Wifi speeds garbage? Am I holding it wrong? - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So got my Note 4 today and noticed some trouble when it took hours and hours to get all my apps synced...so went on to do some speed tests side by side my Note 2. Note 2 on wifi consistently pulling 7 mbps DL/ 6 UL, while the 4 is only getting 1 mbps DL and 3 UL. What gives? Anyone else having issues? I'm tempted to say I have a dud.

No issues here... Radios in this device seem insanely good in my experience..

Same problem here, note 3 pulling 50mb, note 4 barely 16(

yeah saw your post while searching. Doing more research...getting some erratic behavior. Reset once, still got bad numbers, reset again and got good ones in the 20s-30s (normal for the room I'm in). Bluetooth won't pair with my Moto 360, maybe it was going crazy trying...it just keeps connecting/disconnecting. Hrmph!

Just did a bunch of tests on mine... looking good..

Got watch paired after some angry factory resets on it, connection might be ok now....I've got my eye on it though! I won't complain further until I get a full day of various scenarios at least.

I haven't had any further problems since that initial oddness, so calling it a hiccup. Thanks for your info.

I am having wifi issues as well. Wired connection gets 46 down, 5 up. Macbook gets 26 down, 5 up. Note 4 gets between 5 and 7 down. I've checked my router settings and they all look correct. Is there anything that can be done? Are these devices being released with poor wifi?

It doesn't seem like its the hardware, using a testing program called iPerf I am able to get good speeds. But anything running in a Java android app like browser downloads, speed test.net etc gets HORRIBLE speed. There is something wrong with Android. Its not a hardware problem.

I will give that app a try and see how it goes. Thank you for the suggestion.
I did just pick up a second Note 4 for myself, and it is testing about as poorly as my wife's.

Yep... Its really not hardware related so getting a new phone is just costing Samsung $$$.
Seems like only people on AC get good speeds. B, G, N its all horrible.

I haven't checked in much on wifi speeds since those first 2 days. I'll recheck some stuff in different environments and see if anything pops up again. At work it's non AC routers. I might try to connect to the goofy comcast N? G? router at home and see what it does, too. Either way, it's not been consistently bad on AC even, but may have occasional issues? I so hate router technology!
At home: Apple Airport Extreme AC router
Initial experience: 1-4 mbs download
2 resets later and since that I've noticed: full speed (25-30 on my service)

Problems with WiFi download speeds VZW Nexus

Well I have been trying to figure out what is happening with my WiFi speeds on my Nexus. I just moved a few days ago and I now have some pretty fast internet unfortunately no 4G here so I rely on the WiFi. With my new faster WiFi I noticed I was getting slower speeds than with my other devices in the house. I have 2 Galaxy Tabs 10.1 and 2 Galaxy Notes, and a Thunderbolt. With all my other devices I get about 30 Mbps down, but on my Nexus I just can't get good speeds. I average about 11-12 Mbps with an occasional 16-17 Mbps still half of what I'm getting with my other devices.
I have a netgear router which has 802.11n so all of these devices should work. I have tried everything but nothings makes it any better. Today I got my first replacement and it has the same problem or issue.
I have made a Video. Sorry for the quality I was in a hurry in not so good lighting.
If you have any comments or suggestion please post them below.
Youtube Video: http://youtu.be/Zc1O96De7OU
Sorry the video audio cuts out at about 4:30 but in the end you can see some of the results from Today.
Wow I guess nobody else has the same problem.

Could be your router. They don't make good routers anymore that aren't simultaneous dual band. Your GNex sounds like it's the only dual-band device you have.

Well according to specs, the Galaxy Tabs, and the Galaxy Notes are Wireless 802.11 a/b/g/n so I would think they are multi band as well. What gets me is the other devices work good, only the Nexus will not perform on the Wifi like the others.
If it was the router I don't think the other devices would work good. Maybe I'm wrong.
I experience about the same speeds. I've got a Netgear 802.11g router at home and pull maybe 11-14mbps depending. But over at my parent's house with a Cisco/Linksys 802.11n router (same ISP), I get about the same speeds, maxing out at maybe 17-18mbps.
That obviously doesn't feel slow by any means though. Never sat there thinking that I'm getting inferior speeds. 17mbps is kinda overkill for the phone, especially with super small ping times.

