NF9 tmobile firmware update discussion - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

THIS THREAD IS FOR GENERAL DISCUSSION OF THE TMOBILE NF9 FIRMWARE UPDATE
Everyone have their phones right where they want them after the last two firmware updates? ...
Tough, NF9 is available for download at Sammobile and it looks like there's some nice features, seamless switching between wifi calling and regular calls, Volte switching and more.
Break out Odin, chainfire root and everything all over again.
(If you have s5, or s4, i noticed they have updates as well)
ANNOUNCEMENT
If you need the individual files for upgrade, @toastido has worked hard to get everything together for you HERE
If you're looking for the easiest way to upgrade your firmware and have a deodexed, zipaligned stock ROM for the new firmware with all the bells and whistles, and debloated, @effortless has you taken care of... HERE you will find the effortless guide to upgrade the firmware to NF9, and HERE you will find the Effortless ROM updated to NF9.
Lets upgrade our Note 3's again...for the third time... in just a couple months.
I see this question come up every time theres an upgrade, so...
YES! You can use the previous methods of root and recovery with this firmware.
If you need it:
I odin over TWRP from HERE
and then drop into recovery and flash the latest SuperSU by @Chainfire from HERE
But, if you need to know how root NF9, @effortless has you taken care of HERE, and it is also discussed later in this thread. Thanks to @Vegasden for the link to effortless root for NF9.

I'm working on it now. Going to open a new thread with the firmware extracted into its parts as I have done for the past 3.

I only updated to NF4 three days ago and I will wait a week or two to do the same with NF9 especially if there isn't much in it

Just finished the update, baseband and firmware are now nf9 but pda and csc are nf4 because i restored my bobcat nandroid. Hopefully bobcat updates soon. I know @effortless is working on it.

The ability to smoothly transition between wifi and 4G calls without drops was enough for me. The whole reason I never used wifi calls is because I would be in the house or the office talking to a customer, walk out the door and get down the road on a wifi call and lose it.

Is this confirmed...? It looks like T-Mobile wouldn't say anything more than "Wifi calling enhancement", and I don't see other sources posting this as a change.

I have been playing with it and it's a little touchy but i switched between Wifi and lte earlier on a call. You have to set up smart network switch and some other details. S4 seems to have gotten the most noticeable changes in its UI for this round of firmware updates.

The S4 got updated to 4.4.4 with NH7.
Is NF9 still 4.4.2?
NM... just saw a screenshot in Effortless' post.
Still 4.4.2

Yes still 4.4.2, and my s5 is still 4.4.2. I'm a little ticked about that. The phone i gave my daughter gets the latest rom. Lol

Update. The wifi switching i saw was a fluke. I was on a call, switched wifi on and got the wifi call signal in my status bar. Turned off wifi and everything stayed connected. Tried a call initiated from wifi calling and turned wifi off and got a message asking if i wanted to find another network to keep the call, and it showed my call was gone. BUT, the call didn't hang up on the other phone, it showed connected. Any thoughts anyone?

Well i don't think it was designed to have people flipping wifi on and off to see if it keeps a call.
Try turning wifi calling on and leave it on and see if it drops a call when you are in and out of range of your router.
No i haven't tried it out yet but i do want to try out the personal cellspot....

Tried that too. Walked out of range of my router, five houses away, and it asked again. I will play with it some more this evening when i get home. Right now I'm not in a wifi area, plus I need to switch back to NF9 rom as I'm currently on nf4 bobcat rom.

Were you on LTE at the time? According to the Q&A they did at the event, you have to be on VoLTE for the seemless wifi handoff to work properly. I also wonder if their router is needed, but I wouldn't think so as it's mostly QoS changes on a normal WiFi router.

Pretty sure you have to be on NF9 stock for this stuff to work properly. The WiFi calling features and VoLTE features are baked into the stock rom, and when updated to NF9 they likely got updated. If you're running an NF4 base, it's highly likely it doesn't include the NF9 updates.

