Note 4 getting very hot, while loading apps!!! - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good day All,
I was very excited in getting my new Note 4. Moving from my old S3 to this was so great.
I was running the Note 4 and loading apps, etc was feeling hot and got a warning pop up stating it was shutting down apps due to heat. Went to sleep next morning the Note 4 was cool and has been good and no more excessive heat. Maybe it was from loading the apps I did use the WiFi for downloading my apps.
Just wondered if anyone else noticed I hope updates which are very slow on big red or root will solve this in time.

I wouldn't be too worried. I think it's the same principle where phones get hot when they switch from dalvik to art (btw, don't do this on the note 4) Getting mine soon, so I'll see if I have the same problem.

Sounds good, enjoy

When I first was setting mine up and downloading 200 apps, I had the download booster on and it gave me warning that it was disabling download booster due to overheating. It didnt shut down the whole phone though. I think the radios in these Note 4s might be too good. They are pulling some serious bandwidth down, and inside a small mobile device like this, heat build up can be an issue. I havent seen any problems in normal usage though.

Yea I switched to ART it clears dalvik cache every reboot and just seems to generally slow the device down

Isn't there a fairly significant performance advantage to ART on the Note 4? I tried it and it seems quite quick but could just be the new processor, big problem though I keep getting "Android is upgrading" on every reboot, it's doing it for 104 apps right now.

Yes mine was the same when I was playing around with the multi-windows, I opened 5 all at once, camera being one of them and I notice that the screen was really hot. I do have a Spigen Ultra case on maybe that didn't help.

s6 edge, fast at first, laggy after a few days

Is anyone having this issue, I only installed a few apps and widgets, nothing big and now when I click my phone app, it takes almost 2 seconds before the dial pad shows up, same with messages, o was hoping this phone would be the first not to have this issue but it seems like it's an android thing, I deleted most of my apps and still it's slow, which sucks because my wife's iPhone always loads apps quick, I just factory reset and now it's back to being quick but I feel like I can't download my important apps because the more I add the slower it gets
Yup. I'm definitely getting lag. Lots of it to be honest. I'm trying to overlook it, but it's gotten pretty bad today, especially while updating Google play apps in the background.
It's also getting extremely hot on the back, specifically the rear middle, towards the right side.
not much lag to complain but yes I am also facing those heating issues..
I was first told that all phones get hot if you use them while charging but then it has happened thrice now even when I am not charging it.
The heat is pretty bad right at the end of your right thumb..
My S6 was fast the first few days then starting lagging opening hangouts and G+. I closed my open apps and helped a little. I installed clean master and it's back being fast. I have no heat issues.
This supposed to be the fatest phone but it has more lag compared tomy other phone Moto x 2015 amd Htc M8 . unbelievable
Obviously something is making lag that should be able to fix considering it didn't lag out of the box. Or am I wrong? I think I saw that a factory reset fixes it. I might try it at some point but doesn't bother me that much.

then something isn't right, because there is zero lag on this phone..
My S6 just all of a sudden started lagging really bad. Like I had the issue where I would take a picture and would want to check it out and click the gallery app. Man that took like a good few seconds, and it was bothering me really bad. So I decided to do a master reset, and then deal with the bs that the stock messenger would not restore messages from a back up that was done 4 hours before the reset. So yet again this phone is lagging really bad. It is rooted with Nova, and for whatever reasons apps open up slow, they switch slow, and I am irritated that my 2yr old M7 worked faster then this. I have done the developer scale back options as well as Greenify and Debloater and the lag is just unbearable on this new 2015 phone. I have a possibly 70 apps, and I am just wondering what you all have done to circumvent the lag.

[Q] Overheating 🔥?

I just got my Samsung Galaxy s6 edge white 32gb last night and I noticed that is over heating than it should be. I'm using it for Web browser and texting nothing that should cause to heat up. I also updated to the latest version.

