kernel resolve the issue?

Additionally, do not use usb extension cables and try a different usb port on your computer.

I know this occurs to several users and to others phones such as SG2,III,Ace and many more. But so far, i still can't figure out how to solve it.
Installed Kies, Installed SGN2 kit 3.0.
When the phone is On, i can transfer any files through Kies, or just drag and drop. Even Odin detect my phone "port 3" in blue.
On the phone, i tickled USB debugging and hold down volume, menu+power to go in Flash mode. and from there i'm stuck. my computer can't detect the phone anymore.
Any help? please!

Its because he has toolkit and kies intalled at same time...it says in toolkit thread to have onr or other....the drivers dont mix
I had the same problem. Heres the solution. Uninstall Keis then reinstall. Then plug in your phone until all the drivers are installed. Make sure you use that same usb on your computer if you have more then one. Then try again by opening Odin first, then put phone in download mode and plug in the phone into the same usb as you did when installing the drivers. For some reason odin only works with the usb you plug your phone into, when you installed the drivers.

My wife has a T-Mobile GSII. I successfully rooted it via ODIN to CWM-SuperSU-v0.87. My wife wanted me to put it back to stock so I unrooted it to T989UVLE1. It was killing the battery (and some other weird things began happening) so I want to re-root it but now the USB port is not working so I can't ODIN it back to the rooted MOD.
When I plug in the USB cable connected to my PC it charges but it doesn't connect for data. My computer doesn't see it, and it doesn't show the USB icon in my notifications on the phone either. When I try to boot to recovery, it goes into download mode (even if it's not connected to a USB cable). ODIN doesn't see that it's connected so I can't change the ROM.
Now, I also have the SGH-T989 and used this same process successfully. When I connect it to the same PC with the same cable I can do anything I want, ODIN works, I can get to recovery mode when it's not plugged into a USB. It's as if my wife's phone thinks it's connected to a USB even though it's not and when it is connected it doesn't recognize it. I'm thinking I could send it in for warranty figuring the USB port is dead but the ROM that's on there isn't stock and I'm afraid I'll get into hot water with TMO. For grins, I uninstalled all of my Samsung drivers and reinstalled them, and did the same thing with Kies. My phone connects fine, my wife's doesn't at all.
Anyone have a good idea? I've looked around on here all day and can't find anything that will work for me.
Once you Odin back to stock on your wife's phone you lost the recovery. Use this version of Odin.
Remove battery
Open Odin (the one I provided)
Put battery back in after about 20 seconds
Hold volume up and volume down
Connect phone to computer via USB
Download mode should pop up on the phone and Odin should recognize your phone
After that just Odin a recover onto her phone and flash supersu to root

Sorry about that man. That was my faul, the dialogue means you need the ini file for Odin. I've reuploaded everything in a zip file here. Just unzip to your desktop and follow the same steps I provided earlier.
*note* the zip file includes the two Odin files you need...just open Odin.exe. A recovery tar file and a superuser zip file...the superuser zip I provided outdated so just use your root zip file.