Not sure what your parents speed is supposed to be, would be interesting to know? And it's not a issue of overkill, it is just something is not right with the WiFi on this phone. For myself I use the WiFi heavily especially since I only have 3 G where I live so I would like to take advantage of the fully capable speeds I have.
Anyone with a fast internet connection (30 Mbps +) can you test your Wifi speeds with your Nexus and post your results. I want to see if anyone can get a fast speed close to your PC or other devices.
Mine goes about as fast as anything else on my network but I have DSL... 3mbps tops
Edit: Actually the upload speed is reporting as faster than my internet actually is. (554kbps when my cap is 384kbps and my PC reads 320kbps) I vaguely remember a reviewer saying there was a bug in the Speedtest.net app that caches uploads or something like that and reports higher than it actually is.
Download speed is reading what it should be though.

Thats what I have charter, and I can't get much more than what you showed on a regular basis. But on my other devices I can consistently get 30 Mbps.
Thanks for helping I appreciate it.
Here is the speed with my Galaxy Note
Just reporting that I have wifi issues as well. My router is downstairs so it may as well be a penetration issue, but I'm pulling less than 5mbps on a 10mbps cable internet connection.
I've done numerous tests in the past with an EVO 3D, iPod Touch, and GS2. All report 10mbps consistently even when I'm upstairs while the Nexus struggles to load a webpage. I also tried a test downstairs and the Nexus did well pulling 10mbps but it is also inconsistent.
This is a weird problem.
No problem. download Adobe air!
It fixed and improved YouTube

Very interesting. I have TWC and their 30 down 5 up plan and I only see 11-12 down with the nexus. Something just not right with the nexus. Ran the test at the same spot with my wife's T-Mobile GS2 and hers maxed out at our TWC 30/5 limit. WHAT THE HECK! And this spot is 3 -5 ft away from the wifi router. Maybe the new drivers in 4.0.4 fix this issue?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
Hmm, after redoing the test downstairs, my wifi speeds seem to be in line with my other devices. Still does not solve the inconsistent speeds when I'm upstairs though, whereas my other devices plow through the speeds with consistency.
I just got my nexus and having problems with my wifi connection . YouTube is stopping, audio stream Pandora or tune in radio all stopping and playing . Never had problem with any other phones. I havevthe galaxybs 2 and the note and they have no problem streaming any video or audio.

[Q] Wifi Issues

So i've been experiencing some really slow wifi speeds. On both my Galaxy Nexus's so i know its not just my phone. They are on different ROMs. I have a router that goes to my main router in my work room. And the Router i connect to is in the living room to compensate for the low wifi signal on ICS. I will stand right next to it and run a speedtest but can only achieve 6-15 mbps depending on what server i use. However the one in the work room will do the normal 30mpbs that i expect. My laptop will do the 30mbps on the router in the living room as well as my epic 4g... so im positive it is an issue with the Nexus... but what issue? Does it not like the router? It cant be the wifi radio... because the wifi is just fine on the other router. Any ideas as to what can be done? Or am going to have to go out and buy me a new router? Or would a signal booster be better?
did I stump everyone?

Well...as you like to put it so many times....READ. There are documented issues with wifi on the GNex. All sorts of things from low signal, to data connection, poor voltage handling and so on. I suppose you could choose any reason you like for what is wrong with your phone. Maybe you just got a bad phone. One thing i did see on a google search, (did you?), that led me back to xda was that some people reported changing the wifi signal scanning from "both" to just the freq they were using showed some improvement...YMMV
Good Luck
Thanks for the condescension.

Nothing thus far, ive reset my router multiple times, i have tried different security settings. And nothing has helped thus far. I may try reflashing the firmware for the router and see if that helps any, if not the only thing i can think of is the fact that the phone doesnt like the two year old router and needs to be replaced.
I think GN wifi issues are mostly linked to the specific router or AP. 30mb sounds pretty darn good. I would probably purchase another one of those. Buy it from somewhere with a good return policy . Just curious what type of router is the one that gets the 30? I only get 18-20 but its pretty consistent.