Actually if it was overheating then the phone would automatically shut down to prevent damage, but yes the phone does get hot rather quickly. But I've had glass and aluminum phones before and they always get hot fast since metal retains heat.
Mine ran a lot hotter than a normal glass and metal phone, and it was laggy/jerky. I flashed the stock firmware to it, and now it's smooth and cool.
Here's How:

yes it does get hot once in every 3-4 days & when I say it means really hot..

Smart switch is not working for everyone. Hit or a miss thing.
My phone heats up to 44 C
What is the Warning Level is it safe till 45 or 50 Celsius ?
It happens when
1) On use of Google Maps while driving
2) Charging
3) When i use Sandisk OTG, to the extent that it stop the Transfer & freezes
4) Even if i Record Videos sometimes
5) While wireless charging
This is really bad Never had such a Issue
I agree with some of the sentiments here that the device can seemingly get pretty warm - especially when I tweaking things or using apps that use a lot of CPU or using the camera for too long. But I do believe a lot of it is related to the aluminum/glass case - I believe Samsung is basically taking advantage of the case as a though it were a heatsink - releasing all the heat into your hand/pocket/air.
This is truly the first phone i've had that manages to stay under 100° F even when cpu frequency is locked to the maximum and I'm playing very gpu-intensive games, provided that i'm not charging the battery and the phone is not in an unusually warm environmnt like a hot car. I should mention that i'm rooted and lots of preloaded software has been removed. I would download some sort of process monitor and check it to see if there's a misbehaving app to blame if this is happening regularly.

Hey,
I saw that you posted a solution when someone had problems with his S6 edge overheating. I've an S6 and I think I might have the same problem.
I was wondering if you could spare some time to help me. I posted my problem here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/help/help-s6-cpu-getting-hot-t3180011
I used Antatu benchmark and CPU temperature to test my phone and it got to 84.0 C twice, once when it was testing my CPU to it's fullest and once when it was testing game performance.
So I was wondering if you could run the test as well and tell me what temperature you got so I can compare. Thanks
I haven't tried your method yet but I will tomorrow.

For the record, mine just hit 85C while running AnTuTu. As far as daily use, it made a world of difference on my phone when I flashed the stock firmware the first time. The phone was terribly hot in my pocket when I was not doing anything, and it was SUPER laggy when I was. Not something I expected from this phone. After the flash, it was a Beast and ran MUCH cooler. It would get warm still when doing intensive tasks, but that would be expected from an Octa-core phone in my opinion. It does not get uncomfortably hot anymore, like it used to though. I would imagine it went WAY above 85C when it got hot before, because it was actually hard to hold at times.
If you have not flashed it since new, I would highly recommend it. I know it's a pain, but it's a one time thing that you never have to do again, and the benefit MIGHT be large. No guarantees, as you may not have the same issue, but I've received a lot of reports from people who have done it and they say it breathed new life into their phones. For me personally, it was DEFINITELY not a placebo affect. It was night and day.
With all that said, I've got my S6 Edge up for sale right now as I've moved to Apple for a little while. I continually jump around, and T-Mobile offered the iPhone 6 for $15/mo and I can trade it in 3 times in the next 18 months for free and keep paying $15/mo for the newest phone. I'm looking forward to seeing the difference in the iPhone 6s. If it sucks, I'll be trading it in shortly for another Android phone.
PS: AnTuTu final score: 69314!!!! Wow!!!
One more thing. To eliminate ALL lag and slowdown, I replaced the Samsung Launcher with the Google Launcher. What a difference that alone makes! Seriously, try that one thing. It's huge. The Samsung Launcher has some issue somewhere that they still need to address.

It should. As long as Smart Switch can recognize your phone model and download the Correct Firmware, the Flash WILL help the Heating and Lagging problem. If your phone is not recognized, then Smart Switch will not do anything. It's worth a try.
For me it happens especially when im playing arround with that samsung theme store build in app. I don't know why that app needs so much power to have that effect on the phone but for sure its something samsung needs to look at.
For sure they need to re-design that app from the scratch. Its like the "my first homepage" of theme apps.