I agree with toastido, you have to have the NF9 stock for it to work. Also, I wonder, if it's not all going to work everywhere at this point. September 17/18 was mentioned a lot in their press release. So it might not be an immediate rollout. And, no, you don't have to use their router.

Oh no, misunderstanding. I'm on nf9 base. Have full nf9 on my phone. Just switch back to my nf4 rom for use during the day because i can't stand stock rom. All my testing and experimenting is on full nf9 base and stock rooted rom. Just switch back and forth between backups.
Later this evening in taking my other note 3 and stripping it down and doing nf9 on it and it will be my experimental nf9 toy and keep my daily on nf9/nf4.

I called my wife and walked away from my home wifi and lost the call when transferring from wifi to network. Walking back using network it was seamless to wifi and the call didn't drop so i don't know if that will happen all the time or not.

Sounds like my experience. I switched my phone back to full nf9 again and I'll be on it for experimenting purposes and such.... damn I forgot how ugly stock can be

Mobile data randomly not working...

Within the last couple of weeks, I have to enable/disable airplane mode to get my data to work. It's random throughout the day. I've checked to make sure mobile data is enabled when it's not working, and it is. It shows 4G at the top, but just won't send/receive data. I wasn't having this problem when I first upgraded to JB, so I'm not sure what's going one. Anybody have similar problems/tips?

Are you running a ROM other than stock? There have been hiccups similar to this on some AOSP ROMs, but I can't immediately think of anything that would be causing this on a (mostly?) stock ROM.

Sorry, I meant to stay I'm completely stock in the OP.
common issue with note II and my GSIII
looks like the same issue is happening on the Note II - thread.
For me, it seems like it happens more frequently when I leave a wifi connection; I have to enable airplane mode & disable it to connect to 4G LTE (band 14). I'm not rooted, so I can't run the logger that's suggested in the Note II thread. FWIW: it appears to affect me with or without Onavo VPN running.
Any suggestions would be helpful. My next thought is to figure out a way to ping/test the connection to the AT&T tower/gateway next time I run into the issue before using the airplane mode fix.
my GSIII config:
AT&T version
Jelly Bean 4.1.1 Stock (Samsung) ROM
Kernel 3.0.31-274808
Baseband I747UCDLK3

Kitkat Update = Wifi Calling/Radio Issues

I posted about this briefly on the T-Mo forums, looks like I'm not the only one who is having some issues with Kitkat. Mainly, sometimes when you leave Wifi you will lose all radio signal until a reboot. Also, on Wifi Calling, usually after 20 minutes or so you can send text messages just fine but you won't receive them until you reboot.
Just want to warn anyone who is looking to update their bootloader like I did and now can't go back to the fully functional 4.3. I'm completely reliant on Wifi calling where I am so this is a bad situation.
I've also heard there are some battery drain issues in 4.4.2 with the Note 3.
no problem here if not i get better lte signal b4 i only get one 1 bar at my work now i get 3

Yeah, the signal is a little better in some areas, but I'm not sure if that's just the way the signal is displayed or if there was actually something done to improve the signal, I tend to think it's the first option.
These are mostly issues related to Wifi calling, just wanted to warn people who are reliant on it like me.

How did you take the update? If you're not concerned with knox flags I really suggest backup apps etc and use philz or twrp....wipe that thing till it bleeds haha...i like to follow wipes with a reboot back into revovery....(also tapping No to any requests to add root) then flash the stock deodexed or odexed if you must lol....I've not had a single hangup. ....then after loading rom set everything up and proceed to remove bloat from [system/app] AND [data/app] ....reboot....profit.
Let me add I've had my note for about 2 weeks with stock 4.3 no root nada...straight from t-mo and had about 12-15 random reboots....After update (1st took ota then said f*÷! it and rooted and slapped custom recov on him then wiped everything except external sd and flashed stock zip) Not 1 reboot ! since what...Wednesday .....wifi calling 100 %....best of luck

Yes, tried multiple fresh installs/re-downloads.
I Odin'd the 4.4.2 update, rooted, flashed philz recovery, then wiped and installed the de-odexed from that thread over in development. It isn't an issue with the roms, it's definitely the update itself, people over on the T-Mo forums are having the same issues. Hopefully it gets worked out.

