With the latest #uncarrier announcement, T-Mobile phones, that support wifi calling, are supposed to get free SMS texting while on Gogo airplane wifi networks.
See here:
http://www.t-mobile.com/offer/free-in-flight-wifi-texting-uncarrier.html
Per this site, Samsung Galaxy S4 - Software version: M919UVUFNH7 would be compatible. That's the latest Kitkat available on the S4 through T-Mobile.
I was on a flight this past weekend but was not able to get it to run. I do have NH7 as my modem, but I'm still running a 4.4.2 custom ROM. I thought my bootloader was updated to NH7 but apparently it was still on NB4. Not sure if that makes a difference. I didn't futz around with it too much, I only tried it once using chomp and not the Samsung built-in SMS app.
Anyone know what the specific requirements are for the free wifi texting on Gogo, baseband/software-wise? Or if you've had it work, what are you running?

Last year I flew to Alaska from Fla, and used GoGo on Delta. You probably already know, but that is the slowest damn internet Ive ever experienced in my life. But anyways, youd have to use the stock mms app and have the stock dialer, contacts and phone installed as well. Meaning no i9505 versions. Their all tied together when it comes to wifi calling/texting. 3rd party apps wouldnt work either.
Flash the firmware to get nh7 bootloader and everything else nh7 which I suggest doing to avoid stoopid issues
Ahh, so the trick is to use the stock MMS app then. Next time, will try it more fully. Updated to NH7 fully also.
I was more curious as to the requirements for using the free-service, as without paying for the full gogo, I'm sure they block everything except for the T-Mobile messaging ports.

Within the last couple of weeks, I have to enable/disable airplane mode to get my data to work. It's random throughout the day. I've checked to make sure mobile data is enabled when it's not working, and it is. It shows 4G at the top, but just won't send/receive data. I wasn't having this problem when I first upgraded to JB, so I'm not sure what's going one. Anybody have similar problems/tips?

Are you running a ROM other than stock? There have been hiccups similar to this on some AOSP ROMs, but I can't immediately think of anything that would be causing this on a (mostly?) stock ROM.

Sorry, I meant to stay I'm completely stock in the OP.
common issue with note II and my GSIII
looks like the same issue is happening on the Note II - thread.
For me, it seems like it happens more frequently when I leave a wifi connection; I have to enable airplane mode & disable it to connect to 4G LTE (band 14). I'm not rooted, so I can't run the logger that's suggested in the Note II thread. FWIW: it appears to affect me with or without Onavo VPN running.
Any suggestions would be helpful. My next thought is to figure out a way to ping/test the connection to the AT&T tower/gateway next time I run into the issue before using the airplane mode fix.
my GSIII config:
AT&T version
Jelly Bean 4.1.1 Stock (Samsung) ROM
Kernel 3.0.31-274808
Baseband I747UCDLK3
Does anyone know if T-Mobile WiFi calling can be enabled on the vanilla Android S4 when it comes out. I was wondering if it is technically possible.
This is the only thing that's holding me from getting the stock Android S4 (when it comes out) instead of the T-Mobile S4.
From what I've read, the nexus 4 from Google doesn't support it, so I assume the dev version s4 would be the same since it is a T-Mobile feature. I also believe a lot, if not all, roms does not support this feature. I could be wrong, so someone with more experience pls chime in.