Overheating --> Network/Device Lag? Marshmallow, M9

I know my way around Android well enough I could probably teach a class. I've been excited for the Marshmallow update for my Verizon M9, mostly for the security update. Now I've got it, and udderly hate it. Not only is this marshmallow über soft and squishy, it's somehow managed to swallow the majority of my CPU--much like BOB from Monsters vs Aliens. Actually, the update is more like BOB than a delicious couple of calories. Tremendous lag from god knows where, constant freezing and other **** when in hpm--whether it be plugged in or not--which often crashes apps altogether or causes a reboot, keyboard latency of about 1.5seconds, network disconnecting when the device exceeds 120℉, ooh!, and the cherry on top: loss of data. I use my phone for both business/class-related stuff and for gaming/pleasure(shh, creeps) because I'm too broke to buy anything else. The front-facing speakers get glitcy and doing that pausing crap like when you drive outta radio range in a car. This was never a problem with Lollipop, but is making Android a living hell to deal with. MHL has yet to work on Marshmallow, and instead simply crashes the phone. Again. Can't find ANYthing ANYwhere about this. Both Verizon and HTC are refusing to talk to me directly about it; keep getting passed to the next rep, who tries to put me through their template of troubleshooting steps. Wiping cache partition worked...for all of ten minutes. If that. HTC wants to take my phone for two weeks, which won't work due to classes.
Full stock M9. I use App Mgr III for new moving apps quickly, App Cache Cleaner because I'm lazy, and Greenify to kill some stuff that I've got, e.g., Ingress, Skype, snapchat. Greenify does NOT allow killing of bloatware/pre-installed crap, so let me tape the mouths of those twits shut now. Most pre-installed apps, including all but two of the Verizon things, are disabled.
The game I notice the most trouble on is Walking War Robots, can't tell if it has to do with graphics or the processor itself. Chrome browser is quite laggy; Drive is almost unresponsive as is Docs; have lost quite a bit of data from Microsoft Word, both saved and documents being worked on. Reception is also quite a bit worse with the Marshmallow update, calls being dropped more frequently and location often having trouble pinpointing me on high-accuracy.
As I do NOT have a computer, reseting the device is not an option. The recaptcha thingy took almost 30 seconds to load; on Lollipop, they took less than five.
I fully agree with you. My experience with marshmallow has only been negative so far.
1) Incredibly Laggy. Back in the day, installing a kitkat or lollipop rom, the phone would be super fluid and would only slightly lag when installing the 50 apps. God forbid when I was installing marshmallow it seriously hung like 5 seconds and was going at maximum 10fps.
2) Heat. The phone appears to get even warmer now. How is that even possible?
3) Battery Life. My battery appears to be 10% worse. I used to only charge it at night but now I have to charge it after work around 8pm.
I do have some hope though. I'm waiting for Neo or Santod to compile a debloated rom and hoping that clears up these issues.
I was experiencing terrible lag, it seems to be settling down now. I was overheating, but that seems to have settled as well. Biggest problem is that I'm only charging at 550mA with a 2A quick charger. That's new, and totally unacceptable. Also, HTC emojis are gone. All I have are the stupid jellybean/potato looking guys and I can't decipher which emotion they are trying to relay. Chics dig emojis, and here I am feeling emoji blind.
Edit: Lag is still terrible
In the same boat.. this update is not good. This phone is so laggy and slow now it's like my OG Droid 1 from years ago. Cleared cache after installing.. waited the obligatory 45 minutes to rebuild stuff. Uninstalled the bloatware I could and it literally took minutes to do a simple uninstall. Hasn't got any better in the last day at all. If it doesn't get better in the next day or two I'll have to go back to Lollipop. This is probably the most buggy, laggy, battery killing Android update I've seen on any of my Android phones since Droid 1 days. Anyone else getting this or know of any kind of fix? I just can't imagine HTC and VZW pushed this out if problems like these are a common occurrence.
I FIGURED IT OUT GUYS?!!
So ViperROM just put out version 4.3.0.
I always thought ViperROM was some weird bloated ROM with weird features so i never gave it a go, but its basically a slimmed down HTC SENSE with a small amount of tweaks. My phone is BUTTERY smooth now. =)
Yeah, I've thought about pulling the trigger w/ Venom rom but I wanted to stay just stock rooted on my M9. If you install viper rom do you have to factory reset? I just despise doing that so much and don't want to if I don't have to. If it doesn't get better in the next day or two, I'll probably give viper a go with a full wipe.
On a side note, is this a fairly common issue with this update and the M9?? Some are saying in the other thread theirs is nice and smooth.
I was having many heat/lag issues as described above when I flashed the zip dirty or clean. I had to do a RUU with the MM update. Now it's super smooth. Still get lots of heat when the system is booting up for the first time/settling in. But after that, no issues.
how is everyone's battery with this? Mine is absolutely horrible! Just this morning sitting here.. 3 hours, down to 78% already and haven't even done anything very intensive with it. Few messages on Whatsapp, texts, a picture. This phone sucks right now. Yesterday only lasted about 10 hours with normal use. Before I would get at least a normal day out of it without worrying. What the hell is going on with MM that is sucking the life out of this phone?