My wife and I have Note 3s, both still on 4.3, rooted only otherwise stock rom and we are having this problem. We've had our phones since launch and this problem only started happening a couple of weeks ago. I definitely do not think it's an OS update problem.

Data Cut Outs

I'm having strange data cut outs. The signal still says LTE, H+ or H with bars but web pages stop loading. I have to turn airplane mode on and off for data to come back. This is happening to me on both Danvdh and VirginROM and I'm running the NB4 radio. Anyone have any ideas on what's going on?
As a side note, I just got this GS4 replacement a few weeks ago. I installed DANVDH without even booting the phone into stock Touchwiz once. Everytime I turn the phone on it says on the top left corner in red letters KERNEL IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING and in yellow it says SET WARRANTY BIT: KERNEL
Got no idea what that means. Never saw it on my last GS4.

Would you happen to know where I can find the NB4 modem? I'm googling all over the place and can't find it for the 4.3 knox bootloader my phone has.
Just an FYI your not the only one experiencing this. I am too, BRONX NY. The data icon will be there saying i have connection but it wont connect. Airplane mode always does the trick but thats pretty annoying to do. I am not sure whats causing this but ive reflash NB4 modem before and I have also reflashed the entire NB4 tar.

You've already tripped KNOX so, from what I was told, its fine to flash the NB4 for the non-KNOX bootloader.
That being said, while my signal increased with the NB4 modem, I too am having the random drops :/
I'm somewhat tempted to return to stock, unroot, and take all the upgrades to get matching bootloaders, modems, etc., and then reroot and restore my ROM backup.

I am experiencing this issue as well.
I'm on bootloader and modem/baseband NB4.
I'm not getting random data drop-outs (maybe only occasionally), but there are spots around town that my signal becomes absolutely unuseable and I can't make phone calls or anything.
Airplane mode doesn't reset the connection properly either.
I'm using the M919 on AT&T, "phone" APN. I've tried the "pta" APN and it doesn't work any better, maybe a little worse.
Any help with this would be great.

Turns out this isn't happening to just us.
http://www.tmonews.com/2014/07/t-mobile-lte-network-stalling-or-dropping-out-youre-not-alone/
This doesn't seem applicable to my situation at least - I'm on the AT&T network.
I'm using the M919 unlocked and while at work (which sits RIGHT next to an AT&T tower) I'm getting easily -60 to -80 dbm signal. I can make calls and everything perfectly fine with no drop-outs on LTE.
I go home and suddenly its -98 to -116 and while my LTE data is still working and I receive texts/voicemail, I cannot make or receive calls. My wife, on an iPhone has solid signal and can make/receive phone calls.
It seems that either the M919 is not as strongly compatible with AT&T's frequencies or that something is wrong with the phone.
I've tested this on 100% stock NB4 4.4.2 with stock recovery/bootloader/modem/etc.
I've also tested this on numerous AOSP/GPE roms and same result.
I've tried MK2 modem and it doesn't help either.
I know this is isolated to the M919 because my previous phone was an HTC One M7 and it worked fine at home and at work, both stock and AOSP.
I'm almost to the point of trying to odin flash an i337 AT&T NB4 modem on this phone to see if there's any relief, but I'm still wary of bricking it.

[Q] update modem/firmware/kernel to fix data issues?