If you really value WiFi calling (and I assume you are with T-Mobile now), I don't even know why you don't just go ahead
and buy the T-Mobile S4. There is almost zero advantage the AOSP S4 will have over T-Mo S4.
Maybe you didn't want to root your phone, but then I figure, WiFi probably will not be included on the AOSP version,
and even if there was a way, you would need to root the phone regardless to flash the ROM/MOD.
In the end, I really see the T-Mo S4 as your best bet, as I can guarantee 99% you can flash AOSP ROM with all its features
more easily to a T-Mo S4 than to flash the WiFi calling feature unto an AOSP S4.
I currently have the Nexus S on T-Mobile. My two key features are Wi-Fi Calling and Wi-Fi Hotspot / Tethering. Hotspot/Tethering works great on the Nexus S, and there is no extra charge for it.
Wi-Fi Calling has never been provided for the Nexus S, and nobody has been able to figure out how to add it, so I'm thinking about upgrading to the GS4.
I see two approaches to meet my needs:
1) Buy the T-Mobile version, but have to root it and maybe load new ROMs to eliminate the unwanted carrier apps etc. I'm assuming T-Mobile would not directly offer free tethering like the Nexus S on their phone. I'm aware various apps promise to enable this, but I'm not sure about how well they work. Also, would loading alternate ROMs then cause the Wi-Fi calling capability to be lost?
2) Buy the Google developer version of the GS4. It presumably provides tethering like the Nexus S, but wouldn't have the Wi-Fi calling. Will that be impossible to add later as it was with the Nexus S, or is the GS4 Google version close enough to the T-Mobile version that somebody could port the app?
Advice or suggestions?
Devs have been trying to get WiFi calling going for quite some time. It's closed source and tied into T-Mobile somehow. I know its very complicated. It sucks because I'm used to aosp ROMs but I can't give up WiFi calling because my service is so terrible at home/work.
I know developers are still working on it. If they can get the sensors, ir blaster, and WiFi calling on AOSP I'll never look back. Given the fact that the Nexus GS4 will be Vanilla Android I'm almost positive carrier apps won't be installed. If they don't have the sensors working it'll be a downgrade from tw in my opinion.

The problem with porting WiFi calling to non stock ROMS is that the APK requires all sorts of libs to be installed with it.
It's been done before though. CM7 and CM9 releases for various devices had WiFi calling once the lib situation was figured out. And it worked great.
For other devices it was a matter of pulling the APK and the associated libs from a stock rom, keeping everything to still be recognized as though it was installed on the stock ROM, and putting it into a CM rom.
It was accomplished before. I'd be shocked if it doesn't get accomplished again.
XDA Devs are smarter than Carrier Devs!
I love Infamous Rom. Im still on Verison 5, and it works flawlessly, The problem is, I really want to use this galaxy gear watch I got. But I need an unlocked phone for my AppRadio, and I need wifi calling because I dont get reception/texts/data in the office.
Does anyone know of a 4.3 rom that has wifi tmobile calling, to use until Infamous uses the 4.3 ROM? Thanks!

I don't believe there is a 4.3 ROM with Wifi calling yet.
A rom with Wifi calling has to be based on a T Mobile release. As of today T Mobile hasnt' released a 4.3 ROM for the S4.
It's expected very soon (Like next week I think...), and you'll see modified T Mobile roms very shortly after that. But as of today, you're out of luck.
There are plenty of 4.2 roms with Wifi calling working. I have no idea if they can be modded to work with the watch.
You could give this one a try

there will not be a stable 4.3 rom with wifi calling until the official update is rolled out, which is supposedly the 18th of this month
The leak posted above has what u want. I would reccomend to wait ~5 more days for the official rom though. Soon..
can't wait
so looking forward to 4.3 coming to tmobile so i can get wifi calling again
I started using ILWT's CM7 rom not really knowing what I was getting into. It works great but 80% of my life is outside of cell range and I rely heavily on wifi calling.
The stock G2 wifi calling app no longer works (which apparently everyone knows). I tried using tmobile's crappy Tmobile bobsled app which was a waste of time.
How do I get my wifi calling/texting back? preferably one that uses my phone number like the stock one did. I've searched around seen people refering to links in their signatures that are no longer there but nothing else.
Please help, I'd rather not go back to stock but will if I have to.

CM7.2 has wifi calling as does a some of the sense 2.1 and sense 3.0. There is a version out there for ICS (I use it all the time), but there is no wifi calling for JB.
What I will do is go back and look on my archive of info and see if I can find a wifi calling add-on that works with ILWT