Yea you will have to root. The thing is, Venom is literally a STOCK rooted M9 that has all bloat cut away and 1 small app for additional features (like changing status bar and power button for flashlight.). It is well worth it.

Guys, I finally did do the factory reset despite how much I hate having to do that. From both inside android, and from within TWRP just to be sure. It made the world of difference. I know having to re-install and set up all your apps is a huge pain the ass, but it seriously made a huge difference. Mine lasted 1 day, 13 hours with my typical usage and was still at like 9-10% I think when I re-charged it. Everything is back to working really smooth, no lag, and no heating issues. Something left over from before doesn't play nice at all with the new ROM. Hope this might help if you guys decide to stay on stock.

Mmmm, but my original post was about the M9. Not the M8. They're similar, but the M8 has a superior processor. Imo it'd be amaz to have my custom (and unfortunately shattered) M8's processors and RAM in my M9. Fix all these issues. But, alas.....

In scale, that prolly equates to about 70% of my normal day, minus gaming. Right now I'm getting through about 30% of my day, minus gaming, before needing a charge. Even with QC, charging takes about 40% longer than it did on Lollipop.
Still neither factory reset nor rooting is an option, as I have nothing to back my stuff up on. No, the local library isn't kind enough to me for that lol.

Performance issues and low Geekbench 3 score

Hey,
I have a problem with my Nexus 5X. Overall the daily usage is pretty much the same as last week, but when I will start a bigger App or a Game the phone becomes slow. I closed all apps and restarted the phone. Then I started the Geekbench 3 and the score is so low! I don't know why. I attached a screenshot. Can anyone help me?
What firmware are you using?
Dont look at benchmark's score, it doesn't reflect real performance of phone, e.g my sgs3 gets 40k in antutu but nexus Just 45-50k
Lower performance in bigger apps is caused cus when CPU reaches 55*C it turns off cores to reduce heat, you can change it with custom kernel.
I have the newest security Patch. And the Geekbench is just to demonstate how slow the device is. The Performance issue Starts when I open a game or a big app. The phone is cool and it heats up minutes after playing the game.
But is it slow in daily use? Or Just in big apps?
Look on ur average RAM use, maybe some apps make ur phone slower like fb messenger (it can take even 500mb up)

as already said, phone benchmarks mean next to nothing these days. closing apps also rarely helps speeding up a device. removing apps from the recent-screen doesn't close/stop an app btw, they redid that quite a while ago afaik.
and as a last note: restarting the phone is a very resource intensive and long process and can easily take until long after you are already able to use the phone again (mediascanner, background/system services and apps starting...)
I don't have the Facebook Messenger. Ram usage is around 1.3 GB. And it's everytime. Not only when it's restarted. I don't have Cleaner Apps or security Apps. The Speed changed ca. 2 days ago. Last Tuesday everything was fine. Benchmarks were fine, Apps were fast and everything was smooth. But then I don't know.
So that's very weird. What did you install whole last two days?
Only the game Smash Hit. I have wiped data and Cache. It didn't helped so I Uninstalled the App. Still the same.
Hm, So I'd recommend reinstalling ur rom, what would you say about it?
I can do that, but its really annoying when I must Reset my phone until a week.
So it has just a week?