I have. 30mb line so thats a what I would expect. The main router is. Ubee, I have timewarner so its a internet router as well as a telephone provider. However I think something is wrong with it. Although speeds are fine. Connectivity is off and it will constantly come in and out, I'm also unable to change its settings it has options for 5ghz and 40mhz but every time I try to set it to that it reverts. If I had those options I probably wouldn't need another router.

Wifi on mine is perfect. I just did a speedtest to post a screenshot. I like my G3 however im a huge fan of samsung. I bought this phone cause my note 3 went for a ride in the washer. I was wearing baggy cargo shorts and forgot it was in the side pocket. Still sold it for 150 even though it wouldn't turn on. The Amazon buyer was aware of what happened. I have no complaints with my G3. Still getting the Note 4 though.

I'm getting a much stronger signal at home compared to my N5. Speed even at the edges of my coverage are noticeably faster. Biggest improvement is in the 5 ghz range.

I was at home the other night and did a speed test and it was about half as slow as my Nexus 5 usually was on WiFi. That may have been due to the number of devices connected at that time.
How is everyone's LTE speeds compared to past phones? I feel like this is a lot slower than my Nexus 5. I was getting ~25mbps at home with my Nexus 5, but was barely pushing ~6 last time I tested. Maybe I was having a bad day with T-Mobile.

For me, speed is about the same (full internet speed) as my N5 but the Wifi range is better, especially on the 5 GHZ band. Problem is the range sucks for 5 GHZ on any device so I usually leave it on 2.4. On LTE, I regularly get 30-40 Mbps.

Problem in wifi speed connection on the Galaxy a50

Hi, I have a problem with the connection speed of the wifi. I try to explain, when I turn on the wifi the speed is at maximum, like the other devices, but after 15 or 20 minutes the maximum speed decreases and remains blocked between 40 and 50 Mb/s. If I reboot or shut down and turn on again the wifi returns to full speed like the other devices. I tried to connect to several different connections, I reset the network settings, I reset to factory data with and without backup features, but I always have the same problem. I think that the problem is software otherwise the speed would not become normal every time I turn off and turn on the wireless connection. Can anyone else test to see if it's a common problem? samsung support says that from its analysis the wireless module works and I should leave it in their hands for a few days so that they can test by repeating my attempts. Excuse my English.

Mine is sm-a505FN, but do you have the same values as my screenshot? the block is on 40/50 Mb/s?
My Galaxy A50 SM-A505FN does not have this problem, at a frequency of 5GHz I reach speeds well above 200Mb.
Czech Republic.
Speed differences
I have the SM-A505U A50 from Xfinity. I find on my wifi speed while on the 2.4 I get About 40 Mbps and on the 5G I get 240mbps.
Now on my LG G6 which is over 2 years old I get 90 Mbps on the 2.4 and over 350 on the 5G network. Doesn't seem right to me, does anyone else see this kind of degradation on other phones compared to our A50 ?
My A505G can't even reach 10 Mbps on 5 GHz but on 2.4 GHz I can get full speeds out of my 50/50 fiber. My router is running DD-WRT so I can see actual clients link speed and the A50 is getting really low link speeds to the router. I have other 5 GHz 802.11ac and 802.11n devices getting 50 Mbps and link speeds according to their capacity (my router is broadcasting at 40 MHz so a 1x1 802.11ac client like the A50 should have around 200 Mbps tx/rx rate).
maybe I solved it
For my problem, the different speed in different time would be like a sleep wifi function, sometimes the speed connection come back to the top.
I searched this on the web: "Another important thing is the Wifi sleep policy. Sometimes, you notice that the internet stops in between your activity as the Wifi don’t work. This isn’t networking or any other issue. The problem is caused by Wifi sleep policy which is just like screen saver timing."
PS the official technical assistance didn't find problem on my wireless connection