Have you tried using a PC which you have not used for flashing your own?
I realize its unlikely to make a difference, but trying to flash your wifes using a "virgin" PC is at least worth a shot...
Chris
Another thing you could try is disconnect the phone from the PC (leave it powered up and everything), load up device manager in windows then plug the phone in and watch for device manager to flicker or do anything. I'm thinking maybe your phones are the same (T989's) but possibly a different revision that requires a different driver. Device manager will tell you if the phone was able to start or not. One thing that SOMETIMES works with windows computers (although it sounds silly) is to use a different USB port. I always use the one on the back of my computer as it is directly connected to the motherboard and thus offers a shorter path for the data to travel. I have had issues using front USB ports with devices before (my MP3 player will time out during large data transfers if I use the front USB port sometimes).
Also, is "debug mode" turned on on your phone? It is under development tools. If it is off, try turning it on. And with it on, do you get any results from running "adb devices" (presuming you have the android SDK installed or a copy of adb floating around on your computer from some other tools)?
And lastly, does the phone charge when the USB cable is plugged in? It is unlikely that 2 of the pins on the USB connection are bad without them all being bad.
Good Ideas!
Well, I've tried a couple of those ideas. The Device Manager idea revealed nothing. Nothing changes in the Device Manager when I plug in the phone. The phone DOES charge, so like you said, it's likely a software issue not hardware since two of the pins seem to work fine. BTW- the phone acknowledges it has been plugged in, too, by beeping. The computer does not.
I had tried using different computer USB ports because I have found the same to be true as you: the ports on the back go directly to the motherboard but the ones on the front are actually going through a hub, though it's inside the case, the computer sees it as a hub.
I don't have ADB Devices. I don't have any experience with that program...can you advise me? Next up, trying on a virgin computer...
Thanks for the ideas. I've got to get this worked out or my wife's going to DIE. Currently, the home button doesn't take her home, it takes her to this weird Clock App based lock screen/screen saver. Anyone have an idea how to correct that problem itself?
UPDATE: I tried to install and run ADB Devices and it didn't result in recognition by my computer.
Sending in For Warranty
It appears that this is my problem.
I took it to TMO and they approved a warranty replacement for a faulty USB port. Just in case anyone wondered.
Hello all,
I have flashed ROMs via recovery and Odin plenty of times. I would say I generally know what I am doing and I flash ROMs on the regular. This is my second Samsung device and have been rooting/flashing for almost two years, so not a noob.
I was stuck in a bootloop on my Note and it wouldn't even let me boot into recovery, so I decided to Odin and back to stock and try again... I got the one-click, phone recognized, yellow COM box popped up, hit start, walked away for 10-15 minutes. Come back and there has barely been any progress at all... I could barely see the green progress bar. I figured something is wrong because I've done this before and it only takes a minute at most. What I did next is what I think messed me up...I pulled my phone and closed the Odin dialogue box and tried to redo it. Problem is, nothing I could do would get me the Yellow COM box. The phone goes into download mode but Odin doesn't seem to want to recognize it. I've tried EVERYTHING. When I boot the phone normally, I get the Samsung error screen saying there was an issue with a firmware upgrade and I should try Kies. I download Kies and attempt to upgrade firmware that way, but I get to the last step where it says "Upgrade Firmware" or something like that on the button but the button remains greyed out and I can't click it... I have tried everything. I downloaded the toolkit and installed drivers but each time I do that, the driver install freezes my PC at the end of the install. Same thing happens if I try to get the drivers from the Samsung site directly, the computer freezes. I have rebooted a million times and tried every USB port there is. I have had the computer try to "set up" the deivce while it's in download mode a few times but usually hangs at the end (probably bc drivers not properly installing). Once or twice it setup fine, but still Odin won't recognize. I think the driver thing is moot because it was recognizing the device before this mess just fine and it recognizes and accesses my wife's S2 just fine.
I am at my wit's end. Did I destroy my phone???? Is there nothing I can do to salvage it?
I just aged about five years in the last 2 hours. Please someone help!!!
Longshot, but try installing the toolkit on a different system and try again. I've had drivers from different systems mixed up and it worked fine when installed on a fresh system. Probably not your problem, but worth a try before trying to warranty your phone. Good Luck.
Also try a different usb cable.

Will warranty work if in Odin mode the phone says that I have a custom ROM and custom recovery installed???
Am I out of luck here? I always thought that if it boots up, it's not completely bricked. Shouldn't a PC see it if I get the drivers installed???
If no computer sees it and the Download/Odin screen shows Root and custom ROM/Recovery so no warranty replacement, what are my options?