Yes. The yellow Screen. But its fixed with the Developer Option "cooler colors". Buildet was this phone here in October 2015.
So, you can try to make a complain or Just reinstall rom /change kernel. No other way
I don't want to loose my warranty .
Edit:
I have wiped my complete Cache again and the score is a little bit better. Also the game. It's faster but not as fast as before.
If I'm not wrong you can take back ur warranty by flashing stock and locking back bootloader
I don't want to change anything. Are there no other possibilitys?
Solution
I had the same "problem".
Try to lock your phone and leave it to rest for few minutes. Then unlock the phone and run geekbenchmark 3.
You should get normal results now (~1230 for single & ~3500 for multi-core).
I hope this helps.
I'm facing exact same problem, bought my nexus 5x almost 1 month ago I did the geekbench but the scores were very low specially single-core, so I head up to couple of forums they suggest to reinstall the geekbench app or install the 64-bit version of it. I didn't get the 64-bit version of the app nor there is any stock setting on the phone to run apps completely on 64 bit. ( Note: Im no pure stock, never rooted, locked bootloader )

P3XL Suffering from lots of random apps closing/freezing,etc. Any ROM that will help?

I have a P3XL that's roughly 1 year old. It's seriously slow and laggy and stutters like none other. If i'm in Chrome and browsing reddit, it can crash from having a long page of images open. Using simultaneous apps like Spotify and Instagram kills the phone. I was using flashlight and making a call at the same time and it crashed.
I originally used stock, that was the same. Switched to Havoc OS and it's pretty much the same. I can only guess this is from poor RAM management. Battery life is crap now too. Doesn't last me till 6:00PM on a low usage day.
Any ROM suggestions? Or is there something here i'm missing? 4GB should be enough... the P2XL was absolutely fine but this is atrocious. I frequently want to toss this device across the room.
You may have a bad battery which is causing voltage/amperage problems and glitching. If you've already done a fresh clean install of the factory OS and still have issues that'd be my next guess.
Did you regularly run it below 20% or until dead?
Yeah I gotta say that sounds a battery issue or something else going on. I've been running stock Android 9 rooted with Kira kernel for about half a year now and although there is still a lot of reloading (especially when using chrome or internet browsers with lot of tabs open) it's still snappy and reloads quick. I've never had anything crash.
Unfortunately I have no clue how to test a battery for proper amperage. I know 2 ways to get an estimate on capacity with accubattery and extracting it from a bug report but I don't know if that will help with identify it or not.
It sounds almost identical to the same issue I had with my LG V20 which was a bad battery that would randomly shut down with around 15-25% capacity left when it got that low and when I changed the battery it fixed it

I guess it could be a bad battery causing voltage issues. I have done a fresh clean install of factory OS, and still have issues. I would say i'm average when it comes to running it below 20%. I don't do that often, but sometimes it does. I rarely let it die completely.
Best scenario would be to go through Google Support?

Yeah, mine is crashing hard. Hard enough that it's one of the poorest performance phones i've ever had. And that's saying a lot lol.
I'll try to use accubattery today to see what I get. It doesn't shut down at 15% thankfully.

My V20 wouldn't always die at those ranges but it happened pretty frequently. Do you notice a difference with it plugged in?
I would definitely start from scratch if you really want to troubleshoot this. Backup everything then flash a stock system image from Google with the wipe all command and start from there and see. If it still does it then it is most likely a hardware issue.
Sounds more like a cache problem to me.....dodgy nand chip. Needs to be replaced no matter whats causing it. If you cant get rid of it after trying everything including swapping the active boot slot from a to be or vise versa