I know but in my case the TX/RX rates never go higher than 86 mbps which is too low for a 802.11ac client. My other devices also go on PS state but when I run a speedtest it changes from VHT80PS to VHT80 and of course the TX/RX rate goes up to 400 mbps and the speed tests show my real Internet speeds.
No Data connection working in Samsung Galaxy A10 and A50
My brother and cousin have Samsung Galaxy A10 and A 50 respectively. In none of them cellular data works. Can anybody help me with this?
Try another brand of router or upload the latest firmware in the existing one. These problems normally happen, although due to standards, this should not happen.
Sorry, something went wrong with uploading pictures, so I'll try again.
My friend has worse problem with her Galaxy A50.
Intenet speed via Wi-Fi runs around 1Mb to 5 maximum while my Galaxy a50 has about 50 connected to the same access point.
Her husband with his Galaxy a70 has about 50Mb as well.
I tried changing wi-fi settings, full wipe, router restart, everything. Soft (brand) up to date. Nothing helps.
Finally I turned on wi-fi router on my cell and what a surprise- her connection is working fine with it- about 70Mb. On Galaxy A70 same speed. Does anyone know, what's going on??

Question 5G data speeds are terrible, why?

Testing results in garbage speed (consistently less than 7 Mbps down, less than 1 Mbps up, 20-25 ms ping, 6-8 ms jitter). Signal strength is apparently 38% (-111 dBm). I noticed it was bad sometimes when I was actually out and not at home on my WiFi, but I had to use my hotspot for a few hours since they were doing maintenance on the internet here at home, and it was just terrible. So now I have to ask.... what could be making it so slow? Is it just me, or are others suffering from terrible speed as well? Is it my modem? The area I'm in (Sacramento, CA)? Or is it actually on T-Mobile's end?
Just ran a few Speedtest app 5g tests in Southern Nevada...

I'm on EU firmware with T-Mobile network in Texas, and speeds are kinda all over but consistently fast. Odd that it used LTE for most of my tests instead of 5G though.
I'm not sure if it's always just been "bleh" speeds for 5G here or not, but seeing as how this is the first 5G device I've owned, it's hard to say if it's on my end or theirs.
Nope, must be something on my end. Their map says my area has "5G Ultra Capacity" so that can't be the issue.

Might just be your testing locations. 5g actually performs poorly in home environment for me, about the same as lte for speed but less reliable. I'd check open network maps to determine if you're actually close to a 5g cell tower (not relying on carrier provided maps that tend to skew positively for them), and if so, check if you get better signal outside. If you are close to a tower, get decent speeds outside, but not inside, then getting a signal booster for faster mobile speeds indoor would be needed.
It is definitely testing location. When I test at home, the speed is slower than 4g by a lot. When I test at work in NYC I have mind blowing speeds. Faster than my IPS at home.

Are they consistently like that? The results I mentioned above were at home. But I tested again yesterday while I was out, at a grocery store just down the street a few blocks, and I got 19.9 up/ 3.98 down (which is better, but still pretty sad).

I wouldn't be able to tell you honestly because I do not live in NYC. I commute there for work. I have one ran speed test there 2 times and both times I had blazing fast speed like that. Over at my house, the 5g is poor and I only use 4g.
@GuyInDogSuit I've been having the same issues lately. Not sure what's been going on. T-Mobile OP9P converted to DA firmware, using Family Mobile SIM connected using T-Mobile APN.
Was surprised to get these results today. Went to download an app update using mobile data, realized it downloaded in two seconds, so I figured I'd speed test it. I live in ****ty Ohio lol.

Holy mackerel!!
Anyway, to update on this.... It would seem it is definitely something in the area, and not just the 5G. I tested the LTE on my tablet and got piss-poor results on that as well. 9.89 down, 0.07 up. Yikes.
They're fine here
I was all over the place today, in at least two different counties, and tested several times. The speeds weren't spectacular, but they were still much better than the sadness I get at home. I should look into some ways to improve that, especially since it will be my only source of internet for a few days next week.