You say it finds your wife's phone just fine and she has the same model? Have you tried installing the drivers manually through the driver update in device manager?
As to other options, if you're paying for the additional insurance Sprint offers, and are willing to pay the $200 deductable (as opposed to the $500 replacement cost) you could always turn it on and drop it in a bucket of water. They won't be able to pull root/rom info from the unit at that point. Otherwise I think it's a matter of luck as to what kind of techs work in the store you go to. I've heard stories about those who were sticklers and those who didn't care (the latter tend to those who root their own phones). All you can do is ask, hypothetically of course.
Wish I could be more help. Good luck.
Please help!!! Does anyone have any other advice?

You say it finds your wife's phone just fine and she has the same model? Have you tried installing the drivers manually through the driver update in device manager?
As to other options, if you're paying for the additional insurance Sprint offers, and are willing to pay the $200 deductable (as opposed to the $500 replacement cost) you could always turn it on and drop it in a bucket of water. They won't be able to pull root/rom info from the unit at that point. Otherwise I think it's a matter of luck as to what kind of techs work in the store you go to. Appreciate your help. Wife's phone is a different model, but also Samsung.
I do not have the Sprint insurance unfortunately. I will probably try to go through the Samsung warranty, but not holding my breath....

If you can get the drivers to extract (I know it crashes when you try to install) you could still try the manual update method for your phone's drivers. (can't count how many times I've had to do that for peripherals and my win7 laptop that isn't certified for win7)
Did you try completely uninstalling the drivers before you tried to reinstall them?

try this.http://www.sxtpdevelopers.com/showthread.php?t=228 same idea just different modem. read through and make sure you understand what garwin is saying. If you dont have anything special on your internal sd card I would use the wipe all as the no data restore didnt work for me some reason. also download this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957155 as it will hook you up with the right drivers.

Thanks but this is exactly what I tried first and continue to try... The problem is I unplugged the phone while the one-click was doing its thing because it wasn't progressing. The phone still goes into to Download mode but the one-click no longer 'sees' the phone when I plug it in, so I can't try again...

You said the computer doesnt recognize it right? If it did I would recommend flashing a custom recovery then going from there.

If I get my computer to somehow recognize the device via the drivers, I should not use the odin one-click to just go back to stock? How do I install a custom recovery if I can't boot into Android?

I would download the tool kit and reinstall the drivers from their. I had the exact same problem months ago. took hours of trying to flash different stuff to get it to work. make sure that you try to unplug then replug in the cord and I think you must use a cord that is made for your phone. Mine wont work unless I use the one supplied with it which is weird but I read somewhere that the prongs are longer or something.open the oneclick oden then plug the phone in and let it sit for a min or 2

I'm going to try tonight on a different computer.
So you think I should do the following:
1. install drivers
2. open odin one-click
3. put phone in download mode
4. plug phone in
5. even though yellow COM thing should pop up right away let it sit for a while
6. flash one-click back to stock
I'll give it a shot after work.

I have actually had this happen before. I couldnt get anything to work even the one click. So what I did was use the toolkit to flash a custom recovery with the stock kernel. Then when it rebooted I held the volume up home, and power buttons. Go into recovery and nandriod back to my previous rom and it worked. But my pc did recognize my device.

I didn't know you could flash a recovery to the phone without booting to Android. The toolkit says boot to android as pre-req for installing recovery. If I could get to recovery I could fix this. I'll give it all a shot again tonight.