**UPDATE** added the file I have might work.
THIS THREAD IS FOR GENERAL DISCUSSION OF THE TMOBILE NF9 FIRMWARE UPDATE
Everyone have their phones right where they want them after the last two firmware updates? ...
Tough, NF9 is available for download at Sammobile and it looks like there's some nice features, seamless switching between wifi calling and regular calls, Volte switching and more.
Break out Odin, chainfire root and everything all over again.
(If you have s5, or s4, i noticed they have updates as well)
ANNOUNCEMENT
If you need the individual files for upgrade, @toastido has worked hard to get everything together for you HERE
If you're looking for the easiest way to upgrade your firmware and have a deodexed, zipaligned stock ROM for the new firmware with all the bells and whistles, and debloated, @effortless has you taken care of... HERE you will find the effortless guide to upgrade the firmware to NF9, and HERE you will find the Effortless ROM updated to NF9.
Lets upgrade our Note 3's again...for the third time... in just a couple months.
I see this question come up every time theres an upgrade, so...
YES! You can use the previous methods of root and recovery with this firmware.
If you need it:
I odin over TWRP from HERE
and then drop into recovery and flash the latest SuperSU by @Chainfire from HERE
But, if you need to know how root NF9, @effortless has you taken care of HERE, and it is also discussed later in this thread. Thanks to @Vegasden for the link to effortless root for NF9.
I'm working on it now. Going to open a new thread with the firmware extracted into its parts as I have done for the past 3.
I only updated to NF4 three days ago and I will wait a week or two to do the same with NF9 especially if there isn't much in it
Just finished the update, baseband and firmware are now nf9 but pda and csc are nf4 because i restored my bobcat nandroid. Hopefully bobcat updates soon. I know @effortless is working on it.

The ability to smoothly transition between wifi and 4G calls without drops was enough for me. The whole reason I never used wifi calls is because I would be in the house or the office talking to a customer, walk out the door and get down the road on a wifi call and lose it.

Is this confirmed...? It looks like T-Mobile wouldn't say anything more than "Wifi calling enhancement", and I don't see other sources posting this as a change.

I have been playing with it and it's a little touchy but i switched between Wifi and lte earlier on a call. You have to set up smart network switch and some other details. S4 seems to have gotten the most noticeable changes in its UI for this round of firmware updates.
The S4 got updated to 4.4.4 with NH7.
Is NF9 still 4.4.2?
NM... just saw a screenshot in Effortless' post.
Still 4.4.2

Yes still 4.4.2, and my s5 is still 4.4.2. I'm a little ticked about that. The phone i gave my daughter gets the latest rom. Lol
Update. The wifi switching i saw was a fluke. I was on a call, switched wifi on and got the wifi call signal in my status bar. Turned off wifi and everything stayed connected. Tried a call initiated from wifi calling and turned wifi off and got a message asking if i wanted to find another network to keep the call, and it showed my call was gone. BUT, the call didn't hang up on the other phone, it showed connected. Any thoughts anyone?

Well i don't think it was designed to have people flipping wifi on and off to see if it keeps a call.
Try turning wifi calling on and leave it on and see if it drops a call when you are in and out of range of your router.
No i haven't tried it out yet but i do want to try out the personal cellspot....

Tried that too. Walked out of range of my router, five houses away, and it asked again. I will play with it some more this evening when i get home. Right now I'm not in a wifi area, plus I need to switch back to NF9 rom as I'm currently on nf4 bobcat rom.
Were you on LTE at the time? According to the Q&A they did at the event, you have to be on VoLTE for the seemless wifi handoff to work properly. I also wonder if their router is needed, but I wouldn't think so as it's mostly QoS changes on a normal WiFi router.

Pretty sure you have to be on NF9 stock for this stuff to work properly. The WiFi calling features and VoLTE features are baked into the stock rom, and when updated to NF9 they likely got updated. If you're running an NF4 base, it's highly likely it doesn't include the NF9 updates.
I agree with toastido, you have to have the NF9 stock for it to work. Also, I wonder, if it's not all going to work everywhere at this point. September 17/18 was mentioned a lot in their press release. So it might not be an immediate rollout. And, no, you don't have to use their router.

Oh no, misunderstanding. I'm on nf9 base. Have full nf9 on my phone. Just switch back to my nf4 rom for use during the day because i can't stand stock rom. All my testing and experimenting is on full nf9 base and stock rooted rom. Just switch back and forth between backups.
Later this evening in taking my other note 3 and stripping it down and doing nf9 on it and it will be my experimental nf9 toy and keep my daily on nf9/nf4.
I called my wife and walked away from my home wifi and lost the call when transferring from wifi to network. Walking back using network it was seamless to wifi and the call didn't drop so i don't know if that will happen all the time or not.
Sounds like my experience. I switched my phone back to full nf9 again and I'll be on it for experimenting purposes and such.... damn I forgot how ugly stock can be