Since I started working full time in my new career I haven't had time to keep up with the changes. Can I get someone in the know to help me out with this?
I remember reading that KitKat was known to have data issues. I have the following:
T-Mobile model SM-N900T
4.4.2
N900TUVUCNB4
custom kernel: 3.4.84-leanKrnerl-hlte-2.2 (don't remember name, got it here)
stock rom modified
Problem is every once in a while I lose data connection even though it shows a 4G icon and several bars of service. I even had T-Mobile send me the signal booster, which is installed at my home and seems to be working, but same issue continues to happen. And if I turn on WiFi at that point, WiFi connects, but 4G icon doesn't go away, and I stay without data access even though I'm supposedly connected to WiFi.
As you can imagine, this is annoying. It happens at least once a day, sometimes multiple times. Then it goes back to normal.
I don't have the time to update fully to a new rom with new firmware and have to reinstall everything. Is there new modem/radio/firmware/kernel I can install over my existing installation and expect to see this issue go away? Or am I stuck with this until I change phones?
Thanks for your patience and helping me out with this.
Unfortunately its a common issue and there is no fix for it.
quick fix it to out your phone in airplane mode then out of it
Thanks, although that sucks to hear. Of all my Samsung devices (see sig + smart tv, blu-ray, sound bar, tablets) the Note III has by far been the buggiest. Both my wife and I have had buggy experiences and I'm rooted and she's fully stock. Not nearly as happy with this Note III as I was with the Note II, that's for sure.
Once again, thanks for taking the time to answer.

I too had network issues. My 4G would slow to a crawl or would become non responsive. It would take a reboot or airplane mode toggle to make 4G work for about an hour before it goes bad again.
I updated to the latest NF4 firmware and it has been running for the past 48 hours with no issues.
Speed is not much of an improvement. I get around 30mbps /22mbps in NYC. But data stability has increased to a great extent. I do get the occasional hiccups with data , but it resolves itself in about 10-15 seconds.
Hope this helps you
Rooted Note 3 with stock NF4 firmware / debloated
Updated to nf4 before bed last night so it's only been half a day but will post result later tonight when I get home where I usually experience this data issue to see if the new firmware makes a difference.
Update: so far so good. I've been home for several hours now and haven't gotten any data issues.
OK spoke to soon. 10 minutes after I posted my data stopped working. Had to toggle airplane mode.

LG G3 back to JellyBean

This may have been posted, If so, sorry, I could not find it.
Now that that I have installed the T-mo Lollipoop update, my phone is a paperweight. As I don't suppose T-mo will replace it....
Is there anyway to roll the LG-G3 back to KitKat or whatever version it was on WHEN IT WORKED PERFECTLY?
Any help would be appreciated, it is useless as it is.

I ask this when fixing computers, why is it a paper weight lol.. whats wrong with the phone ? we need moar nfo ...
Paperweight
No or Spotty Wi/Fi
Cell signal has almost vanished (it I stand next to a T-mo tower I can get 5 bars for a minute)
Cell signal keeps dropping so the phone is constantly searching for a signal
Due to constantly searching for signals, the battery drain is actually watchable on the notification screen, about 1% a minute.
Phone will not stay connected long enough to complete a call.
All of these Issues happened after Lollipoop.
Hence, is there a way do "Upgrade" it back to Kit Kat.
I could not find anything on her about it. I did find a video on Youtube, but it was for a Verizon unit, not sure if it would be the same or not
I have two phones, same issue on both phones.

Unfortunately from my experiences and other people's experiences downgrading to Kitkat after Lollipop with data issues, you will still have those data issues when you go back to Kitkat. It seems going back to Kitkat via KDZ or TOT does not restore the modem or it does but the modem still does not function correctly. The only way to fix LTE and data issues was to flash Blisspop 2.3 and determining that data sticks on that rom. If it does, your data and modem issues should be resolved and you can use stock lollipop again. If you want to try this route here is my thread on how to fix it. Make sure you are rooted with twrp

Once I do that I will lose WiFi calling won't I?
It is my understanding once you over write T-mo's Rom you lose that.

Yes and No flashing blisspop rom will just fixed your data and LTE issues, I'm not telling you to keep the rom, that is entirely up to you. Yes keeping custom roms that are not stock will lose wifi calling and all the tmobile stuff. After you can confirm that LTE and data works you can then flash back to stock or restore to stock. That way you can still have Wifi calling and have a stock rom.