Hello everyone...
I was updating the phone recently, and went to reboot it (cyanogen mod ROM btw) and now I have no idea what it did but it is now stuck on the Samsung logo, and their is no recovery I can use on it. Only DL mode works.
I tried to use Odin to relfash but the problem is on both my Windows 7 and Windows 8 computers, they install the drivers, but they still fail to recognize the phone when I plug it in!
I have tried different USB ports, a full driver uninstall, multiple USB cords and the computer refuses to recognize the phone saying "USB Device not recognized"
Again, the drivers install fine, and I did a reboot after each install and uninstall. No luck.
I didnt even install drivers on my W8 netbook and I was able to flash back TWRP using Odin and Download mode yesterday when my attempt at flashing TWRP 2.6.0.4 originally failed.
Fire up download mode, then open up Odin (you should see a COM port open), load up what you need to install, then flash.
What are you trying to flash using ODIN? A bootloader or a ROM?
"BootLooping GhostBrick"
Holy crap! you too? I'm experiencing the same thing too bro. its my girlfriend's phone tho. she's borrowing my Nexus 4 while I work on fixing her SGS2...I seem to have contracted a serious case of the BootLooping GhostBrick, just like you did, right after updating. I went through the same steps troubleshooting as you did, and ...its a guess, but I'm starting to figure the solution will probably include: 1. using ADB to push sum files to the phone, or otherwise somehow reflashing stock firmware from the PC.
2. Re-Root the dam thing and flash a kernel with a recovery (like CWM or TWRP) using rom manager...and 3. Considering installing a ROM of my choice Like PACMAN, or Cyanogenmod.....hmm...Yum
anyway, the search for the vaccine to this dreadful affliction begins. Please post if you find something, I will too.

Reinstall Odin and the drivers for t989, then go get twrp 2.6.0.4 from techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/hercules then open Odin and put the phone in DL mode, now when odin connects make sure u open the recovery in PDA format and touch nothing else in Odin, flash twrp and ur good, this version is capable of dealing with 4.3 too with no issues at all

Re-installing Odin and drivers still didn't get Odin to recognize the device in download mode. Windows 7 isn't assigning it any COM port, and nothing can be flashed unless Odin sees the com port the device is on. I used Goo Manager to flash TWRP 2.6.0.3 over my previous 2.6.0.0 version and now I'm stuck on samsung logo, can't reboot to recovery and PC won't recognize device in download mode. Anyone know a solution?

Welcome to ur first soft brick, and as I said in ur other post u need to disable or removes Samsung kies before trying to use Odin as long as any part of kies is running even in background Odin won't see the device, also make sure u use factory/data approved USB wires, also try diff ports, sometimes Odin won't see com3 but will see com5, be patient and follow this and ull be fine, also twrp2.6.0.3 has been known to cause sftbricks, DL 2.6.0.4 from techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/hercules its the newest and 4.3 compatible

Yeah, I wish I'd known that. Goo Manager automatically selected it as the latest recovery. I just can't get past the device not showing up as a com port issue at all. Is there any known way to make windows recognize it?

It's not a matter of trying different com ports, I can't get the PC or Odin to recognize the phone in download mode despite uninstalling kies, installing the latest drivers twice, 3 different OEM cables, multiple usb ports, nothing. when I plug it in, Windows doesn't make any sound like with other usb devices, nor does it try and search for drivers. Are there any other options short of JTAG repair?

I was going to reply earlier, but I got side tracked and this guy is literally having the exact same problem as me. I tried multiple OEM cables, and ports and Windows recognized it but it still won't let me USE it. Odin (after re-install) still shows no connections or ports.
Also, yeah this phone isn't mine either, my Dads. He is using my old S3 for now and is quite mad with me hahaha.
So yeah, I have to re-cap...
-Updated through Goomanager.... (the culprit I am guessing)
-Rebooted
-Got stuck on the Galaxy S 2 screen
-Plugged in with 4 USB cables to three different USB ports
-Uninstalled and reinstalled Odin numerous times, each with a reboot between.
-Odin fails to recognize it
-Windows KNOWS IT IS THERE, and makes a sound when plugged in, however it says "USB Device not recognized"
Any more ideas?
Thanks for the help to guys it is very much appreciated. I will donate to the person that can help me out of this

Omg....
I am experiencing the same problem. Did anyone find the solution?
Probably a faulty USB port. My computer shows that message all the time, only one of them works correctly. If not, you just need to install the correct USB Drivers, because even if you don't have them it should recognize your phone as a Samsung phone but will say that the drivers did not install correctly.
